âI donât think it was strippers, Hope.â
Axelâs been so quiet, I almost forget heâs even with us. So it surprises me when he opens his mouth. âI donât think they were going to CB.â
Honestly, I donât even care if he is there. I trust Rock and as long as he comes home to me in one piece, Iâm fine.
Bronze is a nice guy. âYouâre Hope! The woman who made Rock break his âno womenâs names on my bodyâ rule,â he greets me with a big smile.
Trinity giggles.
âHowâre your pieces doing, darlinâ?â he asks her.
âFine.â
Bronze gets me in his chair and tells me all sorts of stories about Rock in his younger days. Mostly ink-related, but they put me at ease regardless. We go over what I want. Mrs. North and a delicate scroll design underneath. I let him know I plan to come back with Rock and have the crown added later. We discuss size and placement. After all the talking, Iâm sort of eager to get it done with, but Iâm grateful that heâs so thorough.
âGood call. Heâs not gonna kick my ass for touching you, is he?â
âI donât think so.â
Bronze laughs. Heâs neither insulted nor scared. I like this guy.
My opinion changes about ten minutes later. âGod dammit that hurts!â I yelp for the second time.
âSit still, darlinâ,â he warns me.
âIâm trying.â
Trinity moves closer and holds my hand. âSqueeze my hand, Hope. Oh, fuck ow! Not that hard!â she says with a gasp and I try to loosen up.
Eventually my side buzzes into a stinging-numb sensation and Iâm able to relax.
âAll done,â Bronze says, snapping me out of my haze. He hands me a mirror so I can get a better look. What I can see is pretty, but mostly itâs black ink and red, angry looking skin. âCrap, will that look better by Saturday?â
âThe redness will lessen. But it will take a little longer to fully settle down. By then youâll be ready for the crown.â
âMaybe,â I mutter as he places ointment, gauze and tape over it.
âWeâre gonna see you, Saturday, right?â Trinity asks.
âHell yeah. I wouldnât miss seeing Rock get hitched.â
I grin. âYouâll keep it a secret, though, right? I want to surprise him.â
âIâll pretend weâve never met.â
âThanks.â
My offer to pay him is rebuffed. âWedding present,â he says.
âThat was awfully sweet,â I say to Trinity as we leave.
âHeâs a good guy.â
âWhere to, Hope?â Axel asks when we get to the car.
âHome.â
CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE
âDeep breath, Hope. Suck it in,â Trinity, the torture expert, says behind me.
âIâ¦canâtâ¦suckâ¦in⦠anymore.â
âIf you can still talk, youâre not sucking in hard enough,â Lilly jokes.
âYou would know,â I snap.
âOooh, sheâs bitchy without oxygen.â
Trinity huffs out an annoyed burst of air. âYouâre not helping, Lilly.â
âSorry. Sorry. Come on, Hope. You donât need those last two ribs.â
âI hate you both,â I grumble before taking another deep breath.
âUgh. We should have been training you to wear this all week,â Trinity huffs as she cinches, tugs and yanks my corset into place. There is nothing pretty or elegant about the process.
âPhew.â I glance down. âOh, hello there. Iâm not used to having my girls right under my chin.â I snicker and snort at my own joke. Trinity and Lilly both give me strange looks.
âIs she drunk?â Trinity asks.
âNo, I think sheâs nervous. Come on, Hope. Letâs get your dress on,â Lilly prods, taking me by the arm and tugging me in front of the mirror.
Once Iâm zipped into my dress, Iâm even more nervous.
âBoots or flats, ladies? Time to help me decide.â
âOh, please wear the boots. Theyâre so cute,â Trinity pleads.
âHi, ladies!â Mara greets as she enters the room.
âOh, thank God. I was worried you and Damon got lost and thereâd be no one to marry us andââ
Mara cuts me off before I go into full freak-out mode. âNope. Lillyâs man met us down at Wardâs and we followed him up.â
âHeâs not my man,â Lilly corrects.
