âWhat are you up to now?â I ask as I catch up to Heidi out in the parking lot.
âHome?â
âWant to stop for lunch somewhere?â
It makes me real happy when she answers, âOkayâ without even hesitating.
She follows me out of Empire to Hog Heaven. I know how much she loves this place. It looks like a shithole from the outside, but the chef is from some culinary school and he serves hearty gourmet food that comes from local farms and stuff. Itâs the closest decent restaurant to the clubhouse, so the guys end up here a lot.
âIs this okay?â I ask once weâre settled in a booth in the back. Alexaâs in her carrier next to Heidi, checking out her surroundings. Heidiâs stirring her coffee in an endless circle.
She glances up at me. âIt is. Thank you. I donât deserve you.â
âWhat are you talking about?â
Her spoon clatters on the table, and she puts her head in her hands. âI donât know.â
âHeidi, talk to me.â
âWhat are we doing, Blake?â she mumbles.
âWhat?â
She tips her head to the side so she can see me. âWhat are we doing?â
âHaving a late lunch?â
She doesnât laugh.
âI donât know what you want me to say. I want to take care of you.â
âWhy?â
âBecause I love you.â Iâll never get tired of saying that to her. âThatâs what people in love doâtake care of each other.â
A brief smile lights up her face before her eyes darken with worry. âWhat do you expect from me?â
âNothing. I know itâs too soon.â
âHow long are you willing to wait?â
Forever. âI love you. Take your time. Iâm not going anywhere.â
She shakes her head. âI donât deserve you.â
âWhat does that even fucking mean?â
Leaning forward, she drills me with a fierce stare. âIt means, I screwed up my entire life, and youâre going to help me put it back together? How is that fair to you?â
âHeidi.â I grab both her hands, holding her tight. âYou didnât screw anything up. None of it matters anyway. All we can do is go from here. I donât want to be without you any longer. Thatâs a fact. It wonât change.â
I expect her to move away, to put some distance between us. But she uncurls her fingers and wraps them around my hands. âI feel awful. Axel doesnât get the same chance,â she whispers. âBut it was his choice to take that job, and I feel guilty for even thinking that way.â
I donât know what to say, so I just keep holding her hands and let her talk. âFrom the second I found out I was pregnant, I kept trying to do the right thing, even though deep down I knew it was wrong in my heart.â
âLike what?â
âDonât make me say it.â
For a minute, she scared me. I thought she meant Alexa was the mistake. But she means getting married. I wonât make her say it and I wonât agree with her either. Iâll just keep holding on to her.
âNow, I plan to do whatâs best for Alexa and whatever makes me happy.â
âDo I make you happy?â
âI donât know yet.â
Her answer doesnât upset me at all. I run the back of my hand over her cheek, and she peers up at me. âFrom now on, I want complete honesty from you, Heidi.â
âI havenât lied to you.â
I cock my head to the side and she glances away. âMaybe not. But I think sometimes you hide the truth when you donât want to bother someone.â
Her eyes widen, like she never realized thatâs what she does or sheâs surprised I got her figured out. Iâm not sure. âMaybe,â she mumbles. Then she fixes her dark brown eyes on me. âYouâre also real quick to assume stuff, you know,â she accuses.
âOh, yeah? Like what?â
âLike when you showed up on my birthday and assumed Iâd hop into bed with you.â
I grin because even though that night ended up being a clusterfuck, it was still pretty fucking awesome.
âWhy are you laughing?â
âIâm not laughing at all.â I pull one of her hands up to my mouth and kiss the back. âItâs one of my favorite memories.â
She snorts and pulls her hand away. âYeah, right. Iâm sure the epic case of blue balls was very memorable.â
I burst out laughing and she glares at me. âWhat I mean is, you assumed my eighteenth birthday meant I was yours. You didnât ask me what I wanted.â
My laughter dies down. Sheâs right. âWhat did you want?â
âI donât know.â
âWhat do you want now?â
âI donât know,â she answers, a little more unsure this time.
âYou want me to back off?â
Her mouth curves into a soft smile. âNo.â
My heart stops its mad gallop at that one simple word. Especially the way Heidi doesnât have to think it over. I think she knows what she wants and sheâs afraid to admit it. And Iâm okay with that.
âBut I canât promise anything, yet,â she warns.
âTake your time, beautiful.â
Iâve been reduced to an eleven-year-old boy again. I could go downstairs almost any night of the week and have my pick of hot girls eager to please me. Instead, Iâm dick-in-hand, jerking off in the shower every morning. Frustrated doesnât begin to cover it.
When I told Heidi the next move was hers, I didnât consider that we see each other almost every day. Even when we donât see each other, I know sheâs a quick walk through the woods away.
Since our talk, weâve settled into a new normal. Grudgingly, I have to admit, some of the things she accused me of were true. I have always taken herâtaken usâfor granted. There are a lot of little things about her I donât know because Iâve always just assumed.
Iâm trying to give her space to figure out what she wants. She needs to push past her guilt, her grief, and everything else holding her back and make the decision when sheâs ready. I wonât repeat past mistakes and try to force it. I will be her friend and help her with Alexa when she needs it, though. No matter what, there will always be a connection holding us together that I canât ignore.
