Page 26 of Beyond Reckless (Lost Kings MC 8)
Now I have his full attention. He slowly raises an eyebrow. âHowâd that happen?â
âItâs complicated.â
He wipes his hands on the rag hanging from his back pocket and stands. âThis is the second time youâve used that word lately. If itâs the lawyer thing, I donât think anyone will care. Hopeââ
âItâs not the lawyer thing.â Shit, every single way I run over it in my head it sounds bad, so I spill it fast. âSheâs Merlinâs niece.â
His jaw drops. And here I thought nothing could shock him anymore.
In my arms, Alexa squeals and kicks, reaching for him, babbling, âDa da da.â
He takes her without a word but continues staring at me.
âMerlin as in the Wolf Knightâs president, Merlin?â he finally asks, each word dripping with disbelief.
âYup.â
âAre you out of your fucking mind?â
âA little.â
âWhat theâ¦how the fuck?â
âYup.â
âThatâs who you went home with the night of the party?â
âYes, but we knewâ¦weâ¦weâd hooked up before.â
âWhen?â
I understand his confusion. Thereâs not a whole lot we donât share with each other.
âAfter we settled the case with my grandmother.â
âAnd you never mentioned it?â His gaze strays to Alexa and the corner of his mouth lifts. âSo thatâs why you came with us to the appointment?â
âKinda. I didnât know about her connection to their club until the night of the party, though.â
âYou got our colors inked all over you. She didnât notice?â
âNot until Gramsâ funeral. Thatâs why she freaked out and left early.â
âJesus Christ.â
âI know it sounds bad, but sheâs not close to him. She has very little to do with the club.â
âYet she happened to be there for a club party?â
His questions are mild compared to the grilling Iâll get from the rest of the club, especially Wrath. Still, I donât like anyone questioning Charlotteâs motives. Not even my closest friend.
âHer brother confirmed it for me. She doesnâtââ
âHer brother? Youâre already hanging out with her family?â I swear he almost sounds hurt.
âIâve run into him a couple times.â
âHe a patch holder?â
âNo. He doesnât seem to want anything to do with the club either. Heâs real loyal to Charlotte though.â I smirk, remembering Carter holding the gun to my head. âProtective of her to the point of stupidity.â
âNo wonder you get along,â he mutters. He runs one hand through his hair, causing Alexa to mimic the movement. He huffs out a laugh and kisses her cheek before focusing on me. âYou gotta come cleanââ
âNot yet. I need to see where this goes first.â
That makes him stop. I need him to understand that Iâm not fucking around here.
âYouâre really serious about her?â he asks.
âI could be. Iâm not sure yet.â
He rolls his eyes. âJust what women want, a nice lukewarm commitment.â
âCan you keep this to yourself or not?â
His expression darkens. Maybe I hurt his feelings. âYou know I will. Iâll do whatever you need me to do. Iâll even have your back when Wrath finds out and kicks your ass.â
I let out a snort because thatâs most likely how this will go down. âThank you.â
âCan I at least tell Heidi? She wonât say anything. Sheâs been yammering about setting the two of you up since we were at Charlotteâs office.â
âReally? Why?â
Murphy rolls his eyes. âShe wants you to be happy.â
âI guess. Donât mention the Merlin part. I donât want her to worry. Itâs not that big a deal.â
âYouâre fooling yourself if you think it wonât be a big deal, brother. You know the issues weâve been having with their club since Ulfric stepped down. Shit, even before then.â
âIââ
He cuts me off before I finish my thought. âEven if we end up being okay with itâand good luck convincing Wrath and Z itâs no big dealâMerlinâs the kind of asshole who will make an issue of it.â
Shit. He already has. The serenity I find with her is some sort of high I want to keep chasing. Making me forget all the reasons it canât last.
Murphy cocks his head. âA lawyer, huh? Thought you didnât like mouthy broads.â He says it with a smirk, using words I might have said in the past to mock me.
