Page 12 of More Than Miles (Lost Kings MC 6)
Asking which âherâ heâs referring to isnât necessary. âNo.â
âFuck. Me, either.â
I finally stop my search and motion him outside. âWhereâs she staying?â
âMust be with him. All her shitâs gone from the apartment.â
Guilt because of the rift I caused between Marcel and Heidi settles in my gut. âStop by his place?â
âNot yet. Iâm afraid Iâll kill him.â
âDid you talk to Hope? Bet you Heidiâs spoken to her.â
His mouth twists down. âNo.â
âWhatâs your deal with Hope, anyway? You said some dickish things about her during that fiasco.â
âI shouldnât have said what I did. I was just so pissed.â My best friend shrugs and turns toward the woods. âI donât know. Been a lot of changes since she got here.â
Maybe a joke will pull him out of his funk. âWhatâs the matter? You mad âcause Trinity caught monogamy from Hope?â
He glares at me. Guess itâs too soon to rib him about Trinity.
âThat was obviously never gonna happen,â he says.
âNo shit.â
Teller keeps pining away over Trinity like this, Wrathâs gonna straight up murder him one of these days, so I return to our first topic. âRockâs happier than heâs ever been. Hopeâs good to everyone. What else you want?â
âChrist, keep it up, Iâll think youâre in love with her.â
Now itâs my turn to look away. âYou know who Iâm in love with.â
âDonât go there, bro.â
âSheâs been like a mother to Heidi.â
At the word mother he turns and glares at me. âYeah. And I donât want Heidi getting hurt when Hope decides sheâs had enough and takes off.â
Whoa. Weâve been closer than brothers for years. Have seen and done everything together. Thereâs nothing we donât know about each other. But itâs not like we sit around discussinâ our mommy abandonment issues. All that shitâs in the past. At least for me it is. âBro,â I say gently so he doesnât take my head off. âSheâs not Heidiâs mother. If she didnât leave when Rock was in jail, sheâs not going anywhere. Besides, even when she and Rock were apart, she didnât abandon Heidi. Took her shopping and all that other shit.â
His fists open and close. âYeah, I know.â
I love him like a brother, but Teller can be a dick. Heâs also loyal to his core and protective of people he cares about. So I know he probably already feels like shit for disrespecting Rock, and figure I should drop it.
Weâre interrupted by Z riding in. Heâd taken off right after the Axel clusterfuck and no one had seen him since. He parks his bike in the garage and joins us.
âWhere you been, fucker?â Teller asks Z.
Zâs mouth slides into a smirk. âHere and there.â
We each get a brotherly hand-grab and hearty backslap.
âYou need me to look at the olâ gray ghost?â I ask, nodding at the garage.
âNah, Iâll take care of it later. Whatâre you two doing out here?â
I donât get to answer, because Hope jogs into the parking area from the woods. Sheâs dressed to work out and smiles brightly when she sees us.
âWhatâre you doing here, First Lady?â I call out. Iâm dying to talk to her. But I want to do it alone. Not in front of Teller and certainly not in front of Z, who canât be serious for five seconds.
âOh, geez. Youâre all here.â She reaches up and gives Z a quick hug. âWhereâve you been?â
âAround.â
Teller nods at her. âWhatâs up?â
âWeâre going to use the yoga room for actual yoga,â she teases. We turned the roomâa room the hippie cult who owned our compound before us used for a yoga studioâinto a champagne room, complete with shiny stripper poles and all. More often than not, it ends up being an orgy room. Itâs on the tip of my tongue to tell her to wipe down any surface she plans to touch first, but Z interrupts.
âWhoâs we?â
âSwan, Trinity, and me. Swanâs finishing her hours to become a certified instructor, and Trinity and I volunteered for the free classes. Win-win.â
None of us know what to say to that. Iâm pretty sure all three of us know Swanâintimately. But I doubt one of us knows fuck-all about what she does when she leaves the MC.
Hope shakes her head, as if sheâs thinking the same thing I am and finds it pathetic. For the first time in my life, I kind of agree with her.
