âTrinity?â she calls.
âYou need something, Hope?â
Curious about what sheâs up to, I wait for Hopeâs answer.
âDonât you ever eat breakfast?â
âSure, in the kitchen while Iâm getting everyone elseâs stuff together.â
âOh, no wonder you stay so skinny,â Hope answers with a grin.
âLook whoâs talking,â Trin jokes back.
Hopeâs gaze flicks over each one of us. âWell, Iâm kind of on testosterone overload. Would you mind eating breakfast out here today?â
âSure, Iâll be right back.â
Hope jumps up and follows Trinity into the kitchen. Girl is persistent, which is good because otherwise Trin will dawdle and find excuses not to return.
I lift my chin at Rock. âWhatâs your woman up to?â
One side of his mouth kicks up and he shrugs. âYou heard her. Weâre boring.â
The girls are gone for a while, making it impossible to pay attention to the conversation at the table.
Hope returns first, hands Rock his breakfast and kisses his cheek like itâs the most normal thing in the world. Trinity sets plates in front of Z and me, then hesitates. Hopeâs not going to be deterred though, she taps the chair next to her.
Murphy apparently still needs his ass kicked. âHey,â he mumbles.
Teller turns and scowls at him.
âBirch is coming,â Hope explains to the little bitch.
Still shocked at the way this morningâs turning out, I must be staring at Hope. She glances up and pink stains her cheeks. âHow do you feel today?â she asks.
âHung over. Sore. But happy to be home.â Happy as fuck to have finally weaseled my way into Trinityâs room too. Even if she slapped a bunch of conditions on our arrangement.
âI think everyone is relieved youâre home,â she says with a chuckle. Her attention turns to Trinity, who hasnât moved. Hope picks up the milk and shoves it at her. âSorry, didnât mean to hog up the milk, Trin.â
Itâs enough to pull Trinity out of whateverâs bothering her. âThanks, Hope,â she mutters.
Thanks is inadequate. Sheâs done more for my girl in five minutes than Iâve been able to do in five weeks.
âSucks weâre gonna miss the run with Swayâs guys down to Virginia,â Z says. âLast big run before weâre all trapped in cages for winter.â
Like I donât feel bad enough about all the shit going on. âFucking go,â I grumble at him.
âNo fucking way. We all go, or no one goes,â Murphy shoots back. As if loyalty is going to stop me from kicking his ass today.
âWeâll do up a big one at the start of the next season for you,â Teller adds.
They turn to discussing what upgrades they plan to work on over the winter. It just depresses me because I probably wonât be ready to ride at the beginning of the next season. And I sure as fuck ainât in any condition to work out in the garage all winter long.
âDonât you ever get tired of all the boy talk?â Hope whispers, loud enough for all of us to hear.
Nervous laughter tumbles out of Trinity. âNot really.â
âWhat do you like to do, Trin?â Hope asks.
She shrugs. âThis place keeps me busy. I canât wait for next spring. The guys are going to put in a garden so I can grow some veggies and stuff here.â
Hell yeah. She got so excited about farmers markets and feeding me all that healthy crap during my training. Canât wait to help her out with that, plus it will keep her busy. âWeâll get the prospects started on that early, so itâs ready for you,â I say.
Trinâs mouth quirks, but she doesnât respond.
âSo gardening? Are you the one who keeps the big Buddha guy looking spiffy?â Hope asks.
Trinity finally smiles and seems less freaked-out. âYeah, thatâs me.â
âNeat. Iâve never been able to keep any plants alive for more than a week.â
âSparky helps,â Trinity explains. Please. Sparky barely leaves the basement. He ainât much help. Girlâs too modest.
âWhich one is he?â Hope asks.
Thatâs Rockâs cue to interrupt because the answer is, The mastermind behind our weed-growing operation in the basement, that Iâve never told you about.
âBabe, is that all youâre gonna eat?â he asks.
She turns and glares at him, making me almost choke on my toast. âYes, Iâm getting fat enough, thanks to you.â
Havenât noticed any fat on her. If anything she looks better than she did when she first showed up, looking like a fucking skeleton. But I donât think Rock will appreciate that observation.
