âMy ass was in a cell, so they know I didnât have anything to do with it.â
âYeah, except two days later your ass was sprung.â He leans forward. âHereâs my problem, now they cominâ after me.â
âFuck.â
âYeah. Two nights ago they grabbed one of my girls.â
âShit,â Z mutters.
Loco pins Z with a harsh stare. âI got her back, but she ainât gonna be any good to me for a while.â
Now I feel like shit. Itâs bad enough Vipers fucked with me. But them going after my business associates and innocents pisses me the fuck off.
âNow, I been helpinâ your boy, Sway with his problem down south, but itâs cost me some territory here. I gotta stay focused, you know?â
âYeah.â
âI know that ainât got nothinâ to do with you. My relationship with themâs worked in my favor.â
âGood.â
âWay I see it, you and me got a common enemy. It only makes sense for us to work together to get rid of the Vipers.â
âI agree.â
He looks surprised that I agreed so easily. But Iâm not stupid. If weâre going to do this right, I need his help. âI want to push them out of Ironworks. My clubâs not big enough right now to hold that territory on our own.â
âSo you want my crew to do it?â Heâs grinning like a maniac and I wonder what the fuck Iâve gotten myself into.
âWe want easier access to Vermont. Right now, I need to get to Bennington, weâve gotta go up to Lake George, into Rutherford and back down.â
âYou gonna try and move product into Vermont?â
âMaybe. Not right now. Youâre still getting my entire supply.â
Smug fucker grins at that. âIronworks is dry. Lot of product to move there. Fuck Vermont. But I get what youâre saying. We can definitely do that. Teamwork, Rock.â
Inwardly, I groan. But I flash a tight smile. Next to me, Wrath moves ever so slightly. Laughing, Iâm sure. Dick.
âLast thing, Rock. And I want you to remember I donât have to explain myself to you. This is pure courtesy, since I got mad respect for you.â
Oh, I canât wait to hear this.
âWhat Ironworks lacks in weed, they make up for in pussy. And I know you done everything to keep that out of Empire. I respect that, butââ
âSince when are you working girls?â
âSince I recognized the need for my services. Viper girls are miserable. Half them high as fuck and hooked on all sorts of shit. They ainât happy willing little hookers.â
My stomach twists. âYeah?â
âI got a stable of ten solid girls. Taking a page from your book, you know. Treat âem well. Fair split, provide protection and they bring in a ton of cash.â
âMy what?â
âYour dance club? Everyone says you guys run it fair so bitches are trippinâ over themselves to work there.â
âOkay.â
âAnd your club. Your brothers are all solid. Got your back no matter what. âCause they know youâd do the same.â He shrugs. âWorks better than ruling by fear. Better results.â
âOh, weâre still afraid of him,â Wrath says with a snicker.
Z glances over at me. âPositive reinforcement, prez.â
My morningâs taken an even more bizarre twist than I could have imagined. âAs much as I enjoy having you psycho-analyze me and my crew, can we get to the point?â
Loco leans in again. âMy point is, me and my crew will help you get the Vipers out of Ironworks, split the area with you, keep things tight, and in return you donât give me shit about my working girls.â
âWhere are you running this from?â
He gives me a sly smile. âWater Street.â
A short, sharp laugh bursts out from my throat. âYou shittinâ me? Youâre running a brothel right in downtown Ironworks? No wonder youâre on Ransomâs radar.â
His shoulders lift in a phony-sheepish gesture. âI got a good deal on a nice brownstone. Ironworks PD is easy, keep the street clean, hand âem a few bucks and they look the other way.â
âYeah, except they probably ran straight to Ransom and told him what you were up to.â
Loco cocks his head as if that thought had never occurred to him.
âYeah, okay.â I hold out my hand and he shakes it. âWeâll get a plan together.â
âFair enough. You can come check the house out if you want. See the girls are there willingly. Come and go as they please. Any girl you want is on the house.â
Yeah, I canât imagine anything I want to do less. âNo, thanks.â
CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR
The last couple weeks before the wedding are nuts. Iâm elbow deep in invites when Murphy finds me in the dining room.
