Page 26 of Tattered on My Sleeve (Lost Kings MC 4)
I must black out again. Iâm aware that Iâm freezing. Something covers my chest. Hopeâs hands rub over me. Fucking girl has to be terrified, but she hasnât left my side.
Someone else presses against me.
âHoney, youâre shivering.â I recognize Rockâs voice. I try to ask him if heâs whole and find out what happened, but I canât force any words out.
âAfraid heâs going into shock. He needs an ambulance bad,â Hope says.
âA driver stopped. Heâs calling 911. Thatâs what finally chased those fuckers off.â
âHis leg, Rock. And his head.â
Someone shines a light over my face and pain stabs my eyes.
âGet that outta my face,â I mumble.
âWell, his personality is fine,â Z jokes. Z. Fuck, Iâm thankful heâs okay.
âFuck off,â I grumble. He laughs. Fucker.
Sirens. Thank fuck.
I donât have to open my eyes to know my girlâs on my other side. âYou okay?â I ask.
âYeah.â Thank God. The temperature must be dropping, âcause Iâm fuckinâ freezing.
So fucking cold.
Other than what the doctor said was a mild concussion, Iâm fine. Wrathâs in surgery and no one will tell us a thing. Iâm released, with instructions to rest. I donât get far. Rock finds me and leads me to the waiting room.
As soon as Teller spots me, he rushes over. âYou all right?â he asks, pulling me against him.
âYeah,â I mumble into his shirt. Iâm so frickinâ tired.
âFuck that scared the shit out of me,â Teller says. Whether heâs talking to Rock or me, Iâm not sure. My body sways and Teller grips me tighter.
âCome on. Letâs sit down.â
The guys sit on either side of me, while Rock and Z talk in the hallway.
âWrathâs bulletproof, Trin. Heâs gonna be okay,â Murphy says, giving my hand a squeeze.
My head bobs up and down, because I think itâs expected of me. Rock and Z seem to be finishing up whatever theyâre talking about, so I wander out to see if theyâve heard anything.
Rock holds out his arm and I donât hesitate to take shelter against him. He hugs me tight and I inhale a shaky breath. Not only had I been scared for myself, and Wrath, I donât know what Iâd do if something happened to Rock. I choke out a sob-snort noise and Rock squeezes me tighter.
âHeâs gonna be okay, Trinny. Heâs a fighter down to his marrow,â Rock says.
âI know.â
The doctor comes over to talk to Rock and he passes me off to Z who hugs me. âWhy, Z? Why would someone do that to us?â I sniffle into his shirt.
His hold on me tightens. âI donât fuckinâ know, girl.â
We are after all, in the middle of the hospital. And even though the only people around are Kings, I keep my voice low. âI get it. But they had to see Hope andââ
âFucking cowards.â He pushes me back and stares me down. âWeâre gonna handle it, Trin. Promise you that.â
I nod. Thatâs how things work in our world. Assaulting one member is an attack on the entire club. Retaliation will be swift and brutal.
âTonight scared me too, you know. Donât know what Iâd do without you. And,â he nods at Rock. âYou know those two are closer brothers to me than my actual brothers are.â He scrubs his hands over his face. âFuckinâ bullshit.â
Shit. Thatâs a lot for Z. Heâs jokes around so much, itâs easy to forget he can be serious too.
Rock returns and gives Z a meaningful look before addressing me. âBabe, I want you to go home and get some rest.â
I wonât be able to rest. What if somethingâ âI need to see him first.â
His hands settle on my shoulders. âI just spoke to your doc, he said you need rest. As soon as Wrath wakes up, Iâll have one of the guys bring you back. But right now, you need to take care of yourself or you wonât be any good to him.â
Rock knows the right words to get his way and my mouth curls into a tired smirk.
âCome on, Trin. Iâll keep my phone on. If we get word heâs up, Iâll turn right around and bring you back,â Z promises.
I nod and Rock presses a kiss to the top of my head. âGo on.â
Z wraps an arm around my shoulder. âDoc said donât let her sleep too long. She can have Tylenol, but make sure she eats something,â Rock says to Z as if Iâm not standing in between them. Iâm so out of it, I donât even care.
