She hesitates. âYou donât want me crowding you again.â
âYeah, I do. Get over here.â
She sets the apple down, takes a swig of orange juice, then climbs up and settles against me. My mouth finds her forehead and I press a kiss there. âNo more bullshit, babe. You and me. I mean it,â I murmur against her cheek.
âOkay.â
Although she agreed, I donât think what I said sunk in. I sift my fingers through her hair. âThese last few weeks made me real happy.â She picks her head up and stares at me. Now sheâs getting it. âNo more going to war with each other, Trinity. Youâre mad at me, you tell me. If Iâm an asshole, just say it. Youâre feeling bad, take it out my cock. No one elseâs. No more of this dysfunctional tit-for-tat thing weâve been doinâ for years.â
A deep, ragged sob tears from her throat. Yeah, I finally admitted what weâve been doing for way too long. Big fat tears slide down her cheeks. âWyatt, what are you asking of me?â
âTo be my girl and Iâll be your man. Thatâs it. Nothing complicated, Angel Face.â
âWy-â
âHello, kids!â Rock announces as he flings the door open.
Motherfucker has the worst goddamn timing. Asshole.
Trinity, of course, jumps up like a scalded cat, cursing a blue streak. She whacks my bad leg in the process.
âOw, fuck, Trin,â I growl at her. Iâm so pissed sheâs leaving.
âSorry, sorry,â she mumbles. âUh, Iâm gonna go.â She runs out of the room and I want to choke the living fuck out of Rock.
I also want to tell him what he interrupted. Thought I was about to get somewhere with her. But heâs got that smug fucking smile on his face that I just want to punch.
âKnock it off, dick,â I grumble as I settle back into the bed.
âSorry I interrupted cuddle time.â
I return his glare. âFuck you.â
My stomach rumbles and I glare at the hospital tray. âYou come here to tell me anything useful? Maybe bring me something?â I ask.
âWhat the hell do you want, balloons and flowers?â
âA fucking magazine would be nice. Iâm bored as fuck.â
He gestures at the door. âDidnât look bored a minute ago.â
Not sure if itâs the accident that rattled him or something else, but brother is seriously testing my patience today. More than normal. When I say Rockâs like my brother, I mean it in every wayâespecially the pissing me off until I want to knock him out way. I notice heâs by himself and wonder if thatâs what crawled up his ass.
âDid Hope come with you?â
His jaw clenches. Yup, thatâs whatâs bugging him.
âNo,â he spits out.
âShe okay?â
He comes closer and I take notice of his torn up hands. Brother fought someone recently. âI dunno. Sheâs. . .You donât realize, but she lost her dad when she was a teenager. Lost her husband young. I think this rattled her.â
Poor girl. I knew about her husband, obviously. âOh, fuck. I didnât know about her dad. Thatâs rough.â
âYeah, and her mom went to shit after, so she basically got abandoned there.â
âOkay. Got it.â Maybe Hope fits in better with us than I thought.
He rubs the back of his neck like I know he does when heâs stressed. âIâm afraid this brought up bad shit for her. Iâm worried sheâs not dealing with it well.â
Probably not. âNot surprising. After getting through that other shit, sounds like she lived a pretty normal life âtil you barged in.â
âThanks,â he grumbles back.
Of course he thinks the worst. âIâm not trying to be a dick. I just donât know how you think itâs going to work out between the two of you.â
âThis wasnât exactly normal.â
Is he kidding? This kind of shit happens all the time in our world. Weâve lived through much worse and I canât understand why heâd wanna drag someone as soft as Hope into something so foreign to her. âYou know what I mean. Look, I get it, sheâs a total sweetheart. Treats everyone with respect. Sheâs not stuck up. I like how nice she is to Trinity. Hell, I like her. But I think soon sheâs going to start dividing your focus. You canât be half in, half out as our President.â
Of course heâs not ready to listen to reason where his womanâs concerned. âYou want the gavel?â he snaps.