Mara rolls her whole head in a dramatic gesture. âSure, whatever you say.â
A more tentative knock on the door stops our joking around. âCome in!â
Heidi pokes her head in the room. âHi. Am I allowed to hang out in here?â
âOf course, sweetheart.â I motion for her to come in and shut the door. She seems really down, completely opposite of how she was when I saw her a few hours ago.
âEverything okay, honey?â Mara asks.
âYeah.â She tips her head up and finally smiles. âYou look so pretty, Hope.â
âThank you,â I answer and then remember my gifts for Mara and Heidi. âHold on,â I mumble as I rifle through the bag of stuff I brought downstairs with me last night. Trinity taps me on the shoulder and holds out two boxes. âOh. Thanks.â
âMy thank-you present for being such wonderful bridesmaids,â I explain as I hand the boxes to Mara and Heidi. Earrings that match their dresses are nestled inside. Iâd given Lilly and Trinity their gifts last night.
Heidi squeals when she pulls them out. âTheyâre so pretty! I donât have any dangly ones like this. Grams never let me wear them.â
âOh, good.â
âI wish I was wearing my hair up now,â she says as she stares in the mirror.
Trinity brushes Heidiâs hair off her shoulder. âI can help you put it up if you want.â
Heidi blinks and stares at Trinity for a second before answering. âIâd love it. Thanks.â
Trinity goes to work and Iâm jealous, because it seems thereâs nothing Trinity isnât good at.
Mara and Lilly are busy goofing around. I catch Heidi staring at me in the mirror. âWhatâs wrong, honey?â
âNothing.â She winces as Trinity works a bobby pin into her hair. âDid you know Murphy was bringing a date?â
Yikes. âHe mentioned it when I was doing the invitations.â
âOh. Do you know her?â
âUh, Iâve met her. Sheâs a nice girl.â
Trinity makes this weird eyes-wide-raised-eyebrow face at me and I shrug.
âIs your boyfriend in the wedding?â Mara asks Heidi. She knows damn well Axelâs ushering guests. I think itâs her way of reminding Heidi sheâs here with someone too.
âAll done. What do you think?â Trinity asks.
âOh, itâs so pretty! Thank you, Trinity.â
Trinity nods and grabs her camera for a few photos.
âYou should have gotten a picture of us wrestling her into the corset,â Lilly says with a snicker.
I casually throw my middle finger up at her and she laughs even harder.
Trinity sets the camera down and gives Heidi a serious look. âOkay, we need you to help us, help her decide. Boots or flats?â
Mara holds up both options for Heidiâs inspection.
âThe boots are cool,â she finally says. I feel like she held the âfor an old personâ portion of her thought to herself.
âOkay. Boots it is. Now, since I canât bend over, which one of you is helping me into them?â
Trinity, Lilly and Mara pretend to play rock, paper, scissors. âVery funny, girls.â
Shoes had been the last decision I needed to make. Now that Iâm in the boots, my hairâs styled into a half-up-half-down, curly thing thatâs actually really pretty and Iâm all made up, I feel strangely calm.
I should be nervous. Shouldnât I? Glancing down at my hands I wiggle my fingers, watching the gold, glittery tips catch the light. âThis looks great, Trinity.â
âThank you.â
After a few deep bre
aths, I realize I really am calm. Nothing in my life has ever felt as right as this does. Thatâs crazy, right? The man Iâm marrying just barely skipped going to prison for murder. My decision-making skills might be seriously impaired.
But Iâm not stupid. And Iâve made my peace withâ¦things. I survived and I donât think I could have gone through something like that before I knew Rock. Heâs also given me something Iâve never had before. Family. A family who came together and kept me together. Who would die to protect one another. I love them too. So much my chest aches.
âAre you nervous?â Heidi asks softly.
âNo.â
Lilly gives me a skeptical look.
âI was. But I feel good.â My voice breaks and I end up whispering. âI love Rock.â
Mara pulls me in for a hug. âIâm so happy you two found each other.â
âThanks.â
Trinityâs sort of hanging back, fidgeting and I realize sheâs trying not to cry. âDonât you dare cry, Trin. Youâll make me cry and I donât have time to fix the layers of makeup you guys painted on me.â
That makes Trinity laugh and she comes over to give me a big hug. âShit, I love you. Youâre exactly what heâs needed since the day I met him.â
âThanks.â
Lilly looks at me and nods. Only the slight tremble of her lower lip tells me sheâs also a little emotional.
