Page 28 of Tattered on My Sleeve (Lost Kings MC 4)
See, this right here is one problem. I donât want all my possessive instincts stirred up.
I do laugh when Wrath pushes her off his lap and she almost falls because she canât balance herself on her seven-inch fuck-me stilettos.
Strike one.
She stumbles over toward me and leans on the bar. âHeâs in a worse mood than usual. Whatâs his issue?â
I wasnât aware that we were friends, but I answer anyway, trying to be a good hostess. âMaybe he didnât want you sitting in his lap, with the broken leg and all.â
Or maybe he meant what he said earlier.
She glances over her shoulder at him. âOh yeah. Oops.â She giggles and I work on keeping my hand still so I donât smack her. We almost died the other night and heâs laid up for the next four months, yeah, itâs a real laughfest.
Bitch.
Rock stops by the bar again. âYou okay back here?â
âYup.â
âHey, Rock. We miss you at the club,â Lexi coos while running her hand up his arm.
Even though he smiles back, he removes her hand and takes a step away.
Strike two.
âZ and Dex treating you okay?â
âOh yeah.â She lets out the fakest giggle and tosses her hair. I roll my eyes. âBut it took two men to fill your shoes.â
Good God.
Rock smirks, and turns to me. âIâm gonna be outside waitinâ for Hope. She should be here any minute.â
âSounds good. Will you at least let me say hi to her before you tuck her away upstairs?â I respond with a wink.
âIâll do my best.â He takes another step from the bar. âGood to see you, Lex.â
âAre any of these guys DTF?â Lexi bitches at me.
I scan the room. No one here I dislike enough to sic her on.
âMaybe one of the prospects?â I suggest. They never get any ass.
Finally she wobbles away. Just in time too, because Hope breezes in about five seconds later.
âFinally!â I shout and throw my arms around her. She laughs and hugs me back.
âRock said you were bringing supplies.â
She nods at the hallway. âHe asked the prospects to unload my car.â
I quirk an eyebrow. Just how much did she bring?
âIâll go check. Make sure you give him lots of attention,â I say nodding at Wrath.
Her gaze sweeps the room, nose wrinkling at the antics of some of the guys. But her lips curve into a smile when she spots Wrath.
âHope! Youâre finally here,â Wrath calls out.
She turns to me. âDid the doctor ever tell you how bad his head injury was?â
It takes a second, but I realize sheâs joking. When Iâm finished laughing, I tap the bag in her hand. âWhatâs in there?â
She tilts her head in Wrathâs direction. âHe asked for Jack Daniels.â
âOh boy, heâll love you forever.â
She laughs and crosses the room, shyly handing him the bag. Wrath said she brought him burgers in the hospital. Itâs cute that theyâve reached some strange, friendly truce since the accident.
Shaking my head, I walk down to the kitchen to make sure the prospects donât make a mess out of my pantry while theyâre unloading Hopeâs car.
When I return, Wrathâs over on the couch with Rock and Hope. Without me behind the bar, no one could figure out how to serve themselves, so thereâs a bit of a line waiting for me. I get most of them taken care of pretty quick. When I glance up, Hopeâs on her way over, looking dejected and annoyed. My gaze flicks to Wrath and Rock who seem to be having an intense discussion.
âIâve been sent away,â Hope grumbles as she leans her elbows on the counter.
It doesnât take a genius to figure out why. âClub business?â
âSomething about Wrathâs gym.â
Okay. Furious Fitness isnât exactly top secret, but I feel I should warn Hope should she ever overhear something relating more closely to the MC. Especially as I spot a number of other members from our downstate charter in the room. âAlways play dumb when it comes to club business, Hope.â
Poor girl reacts like I threw a bucket of ice water in her face. Shit. I should have kept my mouth shut. âIâm sorry, Hope. I didnât mean to sound like I was scolding you. Just ifâ¦you know, we were ever around any other clubs or one of our other chartersâalways act as if you hear nothing.â
She pauses then leans back over the bar. âSorry, Trinity. I know youâre just looking out for me.â
Thatâs a relief. The last thing I want to do is disrespect Rock by offending his woman. She flashes a pained smile at me. I try to picture myself in her worldâwearing a suit, arguing in a courtroomâIâd be completely out of place. And while Iâm aware of and understand a womanâs place in the MC world, Iâm sure it pisses Hope off. âIâm used to it, but I imagine itâs weird for you.â
She still looks a little forlorn. Even worse, I notice a number of the guys in the room checking her out. Rockâs wrapped up in his discussion with Wrath, so he hasnât noticed yet. Only a matter of time before he does and loses his shit.
