âThanks. Thatâsâ¦that would be a huge help.â The school helps us with placements, but thereâs a ton of competition for coveted spots. Any extra edge I can get is great.
He returns to his chair and passes an envelope to me. âI want you to take this.â
The envelope is thick, and when I peek inside, thereâs a lot of crisp hundred-dollar bills padding it. âPrezââ
âJust Rock now.â
âRock, I canât take your money.â
âYes, you can. And you will. You said youâre planning to get an apartment near campus with Heidi?â
I nod, because yes, Heidi and I have talked about it a couple times.
âFind a nice place near campus for Heidi and use that for living expenses.â
âIââ
âNeed to concentrate on your schoolwork.â
The intention behind his word is clear. This matter is closed as far as Rockâs concerned. I slip the money into my pocket and stand. âThank you.â
He holds out his hand, but instead of a shake, he pulls me in for a quick hug and backslap. âYouâre a good kid. Iâm sorry it didnât work out.â
My throat tightens and I have a brief moment of regret. Am I making a mistake turning my back on this family whoâs, at times, treated me better than my own family?
Iâm conflicted all the way out the door. But I donât think thereâs any way to take my words back.
Once youâre out, youâre out.
âWhatâs going on, Blake?â Heidiâs voice pulls me away from staring at the war room door. I did a shit thing in there, but I donât feel as bad about it as I should.
Marcel glares at me. Despite the assurances he just gave prez, I donât think weâre cool yet.
He turns his glare on Heidi next, and I swear to fuck if he says something to her, or makes her feel bad, I will punch him in his goddamn throat.
âYou here for Axel?â he asks his sister.
She squints at him, her gaze darting between Marcel and me. âYes.â
âHe should be out in a minute,â Marcel says.
âWhatâs going on? Why is Axel still in there?â
âNot your concern, lilâ sis. You know that,â he snaps before walking out the door.
Heidi said she was here to talk to Axel. Not me. Fuck, that burns. We stare at each other for a few minutes without speaking. Sheâs pale and shaky.
âAre you okay?â I ask.
Her lips tremble. âIâd be better if you would tell me whatâs happening.â
âYou know I canât.â
She blows out an exasperated breath.
âI have some stuff to work on in the garage. Want to hang out there while you wait?â
She turns toward the war room door. Hesitates. Takes a step toward me. âIâ¦I better wait here. I need to talk to him about something.â
âAnything I can help with?â
She tucks her bottom lip in, biting down briefly before shaking her head. âI donât think so.â
I hate leaving her, but I also donât want to get swept up into any more drama that involves Axel today. Iâve had about all I can take of that kid, and if he smirks at me one more time, Iâll end up planting my fist in his face.
Iâm in the garage maybe ten minutes before I hear her.
âBlake!â
Turning, I find her silhouetted in the doorway, tears on her cheeks. âIt was you, wasnât it? You did this? Didnât vote him in? Why?â
âNot your business, Heidi.â
Outside, the distinctive rumble of Axelâs bike kicks up and Heidiâs tears flow even faster. âYouâre ruining everything. Why? Why are you doing this to us?â
The way she says us sends anger through my veins, burning me alive from the inside. They shouldnât even be together. âDammit, Heidi! You know club business isnât your business. Drop it.â
Her fists ball up at her sides, and her face screws into that expression she makes right before she explodes. âI hate you! I hate you for doing this just to get even with me.â
Yup. Sounds about right. âThe world doesnât revolve around you, Heidi.â
âWhy canât you just let me be happy?â
Axel revs his engine, his cue to Heidi that itâs time to go, Iâm sure.
My headâs throbbing. Iâm so fucking pissed right now. âThe club isnât here to make Heidi happy,â I shout.
âWhy are you trying to force me to choose?â A loud hiccupping-sob noise tears out of her throat.
Shaking my head, I take a few steps closer to her. âChoose what? Between him and the club? Youâre not a fucking member. Youâre the sister of a member, so why do you think anyone gives a shit what you want?â
Her lip trembles again and I hate myself for being so harsh with her. I havenât been able to stop thinking about all the shit Axel said at the table, though.
âDonât try to tell me this has nothing to do with me.â A few tears tumble down her cheeks. Pain twists inside my chest. I canât stand when Heidiâs upset. Canât stand being the one who upset her.
âIt doesnât,â I insist.
âDonât lie to meâ¦on top of everything else, Blake.â
I pin her with a stare. âWhoâs the liar here, Heidi? Because I seem to remember you planning a spring break trip with me not that long ago, but now I hear you two are moving in together? Are you fucking kidding me?â
Her mouth opens, she shakes her head. âYou donât understand.â
âMake me understand!â I yell loud enough that probably everyone in the clubhouse heard.
She flinches, then spins around and runs out of sight. A few minutes later, I hear Axelâs bike leaving the property.
A string of curses bursts out of me, and I send every tool in front of me flying to the floor. Now that I know sheâs gone, I stalk back into the clubhouse.
Rockâs still in the war room, shuffling through some papers when I poke my head in.