I keep that to myself.
âIâm still allowed to visit, right?â she asks.
âI think you just miss us,â I tease, and she grins.
âMaybe a little. And I miss the gym.â
âSurprised prez hasnât put a gym in your basement,â Teller says.
For some reason, Hopeâs cheeks turn a little pinker, but she doesnât have a chance to respond.
âNah, they put a sex room in the basement. No room for a gym.â Z chuckles and takes two steps back from Hope, who blushes even redder.
âWho told you that?â she demands.
âWho do you think installed the keypad?â
She crosses her arms over her chest. âYou donât have to blab about it.â
âEw, itâs true? Fuck, I donât need to know what Mom and Dad are doing in their basement.â I rumble with laughter and next to me, Teller does as well.
Hope turns her glare on me. âI am not old enough to be your mother.â
âThank fuck, otherwise his crush on you would be extra weird,â Teller mutters loud enough for everyone to hear.
âFuck you, asshole.â My fist lands solidly in his bicep and he falls over, laughing. At least heâs not being a moody prick anymore.
âAll righty then. This has beenâ¦fun.â Hope draws the word out, letting us know itâs been anything but. âNow, I have a date with two hot chicks.â
Z watches her walk away in a manner that would get his ass kicked if Rock were here to witness it. I lash my foot out, kicking him in the calf. âWhat the fuckâs wrong with you?â
His head snaps back my way. âWhat?â
âWhy you picking on her? Rockâs gonna kill you.â
His shoulders lift and he grins like an idiot. âNah, she knows Iâm only messinâ with her.â
Teller leans over and fake-whispers. âHeâs being a passive-aggressive fuckwad, because heâs pissed Lilly wonât return any of his calls.â
âOhhh.â I exaggerate the word, nodding like a goof. âThat makes more sense.â
âFuck both of you,â Z grumbles.
âDude, she was way too classy for you.â I get a smack upside the head for that one, but it was totally worth it.
The front door bangs shut, and before Z knows what hit him, Wrath charges, lifting Z off the ground in a bear-hug style hold.
âJesus Christ, youâre gonna fucking kill me,â Z wheezes when Wrath sets him down. âI think you cracked a rib.â
âStop being a little bitch. Where you been?â
âHi, Z!â Trinity calls out. She joins us, giving Z a quick hug then tucks herself against Wrathâs side.
âWhereâve you been?â she asks Z.
âWhat the fuck. Whyâs everyone tryinâ to keep tabs on me?â
Wrath reaches over and punches Zâs arm. âQuit your bitchinâ. Iâm pissed âcause my girl had to take care of your dogs while you were off chasing wind.â
âI donât mind,â Trinity protests.
âI mind. She lets them sleep in the bed.â
Zâs face breaks into a grin. âJust set them on the floor if you want toâ¦â He does a few hip thrusts, making Trinity laugh and Wrath look like heâs gonna punch Z again. âYou know.â
Next to me, Teller stiffens, and I notice heâs taken an interest in his shoes all of a sudden. I give him a subtle elbow to the ribs, and he picks his head up. âHave Mariella watch the dogs.â
âShe did,â Trinity says. âReally, it was fine, Z. Theyâre the club??
?s dogs. Itâs no big deal.â
I lift my chin at the clubhouse. âYour yoga buddyâs looking for you.â
Trinity chuckles. âYeah, I saw her. Came out to say hi to Z.â She and Z wave and make goofy faces at each other for a few seconds before she wraps her arms around Wrath and lifts up on her tiptoes to give him a kiss. Itâs awkward for a minute, but then he lets her go and itâs just the four of us. Wrath eyes each of us. âWhat?â
âWhy you lettinâ them fuck with our champagne room?â Z asks. Heâs laughing, though, so I doubt he gives a fuck.
Wrath shrugs. âWere you planning to use it this morning? No. So leave âem alone.â
Z throws his hands up. âSettle down, fucker. Iâm just kidding.â
Wrath lifts his chin at me. âReady to head to Furious?â
âYup.â I slap Tellerâs back and get a punch from Z before we take off.