âYou need more protein,â I say instead, pointing at her now-empty bowl.
âFuck, here we go. Mr. Clean Eating Fighter,â Teller interrupts with a roll of his eyes.
I shrug. âWhatever, welterweight.â
âLetâs go, mountain man. This welterweight will kick your ass,â Teller shouts, jumping up and flexing for everyone. Murphy throws him a kidney punch, while Z and I laugh our asses off.
âSit down before I punt you across the room with my good leg,â I warn him.
The girls arenât impressed with our antics.
âWhat else do you do for fun around here?â Hope asks.
âI read a lot,â Trinity answers.
Huh. Thatâs news to me. Weâve been spending night and day together for weeks and I havenât seen her with a book in her hands yet. Of course, Iâve been monopolizing all her time, making her take care of me. Between that and all the stuff she does for the house, no wonder sheâs had no time to do anything for herself. Makes me feel like an asshole.
âI donât know what kind of music you like, but my friend, Sophie, has an extra ticket to see Afterlife on Friday. You think youâd like to go?â Hope asks, nudging Trinâs arm.
âHey,â Rock huffs in an offended tone.
âGirlsâ night,â Hope says without turning her head.
After what Rockâs told me about Sophie getting drunk and trying to jump him, I canât say Trinity hanging out with her thrills me.
Trinity hasnât answered yet.
Hope, on the other handâgirl only has eyes for Rock. The idea of Trinity spending more time with her is very appealing. I like the idea of her having more girlfriends.
âCome on. Youâll probably need a night off from playing nurse to Wrath, right?â she encourages, jerking her chin at me.
My lips quirk up. Funny girl. I throw a look at Rock that I want him to read as Make this happen, motherfucker.
Trinity looks to me. Silently asking for permission and my chest tightens. I nod and she turns back to Hope.
âYeah, I like them. Sounds like fun.â
Hope acts like a five-year-old on her way to Build-A-Bear. âCool! Youâll like Sophie and Lilly. Hell, theyâll probably like you more than me.â
âWhereâs the show, Hope? Not the dive we went to last time?â Z asks. Christ, I wish heâd let that shit with Lilly go.
âNo. Downtown at the arena,â Hope answers. He and Rock share a look. Hopeâs nose wrinkles.
Thatâs right Cinderella, youâre not taking my girl downtown alone and unprotected.
Itâs such a lovely fall day, after breakfast, I set up an over-sized lounge chair for Wrath outside. He grumbles the whole way through the kitchen and out the back door. He really hates me helping him down the back steps. But once I show him the spot I made, his grouchiness disappears.
âHowâd you know I was gettinâ tired of being inside?â
Because heâs like a bear in a cage when heâs cooped up for too long. âJust took a guess.â
He flops down and I grab his crutches while he stretches out. Before I open my mouth to protest, he pulls me down next to him and tucks me against his side.
Except for the occasional noises from inside the house, the only sounds are some very vocal birds and the wind through the trees. Itâs peaceful, and for the first time in
a long time, Iâm content.
âLooking forward to the concert?â he asks after a few quiet minutes.
âA little. You sure you donât mind?â
He tilts his head down, so he can see me. âNo. Why would I mind?â
âI donât know.â
âItâll be good for you to get to know Hope better.â
Thatâs too funny to ignore. âMade your peace with the fact that sheâs not going anywhere, did ya?â
âSomething like that.â
Heâs quiet afterward. Between the breeze, the birds, and the thump of Wrathâs heart under my ear, I drift off to sleep.
Wrath is as demanding as a toddler, and I spend my week running him to the gym and doctor appointments. By the time Friday rolls around, Iâm eager to get out of the house. Maybe that was his plan all along.
Hope knocks on my door in the afternoon. Sheâs bouncing with excitement. Iâm baffled by her eagerness to spend time with me. Did Rock ask her to be my friend? I hope not, because the more I get to know her, the more I like her.
