Page 31 of More Than Miles (Lost Kings MC 6)
âAre you sure you donât have other stuff to do? Iâm fine on my own, I swear.â Itâs a lie, but I canât stand the thought of him being here with me out of pity.
âIs it really so unbelievable that I want to spend time with you?â
âNo. I just meant if youâd rather hang at the clubhouse, I wonât be offended.â
âI donât think the clubhouse is a good place for the baby.â
âI meant, you know, without me.â
âWhy would I want to be without you?â The words arenât said in an innocent, questioning way. He says it more like a challenge.
Unsure of what heâs looking for, I struggle to answer, âIâ¦I donât know.â
He slips his arms around my shoulders. âYou think too much. Always worried about the wrong things.â
âWhat should I worry about?â
âPicking out a movie for us to watch.â
The Fast and the Furious seems like a safe choice. Man candy for me, fast cars for him. He snorts when the movie starts but doesnât comment on my pick. âWhyâre you all the way over there?â
âI donât know.â
He pats the cushion next to him, and I move a little closer. âWhatâs gotten into you? You used to sit in my lap, or on my shoulders, or on my feet when we watched movies. Couldnât keep you off me.â
âYeah, when I was a kid. You donât want me hanging all over you now.â
He chuckles, but his voice is soft, almost soothing. âYou donât know jack about what I want.â
I slide over a few more inches and he wraps his arm around me, pulling me to his side. âIâm cold.â
He whips the blanket off the back of the couch and arranges it over me. âBetter?â
I murmur a yes and settle my head against his shoulder. One of his hands strokes over my hair, lulling me half to sleep.
âYou falling asleep on me?â he asks in a low voice.
âMmmhhmm.â
He shifts and my eyes pop open to find him staring at me.
âWhatâs wrong?â
One of his large hands cups my face. âNothing. I like looking at you.â His intense gaze tells me thereâs so much more to his words. Iâm lost in the tingling sensation of his palm against my skin. His forehead touches mine, and he inhales heavily. âYou know how much I love you?â
I pull in a deep breath and stare into his familiar green eyes, watching me with so much love. âI love you, too.â The words pop out with no thought on my part. Iâve loved him my entire life.
His lips smooth over mine, eliciting a gasp of surprise. He uses it to slide his tongue against mine, so soft, warm, and sweet. His hand slips into my hair, holding my head, so he can take our kiss deeper.
My head swims in confusion and excitement.
Blake keeps kissing me with all the passion of a man who knows exactly what he wants. He nips at my bottom lip, presses his tongue against mine, and groans into my mouth. His hand drops to my waist, tugging at me. The position is awkward, and I think I know what he wants. I sit up, not breaking our kiss, tossing off the blanket and throw my leg over him. His hands move to my hips, making me straddle his lap. He adjusts his position, sliding down a bit. The movement pushes what has to be a very large erection against me, and I moan. All control leaves my mind, and I rock against him.
His hands slide up my thighs, to my back and under my shirt. His warm, rough hands on my skin leave goose bumps. I rub myself against him even harder, and his kisses become more urgent. His breathing grows harsher.
Alexa screams bloody murder, yanking us out of the moment.
I groan in disappointment as I pull away. âIâm sorry.â
âItâs okay,â he answers in a hoarse voice.
âIâll be right back,â I promise.
âIâll be here.â
I groan as I watch Heidi hurry away.
My mouth still burns from her sweet kisses. Part of me still canât believe I finally had her in my arms.
The guilt I expected doesnât come. Lord knows, if Heidi didnât want to be kissed, sheâd let me know. Considering how much and for how long Iâve wanted her, Iâm surprisingly calm. I do have to sit up and adjust myself, though, then stop myself from following her into the bedroom and finishing what we started.
If I want to be with herâand who am I kidding, thereâs no if about itâI better get used to interruptions like this.