The three of us had what turned into a big giggle-sobfest last night when we held our pre-wedding slumber party in Trinityâs room.
The look on Wrathâs face when he got sent upstairs to his old room had kept us laughing for hours.
Banging on the bedroom door stops us. âPlease tell me Hopeâs still here,â Z shouts.
I fling open the door, surprising him and he steps back. âIâm here.â
âThank God.â He takes me in from head to toe. âForget Rock, you want to marry me instead?â
âIs that your way of saying I look okay?â
âMore than okay, sweetheart.â
Heat rushes over my cheeks and my nose tingles. âThank you.â
âWhoâs giving you away, Hope?â Lilly asks, drawing Zâs attention away from me.
âNo one. Iâm a grown woman. Iâm giving myself,â I grumble. Z chuckles. âI hope that doesnât offend you, Mr. Traditional.â
His eyes widen and I think he wishes I hadnât said that in front of Lilly. Oops. Good thing he doesnât know how I blubbered to Lilly about how sweet and kind Z is under all his rough exterior last night.
âNot at all, Ms. Kendall.â He holds his arm out for me. âCome on, Iâm your ride out to the ceremony.â
I turn and glance at Trinity who shrugs. âWhat? We canât make you hike through the woods in your dress.â
As we walk out front, I wave to Murphy and Teller who are patiently waiting out front.
It occurs to me there are a lot of questions about the ceremony and after-party I never bothered to ask Trinity. Iâm not even sure where on the property weâre getting married. A flash of guilt singes me and I turn so fast, I almost knock Z over. Trinityâs eyes flare and she stiffens when I throw my arms around her. âThank you so much for everything youâve done for me.â
After a second of hesitation, she returns the embrace. âNo problem.â
I pull away and laugh so I donât cry. âIâm a terrible bride, arenât I?â
âNope. Easiest bride Iâve ever worked with,â she jokes. âAnd youâre a good friend, so I was happy to do it.â
Murphy clears his throat. âUh, are you marrying Rock or Trinity, Hope?â
We both glare at him and he snickers. âCome on, Rockâs probably worried you ran away.â
âNah, front gateâs locked tight,â Z assures us.
I snort. âIf anyone should run, itâs Rock.â
The guys think thatâs hilarious. Teller steps forward to give me a quick hug. âYou look really pretty, Hope.â
âThanks.â
I get a quick hug from Murphy too.
âI guess Wrathâs keeping Rock from running away?â I ask.
No one bothers to answer me.
Someone wrapped pretty green and gold ribbons around the clubâs side-by-side utility vehicles and thatâs what the guys use to drive us out toâ¦a clearing with a stone amphitheater.
I twist in my seat. âTrinity? What the?â
âRockâs never brought you out here?â
The building site for our house is in the opposite direction. Even during all my brooding hikes through the woods, Iâd never explored this part of the property before. âNo.â
Z grins from ear to ear. âWe donât use it a lot. The prospects have been busy fixing it up. Clearing brush, repairing the stone, weeding. All the fun stuff.â
Trinity points to the rock wall encircling what looks like low stone benches. âThe tent for dinner, music, and everything is on the other side.â
My mouth works, but no sounds come out.
The guys stop too far away for me to see Rock or anyone else.
Z gets out and gives me his hand. The corner of his mouth lifts at my cowgirl boots. âNice touch.â
It feels like I blink and Trinityâs standing in front of me.
âThis is it. Are you ready?â
âThis is a good spot, since youâre sacrificing your manhood and all,â Wrath says as he gestures at the stone altar weâre standing in front of while we wait.
âPlease. Like youâre not dying to do the same thing.â
His answering grin is wide and full of mischief. So far heâs been doing a good job of keeping our guests away from me. Iâm so wound up Iâm liable to clock the first person who cracks a âlast moments of freedomâ joke.
