Page 27 of Beyond Reckless (Lost Kings MC 8)
He nods in what I think is approval, so I continue. âYou remember Hope was real careful to keep any mention of the club out of the custody case.â Rock makes an affirmative sound. âCharlotte didnât know about my affiliation until my grandmotherâs funeral. She freaked out. We ended things badly. And I always felt shitty about it.â
âYouâve had a lot going on the last few years,â he says.
âYeah, well. When I went with Heidi and Murphy to her office and saw her again.â I drop my gaze, shaking my head. âI was planning to contact her.â I wave my hand over my leg. âOnce I got myself sorted out. But then I ran into her at that partyââ
âSo thatâs where youâve been spending your time lately?â
I shouldnât be surprised Rock knows I havenât been around a lot. As much as he pretends to be disinterested in what weâre up to now that he and Hope are in their own house, I donât doubt he keeps tabs on our whereabouts. Especially me. âYou got Murphy spying on me, Prez?â
The corners of his mouth turn up and for the first time today he seems genuinely amused. âNot very well, apparently.â
âI only told him a couple days ago.â
âAh, okay.â He jerks his thumb toward the door. âBe aware, Wrathâs going to be a dick to her. Heâll probably test her worse than the shit he pulled with Hope.â He drops the smile. âBut you understand why.â
âYeah. Charlotte can hold her own. She also understands the way things work.â
âWell, at least she has that going for her.â He shakes his head. âGoddamn. Swayâs daughter is single, you know. You wanted a bikerâs girl, you coulda at least kept it in the family.â
I raise an eyebrow. âTawny-lite? No, thanks. Iâll pass.â
Murphy slaps my back when I finally leave the war room. âGlad you came clean today.â
âCouldnât wait anymore.â
âItâll work out. You wouldnât go through all this if you werenât serious.â
âNo shit,â I mutter.
âYou good? I need to take off.â
âIâm fine.â I scan the room, my gaze landing on Hope.
As usual, sheâs waiting for Rock in the living room. Normally Trinity would be right next to her.
âWhereâs your sidekick?â I ask, walking over to her. The rest of the clubhouse seems empty although thereâs plenty of noise coming from the dining room and outside.
Hope wrinkles her nose. âBaking? I donât know. I didnât ask a lot of questions. You know how she gets in the kitchen.â
I snap my fingers. âWrathâs birthday is coming up.â I glance back at the open war room doors. âNo wonder he was such a cranky bastard today.â
She squints. âIsnât he always cranky?â
âI heard that, Cinderella.â
âOf course you did,â I mutter.
A few seconds later, Wrath slaps me on the back, nearly knocking me over. âDid you run and tell Mommy I was mean to you about your new girlfriend coming to visit?â
âWould you stop that?â Hope protests. âI am not old enough to be his mother.â
Wrath waves a hand at her, which she slaps away. âYou know what I mean.â
I can clearly remember these two interacting in a much different, much more hostile way in this very living room the first time Hope attended a party at the clubhouse.
Maybe thereâs a chance Charlotte will fit in here after all.
One day.
âGo on. Tell Hope all about how you had to copy Dad.â Wrath snickers. âIt would be funny if not for the other thing.â
âYouâre a dick.â
âWhatâs the other thing?â Hope asks instead of the more obvious question.
âSheâs related to the president of the Wolf Knights MC,â I explain, sitting next to her.
Her eyes widen. âReally? Well, sheâll probably know how to handle herself better when Wrath harasses her than I did.â
Wrath pats her head, messing up her hair, and she swats at him. âYou did fine, Cinderella.â
âAre you harassing my wife?â Rock asks, slapping Wrath on the back.
âNope.â
Hope shakes her head. âNo, weâre talking about Tellerâs new girlfriend.â
I find it amusing that Hopeâs always willing to defend one of us if she thinks weâre going to get in trouble with Rock.
Rock lifts his chin my way, then squeezes Wrathâs shoulder, probably harder than necessary. âI need you and Z in the office to look at something.â
âNow?â
âNow.â
After they leave, Hope turns her full attention to me.