She walks down the hallway, carrying a teary-faced, pissed-off Alexa, whoâs still screaming and waving her fists. âI know, baby. I know.â Heidi shushes and coos at her daughter, while taking her into the kitchen. Since most of Hope and Rockâs downstairs is an open floor plan, I track Heidi as she goes from the refrigerator to the counter. âDo you need help?â I call out.
âNope. I got it. Iâll be right there. Do you need anything while Iâm out here?â
Yeah, âcause she needs to be fetching shit for me while sheâs taking care of her baby. âIâm fine.â
Alexaâs eager to be fed when Heidi returns to the living room and finally calms down when the bottle touches her lips.
âSomeone was hungry,â I say, watching the two of them.
âI know. I probably should have woken her up to eat before, but she looked so peaceful,â she whispers. Her eyes never leave Alexaâs face while she feeds her. And my eyes never leave Heidi.
âYou can put the movie back on,â Heidi suggests.
âNah, Iâm fine.â The two of them seem to light up my whole world, and I donât want to look away.
Heidi pops the bottle out of Alexaâs mouth and shifts her so she can pat her back.
âSo, anyone can feed her now?â I ask.
She raises an eyebrow. âWhat do you mean?â
âThe bottle?â I wave my hand in the air, because I really donât know what Iâm asking.
Pink spreads over her cheeks. âYes, itâs formula.â
She goes back to feeding the baby, and when theyâre finished, Heidi hesitates. âDo you want me to take her?â I ask.
âDo you mind? I want to toss this in the dishwasher and change my shirt.â
âYeah, hand her over.â
Alexa squeals and claps her little hands on either side of my face. âGot a full belly now, baby?â I ask and she makes the funniest shriek-giggling noises in response, so I ask her more questions.
âShe likes when you talk to her,â Heidi says quietly as she sits back down next to us.
âYou always did, too. Iâd come over after school and tell you all about my day. Best part was you couldnât share my secrets with anyone.â I said it as a joke, but Heidi doesnât laugh.
âWhatâs wrong?â I ask, settling Alexa against my chest. She coos in my ear and drools on my neck. Heidi apologizes and hands me a cloth.
âI can take her now if you want,â she says after I adjust Alexa in my arms.
âIâm fine. Whatâs wrong? You seem upset.â
âWe almostâ¦was that okay?â
âIt was better than okay.â I watch Heidi for a few seconds, taking in her pink cheeks, dark brown eyes, and the way she canât keep her hands still. Reaching over, I cover her hands with mine. âThereâs absolutely nothing to be sorry about. I meant what I said.â
She stares at me as if trying to remember my words, so I help her out. âI love you.â
âHow?â
âI never stopped.â
âEven when I wasâ¦When I was soâ¦far away?â
Iâd do anything to ease the pain shimmering in her eyes. Will my words will help or make it worse? âEven then. Itâs going to take more than a few miles between us for me to stop loving you.â
âMurphy.â She sighs.
âDonât do that.â
âDo what?â
âDonât distance yourself by using my road name. Not now.â
Her eyes widen as if it never occurred to her thatâs what she was doing. âIâm sorry.â
I hold my free arm up for her to curl under and she does.
I flip the television back on low, and after a while, I realize sheâs fallen asleep.
In my arms I have everything Iâve ever wanted and a feeling of peace settles over me. If this is the reward, I can wait as long as she needs me to.
My thumb rubs over her cheek. âWeâll finish that kiss later.â
Sometime after the movie ends, the door opens and Hope breezes into the house. âOh,â she whispers loudly. âI didnât realize you were here, Murphy.â Rock follows, stripping off her coat and hanging it in the closet.
âEverything okay?â she asks, approaching us with a smile on her face.
I wiggle the arm holding Alexa. âMy arm might have fallen asleep.â
She smiles when she sees Heidiâs face pressed against my leg. âLong day?â
I run my hand over her hair, brushing it off her cheek. âYeah, we spent time with Marcel.â
Rock joins us and gently lifts Alexa from me. âIâll stick her in her crib.â
âWhere you two been?â I ask Hope.