âHope, I get an âand guestâ too right?â Murphy asks.
Iâm curious who he plans to bring. âOf course.â
âCool. Thanks.â
I raise an eyebrow and wait for him to elaborate. âYou remember Serena? Sheâs taking classes up here. I donât know, weâve been hanging out.â
âOh, thatâs great. She seemed so sweet when we met.â
Murphyâs taken aback but he shakes it off. âHow pissed do you think Heidi will be?â
Crap. I hadnât thought about it. Another thought occurs to me. One I donât like very much. âWait, youâre not inviting her here to make Heidi jealous, are you? Because thatâs not fair to Heidi or Serena.â
He shakes his head but takes a second to meet my eyes. âNo. I donât know. I donât know what Iâm doing anymore. Iâm trying to do the right thing for her, but itâs making me miserable.â
âWell, itâs not all about you.â
âI know. She says she loves Axel. All the time. And how happy he makes her. But donât know if she means it or sheâs trying to rub my nose in it or what.â
Honestly, itâs probably all of those things combined, given that Heidiâs seventeen. âGirls at that age are a little nuts Murphy. I remember. I know I was.â
His eyes widen as if it never occurred to him Iâd ever been a teenager. âYes, Murphy, I havenât always been an old hag.â
The burly jerk laughs. âYouâre far from hag territory, Hope.â His laughter stops abruptly and he turns serious. âI feel like a creepy perv waiting âtil her birthday, you know?â
âYeah, itâs a little creepy,â I agree and he smirks. âDonât look at it that way. Just be her friend like you always have. If itâs meant to be it will.â I lower my voice, because I feel like a traitor for saying what Iâm about to say. âI like Axel. A lot. Heâs a good kid.â Murphy nods grudgingly. âBut Axelâs her first real boyfriend. Girls rarely end up with their high school boyfriend. When she starts college, she mightââ
âMeet someone else? Great.â
I chuckle. âAll Iâm saying is they might go their separate ways. All on their own.â
His mouth turns up, and I cut off whatever heâs about to say. âYou mess with them and do something to break them up, sheâll end up hating you, Murphy. Just let it happen naturally.â
âThanks, Hope. Sorry Iâm being such a pussy when I know you got other stuff to do.â
I roll my eyes at him. âYouâd be a bigger pussy if you just bottled it up.â
He barks out a laugh. âI guess. But I wouldnât talk about it with any ofââ
âThe guys?â
âYeah. Or Teller. I think heâs relieved Heidiâs with Axel.â He snorts. âDonât blame him. I had a sister, I wouldnât want her with me either.â
The way he says it honestly breaks my heart a little. âYouâre a good guy. If I had a younger sister, Iâd let her date you.â
I donât care if he gets mad, I have to give him a hug. He lets me and wraps his arms around me.
âI wish youâd been around ten years ago to steer all us fuckers in the right direction.â
âWho says I knew anything back then?â
Trinity keeps me
running from one place to the next. For a simple, low-key wedding there seems to be an awful lot to do.
Suspiciously, I never see a bill for anything.
âTheyâll bill after,â Trinity says one day when I ask.
âBullshit. Rockâs taking care of everything, isnât he?â
She grins and shrugs. I feel bad, because I know Rockâs accounts must have taken a beating after the thousands of dollars in legal fees we had to hand over to Glassman.
âIâm fine,â he assures me when I ask.
âJust go with it, Mrs. North,â Trinity teases me over dinner a few nights before the big day.
My cheeks heat and I steal a glance at Rock, whoâs wearing a half-smirk. Wrath and Trinity both stare at us. âWhat?â Trinity asks.
âNothing.â
âI donât think Hope plans to change her name,â Rock says.
âKendallâs my maiden name,â I explain.
