Christ, I donât know what to say. This touchy-feely stuff is Rockâs domain. Not mine. Iâm supposed to be the one the guys come to for an ass-kicking.
âI get it, Teller. I do. But you need to keep pushing yourself, so when we find that fuck youâre the one who ends him.â
Some of his attitude evaporates. âIâm tryinâ.â
âYou got Alexa. She needs you.â
Finally, something I said cheers him up. He forces a quick smile. âYeah. Donât know what Iâd do without her.â
âMaybe you should try spending time with someone else?â
He rolls his eyes at me. âAre you suggesting I fuck my troubles away?â
My smirk answers that question. What the hell else am I going to suggest?
âIâm not only fucked up in the head.â He taps his fist against his thigh. âIâm a fuckinâ mess down here.â
The tilt of my head makes him snort. âMy dickâs fine. Iâm still scarred as fuck though.â
âDonât let that stop you. Chicks dig scars. Just makes them want to take care of you and shit.â
I get another eye-roll for that one. âIâve had enough let-me-heal-you pussy thrown at me since I got out of the hospital to make me swear off sex forever.â
âThereâs something I never thought Iâd hear you say.â
âDonât worry about me,â he continues, ignoring my comment. âI ainât interested in turning into some mild, suburban house-husband like you and Rock.â He glances into the gym and screws his face into a scowl. âOr dad of the year like Murphyâs apparently turned into.â
When I finish laughing over the âhouse-husbandâ dig, I lean in closer. âYou still got so much to learn, welterweight. Think acting like you donât need a woman makes you a real man?â
âI donât want any old chickââ He snaps his mouth shut, but no way am I letting that go.
âYou sound like you have someone specific in mind.â
His eyes widen. âNot Trinity. Not anyone. Someoneânot involved in the club.â
I definitely need to dig into that again at some point. âFind the woman whose demons play nice with yours. Thatâs what itâs all about, brother.â
He cocks his head and hesitates before asking, âThat what happened with you and Trinity?â
âYes,â I answer without taking my eyes off him.
He nods and stares off into space for a few seconds. âIf Iâ¦if we get justice for Mariellaâ¦â
Jesus, if that doesnât stab me right in the chest. âI understand. We nailed Killa. Weâll find Ransom.â
His hands open and close a few times, and he stares at them as if heâs picturing snuffing Ransomâs useless life out. âNo oneâs seen that fucker in months.â
âI know.â
âHeâs probably dead.â
âDoubt it. Ransomâs sturdier than a cockroach.â
Murphy taps on my door and wiggles his eyebrows at Teller. âOne of the ladies wants to know if youâre available.â
Teller doesnât smile. Only his disgusted snort indicates he heard Murphy.
Twitch slides in behind Murphy, and I seriously consider nailing a âDo Not Enterâ sign to my office door. âYou need me to put those sandbags out?â Twitch asks.
Itâs a reasonable question, but Murphy scowls at him.
âChrist, let it go, brother.â I laugh. âHeidi ainât interested in him.â
âThanks a lot.â Twitchâs gaze darts between Murphy and me. âDonât be mad at me, Murphy.â He points a bony finger my way. âIâm only nice to Heidi because he told me I had to âshow the old ladies respectâ or heâd gut me. You canât be mad at me for following orders.â
Murphy glances at me with a barely-controlled smirk. He loves fuckinâ with Twitch.
And because I take my role as shit-stirrer seriously, I lift my shoulders in a careless shrug. âSounds like something I couldâve said.â
âHe did,â Twitch insists.
âGet back to work, prospect,â Murphy snaps.
Twitch swings his pleading eyes my way. âCan he really boss me around like that at the gym?â
I stroke my hand over my beard and pretend to think about it for a second. âSure.â
After Twitch stomps out of my office, Murphy snickers. âHeâs so easy to rile up.â
âGetting even for all the shit we gave you when you were a prospect?â I joke.
âFuck yeah, itâs my right as a full-patch,â he answers, tapping his chest where his Road Captain patch would be if he were in his cut. âHe needs a thicker skin if heâs ever gonna patch-in.â
âDid my sister cause more trouble?â Teller asks.