âSo, you must really like this girl,â Hope says.
âItâs Charlotte, by the way.â I figure I should get that out first.
Her mouth curves into a sly smile.
âWhy do I get the feeling you knew? Did she say something to you?â
âNot directly.â
I have no idea what to make of that.
âItâs not that sheâs a lawyer thatâs the problem? You said sheâs related toâ¦â she trails off as she seems to search her memory. âMerlin, right? Thatâs the Wolf Knightsâ president? He was at our wedding. So weâre on good terms with their club, right?â
She seems pleased she remembered this nugget of knowledge about our world.
âYes, butââ
âKings first?â
âAlways.â
She nods. âSo you must really like her.â
âI do. Sheâs funny. Sheâs got this little shithead of a brother that sheâs loyal to and he tries so hard to be protective of her even though he goes about it totally wrong. Sheâs definitely not impressed with this.â I tap my finger over my Treasurer patch. âSomehow she has a sweet way of telling me when Iâm acting like a jerk that just makes me like her even more. She gets me. Butâ¦â
Hope waits while I gather my thoughts. I donât know how to put the rest of it into words. Donât know if I can put into words. This feeling has been nagging at me ever since I realized I was falling for Charlotte and it has nothing to do with the club. âI donât have a good track record with women. My mother abandoned me. My grandmother kicked me out. The first girl I thought I was in love with was in love with someone else.â Christ, I sound like a whiny bastard. âOr I fuck up and they get hurt.â I choke on my last words. âI donât want to hurt her.â
âAnd you donât want to fall in love and get hurt?â she asks gently.
âThatâs all Iâve ever known.â Not that Hope knows this, but for some reason, I feel like apologizing to her. âItâs why I never totally trusted you. Figured youâd get sick of this and leave. Break his heart.â
âRock?â
âYeah. Watched him go through that shit with Carla. She left him when he was inside. They took vows. Meant nothing to her.â
Hopeâs unlike any woman Iâve ever known. She doesnât get pissed when I bring up Rockâs ex-wife. She squeezes my hand and lets me continue.
âAnd Murphyâs so enamored of you. Figured youâd crush him too if you left. Watched him go through that with his mom for years.â
âI bet. Heâs told me a little.â
âSee. He trusts you. Heâs never talked about that shit with anyone. Except maybe Trinity when his mom died.â
âHe told me that too.â
I shake my head. âHe never cried or complained. Nothing like that. But Iâd see it in his face every time she tried to get clean. The hope that sheâd finally be a mother. Then the disappointment when she failed again.â
âThatâs rough.â She glances down as if sheâs not sure she should voice her thoughts. âYouâve both overcome so much.â
A sharp snort bursts out of me and I shake my head âI shouldâve listened to him when he told me how he felt about Heidi. Maybe she wouldnât have gone through all that hell with Axel. I really fucked that up.â
âTeller. Youâre not responsible for everything that happens to her.â
âYes, I am.â If only she knew how much of the bad shit thatâs happened to Heidi was my fault. âShit, Hope. I canâtâ¦I canât thank you enough for all the stuff youâve done for her.â
Pink spreads over her cheeks and she turns her head. âIâm happy to do it.â
âI get that about you now.â
She turns serious. âI hate to break it you, but Iâm not going anywhere. Rock, the club, youâre all stuck with me. Sorry-not-sorry.â
I kind of figured that the way she used âweâ to describe the relationship between the Lost Kings and Wolf Knights a few minutes ago. âIâm not sure we could survive without you now.â
âSo you were worried about Rock?â she asks. âI always assumed you didnât like me taking his time away from the club.â
âThat mightâve been Wrathâs concern. But not mine. He deserves to be happy. You make him happy.â
âOh, Teller.â She wraps her arms around my shoulders and squeezes me.