âRock picked me up from my office and took me out.â
âHeidi made dinner. Itâs in the fridge for you guys.â
Hope nods but doesnât move. âSheâs getting antsy about doing more stuff around here.â
âYou guys still okay with her being here?â
Hope frowns at me. I donât think she appreciated the question. âOf course we are. She can stay here as long as she wants. When sheâs ready to go back to school, weâll work something out for Alexa.â
âThanks.â
She sits back in her chair, lacing her fingers over her stomach. âWhat are your plans?â
âWhat do you think?â
The corners of her mouth curl into a smile.
âUnless you think itâs too soon?â I know when Hopeâs first husband passed away, Rock forced himself to wait a respectable amount of time before pursuing her, so Iâm genuinely curious about her opinion.
âItâs really up to her,â she says.
Rock joins us, moving Hope and sitting back down, pulling her into his lap. âAnyway,â she says, tapping Rockâs arm. âYou two have known each other your whole lives, soââ
âChrist, I donât want to be her option B because sheâs comfortable and being with me is the easy thing to do.â Actually, as I say it, I realize, I donât care.
âMurphy,â Hope says and I sense the hurt in her voice immediately. âThatâs not what I meant at all. And I donât think she would ever feel that way about you. I meant, no one would question it if you got together now or a few months from now or whatever.â
I jerk my chin at Rock. âYouâre awfully quiet, prez.â
âYou want relationship advice from me? Follow her lead.â
âI feel like if I wasnât here, your advice would be different,â Hope teases.
He snakes his arms around her tighter, kissing her cheek. âYeah? Sometimes a man has to do what a man has to do when heâs got a stubborn woman. That what you meant?â
She snort-giggles and Heidi stirs.
âStop, youâre going to wake her up,â Hope scolds Rock, who ignores her protests and kisses her neck.
âIâm awake,â Heidi mumbles.
I raise an eyebrow at Hope. How much of our conversation did Heidi overhear?
She sits up slow and blinks a few times. Her gaze settles on me and she smiles, like sheâs happy to find me still here.
âHey,â she says.
âHow was your brother when you saw him?â Rock asks.
Heidi gives him the details and after we talk some more, Hope and Rock go upstairs, leaving us alone on the couch together.
I want nothing more than to finish our kiss, but I think right now, itâs better to give her some space. âWalk me out?â I ask, standing and holding my hand out to her.
âIâm sorry I fell asleep on you,â she says as she follows me to the front door.
âItâs okay.â
âBlake?â
I turn and face her.
âDid you mean it?â
I donât need to ask. âYeah, beautiful. I meant it. Your little fingerprints have been all over my heart since the day we met.â
Her jaw drops.
I lean over and give her a kiss on the forehead. âItâs late. Get some rest. Iâll see you tomorrow.â
I have all night to think over the bit of conversation I overheard. Blake thinks heâs second best? That Iâd settle for him? When heâs the best person in my life and I donât deserve him?
It hurts.
It hurts that Iâve hurt him.
The truth is ugly. The truth is that I never stopped loving him. If Iâm going to be brutally honest with myself, Axel and I probably wouldnât have made it together another year. The few sweet moments we had here and there donât change the fact that I made a mistake marrying Axel when he clearly wasnât happy about being a father.
I didnât know him as well as I thought I did. We didnât have as much in common as I always assumed we did.
Those are my truths. And they hurt. Theyâre unfair because Axelâs not here to dispute any of them.
None of that stops me from feeling guilty about kissing Blake last night.
No, not guilty about kissing him. Guilty about how much I liked kissing him. Overhearing the advice Hope gave him relieved a tiny portion of the guilt.
Confused and anxious, I wake early and dress Alexa to go visit my brother.
I find Hope awake in the kitchen. Sheâs really the only person I can talk to about all of this stuff. She lost her first husband young, too, so I know she understands.
âItâs not quite the same, honey. I didnât have such a close-knit family or a daughter to pull me out of my grief,â she says when I attempt to explain my conflicted feelings.