âFYI, I wouldnât keep standing like that in a room full of bikers. You know how they say men think about sex seventy-five percent of the time? With these guys, itâs closer to ninety-nine percent.â
She doesnât answer, but she does turn and glance at Rock, whoâs got his eye on her now.
Z walks up behind her and by the grin on his face, I know heâs about to cause trouble. âHey, Hope. Keep standing like that and youâre just begging for a spankinâ,â Z says, eying her up and down.
Her reaction is pretty funny. She straightens up and yanks her shirt down over her ass. âTold ya,â I say through a mouthful of giggles.
âYou startled me, you perv!â she yelps, slapping his arm.
Z gives her one of his panty-dropping smiles, but Hopeâs immune to anyoneâs charm but Rockâs.
Although, if he keeps acting this way, âRockâs gonna kill you,â I warn him.
âNah. Hopeâs like that hot sister-in-law you got inappropriate feelings for, but wouldnât touch on a dare.â
She has no idea what to do with that. âThanks, I think.â
Z winks and I know whatever heâs about to say will embarrass me. Heâs got some sort of agenda tonight and I canât figure it out. âNow you,â he says, focusing all his attention on me. âNothing about my feelings for you are brotherly. What are you doing later?â
Is he fucking kidding? In front of Hope? Why?
âCan I get a Crown and Coke to go, please?â Hope asks.
After she practically runs away with her drink. I turn my glare on Z. âWhy would you try to embarrass me in front of her?â Shit, my nose stings and my cheeks feel like Iâve been standing in front of the oven for too long.
âGive it a second.â He glances over his shoulder at Hope, whoâs now snuggled up against Rock. âI love the girl, but she wonât be able to keep her mouth shut.â
Sure enough, Wrathâs angry gaze swings our way. The scowl on his face deepens when he notices, Z running his fingers over my hand. âYouâre an ass,â I grumble, while snatching my hand away.
A wave of people come in the front door and Iâm swamped. Not enough that I miss Wrath slap Z on the backâhardâand tell him Rockâs looking for him. Z laughs and ducks away.
Wrath crosses his massive arms over his chest and leans against the wall behind the bar. âYou almost done, babe?â
âIn a minute.â
Out of the corner of my eye, I catch him yanking his phone out his of pocket.
A few minutes later I realize what he did. Hoot nudges me out of the way to take over bar duty. I edge out from behind the bar. A few of the guys ask where Iâm going. Bitching about Hoot not being as pretty a bartender.
âWhatâs wrong?â I ask Wrath as I approach.
âGettinâ tired of you waitinâ on everyone else. Youâre supposed to be waitinâ on me.â He fl
ashes that boyish smile of his that does me in every time.
He bitches about the crutches the whole way to my room and drops them at the foot of the bed as soon as weâre inside.
âWhat was that all about with Z?â he asks.
I canât stop the immediate eye-roll. âMessing with you. Obviously it worked.â
âWhat did he say?â
âI donât know, he made a joke about spanking Hopeâs assââ
âOh, so heâs as good as dead,â he quips and flings himself onto the bed.
âYou need your pain meds?â
His jaw clenches and I know he wants to say no. Wrathâs very much a Real men donât need pain killers type of guy.
âI probably shouldnât. Had a lot to drink.â
I hesitate because this is weird. âUm, Iâm going to change.â
âOkay,â he answers making no move toâ¦what I donât know. Whereâs he supposed to go? I grab a nightshirt. As my hand closes over the bathroom door, Wrath asks, âWhere you going?â
âUh, in the bathroom to change.â
âWhy? Iâve seen you naked.â
Yes, thatâs true. I turn and find him grinning. âWhat do you expect? A strip show?