âNo,â Murphy says, shutting Teller down quick before lifting his chin my way. âJust warning you now, Rock called and mentioned having a quick meeting tonight.â
Teller shoots a hopeful look my way. âThink itâs about Ransom?â
The eagerness in Tellerâs voice makes it hard to form an answer. âCould be.â
Heidi and Trinity return with lunch, ending our conversation. Talking about the former president of the Vipers MC leaves me tense. Rock and I need to have a one-on-one before Trinity and I leave.
âHere, let me have her,â Teller says, grabbing Alexa. All the grumpy bastard seems to flow out of him once he has his niece in his arms.
Murphy takes the lunch bags from Trinity. âYou coming?â he asks Heidi.
âIâll meet you in the lunch room,â she mumbles as she carefully watches her brother leave my office.
Curious why Heidiâs staying behind, I focus on her.
âOh, geez, I think about a dozen ovaries just exploded out there,â Trinity says, snickering while she watches Teller and Alexa out on the gym floor.
Heidi chuckles, then turns my way. âI hope youâre not mad at me for stopping by, Uncle Wrath.â She glances out the door and in a softer voice adds, âI really came to check up on my brother. Iâm worried about him.â
âWe all are, sweetheart. I had a talk with him.â Mostly about club business and butting out of her life, but of course I donât share that with her.
âGood. Heâll listen to you.â
Iâm not sure about that, but I nod and smile to reassure her. âHeâll be okay.â
âI hope so. Thank you for letting him work here for a few days.â
After she leaves, I pull Trinity into my lap and bury my face against her neck. âWhen did I turn into a fucking life coach? Thatâs Rockâs job. Not mine.â
âAww.â She shifts against me, wrapping her arms around my neck and holding on tight.
âThis is better,â I mumble against her hair. Inhaling her sweet scent, listening to her breathe, the weight of her in my lapâeverything about her pushes my doubts and irritation away.
âBetter?â she asks.
âYes. I love holding you.â
She runs the back of her hand over my cheek. âHungry?â Leaning back, she snags the bag of food off my desk.
The answer to that is yes, but not for food. âYeah. I wanna lay you out on my desk and eat you.â
âYou think thatâs a good idea with a full house?â
âNo,â I grumble.
âTomorrow.â Her voice lowers. âTomorrow, Iâm all yours. You can do whatever you want to me for three whole days.â Her words, the wicked grin, her husky voiceânone of it helps whatâs going on in my shorts, so I nudge her off my lap.
âGo sit over there.â I prod her toward the chair on the other side of my desk. âOtherwise, Iâm going to fuck you no matter whoâs out there.â
âPatience. It will be so much better if you wait for it.â
âYouâre going to regret those words, Angel Face.â
Wyattâs deep, sexy voice should be outlawed.
Iâm this close to jumping up on his desk and letting him have his way with me. But I take a seat across from him instead.
I can be patient.
He takes a few papers out of his desk and hands th
em to me.
For once, Iâm feeling useful. Every bit of him radiated tension when I came in here. Now, heâs more relaxed as we talk about the next steps for the gym expansion.
âAm I interrupting?â Jake asks, pushing Wyattâs door wide open.
âYou know you are,â I tease.
âWhat do you want?â Wyatt snaps.
Jake ignores Wyattâs toneâI suppose heâs gotten used to it over the years.
âI wanted to ask Trinity if any of her hot friends will be at the wedding.â
âAll my hot friends are taken.â
âOkay, your ugly friends, then.â
âJerk.â I wad up my napkin and throw it at him. He catches it and grins.
Whisper stops by and glares at Jake. âKissing her ass again?â he asks, nodding at me. His gaze skips to Wyatt as if Iâm not even in the room, which isnât unusual and doesnât bother me one bit.
Jake rolls his eyes but doesnât have a chance to respond before Whisper starts badgering Wyatt. âYou got another one of your brothers here?â he asks.
âYeah, just for a couple days.â Wyattâs face remains passive, but I sense his annoyance at being questioned.