âFuck, no, thatâs not what Iâm trying to say. But she doesnât get what weâre aboutâat all. Sheâs too clean for our life. Iâve tried explaining shit to her, and it goes in one ear and out the other. Donât drag her into it anymore. Itâs not fair to her.â
His eyes narrow and he cocks his head to the side. âWhat exactly did you try to explain to her?â
âWe are outlaws. She acts like itâs a bedtime story that has nothing to do with you two.â
âHow many times have I told you to leave that shit to me? Iâll tell her things when I think sheâs ready to hear them.â
Which if Rock has his way will be never. âYeah, but by then sheâll be so deep in our shit, sheâll blow the MC to hell trying to escape.â
His eyes close for the briefest second and I know Iâm not the smartest fucker in the world, but it hits me in the gut what heâs doing. âRock, you think sheâs going to fall so far in love with you, sheâs going to overlook the fact that weâre up to our balls in illegal shit?â
I donât need him to answer. The guiltâs spelled out all over his face. I shake my head.
âJesus Christ.â Maybe we irritate the shit out of each other, but Rockâs a damn good person. The best. Picked my ass up off the street and gave me a home when I was a teenager. Gave me work and brought me into the MC. Saved my life more than once. I know he ainât reeling her in on purpose to be cruel. Doubt he even realized until right this second what heâs been doing.
âI love her,â he says simply.
âYeah, got that, brother.â After the misery his ex-wife put him through, he deserves to be happy. âWe need to do a better job making her understand and keepinâ her safe.â
The corners of his mouth lift. âThanks.â
I tilt my head in his direction. âYou gonna explain why your hands look like you went one round with a brick wall?â
He glances down, opens and closes his hands. âWhat do you think?â
âCoulda waited for me, brother.â
âZ had a tip they werenât gonna be around long.â
âHandled?â
âFor now.â
A different nurse comes in. Sheâs older and doesnât look like sheâll put up with any shit. âOut,â she barks at Rock. âHe needs to rest. And I need to poke him.â
âI prefer to do the poking,â I say to her with a wink.
That stops her in her tracks and she actually laughs.
âIâll be back later.â Rock gives me a fist bump and heads out, leaving me at the mercy of the nurse who seems determined to do things to me Iâm not gonna like.
âSo, I finally get to see the inside of Trinity Hurstâs room. Only took a broken leg to get here.â
That earns me a smirk from Trinity. Iâm so fuckinâ happy to be free from the hospital. Still feel like I got hit by a train, but at least Iâm free. As free as I can be with this clunky, fuckinâ cast anyway.
âHow come your room is so much nicer than our rooms upstairs?â I tease.
ââCause youâre all pigs?â I love the laugh that comes with the words. Sheâd been so silent and tense the whole way home. Said she was worried about me, but I could tell more than my gimpy condition was on her mind.
âNo twin bed?â I ask.
Her startled eyes meet mine. âI ordered a new one,â she whispers.
I look around the spacious bedroom. âYou had a twin bed? Here too?â
Her chin tilts down and she lifts her shoulders in an embarrassed shrug.
âSo, you got this for me?â I jerked my chin at the king-sized bed occupying the enti
re right corner of the room.
âWell, the club bought it for you.â She waves her hand at the bed. âItâs one of those adjustable ones, so you can elevate your leg. I want you to be comfortable.â
Fuck, I donât even know what to say to that. âThanks, angel.â
She gives me a quick nod, then turns and starts rifling through her dresser drawers. Weary from the day, I throw myself onto the bed. Watching her sends dark questions through my mind.
âWhat are you doing?â I finally ask.
âGrabbing a few things. Iâll stay in your room upstairs.â
Like hell. âWhy?â
âSo you can recover in peace.â
âTrinity, spending time with you is the only damn thing Iâve been looking forward to about this whole mess.â
âOh.â
âYeah, oh. Now get your sweet ass over here.â
She places the clothes in her hand back in the dresser and shuts the drawer.
Damn straight.
Without hesitation, she takes a few steps until sheâs standing in front of me. Taking her hand, I press my lips against her fingers.