They can make me go home. But I wonât rest until I know Wyattâs okay.
Ow.
Everythingâs hazy. I could have sworn I won the fight, but I feel like Iâve had the shit kicked out of me.
My nose twitches. Antiseptic. Unpleasant. Trin doesnât use crap like that to clean with.
Oddly, thatâs the thought that pulls me out of my fog.
âTrinity?â
A small, pretty woman smiles down at me. âWelcome back, Mr. Ramsey.â Huh. Running my gaze over her, I determine sheâs a nurse. Iâm in a hospital bed. Definitely in a gown. What the fuck?
âWhere am I?â
âEmpire Med. Iâll go grab a doctor. And your familyâs here.â
She pats my arm, her hand lingering a little longer than professionally necessary. âMy girlfriend, Trinity. Where is she?â Her mouth turns down at the word girlfriend. I may have had the tar beaten out of me, but I know when a woman is interested. Instead of flattered, Iâm annoyed.
âBoth women that came in were treated and released,â she answers before hurrying out of the room.
Good. Now, where is she?
I take a few seconds to look myself over. Legâs in a fucking cast. Despite the risks I take, I havenât had a broken bone since my dad snapped my arm when I was eight. My headâs killing me. Reaching up, I realize they shaved my fucking head.
Before I assess any other damage, a doctor breezes in.
âYouâre awake sooner than I expected.â
âIâm special that way,â I grumble and the doctor nods.
âDo you remember what happened?â
Trinity up against a wall. Definitely remember that. âTrinity? Where is she?â
He checks his notes. âEveryone else who came in with you is fine.â
Thank God. Still, I need to know my girlâs okay. âThe blonde?â
âI didnât treat the others, but no one else was admitted.â
Okay. Thatâs good news.
âWhat else can you remember?â
My mindâs still fuzzy. Riding. Getting pushed off the road. Fuck! âWe were run off the road.â
He nods again. âThatâs what Iâve been told. There are some police officers who want to talk to you. I told them they had to wait.â
Good. Hate pigs. Maybe I should have a lawyer? âIs Hope here?â
He seems confused. âMy pres-brotherâs ol-girlfriend,â I clarify remembering at the last second to use words that will make sense to the doc.
âThere are a lot of people here for you. Iâll go find out.â
Two officers slink in after the doc leaves. Oneâs old and chubby, the other young and still has that enthusiastic look about him. Two walking clichés.
âMr. Ramsey. We need a statement from you.â
âMy doctor okay with you beinâ in here? I donât even know whatâs fuckinâ wrong with me yet.â
They share a look. âDo you remember what happened?â
I havenât talked to Rock yet. âNo.â
âWhere were you last night?â
âI donât remember.â
âLook, your blood tested clean. Weâre not looking at you for driving under the influence,â young and optimistic informs me.
Chubby gives him the side-eye. Iâm guessing his partner went off-script. I never drive impaired, so this isnât really news to me.
âIs it possible your gang was in the middle of handling business, and thatâs why you canât remember?â
âGang? What the fuck are you talking abo
ut?â
The older one rolls his eyes. âSorry. Your club.â
Out of it or not, Iâm not going to give this fuck the satisfaction of rattling me. âNo, sir. Best I can recallâwith my head injury and allâis riding with my girl and a car running us off the road.â
âOkay. Yeah. Thatâs the story the others had too,â Chubby says. He seems so disappointed.
âIf you remember anything else, call us.â The young one flips a card and I slap it on the table next to me.
The doctor returns, not at all pleased to see my visitors. âI did not give you permission to speak to my patient,â he snaps. âHe has a head injury, for Godâs sake. You canât question him.â
âYeah, sure, Doc. Weâre just leaving.â
The doc stares the duo down until they shuffle out the door. I kinda like this guy.
âI apologize. They should not have been in here.â His mouth settles into a grim line. âWhat do you remember? Or up until what point?â
Spending the day with Trinity. The fight. Sex with Trinity. My face pulls into a smile at that memory. The talk I wanted to have with Trinity. Pulling out of the gas station to meet up with the guys. Tellerâs anxious face. Crashing. Fear. Failure. Hope holding my hand and taking care of me, even though Iâve been so mean to her.