Fiancée or not, Furious Fitness is Wrathâs business and not something Iâd stick my nose inâno matter what he said earlier. But Iâve always wondered how long his partnership with the Wolf Knights MCâs Sergeant-at-Arms would last. Especially since Ulfric was dethroned and Merlin took over as president. From the little I know of their club, Ulfric was the only thing keeping them on the right side of civil.
As an olâ lady, I may not butt into MC business, but I damn sure pay attention to whatâs going on in my manâs world.
âFucker can barely walk. Whatâs he supposed to do here?â
Wyattâs eyes narrow at Whisperâs tone. âWhatever the fuck I need him to do. Whatâs your problem?â
âNothing. Just feelinâ outnumbered. Maybe I oughta bring some of my crew in.â
They stare at each other for a few seconds, Jake shifts uncomfortably and stuffs his hands in his pockets. I decide to intervene. âAre you bringing Melanie to the wedding, Whisper?â
He slowly drags his gaze to me, as if it annoys the shit out of him to acknowledge my presence. I paste a sweet smile on my face, while mentally, Iâm flipping him off.
âYou still gonna be hanging around here so much after you wrap your ball and chain âround his neck?â
Iâd love to answer, âYes, asshole, Iâll be right next door in the studio my olâ man bought me.â But Iâm not sure if anyone else knows about Wrathâs plan for me.
âWrath showed me around next door. Looks like itâll be great, Whisper,â I say instead. My cheeks ache from the fake-ass smile I keep in place.
Like the jackass Whisper is, he pretends I didnât say a word and walks out.
âShit, Iâm sorry. I shouldnât have said anything,â I mumble.
Wyatt reaches across the table and rubs his fingers over the back of my hand. âItâs fine.â
âWhat the fuckâs his issue lately?â Jake asks, closing the door behind him.
âHeâs not really on board with the expansion.â Wyatt sits back in his chair, keeping his eye on Jake. âYou know this.â
âYeah, well, itâs gettinâ old.â
âYou sure youâre okay with me leaving for a few days?â Wyatt asks. My heart stops. Iâve been looking forward to this brief trip ever since Wyatt set it up.
Jakeâs face smooths into a mask of seriousness. âBro, how long have I known you?â
Wyatt gestures toward the door. âCome on, you know this place is my baby.â
Jake snorts. âIâll guard it with my life.â
âBullshit. Youâre cheating on me with Sullyâs gym.â
âFuck you. You know Iâm just helping him out. Same as heâs doing here.â Jake turns serious again. âWe got this. Known you a long time and canât remember you taking a real vacation that wasnât âclub business.â He smirks. âEven when you broke your fuckinâ leg you were in here every day.â He glances at me and smiles. âTake your girl away. Sheâs certainly earned it for putting up with your grumpy ass.â
I cover my mouth with my hand to muffle the laughter spilling out.
Wrath chuckles, then lifts his chin at the door. âHaving Teller help out wasnât because I donât trust youââ
âDidnât think it was. Iâll catch you two later.â
âHeâs a good friend.â I say after Jake leaves. âWhatâs up with Whisper, though?â
âDonât know. I keep hoping heâll ask me to buy him out.â
âCan you do it? I mean with everything else going on? Our house has been way over-budget, the expansionââ
The corner of his mouth turns up. âYou worried I canât take care of you, angel?â
âNo. Not at all. Thatâs not what I meant.â
His grin widens. âIâm not worried. Youâre gonna be a famous photographer and take care of me pretty soon.â
Once again, his faith in me leaves me speechless for a second. âSomehow, I donât see you playing house-husband.â
He throws his head back and laughs. âNot according to Teller. He thinks Rock and I have been de-balled by our women.â
Now Iâm the one laughing. âHeâs probably jealous of you two.â I cock my head. âWhat were you talking about for so long, anyway?â
âHe needed a few life lessons.â
âThat doesnât sound ominous or anything,â I tease. The smile dies on my lips. âHeâs still having a hard time about Mariella, isnât he?â
âThatâs part of it.â
My eyes water and I glance down at my hands. âI think about her all the time. I hope he doesnât blame himself.â
âOf course he does. Heâs an overprotective meathead like the rest of us.â
I let out a soft snort and swipe at my damp cheeks.