Everyone except Rock stares at me.
âYouâre okay with that?â Z asks Rock and I shoot a glare at him.
Rock chuckles. âCareful, Z.â
âWhat is this, 1950? Seriously, this really surprises you guys that much?â
Wrath shakes his head. âNope. None of our business anyway.â He shifts and Z winces.
âWhyâre you kicking me, fucker?â Z grumbles.
Rock picks his fork back up. âProbably better for her anyway, in case shit goes down in the future.â
That certainly takes my appetite away.
âGonna file separate taxes too?â Z asks.
âWhyâre you guys so nosy?â I snap.
Wrath holds his hands up. âHey, I didnât say a word.â
Rock pins him with a stare. âThereâs married, filing separate or whatever. Let the accountant figure it out.â
âBut thatâsââ I snap my mouth shut, but I think Rock senses what I was going to say. His mouth quirks into another wry smile.
âWhat, Baby Doll?â
âWhen I took tax law, we were taught only politicians and criminals file that way,â I mumble.
Everyoneâeven Rockâhas a good chuckle.
âJerks.â
Rock lifts his chin at Trinity. âYou got a final guest list, Ms. Party Planner?â
Yes, she does. She shoves her plate out of the way and pulls her staggeringly large wedding binder up, dropping it on the table with a thud. The binderâs rarely more than a few feet away from her. The guys groan when they see it.
âCan we burn that thing when the weddingâs over?â Teller asks.
Trinity glares at him. âNo. Iâm saving all my notes for Heidiâs wedding.â
Everyone gets a good laugh at that.
Except Teller.
âWhere is she, anyway?â Murphy asks and Teller glares at him.
âLibrary.â
âIs that code for Axelâs apartment?â Z snickers.
âFuck off,â Teller gripes.
Oh boy. Heidiâs eighteenth birthdayâs only a few weeks after the wedding. But since her classes started, sheâs been asserting her independence a lot more, driving Teller nuts in the process.
âGuest list?â Rock prompts.
âEveryone from Downstate RSVPâd yes.â
âOh, goodie,â I mutter. Trinity catches my eye and chuckles.
âYour people all said yes,â Trinity says, pointing at me. âExcept, I didnât get anything back from your mom.â Her mouth twists down and I shrug.
âIâm not surprised. Itâs better that way.â
âWolf Knights officers are coming. Youâre sure youâre okay with them being up here, Rock?â Trinity asks.
He sits back and I watch as his gaze strays to Z and Wrath before answering. âYup. Our clubs are good.â
âOkay.â
âDid you guys figure out Rockâs bachelor party?â I ask.
âOh, yeah. We got something big planned,â Z answers while rubbing his palms together.
âI donât even want to know.â
âHe wouldnât let us get strippers,â Murphy says. âWe had to improvise.â
I hold up my hands in an innocent gesture. âJust so you know, that is not my fault. I told him I didnât have a problem with it.â
The guys laugh. âWe figured.â
âYou assholes will understand one day,â Rock grumbles.
âFuck, I understand now. I donât want them either,â Wrath adds with a big grin.
Trinity gives him a curious look.
After that scintillating dinner conversation, I pull Trinity out of the dining room, into the hallway.
âCan you help me with something?â
âAnything, Hope.â
I push her into her room, so none of the guys overhear us. âI want to get a tattoo.â
âReally? What?â
I point to my lower hip. âMrs. North, with his crown, maybe?â
âDonât you think he should go with you?â
âNo. I want to surprise him. Heâll never expect it.â
âThatâs true.â
âAt least the Mrs. North part, he can go back and help me have the crown added later.â
âChickening out?â
âHow much does it hurt?â
âIâm the wrong person to ask. I donât tolerate it well for some reason.â
âThatâs not encouraging.â
âSorry.â
I bite my lip. I really want to do this. A little pain is worth it. âCan you help me set it up before the wedding?â
âHow are you going to hide it from him?â
âIâll just tell him no sex before the wedding.â
Trinity laughs so hard, she starts hiccupping, which is of course, when Wrath comes in. âWhatâd you do to my girl, Hope?â
âNothing.â I throw Trinity a pleading look and she finally stops laughing.