âIt should be difficult, but itâs not. Sheâs easy to be with. I donât have to explain things to her, she just seems to get me.â
âGood.â His throat works and he seems to struggle for what he wants to say. âYou deserve that.â
âYou getting emotional on me, Blake?â
He snorts. âYeah. Maybe.â
âSo, youâll sit on this?â
âYou donât have to keep asking.â One corner of his mouth lifts. âSecrets are a bad idea, though.â
âWeâre all holding secrets of some kind.â
âSeees,â Alexa lisps.
âNo, no, baby.â I press my finger to my lips. âThis is just between the three of us.â
She giggles and ducks her head against Murphyâs chest. âYouâre gonna be that uncle, arenât you?â he says through his laughter, rubbing his hand over Alexaâs back. âSpoiling my daughter and teaching her to lie.â
âLike you ever thought otherwise.â
Thursday night, Iâm locking up my office when the low growl of a truck engine draws my attention away from the door.
âHey, pretty girl. Want to go for a ride?â
My lips curve into a wide grin. âSure.â
I jiggle the key, but itâs stuck. âDamn.â
A few seconds later, Marcelâs warmth is at my back. âProblem, Sunshine?â
âItâs stuck,â I whine miserably. This has been the week from hell.
He reaches past me and jerks the key loose, checks that the door is locked and hands my keys over. âYour chair arrive?â
âYes. And Iâd love to break it in with you, but if I donât get away from my office right now, I might scream.â
He chuckles and throws his hands in the air as if he hadnât even considered such a thing.
âYou look pretty,â he says, giving me a once-over.
I exhale an annoyed snort. âYeah, well, I was told my outfit was inappropriate for court this morning.â
He runs his gaze over my brown and white flippy skirt and short-sleeved, linen blazer. âWhy?â
âI donât know. Itâs so hot. I couldnât stand wearing a regular suit. I forgot what a grump that judge is.â
âMissed you this week.â
The tone of his voice makes me glance up. My heart thumps at his sincere expression. âMissed you too,â I whisper.
His arms wrap around me and he lifts me slightly off the ground, sealing his mouth over mine before I can protest. After a few secondsâor minutes, Iâm not sureâhe sets me down. âCome on. Letâs grab dinner. Anywhere you want to go.â
Iâm tired, so we end up at the burrito joint across the street from my apartment. âThis isnât quite what I had in mind,â Marcel mumbles as he sets our trays down.
âIâm a simple girl.â
Our gazes collide and he shakes his head. âYouâre anything but.â
âTell me about your week.â
His shoulders lift. âNothing exciting. You?â
I bite into my burrito and consider whether I should tell him about the party my uncle expects me to attend. Earlier in the week, I made up my mind. If Marcel was unable or unwilling to go, I wasnât going. It would feel too much like betraying my boyfriend.
âThe Wolf Knights are having a thing at Black Lake Park. He said I could bring you.â
He stares at me for a few seconds before answering. âWhen?â/> âSunday afternoon.â
âMaybe.â
Iâm surprised he didnât flat-out refuse.
âYou still want to come up to the clubhouse?â
âWith you? Absolutely.â
âI told Murphy about us,â he says quietly.
âYou did?â Technically his friend is my client, so itâs weird. But the giddy girl in me is bouncing up and down. âWhat did he say?â
âHe was happy for me.â He slides his gaze away and I have to wonder what heâs not telling me.
CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
Forcing Murphy to keep my secret when heâs living under Rockâs roof bothers me. More than that, I canât stand hiding Charlotte from my brothers any longer.
Friday afternoon when we sit down for church, I decide to come clean.
Who we fuck isnât the clubâs business. Not really. If it gets serious, yeah, we should bring her around. Introduce her to the club, unless we plan to keep her completely citizen.
However, if we know the club might have a legitimate issue with someone weâre getting close with, thatâs something that needs to be brought up at the end of church.
Todayâs meeting is short.