âWe canât bring her back, but weâll get justice for her, Trin,â he says in a low, earnest voice.
Finally, Iâm able to glance up and meet his ocean-blue eyes. âI believe you.â
CHAPTER FOUR
It ends up being a long day at the gym. Thank fuck Trinity stuck around. She was the only one holding me back from punching someone.
As Murphy predicted, Rockâs determined to annoy me further tonight, insisting we sit down at the table for an informal church.
âWhat?â
His expression says a bunch of things, including âIâm not in the mood for your bullshit.â
Zâs already in his seat and holds out his fist. âShocked youâre still around,â I say. âYouâve been a ghost lately.â
He lifts his shoulders but doesnât give me an answer. Not even a joke or a middle finger. So unlike Z.
Teller looks downright exhausted as he drops into his chair. I shouldâve told him to go home earlier. I get that Murphy wants to keep Teller occupied, but Murphy should know better than anyone that Teller wonât ever admit heâs tired or needs to rest.
After our usual bullshitting and catching up with each other, Rock silences us and points at Sparky who requests help for packaging up some weed.
âWhoâs making the delivery to Loco tomorrow?â Rock asks.
Dex holds up his hand. âI gotta be over that way tomorrow anyway. Can I drop it at the house?â
âAw, you in need of some lovinâ, bro?â Ravage asks.
Dexâs face screws into a scowl, making it obvious the last thing heâs interested in is getting serviced by one of Locoâs working girls. âYou offering?â
âLocoâs girls are gonna get a complex if you keep sending Dex,â Ravage says to Rock. âWaste of free pussy.â
Rock sits back and pins Ravage with a stare that wipes the smile off his face. âThe last thing I need is you getting lost in Locoâs whorehouse.â He nods at Dex again. âLoco has some intel on the MC pushing in from Vermont, so I need you to meet up with him at some point,â Rock says.
âYou
sure heâll be okay meetinâ with me?â Dex asks. Smart question. Loco loves dragging Rock to meet-ups, just for the hell of it.
âYeah. Already spoke to the fucker twenty fuckinâ times today.â He turns my way next. âHowâs Dylan doing?â
Not the question Iâd been expecting. âFine. Why?â
âChaser was lookinâ for an update.â
âChaser and Stump are coming for the wedding, right? We still sending them home with a package?â Murphy asks.
âYeah.â
Rock picks up a bunch of papers in front of him and shuffles through them without seeming to read them. Silence falls over the table while we wait for whateverâs next on his agenda. âGrinderâs getting moved to Pine Correctional at the end of the week.â
âNo shit,â Z and I end up saying at the same time.
âYou think he might have a chance of gettinâ released some day?â Teller asks.
âMaybe.â
âYeah, since he hasnât had anyone asking him to shank other inmates for the last ten years, maybe heâs finally earned some goodwill,â Murphy points out.
âLet me know when heâs transferred. Iâd like to go see him,â I tell Rock.
He raises an eyebrow.
âIâll tell him Iâm gettinâ married. Make him happy knowing he won that bet.â
Finally, Rockâs mouth twitches into a smile. âYeah, okay.â
We run through some more minor business, and Rock finally dismisses everyone.
Everyone except me. He doesnât even have to say anything. By the way Rock keeps his eyes on me, itâs clear I shouldnât bother gettinâ out of my chair. Z sticks around, too.
âWhatâs on your mind?â I ask as soon as everyoneâs gone.
As usual, Rock gets right to the point. âHowâd Teller do today?â
Thereâs no sense in lying to Rock. âRough start, but he held it together.â
âI figured.â
âI had a talk with him. The only thing he needs is justice for Mariella.â
He blows out a frustrated breath. âIâm trying. Swayâs been pressuring the Viperâs New Jersey charter, but they claim Ransomâs out bad. They swear they have no plans to re-establish a charter up here and donât know where the fuck Ransomâs hiding.â