âNo.â
âThis is weird,â I mutter.
âWhat?â
I point at him and then myself. âYou, me, us, this whole domestic weirdness weâre doing.â
The smile slides right off his face. âWhy? You were staying up in my room before the fight,â he says softly. Too softly for Wrath.
âThat was different.â
âWhy? Because I told you I love you?â
Shit. âAbout thatâ¦. Can we not tell people about whatever this is just yet?â
Heâs silent, but his jawâs ticking like crazy. âTell me why,â he finally says.
Why? Because this is never going to work. âEveryone knows youâre just staying here because of the cast.â
âTrinity, I could have figured something else out. Hell, I could have kicked you out of here and told you to go stay up in my room if I really wanted to.â
My throatâs so tight I can barely speak. âIf this doesnâtâ¦if we donât make it this timeâ¦I donât want everyone feeling sorry for me.â Then thereâs the biggest reason of all. The one I hate the most because it means Iâm only thinking of myself. âI donât want to be kicked out.â I hate how pathetic and miserable I sound. Inside Iâm ticked heâs forcing me to voice my insecurities.
âShit, baby. Come here.â He holds out his hands to me, but Iâm rooted to my spot. âTrinity, come here. Now,â he says, much louder.
That voice my body responds to, and I find myself in front of him. His hands curl over my hips, holding me in place. âIâd never do that to you.â Thereâs no judgment or anger in his voice and I relax a bit. âBesides, you know the club wouldnât survive without you takinâ care of us.â
I snort and lift my gaze to meet his eyes. Those deep, ocean-eyes, pulling me under. Making me think maybe we have a chance.
Did I finally get through to her? Itâs hard to tell. For fuckâs sake, I donât know what the hell Iâm doing. What does she need?
To feel secure, wanted, and loved. To be safe.
I know I can give her all of that. And more.
She shakes her head and sighs. âYou guys would find some other chick to help out.â
âIs that what you think? Youâre replaceable? Fuck without you weâd probably starve to death for one thing.â She chuckles and looks away. âWeâd definitely be rolling around in our own filth.â She laughs a little harder.
âButââ I struggle to come up with the right words. âEven when Iâve been mad at you, Iâve needed you in my life, Trin.â
The admission seems to startle her, but then her face softens. âI always feel better when youâre around,â she says.
Hell, thatâs practically an I love you from Trinity. âEven when Iâm a jerk?â
âYeah, then I just fantasize about slitting your throat.â
I throw my head back and laugh. âRemind me to chuck my pocketknife.â Her mouth quirks. âOkay, will you be more comfortable if we donât go public right now?â
She doesnât even hesitate. âYes.â
âUntil the cast comes off?â I ask, because, fuck thatâs months away.
She nods. âAnd youâre sure you want to be with me?â
âIâve never been surer of anything in my life, babe.â I run my hand over my head, wincing when I brush over the bandage. âFuck, thatâs a long time. Four months?â
Her eyes well up. âIâm sorry. Maybeââ
I press a finger to her lips. âIf thatâs what you need, then thatâs what weâll do. But in here, together. Weâre doing this for real.â I poke my finger at the door. âAny of themââ Fuck, I hate this. âYou shut them down, and if they give you shit, send them to me.â
âPeople are going to wonder.â
âNo one will have the balls to stick their nose in our business. Theyâll just assume Iâm being my regular asshole self.â
âThatâs not fair. Iâm sorry.â She slides to the floor and grabs for my belt.
âWhat are you doing?â
She flutters her lashes at me and her lips curve into a smile that I think she intended to be sexy, but itâs more sad. âYou really have to ask?â
My hand closes over hers and I pull her away. In my shorts, my dickâs cursing me out. âNo. Not like this.â
Her bottom lip juts out. âWhat? Why?â
âYou think Iâm mad at you, and thatâs not whatâs going on here.â
Her smile disappears.
