Page 25 of Beyond Reckless (Lost Kings MC 8)
âThanks,â he mumbles.
âYeah, we shoulda sent you to cooking school instead of art college,â Chuck adds.
Technically, Chuck didnât send my brother anywhere. I did. I made sure his financial aid forms were filled out and that he had what he needed to finish his two-year fine arts degree. I wanted him to continue, but Carter wasnât willing to move away from our mother.
âHowâs painting going, Carter?â Chuck asks.
âFine. I have a few jobs lined up.â He turns to me. âMercyâs father got me that mural at City Hall.â
âThatâs amazing!â I throw my arms around him, and he shoves me away, embarrassed. âWhy didnât you tell me sooner?â
He lifts his shoulders. âI wonât start on it for a few weeks.â
âYou still friends with that girl? Mercy?â Chuck asks.
âHad breakfast with her this morning.â
He nods slowly. âYou can bring her to the party if you donât want to bring your boyfriend.â
âI donât think so.â
The rest of the dinner is just as awkward.
Chuck and my mother are busy doing who knows what on the couch when I give my brother a hug and slip out the back door.
âWhere the fuck have you been lately?â Z bitches at me the next morning.
I tap out a quick text then slip my phone in my pocket. Havenât heard from Charlotte since yesterday morning and Iâm worried family dinner didnât go well.
Z doesnât tolerate being ignored. âLittle bro, you listening?â
âIâm listening. The whole fuckinâ forest can hear your big mouth.â
âOoo, look who woke up with his balls strapped on this morning,â Z taunts while grabbing his junk.
âEveryone leave their equipment in their pants, please,â Rock says, using his patient-not-ready-to-crack-skulls-yet voice.
Wrath snickers. âFocus, fuckers, todayâs the only day I can do this.â
Turned out there was an issue with the foundation on Murphyâs house and some areas needed to be re-excavated before the concrete could be poured. Rather than wait and risk pushing off the concrete work, we decided to spend today getting the job done ourselves. Jasper, the general contractor, is a friend of Zâs and hired the guy who fucked up.
âIâll get your money back,â Jasper promises, giving each of us a wary look.
âI just want it done right,â Murphy growls.
Z jumps up and down in place a few times, rubbing his hands together. âWe got this, bro. Donât worry. Never shoulda let someone else do it. Whatever we can do ourselves, we should.â
Murphy nods, but heâs more likely to gnaw off his own arm than ask for help.
Between the six of us, the work goes quickly. Iâm still exhausted by the end of the day. Working out in the gym and manual labor in the summer heat are two very different things.
âChrist, I might call Violet and tell her Iâm not coming in for PT tomorrow,â I mutter at the end of the day.
Z lifts his chin. âYou okay?â
âIâll be fine.â
âWeâre in good shape now,â Jasper assures us. He gives Murphy and Z a few other details.
âMakes you want to skip all this and put up a modular, doesnât?â Wrath says, tapping my shoulder.
âI always liked the idea of restoring an old place better.â
âYeah, you gonna find some old fixer-upper and drag it up here?â
Honestly, Iâve never thought about it. Been basically living at the clubhouse for years. Love it up here. Have all the land we need and no one bothers us.
âIâm fine where I am,â I assure him. âHey, you gonna be able to help me place some new tree stands before deer season?â
âAnytime.â
I turn him and point toward one of the undisturbed parts of the clubâs property. âThinking of putting in a food plot that way and moving the stands there.â
âOkay. Just let me know when.â He makes a choking motion with his hands. âIâm going to kill one Tarzan style this year.â
âHow? Swinging from a vine in your underwear?â
He bellows with laughter. âNo, asshole. With my bare hands.â
âYouâre a beast.â
I climb into the UTV to drive back to the clubhouse and before I pull away, Z jumps into the seat next to me.