âI meant what I said in the hospital, Trin.â
She tosses her head from side to side. âYou were high on painkillers.â
âBabe, I ainât ever been high on anything in my life that would make me say that shit if I didnât mean it.â
A quick tug and spin gets her ass perched on the thigh of my good leg.
âWhat did I say in the hospital before Rock interrupted us?â
âYou said a lot of stuff,â she hedges. Trinity canât help but make this difficult. I understand, I guess. Weâve been hurting each other for years. Besides that, I have a better understanding of just how damaged she is. That leaves things up to me, and itâs not like Iâm the poster boy for healthy relationships.
Man, weâre so fucked.
Running back over the last few days, I try to recall exactly what I said to her.
âTrinity, I started falling for you eight years agoââ
âWyatt,â she sighs, cutting me off.
âNo. No talking. Just listen.â I press my hand against her mouth to emphasize the no talking thing.
âIâm sorry about the shit I did in the past. But I want us to move forward. Together. You and me.â
She wraps her fingers around mine, and tugs my hand from her mouth. âCan I speak now?â
âOnly if youâre going to say âYes, Wyatt, I understand.ââ
One corner of her mouth tugs up. She must think Iâm kidding.
âWhat are you going to do when you get bored with me? Or youâre mad at me âcause you think I looked at one of the guys the wrong way? Or a new club girl shows up and you want toââ
âHush. In eight years, I ainât been bored of you yet.â
âYeah, but except for getting you ready for the fight, weâve barely spent any time together. Thereâs nothing interesting about me. Iâm a glorified housekeeper.â
âAre you fucking with me right now?â
âWyatt, I donât know how to be in a one-on-one relationship. Iâve never seen a healthy example of one.â
âYou think I have?â
She stops and seems to think that over.
I wrap my hand around hers. âListen, I enjoy being with you.â
Her face softens, and she brushes her fingers over my cheek. âI like being with you too.â
âGood.â I take a deep breath for the next part. âWhen Iâm with you. Really with you, I donât want to fuck anyone else.â
The hand against my cheek trembles and she puts it back in her lap. Her eyes drop down and I slip my fingers under her chin to tip her head back up.
âThe thought of you fucking any anyone else sends me into a murderous rage. Iâm actually getting rage-y thinking about it right now, Trin.â
Her mouth twitches. Mine doesnât and she realizes Iâm dead fucking serious.
She doesnât pull away. My words donât scare her. Thank fuck she knows Iâd never hurt her. No, my rage I take out on myself and other unsuspecting fighters.
âWeâve hurt each other a lot over the years, yeah?â
She nods.
âSo, how about this. While weâre trying this out,ââI have to pause because this next part is sticking in my throat like glueâ âif either of us feels like fucking someone else, we talk it out first?â
She snorts, then rolls her eyes. âHowâs that going to work? One of the girls puts her hand on your dick and offers you a blowjob and youâre going to say âhang on, honey, I need to ask Trinity if she minds?â Not fucking likely.â
Laughter rumbles out of me so hard, she bounces in my lap. âYeah, something like that. I need to learn to curb my impulsive behavior anyway. Getting too old for shit that gets me in trouble all the time.â
âWhat are you talking about? Youâre the most in-control person Iâve ever known. Itâs why youâre such a good enforcer.â
âYeah, thatâs the only place my gut instincts serve me well. Everywhere else it just fucks things up.â
âLike what?â
âLike eight years ago, when you tried to explain yourself to me and instead of listening, I stormed the fuck outta here. Or like not that long ago when I thought you were hooking up with Z and I took Cherry up to my room to get even with you.â
âOh.â
Sheâs silent as she absorbs everything Iâve laid out. Then, âYou want me to be your girl?â
âMore than anything.â
âWow.â She hesitates and shakes her head. âYou want to be my man?â
âYes.â Your only man, but I keep that to myself. I think I already made myself clear on this subject. Apparently Iâm going for broke today. I force myself to take a deep breath. âI love you so fucking much, Angel Face.â
Wary honey eyes stare back at me as her breath stutters and catches. âWyatt?â
âSay it. Donât say it. I donât care, Trinity. Itâs true and I need you to know.â
Tears run down her cheeks and I suffer some minor guilt. Iâve laid an awful lot on her, awful fast today.