Holding up a traincase of makeup, she bustles into my room, making her the second person whoâs ever been in my space. âSo,â she says, âI own a ton of makeup. But every time I use it, I end up looking like a cracked-out clown.â
From the bed, Wrath snorts. Hopeâs cheeks flush pink when she notices him sprawled out. âFor a big guy, you blend in awfully well. I thought you were in the garage with the guys.â
âNope, but continue. I want to hear more about this cracked-out clown thing,â he says while pointing at her face and twirling his finger in a circle.
Her mouth twitches, but she ignores him and turns back to me. âSince you do eye makeup so well, I was hoping youâd help me out?â
To say Iâm surprised is putting it mildly. âYeah, I can do that.â
âThank you.â She glances around the room and back at Wrath. âItâs still early, do you want me to come back later?â
âNah. We can get started now.â
I throw a pointed look at Wrath, who doesnât seem to take the hint. âWhat?â
âAre you planning to stick around for a makeover?â
He curls his lip. âAre you kicking me out?â
Hope giggles and I shrug. âIf you really want to stay for this, by all means.â
âIâm thinking of wearing a dress? Unless you think it will be too cold?â Hope asks me, dismissing Wrath entirely.
âWeâre going to be inside.â
âGood point, Iâll be right back.â She drops the traincase on my desk and darts out the door. Wrath shakes his head as he watches her leave.
âYouâre really going to kick me out?â he asks.
âYup. Change of scenery will do you good.â
âDoctor told me to rest. You were there, you heard him.â
âHe also told you to move around, so you donât end up with a pulmonary embolism.â
He waves his hand and makes a dismissive snort-grunt sort of noise. âIâm perfectly healthy.â
âGood, then take your perfectly healthy ass to the living room. Otherwise Iâm going to practice my eyelining skills on you.â
He sits up and gives me one of his devilish smiles. âI might like that, baby.â
Itâs such an unexpected thing for him to say, it takes a minute for it to sink in before laughing.
âGive me a kiss, and Iâll go.â
I glance at the slightly open door. Hope will be back any minute.
âI know what youâre thinking,â he says all low and smoky. âDo it anyway.â
When I hesitate, he moves to lie back down. âOkay, make sure whatever you pick matches my outfit.â
In two steps, I make it to the side of the bed and grab a fistful of his shirt, pulling him to me. Thatâs the extent of my bravery. Wrath takes over from there, gripping my hips and pulling me into his lap. His hand works through my hair, holding me while his mouth seals over mine. My body has a mind of its own and doesnât care that Hope might walk in at any moment. My arms wrap around him and Iâm pretty sure Iâm grinding my hips into him as well.
He groans and pulls away. âThatâll give you something to think about tonight.â
âWhat?â I ask, pulling back.
Fixing his gaze on the door, he wonât meet my eyes.
âYou donât trust me? You think Iâm such a whore, Iâll pick up some random while Iâm out with Hope?â
âWhat? No. Thatâs not what I said.â
âItâs what you meant.â
âAre you a mind reader now?â
I canât think with my body plastered against his, so I drag myself out of his lap and take a few steps back.
His hands are balled into fists, his head hanging down. âI donât want to fight with you Trinity. Iâm done.â
âWith me?â
His head snaps up. âNever. You donât get it so Iâll say it again. Iâll never be done with you. But I am done arguing with you over bullshit.â
Now I feel stupid for overreacting. âTell me what you meant then?â
âIâm pissed I canât go with youânot because I donât trust youâbecause I worry about you. Iâm a useless invalid right now.â
Wow. Thatâs a lot for Wrath to admit. Like weâre really a couple and this might last. âYouâre never useless.â I take a step closer and wrap my arms around him. Because heâs who he is, he takes the opportunity to nuzzle his face against my boobs. âYouâre an ass,â I tease. When he looks up, I brush my knuckles over his cheek. âDonât worry about me, okay? I can take care of myself. You taught me all those kick-ass self-defense moves, remember?â
He smirks. âYeah.â
âShould I come back later?â Hope asks from the doorway.