âChrist, what do you want now?â
The vehicle bounces and I turn to find Murphy in the bed behind me. âI think weâre exceeding the weight limit now.â
âFuck you. Just drive.â
âGo,â Z says, gesturing to the trail in front of us. âI think Rock and Wrath want to have a word with Jasper,â he mutters only loud enough for me to hear.
As soon as I put the vehicle in drive, Z starts harassing me. âSo, where ya been lately, fucker?â
âWhy you so worried about me?â
He reaches over and runs his knuckles over my head and I slap his hand away.
âKnock it off.â
Z screws his face into an imitation of a pout. âItâs so quiet next door.â
âPlease. Iâve been gone a couple nights here and there.â
âSeeing someone?â
When I donât answer, Z turns around and asks Murphy the same question.
âI donât know,â Murphy answers, which makes me feel worse than it should.
âBullshit. You two know every move the other makes.â
âNot true,â Murphy says.
Z chuckles, a dirty laugh. âYeah, I guess T doesnât want to know what moves youâre making on Heidi.â
âShut up,â I snarl.
Murphy slaps my shoulder. âDrop me at Rockâs.â
âYouâre not even coming back to the clubhouse with us for a bit?â Z asks.
âNot tonight.â He slaps both our hands before running up the front steps.
âYouâre not going in to see Heidi?â
âHonestly, I need a shower and a fucking nap. I hurt everywhere.â
âShoulda said something.â
âDidnât feel it until we stopped.â
After parking the UTV outside the garage, I give Z a fist bump, then drag my ass upstairs.
Before leaving the rehab facility, Iâd weaned myself off the pain medication Iâd been taking. Still have a few around and I pop one before heading into the shower.
I canât even shower without thinking about Charlotte.
Distracted, I finish quickly and dry off. Checking my phone shows she answered my text.
At the office all day.
At least I know sheâs okay.
CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
Pure chaos rules Rock and Hopeâs house when I walk in a few mornings later.
Most of the commotion is centered around my niece, whoâs screaming at the top of her lungs. Hopeâs holding her and trying to console her, but Alexa keeps reaching for Murphy, whoâs busy cooking.
A rather odd scene Iâm interrupting.
Rock spots me and waves at me to come in before he steps outside to continue his phone call.
Hope flashes a weak smile. âMorning, Teller.â
âMorning. Whereâs Heidi?â
âIn the shower,â Murphy answers without looking at me.
I take Alexa and she screams even louder for a few seconds. When she focuses on me, her screams abruptly stop. âWhatâs wrong, baby?â
She bursts into tears again.
âShe is not a happy baby today,â Hope explains, rubbing the back of her hand over Alexaâs cheek.
Guilt ripples over me. I shouldnât allow my sister to impose on my president and his wife. âSorry, Hope.â I pull out a chair at the large kitchen table and drop into it. When I glance up, Hopeâs pretty eyes are narrowed in my direction.
âItâs not a problem, Teller,â she says in a way that sounds an awful lot like mind your own business. Except, Heidi is my business or she was.
âWhatâre you cooking, Mr. Mom?â I tease Murphy.
&
nbsp; He throws a middle finger up without turning around.
Hope tsks at me as she sets coffee, mugs, sugar and creamer on the table. She hates when I pick on Murphy. âWe like having them here. Keeps things lively.â
âIâll bet,â I mutter.
Ignoring my comment, she hands me a frozen teething ring. âHere, see if sheâll gnaw on this.â
Heidi races into the kitchen, dressed in jeans, T-shirt, and a towel on her head, throws a quick hello at me, and races back out. A few seconds later the whir of a blow dryer starts up.
âWhatâs she up to?â
Hope glances at the clock before answering. âTrinityâs picking her up. Heidiâs helping her with a photo shoot.â
âWhy isnât she ready?â
Murphy glares at me again as he sets food out on the table. âShe was up all night with Alexa.â He claps his hand over my shoulder, squeezing with enough pressure to get my attention. In a lower voice, he says, âIf you harass her when she gets out here, Iâm going to kick your ass.â
I donât have enough fingers to count how many times Murphy has threatened to kick my ass lately. It seems to be our new favorite routine.