I take a few deep breaths to calm down before asking, âCan I talk to you, prez?â
He nods and motions for me to come in. âWhatâs on your mind, brother?â
âWhyâd you decide to vote on him today?â
He gives me a lazy shrug. âWhy prolong the inevitable?â
âIââ
âEvery one of your brothers has your back. Whether youâre right or wrong.â
I know thatâs how the club works. How the brotherhood works. Your brotherâs in trouble, you fight right next to him, protect him with your last breath, even if heâs the one who got himself into trouble. Thatâs why itâs so important for it to be unanimous when we vote a member in.
Dragging my hand through my hair, I think about how to ask my next question. âHow can I fix this?â
He tilts his head, considering my question. âI donât think thereâs anything to fix.â
âYou understand why I voted no.â
âDoesnât matter why. It was never gonna work. Ultimately, you did the club a favor.â
Now, Iâm not so sure, and I guess the look on my face says that.
âHe would never fully trust you, and you were never gonna fully trust him. Doubt like that can rip a club apart,â Rock insists.
âYeah, but everyone else was ready to patch him in. Iâm the one who cocked it up.â
âYou donât know that for sure. Besides, I offered to get him into Swayâs club.â
âYou did?â
Rock shoots me a glare, and yeah, I should know better than to interrupt him. âHe said no. He made the choice to leave. His heart wasnât with the club.â His face loses a little of its hard edge. âI understand how you feel about Heidi. Think what that would have been like for you.â He glances at the open war room door. âI like to think we eventually learn from our mistakes.â
I think heâs referring to Wrath and Trinity, and it makes me feel even shittier.
Rock shakes his head. âItâs not the same thing. I shouldnât have said that.â
âWould you c
hoose the club over Hope?â
I wish I would learn to think before shit comes tumbling out of my mouth sometimes.
Luckily, Rockâs not offended by the question. âNo. But sheâd never ask me to do that.â
âWhat do I do now?â
He sighs and stares out the window for a second. âWalk away. She made her choice, too, I guess. You keep pushing, youâll push her away permanently.â
Thatâs not exactly what I wanted to hear, even though I know heâs right.
âHow did you do it when Hope was married? Howâd you walk away?â
This question does seem to piss him off, but I canât help asking.
âI wanted what was best for her. I thought she was happy. Thatâs what mattered.â
âHow could you stand it?â
âI hated every second, but I didnât have a choice.â
Ultimately, things worked out for them. A blessing for the club. I canât picture Rock without Hope anymore. Even if sheâs not a âmember,â sheâs just as vital as anyone else.
I donât think my story will have the same happy ending. âI need to get out of here for a while.â
Regret and understanding play over Rockâs face and he nods slowly. âYeah, I get that. I know you donât want to spend time down at Swayâs.â
âNah, not right now. Need more distance than that.â
âChaserâs place is always open to us.â
âIâd rather go some place warmer, maybe.â
âSparkyâs working out a deal with our friends near Phoenix.
âYeah.â Now thereâs a place that can help me get my mind off things. âComplete change of scenery might be best.â
âDonât forget theyâre into harder shit than we are. Riskier.â
âI donât even think I care right now.â
Rock nails me with what Teller and I have always referred to as his Dad Face. âThatâs a good way to land in jail or dead, so you better get your head on straight on the ride down before you decide to stick around.â
âI will. How much longer until Sparky needs me to go down there?â
âShould be any day.â
âGood, I have some loose ends to tie up around here.â
âI trust you not to leave us hanging.â Rockâs mouth curves into a slight smirk. âThe only thing I ask, is that you make sure you see Hope before you leave.â
âYou know it.â
I end up driving behind Axel to his apartment. Eventually my tears dry. Iâm still furious with Murphy. Hurt and embarrassed, too. A huge part of me is angry with Axel, to be honest. He acted so calm, like permanently leaving the club meant nothing to him.
My entire worldâs ripping apart. The reality that weâre having a baby hasnât quite set in yet, and now I have to deal with a canyon-sized rift in my family. How will I ever spend time up there with Axel? I want my son or daughter to have the benefit of being around the club. Axel wonât want to spend time up there after this. The club wonât want him there, either.
Iâm stuck.
I canât break up with the father of my child. Thatâs something my mother would have done.
âYou okay, babe?â Axel asks through my open car window.
âJust thinking.â
He stares at the open road behind us. Is he having regrets about leaving the club? Or thinking of driving away and never coming back? âCome on. Letâs go upstairs.â
Butterflies flutter in my belly and my blood pounds through my ears. Iâm not ready to do this.
But I have to.
When weâre inside his apartment, he pulls me over to the couch. âI hope youâre not mad at me,â he says.
âAbout what?â
âThat Iâm not going to be a part of the MC.â
âWas it Murphy? Did he vote you down?â
âYou know I canât tell you that. Itâs for the best, though, Heidi. I know theyâre family and you love them, but that lifestyle isnât for me.â
Lifestyle? What theâ Forget it. I canât bother with that now.