âI donât have any faith thatâs in my future,â I mumble against her hair. âIâve fucked up way too many times.â
Pushing me back, she stares me straight in the eyes. âFrom what youâve said, You seem to have a lot in common. Thatâs a start.â
âYou and Rock donât have a lot in common.â
She chuckles. âMaybe on the surface.â She places her hand over her heart. âAt our core though, I think we do.â
I turn that over in my head.
âItâs already causing all kinds of chaos,â I gesture to the war room, âand she hasnât even been here yet.â
âI can imagine.â Her soft green eyes never stray. âBut, love is worth all the chaos, Teller. I promise.â She hesitates for a second. âMaybe you donât see it, but youâre a good person.â
âIââ
She cuts off my protest. âI know you blame yourself for what happened to Mariella. But itâs not your fault.â Her eyes shine with unshed tears, but her voice is steady. âYou made her feel safe and happy for the first time in her life.â
âShe trusted me to keep her safe and I didnât.â
âSometimes, no matter how hard we try, itâs not up to us, Teller. You deserve to be happy. To be loved.â
Shit, this womanâs going to make me cry.
âIâll have to get to know her a little better before I decide if sheâs worthy of you, though,â she teases, bumping her shoulder against me to lighten up the conversation.
This is Hope. Always guiding and steering us in the right direction when we need it. Sometimes Iâve resented her for it. Like when she helped Murphy figure out how to handle my sister.
Now, I welcome it.
She somehow managed to settle Rock down. Make him happy. While heâs always been like a fatherâor older brotherâto me and a damn good president to this club, he was never happy. Not until her.
So maybe, just maybe, she knows what sheâs talking about and I should listen to her.
âYou know what?â she asks, squeezing my hand again.
âWhat?â
âI think youâve spent your whole life taking care of other people. Maybe itâs time for you to be with someone who can take care of herself. Even better, she understands the club life.â
âShe doesnât need a guy like me in her life.â
âBut it sounds like she wants you. Isnât that better?â
CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX
Saturday morning, Murphyâs at my door early.
âShit, surprised youâre actually here, bro,â he says, stepping away from the door.
I scrub my hand over my face. âWhat the fuck you want at this hour?â
âYou bringing Charlotte up tonight?â
âI think so. Yeah.â
âCool. You coming down for breakfast?â
âNow that you woke me up, I guess so.â
He waits in the hallway while I take a quick shower and get dressed. When I open the door, heâs talking to Z.
âMorning.â Z squints. âWait, who are you again? Itâs been so long.â
âShut up.â
âBringing your girl up tonight?â
âMaybe. Jesus. Why is everyone so fucking interested in who I bring up here all of a sudden?â
âYouâve never brought a girl home to meet Mom and Dad,â Z says, following me down the hall.
âI assume youâre Mom. Whoâs Dad?â
Behind me Murphy chuckles. Z smacks me.
Heidi runs up and gives me a big hug when we enter the dining room. âIâm so happy you told everyone. Itâs been killing me.â
I take her aside. âYouâre really excited about this?â
âUh, yeah. Trin has a photo shoot tonight, so we probably wonât be back until later, but Iâll make sure I stop by.â
Thank God. Hopefully Wrath will be with the girls instead of here harassing my girl.
Shaking my head, I sling my arm over her shoulder and lead her to the table.
âMorning, Alexa.â She turns and waves her arms for me to pick her up out of her high chair.
âYou bring this over?â I ask Murphy.
âNo, I bought one so she has it here,â Rock answers.
Inside, Iâm laughing. No one will dare question Rock sticking a high chair in our clubhouse. If Murphy had done it, he wouldâve had the shit razzed out of him.
Surprisingly, no one grills me about Charlotte over breakfast. Rock and Wrath discuss the trip theyâre planning to take with Hope and Trinity. Z informs them that the first stop on their trip will be Swayâs place, which makes Hope cringe. She and Trinity make eye-rolling faces at each other.
âYou two going?â I ask Murphy.
âHe was invited,â Wrath says. His gaze slides my way. âEveryone is.â
Murphy glares across the table.