I jerk my chin at the bathroom door. âGo change. Iâm exhausted and I bet you are too.â
She balances on my good leg and pushes up off the floor. âIâm sorry Iâm so fucked up.â
âBabe, weâre all fucked up in one way or another. One day youâll tell me what your reason is.â
Stunned honey eyes stare back at me. What? She thought I wasnât going to want to know every piece of her eventually? âBe surprised all you want, Angel Face. But I intend to be your man in every single way.â
Zâs the first one at the dining room table the next morning, which is unusual. Still pissed about last night, I grunt at him instead of an actual greeting.
Trinity hurries past me into the kitchen and once again, Iâm irritated that my girlâs serving everyone breakfast.
Except sheâs not my girlâyet. Iâm trying hard to honor her request, but itâs annoying the shit out of me.
By the way Z keeps staring, Iâm waiting for him to say something.
âSorry about last night, bro.â
Surprised, I raise an eyebrow at him.
He shrugs. âI wanna see you two work your shit out.â
âIt ainât me, brother.â
Z cocks his head, but doesnât seem surprised. âI neverâ¦not until she told me a couple weeks ago and then it all clickedâ¦if Iâd known you two had something back thenâ¦I neverââ
Fuck me. âYeah, I know.â
âYou gonna claim her or not?â
Z must think this cast is gonna stop me from beating his ass. âSheâs not ready.â
He gives me a So what? shrug.
âNo. There are some things she needs me to tell her to do, and othersâ¦â Yeah, Trinityâs been tough to figure out, but Iâm learning. Slowly. âBesides, I ainât claiminâ an olâ lady who doesnât want me to be her olâ man.â
Z nods, and I realize he understands. âShe worried about the club?â
My shoulders lift. âI guess. She had a fucked up childhood.â
He looks away for a second. âYeah, I always kinda figured.â
My hands clench into fists because I can only guess what made him say that. Fuck.
Murphy swaggers in, and Iâm overwhelmed with the urge to punch him. Donât know why. Instead of sitting, he curls his hands over the back of one of the chairs and leans over. âWhe
reâs Trin at?â
âWhy?â I growl at him.
âNeed a blowjob,â he says with a cocky smirk.
Never hit a brother.
Fuck that shit.
Unless heâs earned it.
That commentâs definitely grounds for a beating. Cast doesnât slow me down a bit as I jump out of my chair, reach across the table and wrap my fingers around his neck. Zâs up so fast his chair clatters to the floor. He slaps his hand over my arm. âLet him go,â he says to me with complete calm.
Just one more squeeze and I release the little fuck.
âSeriously, bro?â he asks Murphy.
Murphy leans over and coughs. âFucking hell.â He lifts his wary gaze to me before standing up straight. âWhat the fuck? I thought you were just staying in her roomââ
âLet it fucking go, and watch your mouth, asshole,â Z advises as both of us sit back down.
Murphâs got no sense of self-preservation, because he pulls out a chair and drops into it. He runs his hand over his neck, but wonât meet my eyes. âSorry. Fuckinâ irritated from seeing Heidi and Axel all over each other last night.â
Z cocks his head. âWhen was she up here?â
He shrugs. âShe came up to surprise him. T ended up chasing her home.â
I feel for him, but Iâm still fuckinâ pissed. âFrom now on, find someone else to work out your Heidi-frustrations.â
Murphy doesnât get to respond because Rock and Hope join our tense group. He casts a suspicious glance at each of us before pulling out a chair for Hope. Sweet and oblivious as always, she smiles at everyone, as if weâre not a crew of degenerate fuckwits.
Teller joins us next.
âThought you were home?â Murphy asks.
âNah, came back after I dropped Heidi off.â
Murphy grunts and looks away.
Hopeâs gaze keeps darting between Z and me. As if sheâs worried weâre gonna kill each other. If only she knew. Murphyâs more likely to get the fuck beaten out of him at the moment.
Trinity brings mugs out for everyone, then coffee. Hope chews on her lip as she watches Trinity move around the table.