Perceptive asshole that he is, Wrath cocks his head at me. âYou nervous?â
âYeah, worried as fuck sheâs gonna realize what a mistake this is and run the fuck away.â I tried saying it as a joke, but it doesnât come out that way at all. I just sound like a pansy-assed dipshit.
âFront gateâs locked,â he answers.
âThanks.â
He shrugs. âIâve done everything I can think of to chase her away, and sheâs still here. She must love you.â
âYeah, I owe you an ass-kicking or two for givinâ her grief.â
âAnytime, brother.â He laughs, not taking my threat seriously.
âHelp me fix this fucking tie.â
âLike I know how. I canât believe she got you into that thing.â
I glance down at the gray suit. Same one Iâve worn out with her before. âShe didnât ask.â
âChrist, you really are whipped.â
I shrug, because thatâs probably true and I canât seem to find a fuck to give about it. âShe likes it on me.â
âYouâre lucky I like her so much. I still canât believe I let her kick me out of my own room last night.â
âSorry.â My apology sounds completely insincere since Iâm laughing as I say it.
âI get the whole âno sex before the wedding thingâ for you. But whyâd I get punished with it?â
âIâm glad you understand it, because I donât.â
âYouâll see,â he answers with a smug grin.
Before I can prod him for more information, the sound of UTVs reaches me.
âGirls must be here,â Wrath says. He smacks my arm. âClose your mouth, you look like you got kicked in the head by a mule.â
Damon chuckles as he walks up and shakes my hand. âHow are you feeling, Rock?â
âGood. Ready to get it over with.â
He nods as if heâs heard that a hundred times. He probably has.
This. All of this is nothing like my first wedding. I hate myself a little for even making the comparison, but itâs true.
As if he read my mind, Wrath steps closer. âNever, ever thought youâd do this again.â
I wait for whatever obnoxious comment heâs dying to make. âAnd?â
âAnd nothing. Iâm happy for yo
u. For both of you. Through sickness and health, incarceration and freedom.â He nudges me with his arm. âYou should add that to your vows.â
Iâd laugh, but Iâm choked up. Yes, Hope stood by me.
Then Iâm not thinking about anything. Thereâs no music, but a hush falls over the rowdy crowd and my eyes lock on Hope. She really did it. She found a green dress and itâs fucking perfect. Sheâs perfect.
I canât stop staring at her face. Not really taking in any details, just the overall picture of how beautiful she is. I take a few steps and meet her, covering her hands with my own. âIâm glad you came.â
Her mouth tips into the pretty smile I love so much. âMe too,â she says a little shaky. She blows out a flustered breath and smiles wider. âI mean, Iâm glad youâre here,â
âNo place else Iâd want to be.â I lean down and take her lips in a soft kiss, forgetting where we are.
SomeoneâDamon I thinkâclears his throat. Heidi giggles.
Hope pulls back and blinks up at me and the overwhelming sense of how lucky I am washes over me.
Lucky that we finally got to this point.
âLetâs get married,â she whispers.
CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX
The actual wedding part of our wedding day is a blur. I think I spoke the correct words when I was supposed to. Mostly I just stared at Rock, in awe of how much I love him and how happy I am.
His gaze roamed over me once, taking in the green dress with a slow smile. After that his eyes never wandered from my face. As many times as weâve been teased about being sex-crazed maniacs, Rock made it clear by that simple action that he was more worried about my thoughts than my body. I think I fell in love with him even more right there at the altar.
After the brief ceremony, our wild biker crowd couldnât contain themselves another second. Whoops, cheers and congratulations filled the woods. Along with about two-dozen monarch butterflies Trinity handed us to release from a decorative box.
There were a lot of guests to keep up with. Many Iâd met before. Some I hadnât. When I got overwhelmed, Rock ushered me to a quiet area and held me close.
âCome on, Baby Doll. You need to eat something,â Rock suggested, tugging me back to our table. With the fierce look on his face, no one dared approach us as we made our way up front. Trinity had gone above and beyond with decorating the tent. White twinkly lights glittered from above and all around us.