Looking a little less frazzled, my sister joins us at the table a few minutes later. She hugs me from behind, settling her chin on my shoulder. The damp ends of her hair brush against my arm and the scent of strawberries tickle my nose. She places a quick kiss on my cheek. âMorning. Whatâre you doing here so early?â
What am I doing? I wanted to see my niece. See my sister. See my best friend whoâs never at the clubhouse anymore.
âJust wanted to see my favorite girls.â
She kisses my cheek again and takes Alexa from me, dropping into the chair on my left.
âThank you so much, Hope,â Heidi says as she plays peek-a-boo with Alexa.
âNo problem, honey.â While Hope says it to Heidi, sheâs looking at me.
Great, somehow I managed to piss off Hope and itâs not even nine a.m. Rock will love that.
As if he knew, Rock steps back inside. He lifts his chin at me. âMorning.â
âEverything okay?â Murphy asks.
Rock plants a kiss on Hopeâs cheek before answering. âBricks had an issue with one of the guys weâre doing some custom work for.â
âYou need help?â
âNah, weâve got it.â He nods to the hallway. âI did get those parts you asked me for, though.â
âCool. Thanks.â
âDo you have to go down to the shop?â Hope asks Rock.
The two of them share a look. âNot until later,â he answers in a low voice, clearly not meant for the rest of us. Murphy coughs and rolls his eyes. My sisterâs oblivious busy playing with Alexa.
After a round of eye-fondling his wife, Rock digs into breakfast. âWhatâs up with you?â he asks me.
âNot much, Prez.â
He accepts that answer and swings his gaze to Heidi.
âReady for your big day?â he asks her in such a dad way, it hits me right in the chest. This is the kind of domestic scene she should have had as a kid.
I glance at Alexa. At least sheâll alwaysâ
âTeller?â Murphyâs voice breaks into my thoughts.
I turn and find him watching me and wonder if this is the first time he tried to get my attention. âWhatâre your plans today?â
Like an idiot, I lift my shoulders. I donât have anything planned other than annoying my sister this morning.
âA few small things.â
âCome help me in the garage after breakfast?â he asks with a look on his face that says he knows Iâm full of shit.
âSure.â
Someone knocks on the front door and Rock yells for them to come in. Trinity enters, eager smile in place. âReady, Heidi?â
Rock waves his hand over the table. âYou can sit down and have breakfast first, right?â
Trinity grabs a chair next to Hope and drops into it. âI already ate, but I will have some coffee as long as Hope didnât make it.â
Hope playfully punches Trinityâs side. âRock made it.â
âWhereâs your man?â Murphy asks.
âHeâs working at Sullyâs today.â
âEverything going okay there?â Rock asks.
Trinityâs lashes flutter as if she doesnât want to give us the full story. âYou know how he is. Not thrilled to be working out of someone elseâs place.â
âItâll be okay,â Hope says, âonce Furious is back up and running.â
Trinity and Murphy both sort of nod at Hopeâs optimism. We all know the rebuild of Furious Fitness will take a while to get sorted.
Heidi finishes her breakfast and stands. I offer to take Alexa, but Trinity holds out her hands. âOh, let me give Alexa kisses.â
A few minutes later, thereâs a flurry of activity while the girls pack up and head for the door. Heidi seems to get a little teary when itâs time to leave. Especially when Alexa screams bloody murder the minute my sister steps outside.
âGo ahead, Heidi. Sheâll be fine,â I assure her.
âShhh. Shhh, I got you, baby,â I keep talking in low tones until Alexa finally settles down.
âIâll take her,â Murphy says, coming at her with a damp washcloth to clean her tear-streaked cheeks. Something my little niece doesnât appreciate.
âYou headed to the garage now?â Rock asks.
Murphy nods. âIâll take Alexa.â
âGet her started in the garage early. Good,â Hope teases.