I canât avoid my brother forever.
Especially not on his birthday. Every day since I left, Iâve regretted moving my stuff out without talking to him. Ignoring his phone calls. Punishing him for something that probably isnât even his fault. All of it.
Besides feeling bereft without my big brother around, Iâm scared to tell him why Iâm such a mess. Why Iâve reverted back to acting like a brat. Why Iâm so damn terrified.
Yes, Iâm hurt Axel left the club. And while at first I suspected my brother and Murphy had something to do with it, I realized the reason doesnât matter. Marcel and I have never gone this long without talking, and I feel like a part of me is missing.
The only thing thatâs been keeping me together is my schoolwork. There has to be at least one area of my life I donât fuck up.
Iâve aced all of my exams so far this year, so at least I have some good news to tell my brother. You know, right before I tell him Axel and I are getting married. Heâs going to question me. Heâll assume Iâm knocked up. I canât tell him that yet, though. Axel and I are the only ones who know.
I think Axelâs still hoping Iâll change my mind.
âCan we do something fun this weekend?â Axel asks when he gets home.
âI wanted to go up to the clubhouse. Itâs my brotherâs birthday.â
Axel stares at me for several seconds without speaking. âYeah, okay.â
I let out a relieved breath. Iâd been prepared for another argument. âThanks.â
He nods.
âIâm just so stressed out and tired and I miss my brother.â
âMaybe weâll get lucky and the stress will cause a miscarriage,â Axel jokes. He might as well have punched me in the stomach with his words.
A couple seconds of intense silence pass. âHow can you say that?â
âIâm just kidding.â
âThatâs not funny.â
He lifts his shoulders and walks into the kitchen.
âI want to tell him about our engagement.â
âOkay,â he yells back.
âBut not the baby.â
He pokes his head around the corner. âGood call.â
âI was thinking of asking Trinity to help me put together the wedding. Maybe at the clubhouse since itâs too cold now to do it outside.â
âWhoa. I thought weâd have the wedding at my parentsâ country club.â
âWhat exactly about me says âcountry club weddingâ?â I tease, but deep down Iâm annoyed he even suggested it. âBesides, itâs not open now.â
âNo. I thought weâd do it in June. After I graduate.â
In my head, Iâm counting to ten so I donât strangle him. âAxel, Iâll be huge by then. No frickinâ way.â
âOh, shit. Yeah. I didnât think of that.â
Big surprise. Heâs still pretending the baby will magically disappear. And donât think Iâve forgotten that miscarriage comment.
Iâm way too hurt to examine those words right now.
Every Mile a Memory
Five Years Earlierâ¦
I barely stopped my bike in front of the house before Heidi came flying down the sidewalk. The sight of her left me struck dumb, mute, paralyzed. I was also pretty sure my jaw was hanging and drool dripped from my chin.
What the fuck?
The club had been keeping me busy for the last few months. A lot of long rides with Wrath, shoring up different business interests. Heidi and I kept in touch. Marcel got her a cellphone for her twelfth birthday and I either talked or exchanged texts with her every day. Even if it was just a word or two. I would send her postcards from each interesting place Iâd visit, too.
Except for the occasional selfie sheâd send my way, I hadnât seen her in months. Sheâd done a lot of growing up in those months.
Fuck me.
I didnât even have a chance to greet her properly. She grabbed my shoulder and threw herself on the bike.
âHappy Birthday, Bug.â
âThanks,â she answered breathlessly.
âHelmet?â
âGot it.â
Marcel was out on club business, so I offered to come see Heidi during the day. Heâd stop by later that night. At least that way, we knew she wouldnât be alone on her birthday. It was doubtful her grandmother even acknowledged the day.
She wrapped her arms tight around me and squeezed me with her legs. âPlease go.â
The distress in her voice had me rethinking our ride. Maybe I needed to have a chat with her grandmother instead.