âRemember everything I did yesterday.â
Doc looks relieved to hear that.
âRemember riding and an SUV bearing down on us. Gettinâ pushed off the road. After that itâs a bit sketchy.â
âOkay. Thatâs good. Very good. I think youâre going to be fine, Mr. Ramsey. Youâre strong. In good health. But that said, youâve got a concussion and weâre going to keep you to make sure itâs not more serious than that.â
I groan and he smiles.
âI know. Now, your leg is a tibial shaft fracture. That will take some time to heal. We can discuss it more when youâve had some rest.â
âOkay. Can I see my brother? Rock? He out there?â
âYes. Iâll send him in.â He taps my arm. âYouâre lucky. Motorcycles are dangerous. Could have been much worse.â
My eyes roll and he chuckles. âI know. Iâm obligated to say it.â
He walks out and Iâm not waiting long before Rock pushes the door open. He gapes at me and Iâm about to flip him off when I spot Hope.
I hold my hand out to her and she brushes by Rock, hurrying to my side. I take note of the bandages covering her hands and my jaw clenches.
âOh my gosh! They shaved all your beautiful hair off,â she gushes, while gently running her hands over my head.
The girl actually says gosh and I almost got her killed last night. âYou okay, sweetie?â I feel like fuckinâ shit. Never shoulda let Rock talk me into bringing the girls.
âSome scrapes. Nothing. How are you?â
I snort. âI feel like I got run over.â
Rock finally steps closer to me. I imagine heâs pretty rattled. âYou kinda did, brother.â
Why is it just the two of them? âWhereâs Trin? Is she okay?â
Rock nods and runs his hand over the back of his neck. âYeah, I sent her home with one of the guys to get some rest.â
Godfuckingdammit. I donât want her taking comfort anywhere else but with me. The thought of her alone up at the clubhouse withââWhoâd you send her home with?â
Rock takes a deep breath. âEasy, brother. Sheâs on her way back now.â
Good.
I turn back to Hope and gently take her hand. âYou sure youâre okay? That was some bad shit, sweetheart. Thank you for taking care of me like you did.â
She seems embarrassed. I understand a little better why Rockâs so far gone over her, but I also donât understand how he thinks keeping her in our world is fair. âI didnât do anything useful. I froze. Trinity is the one who went all Tomb Raider on us.â
Iâm real fuckinâ happy to hear that. Glad I took Trin to the gun range the day before too. Pain stabs through my head. âFuck. How long did the doc say Iâll be down?â
Rock isnât one to fuck around when it comes to serious shit. âFour to six months.â
Jesus Christ thatâs a long time. Rock doesnât give me a chance to start my bitching. âYouâre going to follow every damn instruction. If you donât, your leg will heal all fucked up and youâll be a gimpy fuck the rest of your life. So six months is nothing to make sure youâre not walking in circles from now on.â
This is what makes Rock such a good prez. Always looking out for all us fuckups. Christ. I canât protect the club in this shape. Who do I trust enough to take over for me? Dex? Murphy? Z? Shit. âYou gotta take my patch, donât ya?â
Rock groans. âFuck, man. Why are you worried about that now? Itâs not going anywhere. Z and the others will take care of shiââ
Nope. It donât work like that. âCanât ride. You gotta take my cut, prez.â
âKnock it off.â
Rockâs eyes zero in on the way Hope has her fingers wrapped around mine and I almost laugh out loud. âWe know who it was?â I ask to distract him.
âZ has a lead on it. Weâll discuss it later.â
I want a piece of that. âWhen they gonna let me out?â
âA day or two. We gotta get you set up on the first floor somewhereââ
âHe can stay in my room,â Trinity says softly from the doorway.
Thank fucking God. Warmth burns through my chest as I take in every inch of her. My girlâs okay. Couldnât stand anything bad happening to her. I hold out my hand and she rushes over to take it.