âYou know it.â
Rock glances at me. âTake her outside if heâs gonna start anything up.â
âYeah, of course, I will.â
Since I came over and ate their food, I should probably help Hope clean up or something, but Murphyâs eager to leave. Rockâs busy groping his wife while she loads the dishwasher anyway. Everyone seems to have a routine here I know nothing about. It leaves me feeling like an intruder.
âDoesnât she work anymore?â I ask Murphy once weâre on the path to the garage.
âWho? Hope? Yeah, I think so.â He glances back at the house and sniggers. âTheyâll probably go at each other for a few hours, then heâll ride down to the shop and sheâll go to the office.â
âItâs disturbing that you know that.â
âYou asked.â
âDa-da,â Alexa babbles as we walk through the woods.
Murphy runs his hand over her back.
âArenât you supposed to encourage her talking?â I tease.
He shrugs but doesnât answer.
âWhatâs wrong?â I must be one insensitive motherfucker because it takes a few seconds to puzzle it out. âYou feel guilty having her call you Dad?â I ask gently.
âMaybe,â he answers without looking at me.
Yeah, heâs scary as fuck on the outside, but inside, heâs always been sensitive. Probably why we get along so well. He makes up for what I lack.
âFigured when sheâs a little older Iâll explain her dadâs in heaven orââ
âWhy the fuck would you say that to her? Youâre the only father sheâs ever gonna know.â
My best friend turns and glares at me. âShe has a right to know about her father. Iâm not going to lie to her.â
âWhy not?â
âThe truth always comes out eventually. Isnât it better for her to know growing up so itâs no big deal, rather than finding out later and hating us for lying to her all her life?â
Christ, when did he get so fucking smart?
If it were me, I wouldâve scrubbed Axel out of my life for good. The constant reminder of my sisterâs first husband has to eat at him. I respect the hell out of Murphy for giving this so much thought.
âI guess,â I grumble not quite willing to concede.
He hesitates. âBut what if we make too big a deal out of it and she feels like she doesnât fit in or something?â He glances down at Alexa who reaches up and tugs on his beard. âShit.â/> I shouldnât laugh because he so clearly wants to do the right thing for my niece. âI think being a parent means youâre fucked no matter what you do.â
âChrist, youâre not kidding.â
Turns out our conversationâs appropriate because itâs Axelâs old bike we came to work on today. Murphy keeps it stored in a corner of the clubâs garage under a clothânot that anyone would bother it. âMy sister know you still have this?â
âShe knows,â he answers quietly.
âWhat are you keepinâ it for? Sell it.â
He hands Alexa to me and uncovers the bike. âIâm keeping it for Alexa. She can decide what she wants to do with it when sheâs older.â
âWhat does my sister say?â
âWhy are you so nosy today?â
âToday? Iâm nosy all the time, arenât I?â Actually, Iâm trying to ease up on hovering in my sisterâs business. But itâs hard. I only want good things for her. And I really donât want her to hurt my best friend again.
As if she senses my inner struggle or maybe she just doesnât like me not paying one hundred percent attention to her, Alexa grabs at my cheek. I pretend to bite her tiny hands, making loud nom-nom noises, pulling a series of shrill giggles from her.
Iâll definitely murder anyone who even thinks of hurting this precious little girl.
Since weâre bearing our souls and all it seems like the right time to have a certain conversation Iâve been meaning to have with my brother.
âHey, I need to talk to you about something.â
âSpeak,â Murphy mumbles as he drops down to work on the bike.
Weâre in the back corner of the garage. Not much chance of anyone overhearing us. Even so, I lower my voice.
âI need our conversation to stay between us.â This isnât a completely unusual request. Murphy and I go so far back, we hold plenty of secrets between us. We declared ourselves brothers before we ever earned our Lost Kings MC patches. Over the years weâve shared stuff with only each other when the time wasnât right to bring it to the club.
This is a slightly different situation, but I still trust Murphy to have my back. âItâs about Charlotte.â
He tips his head up. âYeah, what about her?â
âWeâve kind of been seeing each other.â