But she squeezed me tighter and I took off.
We ended up at Friendlyâs. Somehow we always came here first on her birthday. She hopped off and waited patiently for me. When I finally turned and faced her, she jumped into my arms, giving me a big hug. âIâve missed you,â she said against my neck.
âMissed you, too, baby girl. Everything okay?â
I swear she sniffled as she pulled back, but she nodded and let me lead her inside.
Once weâd placed our orders, I grabbed Heidiâs hand. âWhatâs wrong? You seem upset.â
âGrams said she wasnât going to let me out of the house.â
âWhy?â
âI donât know. Sheâs pissed at Marcel.â
âGreat. She gonna call the cops on me?â
Her mouth tipped down and her eyes widened, as if that thought had never occurred to her.
âShit, Blake. I donât want you to get in trouble because of me.â
âI ainât worried about it. Besides, if anyoneâs worth gettinâ in trouble for, itâs you.â
That seemed to make her a little happier and a quick smile brightened her face.
I stared at her probably longer than necessary. Cataloging all the changes that had taken place. âAre you wearing makeup?â
Her startled eyes met mine and she ran her hand over her lips. âYeah, why?â
âNothing. Not used to it.â
She pulled out a little mirror and checked her reflection, brushing a few stray strands of hair back into place. âPenny gave me an eyeshadow palette for my birthday.â
It was fucking weird. Since when did Heidi care about any of that stuff?
âAre you planning to meet boys while weâre out?â I teased.
Startled, she dropped the mirror on the table and it spun around a few times before she slapped her hand over it. âNo. Why would you ask something like that?â
âI donât know. You seem different.â Older, curvier, prettier. All sorts of things I shouldnât have been noticing about my best friendâs thirteen-year-old sister.
âMaybe youâre the one whoâs different.â
Thereâs my smart-mouthed little bug. âMaybe.â
âTell me about all the places youâve been.â
âDidnât you get my postcards?â
âYeah, but itâs not the same as hearing it.â
So, for the next half hour, I gave her the clean versions of all my travel stories. She watched me, fascinated. Every now and then she stopped me to ask questions. Smart questions, like if the ride was better going
east to west because the country âopens upâ as you headed west and left the congestion and over-populated places behind. Things you wouldnât have expected a thirteen-year-old girl to know or think about. Other times she asked if Iâd taken a picture of something or someplace Iâd described. With Heidi, I felt free to share little details that I wouldnât have with anyone else. Like how pictures came out better at dawn or dusk, so I tried to be someplace interesting at those times to catch a good shot for her whenever possible.
She sighed. âIâve always wanted to see the Bitterroot Mountain range.â
âYou will one day.â
She glanced down at her plate and pushed her food around. âBut it would be more fun with you.â
âSo, Iâll take you when youâre older.â
âYou mean it?â
âOf course.â
One hand rested on her chin and she absently tapped her finger against her lips. Plush, pouty pink lips that made me wonder how theyâd feel against mine.
âBut, youâve already gone so many places. Iâd want to discover something new with you.â
It took my brain a second to catch up to her words. âOkay.â
More tapping. That finger against her lips drove me half-crazy. âHave you ever read about the Pan-American Highway?â she finally asked.
âYeah, thatâs a hell of a long road trip. Lots of rough roads.â
She flashed a grin at me. âDonât you always say the hardest roads take you to the most beautiful places?â
I couldnât help but smile back. I loved the way she remembered stuff like that. âItâs true.â
âWe donât have to do the whole thing. But some of it would be cool.â
âOkay. Is that what you want to do for your first trip?â
She drummed her fingers against the table while she thought about it. âWhat about the Blue Mountain Scenic Byway?â
âOregon? You donât have something a little more local in mind? Shelburne Falls?â
Disappointment pushed her lips into a pout, but she nodded. âSure. Anywhereâs better than here.â
âHeidi, is everything okay?â
I donât think she realized it, but she shook her head no at the same time she said, âyes.â
âThat doesnât sound very convincing.â