âLet me tell him, he can set it up. Itâs his friend.â
âNo way. Heâll tell Rock.â
âHey. I kept your secret about going to get his wedding band,â Wrath protests.
Thatâs right he did. âPromise not to laugh?â
âNow, Cinderella, donât have me make promises I canât keep.â
Trinity starts laughing again. âDonât tease her,â she says between giggles.
âI want to get âMrs. Northâ tattooed on me.â
Wrath doesnât laugh, but he does stare at me for a minute before answering. âDonât you think heâll want to go with you?â
âYes, but I want to surprise him. Wait a second. I donât have to take my pants off, do I?â
They both laugh at me. Jerks.
âWhere, Hope?â Wrath finally asks.
âEither my lower hip, or between my shoulder blades.â
âHip might hurt less since itâs fleshier,â Wrath points out.
âAre you calling me fat?â
He rolls his eyes to the ceiling and actually mutters âGod help me,â which I find hysterical. âYes, Iâll set it up for you, Hope,â he finally says.
âThank you.â
âHow are you going to keep it a secret?â
âOh, tell him, Hope,â Trinity giggles.
âNo sex before the wedding.â
Wrath just stares at me.
âWhat? Lots of people do that. Itâs romantic.â
He covers Trinityâs ears with his hands. âStop giving her ideas.â
I point at him. âJerks. Both of you.â
My brothers put the perfect bachelor party together for me. A way to put some of the bad shit of the past few months in my rear view so I can start my future with Hope, knowing some scores are settled.
Vipers are next on my list. Although, Locoâs been doing a good job holding up his end. His crewâs made a lot of progress in Ironworks.
Things are looking up.
Well, as âupâ as they can be when going on a murder spree two nights before my wedding.
Murder spreeâs more dramatic than what it actually
is.
Just a bit of payback.
Izzardâs still wearing two hand casts when we track him down. In Viper territory. Fancy that.
Vipers are running their own brothel outside Ironworks city limits in the middle of nowhere. Itâs a sad, ramshackle, hillbilly crackden type of house. Thatâs where Izzard spends his time when heâs not busy beating on inmates and molesting olâ ladies.
Figures.
I told Hope on the beach that Iâve never enjoyed hurting someone before. It was true at the time.
But this Iâm going to enjoy the fuck out of.
Wrath and Z take care of clearing the downstairs for me, getting the girls out and keeping them quiet so they donât run and bring a bunch of Vipers back before Iâm ready to deal with them.
Ransom has been a slippery fucker to track down. Where the Vipers are hiding their shady prez is a mystery, but itâs only a matter of time before we find him.
No loose ends.
The lock clicks as I open the door to the room Lizardâs waiting in. âWhat took so long, bitch?â he snaps.
I close the door behind me. âI ainât here to suck your dick, Lizard.â
âOh, fuck,â he gasps. Like the pussy I know he is, he opens his mouth to yell for help.
The nine-millimeter in my hand shuts him up. âIâm just here for my five minutes, like I promised.â
He shakes his head and tries to sit up.
I lean against the dresser across from the bed. The pose is casual, but inside Iâm anything but.
âSee, messing with me was one thing. I get it. Iâm a bad guy. But once you touched my womanââ
âI got a kid.â
I straighten up and circle around to the other side of the bed. âYeah? Whenâs the last time you saw your son?â
He opens his mouth, but Iâm not here to get in touch with our feelings. And I already know the answer.
Turns out I donât even need the whole five minutes.
âDid Wrath tell you what they were doing tonight?â I ask Trinity as Axel holds the door to the tattoo shop open for us.
âNo. He said it was club business, not a bachelor party.â
âMy ass,â I grumble.