âNo, I was just leaving.â Wrath pushes me back so he can stand, and I hand him his crutches. âTrin threatened to use her eyeliner on me, so Iâm outta here.â
Hope giggles and opens the door wide for him, standing back so he can pass by.
When heâs gone, she breezes in and drops an armful of clothes on my bed. She shakes her head. âBoy do you have your hands full.â
Knowing Wrathâs worried about me, my safety, tangles up every one of my emotions. âYou have no idea.â
âI canât believe youâre letting them do this,â I bitch at Rock when I find him in the living room.
Fucker has the nerve to laugh at me. âOne doesnât let Hope do anything, brother. And I donât think you have much say over Trinny, either.â
Like hell I donât.
âFuck off,â I mumble. Pointing down at my cast, I feel the urge to remind him of our recent misadventure. âItâs kinda soon after this bullshit to be letting them run around unprotected.â
âZ and I took care of those fucks.â
True enough. Still bugs me.
Music drifts out from Trinâs room. Iâm happy sheâs having fun with Hope, even if Iâm annoyed I donât get to watch them dress each other. âItâs like backstage at a fashion show down there. Why couldnât they do that shit in your room?â
Rock shrugs. âWhoâs coming up tonight?â he asks to distract me.
âFuck if I know,â I grumble. I havenât done a damn thing related to my job all week. Rock really should strip my patch.
âYou worried about something else?â he asks. When I shrug, he chuckles.
I may have told a small white lie to avoid an argument with Trinity. I trust her, but this relationship stuff is new to her too. Even though I understand where itâs coming from, her refusal to acknowledge what we are to the people weâre closest to is fucking with me. Having it tied to something I canât controlâmy broken legâonly makes it worse.
âTheyâre not going out to pick up guys,â Rock says.
âI know Hope isnât. But those other twoââ
Rock jabs his elbow into my ribs and I shove him back. âI called Blue. Heâll make sure theyâre protected at the show, and Birch will be on their tail. Theyâll be
fine,â he assures me.
Thatâs a bit of a relief. Blueâs a solid guy. The arena theyâre going to is in our territory, so they should be fine.
Trying to distract myself with the television is pointless. Rock disappears into the office and I consider asking him if he needs help.
The sound of the girls giggling makes my mouth twitch up. âWeâre almost ready to go,â Hope announces.
Rock pokes his head out of the war room and I about piss my pants laughing at the look on his face when he takes in her outfit.
Trinityâs arrival draws my attention away from them. Fuck me. Go ahead and call me a fuckinâ pansy, but I recognize the dress sheâs wearing right away.
âJacket?â Rock asks Trinity.
She holds up a black leather jacket. âYes, Dad.â
âVery funny,â he mutters as he snaps a picture of the girls. I assume heâs going to send it to Blue. Smart man.
Hope grabs Trinâs hand, dragging her to the door before I have a chance to say anything to my girl. âLetâs go. I donât like the bossy caveman faces Iâm seeing.â
âHey, wait a sec,â Rock calls her to him.
I canât get to Trinity fast enough. Thankfully, she meets me half way. Uncertain honey eyes stare up at me.
Leaning over I kiss her cheek. Her soft, sugary scent rushes straight to my head. âYou look fuckinâ beautiful,â I whisper against her hair. Her breath catches. My hands tighten on her waist, holding her still. âI remember the last time you wore this dress.â
âYou do?â she whispers.
âYup. Remember every second Iâve spent with you. Good and bad.â
âWy-â
âGo,â I cut her off. âHave fun. Iâll be waiting for you when you get back.â My hand slides over the curve of her ass. âWhen you step inside the bedroom later, I want you to take everything but the dress off.â
I pull away and look in her eyes to make sure she sees Iâm dead fucking serious. Her cheeks flush pink and pretty. âOkay,â she whispers.
Fuck, yeah. âGet out of here, before I change my mind and fuck you right now,â I grumble at her.
She chuckles and pushes me away. Grabbing Hopeâs hand, she says, âLetâs run before they change their minds.â
They head for the door, and I watch them go. Thinking about what Iâm going to do to Trinity when she returns has my dick so hard it hurts.