As Rock takes one last glance around the table, I raise my hand. Next to me, Murphy snickers. Earlier, I gave him a headâs up. He bet me five bucks I wouldnât have the balls.
Under the table, I kick him and hold my hand out.
âIâm seeing someone and I want to bring her up to the clubhouse.â
Itâs not Rock Iâm staring at for this, itâs Wrath. Security is his job.
Wrath tilts his head. âAnd? She got a name?â
âCharlotte Clark.â
Rock either chokes or laughs. Not sure which. I slide my gaze his way. Wrath also focuses his attention on our president. âWhat?â he asks.
âNothing. Hope knows her,â Rock says, barely keeping the smile off his face.
At once, Wrath gets it.
âAre you fucking serious?â He glances at Rock, then back to me with a smirk. âMust you copy everything he does, mini-Rock?â
Wrathâs called me Rockâs mini-me for years. Unfortunately for him, Iâve always taken it as a compliment.
âItâs not that,â I protest.
No one else, except Murphy, understands why Wrathâs comment is supposed to be funny.
âWell, at least you didnât meet her while you were in an orange jumpsuit,â Rock jokes.
The next part wonât be as amusing.
âThatâs not why Iâm bringing it to the table, Prez.â
Wrath and Rock both wait for me to continue. Amused expressions in place.
âSheâs Merlinâs niece.â
All humor drains from Wrathâs face. Rock sits up, setting his elbows on the table.
âMerlin. As in the Wolf Knightâs new President, Merlin?â Wrath asks with deadly calm.
âThatâd be the one.â
Rapid-fire questions shoot out of my brothersâ mouths.
âYou out of your fucking mind, bro?â Z snaps.
âGive him a chance to explain,â Sparky says. I glance down the table and lift my chin at him.
âHow the fuck did you hook up with her?â Dex asks.
This partâs easy to admit, because my brothers donât give a fuck if Charlotte acted unethically. Hell, it might actually help. âShe was the attorney who was appointed to represent Heidi when I fought our grandmother for custody. After we settled the case, we, uh, got together once.â
A lot of people assume Wrathâs big and dumb, but heâs a keen observer. Has to be to have survived as our enforcer for this long. He lifts his chin at Murphy. âSheâs the same one helping you with Alexaâs adoption?â
âYup.â
âYou knew about this?â Wrath asks in a grave tone.
Couple years ago, Wrathâs full attention on him wouldâve had Murphy squirming in his seat. Now, he braces his elbows on the table and leans forward. âHe wasnât trying to hide it from the club. Heâs been waiting for the right time.â
Thatâs Murphy. Always has my back no matter what.
Wrath glances at Rock and lifts a shoulder. âHeidi contacted her. I donât see how Wolf Knights coulda arranged that. Or why theyâd bother.â
âWhat if they try using it to their advantage once they find out?â Ravage says from his end of the table.
âFuck you,â I fire back. âSheâs not a rat. She barely has anything to do with the club.â
âWhy?â Wrath asks.
âI donât know. We donât waste time talking about her uncle or his club.â Not a complete lie.
âYou might want to find out.â The might in that sentence isnât a suggestion.
My fists open and close on the table. âFrom what Iâve seen and heard, Merlin acts like a dick to her and treats her brother like shit. She keeps her distance.â
Rock seems to be the one to finally take some pity on my situation. âAll right. What are you asking of the club today?â
âI want to bring her up here with me. Weâre always staying at her apartment.â
âShe put you up to this?â Stash asks.
I slap my hands on the table and lean over so I can see him better. âFuck off.â
âSimmer down. Both of you,â Rock says.
âStop being a dick, Stash,â Murphy grumbles.
âWhere does she live?â Z asks.
âDowntown Empire. Lark Street.â
Z lifts an eyebrow. âInteresting she lives in Empire.â
âI thought so too.â
âI assume she has some class and wonât start shit with any of the girls?â
That almost makes me laugh. âNo, I donât see her doing that, Z.â
Wrath nods at Murphy. âWhat do you think of her?â
âWhy does it matter what I think? I only met her the one time.â
Silence fills the air as Wrath waits for Murphyâs answer.