After finishing my solo shower, I rush to get dressed. Since Marcel moved back into the clubhouse, Heidiâs been trying to put her life back in motion. One of those things was to meet with her adviser and get back into school.
Yesterday, I promised to watch Alexa, so Heidi could go to her appointment. Hope has to be in court and Trinity is at the gym with Wrath.
First, I pop over to see Marcel.
âNeed anything, bro?â
He glares at me. âWhere you headed off to?â
âIâm gonna go grab Alexa and watch her for the afternoon, so Heidi can go to campus and meet with her adviser.â
He sighs and shakes his head. âChrist, would you stop using my niece to get into my sisterâs pants?â
His words hit me with the force of a tire iron to the chest. âWhat? How can you even say that?â
âCome on. Babysitting? All this other shit you do for herââ
âIâm trying to be her friend. Itâs Heidi. Of course Iâm gonna help her out when she needs it.â
âYeah, because you want her to jump into bed with you.â
âFuck you.â If he wasnât still so mangled from the accident, Iâd throat punch him right now. âThatâs not why. Even if it was, so what? Why does the thought of us together bug you so much?â
He sighs and looks away. âI donât fuckinâ know.â
I might as well just say it. âBecause of all the chicks we used to fuck around with toââ
âYeah. Probably.â
âIf Iâd known it was gonna cause me this much fuckinâ trouble, I never woulda done any of it.â
He turns and stares at me for a few beats before speaking. âHeidiâs probably given you a ton of grief, hasnât she? Making you work for it?â He grin
s and Iâm itching to punch him again.
âWhat do you think?â I ask in my best are you stupid? voice.
âFuck it. Iâm sorry. No one else in the world would treat her better. And Alexa. Thatâs all that matters. Any douchewit she hooks up with is gonna be in Alexaâs life, too.â
âGood. Then the douchewit should be me, because you know damn well I love them both.â
Laughter rumbles out of him, and itâs the best fuckinâ sound in the world. Tellerâs been dark since he got home. This might be as close to a blessing to date his sister as I ever get.
Date. Weâre way past dating.
âYeah. God help you.â He motions me closer and I lean over to give him a hug. âBring Alexa over?â
âI will.â
âThanks. That kidâs the only damn thing that keeps me from putting a bullet in my head.â
âSeriously? Your sister, me, the club, everyone loves you. Donât say shit like that.â
He nods and waves me out the door. I go, but weâre not done with that conversation. Not at all.
Heidi said ten a.m. but I want to spend some time with her before she rushes out the door. I show up at nine and plan to pretend I got the time wrong.
I feel like an asshole when she opens the door looking stressed and rumpled. âWhy are you here so early?â
âI thought we said nine?â
âNo. Oh. Iâm so messed up, maybe I did.â She opens the door wider. âUh, I already fed her. Sheâs napping, but sheâll be up soon.â Heidi hurries into the kitchen and opens the refrigerator. âSheâll want to eat when she gets up and probably every couple hours. Thereâs enough in here.â
âOkay. Sleeping, eating.â
âAnd pooping. Lots of pooping.â
âAwesome. Canât wait.â
She chuckles. âYou can stay here with her.â
âI promised Iâd bring her over to see your brother.â
âOh, good.â She hesitates and glances down. âShit, I need to get dressed.â
âDid you eat yet?â
âNo.â
âGo do what you need to do. Iâll make you something.â
Since Iâm here so early, we have extra time to have breakfast together. âYou keep feeding me. Are you trying to fatten me up?â she asks after I stick a plate of eggs in front of her.
âNo. Youâre perfect the way you are.â
She glances down. âIâm definitely different than I was before Alexa.â
I snort because all the changes look good to me.
âHey, after my meeting, Iâm going to swing by the hospital. Lucas sent me a text. Heâs back and up at Empire Med.â
âOkay.â
âHe wanted to see Alexa, but I donât really want to take her there right now, you know?â
âI understand.â
Should I be rattled that sheâs going off to visit some other guy? No. Am I?
Not really.
My morning with Blake was a nice surprise. Heâs been living up to his promise of being my friend and giving me time. I know how busy he is between the club and working at Furious, but he makes time to see me and Alexa every day. Nothing big. He doesnât bring flowers or make grand declarations of love. Thatâs not his style. Heâs practical. Quietly showing me every day that heâs here for me.
Like heâs always been.
My meeting went better than I expected. I have to wait until fall to re-enroll, but otherwise, Iâm all set.
Walking through campus, Iâm assaulted with a hundred different memories of Axel and me here. I can even see our old apartment building from my adviserâs office.
I didnât think this through.
How can I ever spend time here again, in a place with so many memories?
There are enough colleges in and around the Capital Region that I might have to look for somewhere else to finish my program.
At least I have a few months to think it over.
Lucas looks a hundred times better than he did when I saw him in Alaska, and itâs the first thing I say to him.
âThanks, I still feel like shit. Whereâs the kid?â
âHome. My brotherâs finally home now.â I donât mention Murphy because Iâm not sure how much Axel told Lucas about our relationship.