âI can watch Alexa for a couple days,â I offer.
âYouâd do that?â Heidi asks.
âDonât worry about it. I have plenty to do here,â Murphy says.
âCome on.â I lift my chin at Heidi. âSheâs going back to school soon.â I tilt my head Trinityâs way. âHer boss is on vacation.â
âYour place of employment burned down,â Wrath adds.
âYou sure?â Murphy asks.
âI love watching her. Itâll be fine.â
âYou can stay at our house with her, Teller,â Hope says.
âThanks.â
âOr here,â Sparks suggests. âHalf the clubâs gonna be gone.â
âYou donât have to do the whole trip,â Wrath says.
âYeah, Iâm only doing the first week. I need to be back here,â Z says.
Murphy glances at my sister and she eagerly nods.
âAll right.â Murphy slaps my open palm. âThanks.â
Alexa lets out a high-pitched squee. âSee, sheâs thrilled to spend the week with me.â
After breakfast, Hope grabs my arm, pulling me away from everyone else. âAre you bringing Charlotte up tonight?â
One corner of my mouth lifts. Iâd been waiting for her to ask. âYeah.â
âDo you want me here for support? Or do you think that will make it weird for her?â
I swallow hard before answering. âIt might make her feel better. She knows you.â
She squeezes my arm. âThen weâll be here.â
On my way to Charlotteâs, Iâm feeling more optimistic. I show up on her doorstep with a smile.
She looks completely frazzled as she lets me in. I wrap my arms around her stiff body and slowly she relaxes into mine.
âWhatâs wrong?â I ask, kissing the top of her head.
A few seconds go by before she answers. âNothing. Iâm happy to see you.â
âYou donât look happy.â
She tips her head back and pastes on a fake smile. âKiss me. Maybe that will help.â
âCanât say no to that.â
I lean over and press my lips to hers, soft at first. A slow greeting. My tongue flicks out for a taste and she opens her mout
h. âYou taste so good,â rumbles out of my mouth before I kiss her deeper.
She pulls back.
âWhatâs wrong?â
A soft sigh and she steps away, dropping down to the couch. âThe electric was shut off over at my motherâs.â
Not sure how to respond, I wait for her to continue.
âMy brotherâs stopping by any minute.â She nods to her desk by the door and stands. âI need to go change. Thereâs a check in my top desk drawer, can you hand it to him ifââ
âYeah, sure.â She looks so miserable, I want to do more. âWe donât have to go up to the clubhouse tonight.â
âNo. Iâve been looking forward to it.â She scurries down the hall.
Electric shut off.
I sure as shit lived through that happening enough times when we lived with my mother and Heidi was just a baby.
Unsure because it feels too much like snooping, I slide the drawer open so I can have the check ready for Carter. Her deskâs cluttered with pens, pencils, tape, pennies, stamps, quarters, and her checkbook. I slip that out and flip through it, not finding anything made out to Carter.
Iâm about to call out and ask where it is when another name catches my attention.
Her checkbook has those carbon copy things so you can see all the old checks written for those who donât bother balancing their account. I flip through, finding regular payments made out to her uncle.
Hefty payments.
What the fuck?
His niece is living in this shithole of an apartment, driving a bucket of rust to work, and heâs been collecting thousands of dollars a year from her for the last few years. I already know she helps Carter support their mother. Who the fuck supports her?
âDid you find it?â Charlotte asks.
âNo.â
She glances at the checkbook in my hand. âSorry, itâs in that envelope.â
âCharlotte, why are you paying your uncle twelve hundred dollars a month?â
âWhat?â She snatches the checkbook out of my hands. âWhy are you snooping?â
âI wasnât. You asked me to go in there and that seemed like a reasonable place to look for a check.â
âItâs nothing. I donât want to talk about it.â
âWhat do you mean, itâs nothing? That asshole doesnât need your money.â From what I know, Merlinâs sitting pretty plush right now. âYouâre living in this shitty apartmentââ