Murphy sighs and sits up. âSheâs nice. Treated both of us with respect. Didnât look down on Heidi or anything. She was honest with us about the process. Heidi has a real high opinion of her.â He shrugs. âI donât know what else you want me to say.â
Wrath sits back and crosses his arms over his chest, staring me down. âYouâre serious about her.â
Heâs not asking.
âOur demons play nice together.â I know heâll appreciate that answer.
Wrath snorts, but the corner of his mouth turns up slightly. âFine. Bring her up. Merlin and their crew have been here before, so itâs not like the locationâs a big secret.â He jabs a big finger in my direction. âBut youâre responsible for her when sheâs here. Donât let her go wandering around.â His gaze shifts down the table. âAnd for fuckâs sake, keep her away from the basement.â
âWeâre not really in the habit of letting anyone outside the club down there, brother,â Sparky mumbles. That might be the first time Iâve heard Sparky give Wrath lip. Great, just what I wanted. To be responsible for driving a wedge between my brothers.
Thankfully Wrathâs not fazed and Sparky settles back down.
âAll right.â Rock glances around the table. âAnything else?â
No one speaks up.
âGo on,â Rock says, dismissing everyone.
He points to Z and Wrath. âYou two. Meet me next door.â
On his way out, Stash claps me on the shoulder. âSorry, brother. I wasnât trying to be a dick.â
âItâs cool.â
Sparkyâs a lilâ more enthusiastic. He grabs my shoulders and wraps his arms around my neck from behind, choking the shit out of me. âHappy for you, bro. Your energyâs been so much brighter lately. Now I know why.â
A strangled âThanksâ works out of my throat. As our resident dirty-hippie, I expect Sparky to say stuff like that. He releases me and follows everyone else out of the room.
When everyone except Murphy and I have left, Rock turns and dips his chin. âStay put.â
âYou need me too?â Murphy asks.
Rock gives him a cool look. âNo. Iâll talk to you later.â
Shit, I hate that I made things awkward for Murphy.
He pats my shoulder on the way out. When the door closes behind him, Rock and I are alone.
Under the weight of Rockâs stare, I square my shoulders and face him head on. âTalk to me,â he says.
âWhat do you want me to say?â
âWell,â he says, drawing out the word. âKnown you a long time. Youâre a bit hot-headed sometimes. Open your mouth without thinking often. But Iâve never known you to be reckless.â
Finished assessing my personality, he sits back. âTell me why you trust her so much. Why you didnât tell the club about this sooner. Especially when you know weâre having issues with Merlin right now.â
Before I open my mouth, he holds up his hand. âAnd at no point should her hot âlil pussy factor into this discussion.â
My jaw tightens as a blast of anger blows through me. Rock doesnât miss my reaction either. He chuckles. âGood to know where youâre at.â
I shouldâve known better. Rock rarely talks about women that way. By taking the bait, Iâve already flunked his first test. Or passed it, depending on his objective.
Rockâs more than my club president. I owe him a lot. Everything really. But definitely my honesty.
âIf it went nowhere, I figured I wouldâve wasted everyoneâs time for no good reason.â
âI think Iâve met her once or twice. Seemed like a nice girl. Tell me why you think her relation to Merlin wonât be an issue.â
âShit. I donât know. Itâs a gut feeling, Rock.â
âConvince me.â
I stop and think about how to put my feelings for Charlotte into words. âFor one thing, she doesnât seem to like him all that much. The only family sheâs close to is her brother, and he canât stand Merlin.â
âHow oldâs the brother?â
âYounger than her.â
âIs he a patch holder?â
âNo interest. He doesnât ride.â
âContinue,â he says, waving his hand at me like heâs trying to pull the information off my tongue.
âI think she usually tries to stay clear of bikers.â
He raises an eyebrow. âAnd yet she found you?â
âI kind of pursued her.â