âWhere you living now?â
âWith my uncle and aunt. Theyâve been a big help.â
âAxelâs parents arenât helping you out?â
âFuck no. His mom was a raging bitch at the funeral.â
He looks so stricken, I almost regret my harsh honesty. âIâm sorry. He never talked about his parents much, so I figured something was off there.â
âTheyâre not the warmest people.â
We talk about a lot of stuff and itâs nice to catch up.
A nurse finally chases me out at dinnertime. I didnât realize how late it was. I send Blake a text to let him know Iâm heading home.
âHelga Dunning. My husband, Nick, is supposed to be on this floor.â
My head snaps up at the name. Not the last name, which I donât recognize. The first name. There just arenât a lot of Helgas around here.
The womanâs hair is dark like mine, but that doesnât mean anything.
âTurn around,â I mutter. As if she heard me, she does, and I suck in a hit of air. She could be my mother. She looks like an older, poorly preserved version of the image I see every morning in the mirror.
âMom?â
Naturally, she doesnât look my way. Why would she? She relinquished the title of âmomâ more than a decade ago.
âHelga Whelan?â I call out a little louder. This time she does turn.
What the fuck do I do now?
Her gaze lands on me and she tilts her head to the side. âDo I know you?â she asks walking closer.
âHeidi? Remember me? Your daughter?â
I wasnât jealous about Heidi visiting her friend.
Eight hours ago.
She texted me when she left school. Then again when she was leaving the hospital.
She spent an awful long time there
âStop being an asshole,â I grumble to myself.
Alexa chortle-giggles and waves her fists. Weâve had a pretty good day together. Sheâs a good baby. Easy to care for. She sure as hell cheered Teller right the fuck up.
Another hour later and Iâm ready to freak the fuck out that Heidi still isnât back. Itâs not jealousy this time, itâs worry.
Iâm hanging with the baby in front of the clubhouse so that Iâll be sure to see Heidi as soon as she drives up.
Instead, Z joins me. âPretty soon weâll need to get you one of those kangaroo pouches so you can just carry her around.â
âFuck off.â
He laughs like an idiot and Alexa laughs with him. âSee, she thinks youâre a moron, too,â I say.
âYouâre awfully bitchy today. Whatâs wrong?â he asks.
I give him a look to see if he really wants me to answer or if heâs still being a jerk. Heâs busy tickling Alexaâs feet, so I answer honestly. âWorried about Heidi. She should have been home a few hours ago.â
âShit. You call her?â
âYeah, but I donât want to keep blowing up her phone and distract her if sheâs driving, you know?â
Thatâs when we hear the crunch of gravel under tires coming up the driveway. âThat sounds like her.â I let out a relieved breath before the warring sensations of worry and jealousy stir up. By the time she parks and gets out, Iâm not sure how I feel.
âHey, Heidi-girl. Your man was startinâ to worry about you,â Z says, jerking a thumb in my direction.
This is the first time anyoneâs acknowledged what is pretty obvious. âAsshole,â I growl under my breath. The fucker laughs at me. Heidi didnât seem to hear him at all.
âWhatâs wrong, Heidi?â
Her gaze darts between Z and Alexa, ignoring me completely. âHey, baby,â she says, holding out her arms. I hand Alexa over and watch
her carefully for a minute.
âIâll see you two at the party later?â I shake my head and Z makes a âcall meâ gesture then says goodbye to both of us.
When she raises her gaze to mine, her eyes are wet. âHow was Lucas?â I ask, hating that I was jealous for even a second.
âBetter. He looked much better than before.â
âThat why you took so long?â Why? Why did I say that?
Her face hardens. âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âNothing.â
âYouâre jealous of my injured, bedridden friend?â
âNo.â
She leans in and kisses my cheek. âThanks for watching Alexa, Murphy. Iâll talk to you later.â
âHeidi, wait.â
âNo.â
I watch her go, hating myself for picking a fight over nothing. Weâre not actually together. But weâre as together as weâve ever been. In my head sheâs mine.
Fuck.
Iâm so tied up in knots on the way home. Mad at myself for attempting to talk to my useless mother, like some pathetic, needy child. Mad at shutting Blake down when he was probably just worried about me. Just pissed at the world in general.
After spending those awful few minutes with my mother, I needed to feel my daughter in my arms. Couldnât wait to get to her. Iâm not a bad mother. Iâm not. Nothing could ever make me abandon Alexa the way my mother abandoned me.
âAre you okay, Heidi?â Hope asks when I shut the door behind me.
âNo.â
âWhatâs wrong?â
Thatâs when I burst into tears. Alexa mimics me and screams her head off. Hope hurries over, taking Alexa and wrapping her arm around my shoulder.
âCome here. What happened? Did you have a fight with Murphy?â
âNo. Not really.â
Now that I have a chance to think about it, Iâm surprised he didnât follow me over here and demand an explanation. Maybe heâs finally had enough of my back and forth moodiness.
The thought makes me cry even harder.
Hope works hard to balance rocking Alexa so she stops crying and rubbing my back to calm me down.
âTell me what happened, honey.â