She also wasnât considering leaving her husband when he died. Thatâs the main reason I feel so guilty.
âGettinâ ready to see that brother of yours, Heidi-girl?â Rock asks, joining us.
âYup.â
âIâll be down later this afternoon.â
âThank you, Rock. Thanks for everything you do for him. And for me.â I get the words out without being all weepy.
Rock seems flustered by the thanks and Hope pats his arm. âWe love you, Heidi,â she says.
I attempt a smile and a joke. âEven though Iâve always been a brat, Uncle Rock?â
His mouth pulls into a half-smirk. âYeah, Heidi-girl. You were always a loveable little snot.â
Warmth fills my chest. While life may have handed me a shitty set of parents, Iâve been blessed with a wonderful brother and club family.
That warmth lessens as I hurry over to the clubhouse and buckle Alexa into her car seat. Guilt follows me as I sneak my car down the driveway. I canât help it, though. I need time alone to think on the drive to Sunnyview.
âWhereâs Murphy?â my brother asks when I enter his room.
âHome, I guess. I canât keep bugging him.â
âI doubt you bug him.â He holds his hands out for Alexa. âHi, baby,â he sing-songs to her. Itâs funny to see my gloomy brother so head over heels for his niece.
Wrath and Trinity show up next. âYouâre here early,â Wrath comments.
âCouldnât sleep.â
While weâre hanging out, one of my brotherâs doctors and the occupational therapist stop by. Thereâs still a number of things my brother needs help with, but since heâs been progressing well, theyâre ready to let him go home by the end of the week. âIf there are no stairs.â
Marcel starts shaking his head before the woman even finishes. âNope. My roomâs on the second floor.â
Wrath and Trinity share a look. âYou can have our room. Weâll move back into Wyattâs old room until the house is finished,â Trinity says. Wrath squeezes her hand, and I wonder if they discussed this ahead of time.
âNah, itâs too isolated down there,â Marcel says.
The doctor seems annoyed my brother isnâ
t more thrilled about going home. âWell, thereâs always a Stairlift, but theyâre expensiveââ
âDoesnât matter what the cost is, we just want him home if he can be home,â Wrath says. My brother shoots a glare Wrathâs way but doesnât contradict him.
Violet takes Marcel down to the physical therapy room while the three of us hang back.
âI wish Rock would get his ass down here. Heâs good at choking some sense into your hard-headed brother,â Wrath grumbles.
âI think you did okay,â I tease. âHe just doesnât want to look weak in front of everyone.â
âItâs a miracle the fuckerâs alive after that accident. Weak isnât how Iâd describe him. Pain in the assââ
Trinity smacks Wrathâs arm.
âWhat?â
Blake shows up while weâre waiting for my brother to come back. He nods at Wrath and Trinity, then lifts his chin at me. âWhyâd you come by yourself?â
My shoulders lift and my gaze darts to Wrath and Trinity, who are pretending not to listen to our conversation. âI was up early.â
âSo?â
I shrug again.
âLetâs go check on welterweight,â Wrath says, yanking Trinity up and out of the room.
âThey think Marcel can come home at the end of the week. But heâs being difficult.â
âWhatâs new?â He takes a seat and pulls it around, so he can face me when he sits. âWhatâs going on?â
âNothing.â
His fingers gently grip my chin and turn me to meet his gaze. âAre you upset about last night?â
âNo.â Lie. âNot exactly.â
âWhat does that mean?â
âI donât know how much I can give you right now, Blake.â
âIâm not going anywhere.â
âCome on.â
âHeidi, Iâm done. Iâm done with any other girl but you. I know youâve been through hell, so Iâm not expecting anything. Iâm leaving it up to you. When youâre ready, weâll be together.â
A sigh of relief leaves me. âWhat if Iââ
âYouâre here!â Marcel shouts from the doorway. âDoc says I can go home at the end of the week.â
Murphyâs eyes close briefly, then he plasters a smile on and turns to face my brother. âThatâs awesome, brother. Canât wait.â