Her fingers trace over my face, stopping at my chin. âI canât love you, Wrath. It hurts too much.â
Sheâs trying to distance herself by using my nick name. Okay. I get it. I can deal with it. I just hold her tighter. Iâm surprised by how little her denial bothers me. She may not recognize it or know it, but she loves me. Sheâll figure it out. Iâll spend every day showing her Iâm worth the risk.
âDoesnât matter, babe. I love you enough for both of us. Iâll prove to you we can do this. Weâre done hurting each other.â
Along with his clothes and other belongings, Wrath unpacked a lot of heavy feelings in my room today. I donât know what to make of anything he confessed.
He thinks heâs in love with me.
Shit. I donât know what love is. Hatred, sure. I have a lot of that stored up inside. Not for Wrath. Not anymore anyway. Maybe never. For myself? Definitely. Sometimes thereâs so much hatred inside I donât think thereâs room for anything more.
Iâm behind the bar in the front room of the clubhouse. Wrathâs in the middle of the room, soaking up the attention of his brothers and other friends whoâve joined the MC tonight to welcome him home. Each girl who approaches him gets a nod, but nothing more. Even through the crowd, I catch him watching me as Iâm slinging drinks.
My gaze skips to Rock whoâs pacing the room. Heâs tried to reach Hope a few times and if it wasnât for this being Wrathâs welcome home party, Iâm pretty sure heâd be banging on her front door right now. When he finally gets her on the phone, the change on his face is visible even from where Iâm standing.
Wrath nudges in and takes the phone away from Rock, shouting something at Hope. He gets a thump for his troubles, but laughs it off.
âYour boy is a pain in my ass, Trinny,â Rock grumbles as he sits down at the bar.
My boy. Did Wrath talk to
Rock already? I need to ask him not to. Iâm not ready for that. I mean, itâs stupid because the whole house probably knows by now that Wrath and I are shacking up together in my room. But I still have the cover story of it being about him recovering from his injuries. No need to go public with our ârelationshipâ yet. I canât stand the looks of pity Iâll get when we blow up.
Because letâs face it, weâre going to blow the fuck up. No matter what he said earlier, the reality is thereâs no way Wrath and I will work.
âI hear you, prez. Hasnât been in my room a minute and heâs driving me nuts.â
âI heard that,â Wrath calls from his spot halfway across the room.
âFrigginâ bat ears, I swear,â I mutter under my breath. Rock snorts. âHope coming up tonight?â
âYup. Just talked to her. Sheâs going to bring a few things up. I think youâre getting thin back there.â
âThatâs nice of her.â Iâm surprised because Rockâs developed a weird thing about Hope not doing stuff around the MC. Whether itâs for my benefit or hers Iâm not sure. It would be annoying if after all these years his olâ lady came in and took over things, so Iâm not complaining. As much as I like Hope, she doesnât strike me as the domestic type.
I keep busy running back and forth to the kitchen. Every time I look up, Wyatt has his eyes on me.
Iâm an idiot for pushing him away earlier. But I know how this works. I watched my mother do the olâ lady thing, then the whore thing. The constant heartache and worrying seemed miserable. Never expected to find myself living the same life.
Not quite the same. Iâm not saddled with a kid I never wanted and a man who taps club ass behind my back.
Because I am the club ass. How does Wrath really think this is going to work? If I give in and admit my feelings for him, Iâm the one who stands to lose the most when we break up. Not him.
Why does he think heâs in love with me? Sex? Yes. No problems there. Except when he does that weird hot and cold thing that confuses the hell out of me.
My gaze drifts to him again. Still watching me. My mouth turns up.
Weâve got a full house tonight. Couple members from the downstate charter even came up to celebrate Wrathâs return.
Obviously no one learned their lesson from the Inga incident, because I spot a few dancers from CB milling around. I recognize one grubby little gold-diggerâLexi, and I want to kick the shit out of her when she perches her perfectly tight ass in Wrathâs lap.