He wraps his hand around mine. âLetâs move in together. I found us a place near school, and Rock gave me some money for the security deposit.â
âHe did?â
âYeah. He wanted to make sure I take good care of you. Heâs going to give me a reference for a job.â
A small bit of relief washes over me. Maybe we will still be able to hang out with my family without it being awkward.
âReally?â
âYeah. And he said Iâm always welcome up there for family stuff. So, donât worry. This wonât change things.â
Sweet relief washes over me. Weâre going to be okay. âI need to talk to you.â
My grave tone silences him and he cocks his head, inviting me to speak.
âIâIâm pregnant. I took two tests and they were bothââ
âWhat the fuck?â He jumps up off the couch and paces in front of me. âAre you fucking serious, Heidi?â
His extreme reaction sets off sparks of fear in my stomach. âCalm down.â
âWhat are we going to do? I donât want to be a father. Iâm only twenty. How could you be so irresponsible? I thought you were on the pill?â
Oh, hell no. I practically fly off the couch and just barely restrain myself from choking him. âDo you think I got pregnant on my own? This is as much your fault as mine, Mr. âThereâs no sensation when I wear a condom.ââ
He glares at me and shoves his hands through his hair again. âDid you make an appointment yet?â
My stomach churns, because I donât think heâs asking if I made an appointment with my doctor.
âNo,â I whisper.
âHeidi. Weâre not ready. Youâre not ready for a baby. Itâs going to fuck everything up for both of us.â
Heâs not saying anything I havenât thought of myself, but each word stings so bad. I wanted him to comfort me and wanted us to sit down and figure things out together. I never expected him to be so furious.
âIs it even mine?â
His question pierces my heart. âHow can you ask me that? Youâre my onlyââ
âYou andââ
âNo!â
His eyes linger on mine, but I hold his stare. âHeidi, this isnât fair. You promised me if something like this happened, youâd get rid of it.â
Thatâs true. And at the time I absolutely meant it, but now? I canât. âI canât. I always thoughtâ¦but this is different. Itâs real. And I canât.â
I search his eyes, his face, seeking a trace of something I recognize. But all I find is anger.
âIâm out of here,â he says, opening the door and slamming it behind him.
A nasty voice inside my head asks why Iâm so surprised.
Iâve always been easy to leave.
Itâs dark and Iâm sprawled out on the couch. I should have left. Gone back to my brotherâs apartment, but Iâm mad at him, too. If thereâs a chance of working this out with Axel, I need to do that before I tell my brother Iâm pregnant.
My hand settles over my stomach. Even if Axel never comes back, this babyâs mine. And at least I know when we made it, we loved each other.
I wonder if my mother ever thinks of me. Wonders if Iâm okay? Stupid. Iâm pretty sure I know the answer to those questions.
Much later that night, Axel returns to the apartment.
He closes the door quietly and stares at me for a minute. I scramble to sit up, pulling the blanket up to my chin. He sighs and drops down to the opposite end of the couch.
âWhat do you want to do?â
âAxelââ
âWhat do you want to do?â he asks a little harsher this time.
âItâs our child.â
He leans forward putting his head in his hands and curses under his breath. After a minute, he picks his head up and stares at me. âExplain it. How does this make sense for us, Heidi?â
I sit up, tucking my feet under me. âI know it doesnâtâ¦make sense. It?
??s the wrong time, butââmy hand settles over my stomachââI have this little person inside me who I want to know. I want to give her all the things I didnât haveââ
One corner of his mouth lifts in a smile. âHer?â
âItâs a feeling.â
He cradles his head in his hands, staring at the floor for a few minutes before speaking. âWe should get married then,â he mumbles.
The shift in the direction of our conversation makes my head spin. âWhat?â
Finally, he picks his head up and looks at me âI donât wantâwe should get married.â
âEarlier you wanted me to get an abortion. Now you want to get married?â
He lifts his shoulders. A quick, jerky movement. âAt least maybe then your brother wonât kill me.â
His attempt at a joke sucks. When I donât say anything, he walks into his bedroom and returns with a red velvet box. âI was planning to give this to you after graduation anyway.â
âWhat is it?â Stupid question. Obviously, itâs a ring. He confirms it by opening the box and plucking out a delicate white gold ring that sparkles with tiny diamonds surrounding one larger diamond. There are scrolls and filigrees, giving it an antique look.
âIt was my grandmotherâs,â he explains after pushing it on my finger.
âItâs beautiful. Your parents wonât mind?â
His shoulders lift. âMy grandmother left it to me, to give to my future wife.â
âAnd you were planning to give it to me?â
âYeah.â His mouth turns up in a sad imitation of a smile. âWhen the time was right.â
Things settle down at the club after Axel leaves. No one talks about it. Hoot and Birch donât ask any questions about where their buddy went. Axelâs out. No further conversations need to happen.
Well, one conversation needs to happen, but Heidi wonât speak to me. Wonât answer my calls or texts. Nothing.
Teller finds me in the garage a couple afternoons later and stops to watch what Iâm working on. Although I talk to him every day, we havenât talked about Heidi or the vote.
âYou hear from her?â he asks while Iâm sifting through my toolbox.