âYouâre such a big baby. Donât you know how to drive your bike off a cliff by now?â Sheâs teasing, but I see the tension in her face. Especially the way her hand trembles when I grasp it.
Hope pats my unbroken leg and joins Rock.
He clears his throat. âWeâre gonna get going. Trin, you need a ride, call me.â
âYeah, okay,â I answer without taking my eyes off Trinity.
Her nose is a bit red, but itâs her lost little girl expression that makes me want to pick her up and carry her home. Except I canât fucking move with the cast and all this other stuff in my way.
âYou okay, angel?â
Her lip quivers, but her voice comes out strong. âYeah.â
âCome sit next to me. Let me hold you.â
She hesitates. âThat hospital bedâs barely big enough for you.â
âEh, weâve slept in smaller beds together and survived.â Her cheeks flush at the memory.
She finally climbs into the bed, carefully tucking herself against my side. Throwing her arm around me, she lets out a sigh. I brush my fingers through her hair, checking to make sure sheâs okay.
âRock said you went home. Get any rest?â
âA little.â
âZ take care of you?â The words stick in my throat, but I push âem out.
She laughs softly. âYeah. Kept waking me up.â
Donât like the sound of that. âWhy?â I ask trying to keep my voice neutral.
She tips her head up. âDoctors said I had a mild concussion. Not enough to keep me here, but said I shouldnât sleep too long unchecked.â
Oh. Well, now I feel like shit.
âIâm so sorry, angel.â
âYou think I should leave?â she whispers.
âNo fucking way. I dare anyone to say a word to me.â
She chuckles against my shoulder.
âClose your eyes.â
She shifts in my arms. âAm I hurting you?â
âNo, babe. Close your eyes.â
âOkay,â she mumbles before falling asleep.
Overly friendly nurse returns and I prepare to fight her if she tries to wake Trin up. But she smiles, checks on a few things, then leaves.
Next time I wake up, Tellerâs sitting in the chair next to me and Murphyâs pacing at the foot of the bed.
My mouthâs so dry, it takes two tries to get any words out. âHow long you guys been he
re?â
âHavenât left yet, brother. Gotta make sure youâre protected,â Murphy answers as he hands me a bottle of water from a small refrigerator in the corner.
âThanks.â
Teller jerks his chin at Trinity. âShe okay?â
âYeah.â
He shakes his head. âYou guys scared the fuck outta me. That took some skill, laying your bike down a mountain.â
I snort even though I know heâs being sincere. He shrugs. âCoulda been a lot worse, bro.â
Iâm well aware and the thought has been nagging at me, even in my sleep.
Trinity stirs and blinks up at me. âYou okay?â she asks.
First thing outta her mouth is asking if Iâm okay. Takes me a second to answer her. âYeah.â
Teller stands. âHow you feel, Trin?â
She shakes herself awake and sits up, finally noticing Murphy and Teller. âHey, guys. Yeah, Iâm fine.â She flashes a weak smile at Teller.
âNeed a ride home?â he asks. My arm tightens on Trin and the corner of her mouth twitches.
âNo. Iâm staying.â
Itâs awkward for a second or two before the guys hold their fists out. We tap knuckles and they leave.
Trinity struggles to sit up and I panic. âWhere you goinâ?â
âI need to pee.â
âOh, okay. You can do that.â
She smirks and wriggles out of the bed.
While sheâs gone, a bored-looking girl drops off a tray of what looks like warmed over shit for breakfast.
âWhat the hell is that?â I ask her.
âOatmeal. Healthy stuff,â she answers with a smirk, like she thinks I sit around drinking beer and eating Pringles all day.
âMy girlfriend cooks lots of healthy stuffâit never looks like that.â
She shrugs and leaves. I poke at the brown slop with a spoon.
Trinityâs laughing when she returns. âI caught that whole exchange, you know.â
Good. I said it loud enough.
She stretches and glances at the tray. âIt canât be that bad.â
âBy all means.â I push the tray toward her. She snags the apple and takes a chunk out of it.
I had planned to have a talk with her last night. After what happened, I canât wait another second.
âCome here, babe.â
