Page 12 of White Heat (Lost Kings MC 5)
Murphy sits up a little straighter and grins. âRemember that piece of shit jeep I fixed up for Trin?â
Trinity snorts. âIt was better than the beater I had. I loved that thing.â
âOh man, it was rough though. Rock used to give me projects like that all the time.â
âHad to keep you out of trouble somehow,â Wraths says
âTrue, I was a little asshole.â
âWhat do you mean, was?â Z asks and punches Murphyâs arm.
Murphy just laughs harder. âOh, man. Weâd never get away with that shit now. Rock doesnât let guys prospect âtil theyâre eighteen. Closest thing weâve got are the kids at Wrathâs gym.â
Thatâs news to me. Wrath smirks at my raised eyebrow. âDidnât know I was kid-friendly, did ya?â
âGrinder would get a kick out of that,â Z says.
âAw fuck, I gotta go pay him a visit and let him know whatâs going on before he hears it from someone else,â Murphy says. âPoor old guy was thrilled Rock came out to visit him a while back. This will crush him.â
âWhen we were on a break?â I ask before they change subject. I canât help wondering why Rockâs never mentioned his mentor and why he doesnât visit him more often.
âWhich one?â Z snickers.
Wrath shoots him a dirty look. âPhone.â
Pulling my legs up to my chest, I wrap my arms around them and prop my chin on my knees. The soft flannel of my pants feels good, and I must be high, because I end up rubbing my face over the material. âYou guys must think Iâm a real bitch, huh? Hereâs Rockâs giving up all this free pussy and Iâm giving him a hard time over a phone?â
Wrath laughs so hard he jostles Trinity around. âHis own fucking fault.â
Z bobs his head up and down. âWe told him women like youââ
âWhat do you mean women like me?â
Trinity sits up watching Z intently and he falters. I think he realizes whatever heâs about to say will insult one of us.
âWhat he means is, women who arenât familiar with MCs,â Wrath explains.
Trinity pats him on the chest. âOh, good save, Wrecking Ball.â
âThank you. Anyway, what was the conversation he had with you about the phone, Hope?â
âHe didnât.â
âRight.â Wrath points at Z.
âHereâs Hopeâs phone, install a tracking app for me,â Z repeats.
Wrath nods. âYouâre a reasonable girl. All he had to do was explainââ
âYes!â I say a little louder than I meant to. âThank you.â
Wrath turns to Trinity. âWhat did I say to you, babe?â
She grins. âGive Z your phone so he can stick a tracker in it, just in case, babe,â she says in a lousy imitation of Wrathâs deep rumbly voice.
âExactly. Rockâs conversation with you would have needed to be about five minutes longer.â He holds up his hand, wiggling his fingers in the air to emphasize his point.
âRock does what Rock thinks is best,â Z says.
âAnd it gets his ass in trouble,â Wrath snickers.
Trinity shakes her head. âYou guys are mean.â
Suddenly the conversation weighs on me. âSeems insignificant now. Iâd let him stick a tracking collar around my neck this minute, if it meant heâd be home.â
The guys stop and stare at me.
âFor fuckâs sake, Hope, donât give these cavemen any ideas,â Trinity snaps.
âSomehow, I missed all of that,â Murphy says after we all stop laughing at the girls.
I have a sneaking suspicion I know the answer to my next question, but curiosity forces me to ask anyway. âHope, I gotta ask. How did you two end up resolving that?â
Z opens his mouth and I can see the âpussy whippedâ comment forming so I cut him off. âI want to know if my guess is right.â
Her cheeks turn pink and she glances away before answering. âRock gave me the same thing.â
I raise an eyebrow for her to add some detail.
âHe gave me the same tracking app, but made me promise to never, ever come looking for him. If I was worried to let you guys know.â Her big green eyes seem to plead with me not to be upset with her man. And Iâm not. I understand why Rock would do something like that and trust his judgment.
Trinity sits up a little straighter. âHey. Whereâs mine?â
âOn your phone, angel. You should pay better attention.â
She smacks her hand against my chest and settles back down, rubbing her forehead against my cheek.
Zâs dying to bust on someone and since I ruined his fun, he turns his mischief-making face on Murphy. âWerenât we busting your balls?â
âBust away, asshole.â
Teller wanders in while weâre still chuckling at Murphyâs expense. He scrubs his hands over his face and looks us all over. âWhat the fuck you all doing up?â
âPull up a chair.â Zâs laughing so hard he can barely get any words out. âWeâre filling first lady in on what a chubby little fucker Murphy was.â
Teller snorts and pulls out the chair across from Murphy. His eyes go to me and Trin briefly, then Hope. âTheyâre exaggerating, Hope. He was husky not chubby.â
Everyone at the table bursts out laughing.
Hope giggles like a little girl and Iâm glad we cheered her up, even if itâs only for a few minutes. âGosh, you two are brothers.â
Teller and Murphy grin at each other. âFuck yeah,â Teller says. âI kept bitching at my mother to give me a little brother for years. When she got pregnant with Heidi, I was like what the fuck is this shit? I asked for a brother.â
Murphy snorts and shakes his head. âWhatâd you want her to do, put an order in?â
âDude, I was ten. What the fuck did I know? Anyway, thereâs this chubby little ginger getting the shit kicked out of him one day, so I wander over, beat the snot out of the two punks harassing him and found my own little brother.â
âHe told his mom that too,â Murphy says.
âI did. I was like I got this. You can give Heidi back.â
Hopeâs laughing so hard she almost falls out of Rockâs chair. âVery proactive, Teller, I like that.â
âOf course thatâs not what happened. And my mother was such a space cadet that I ended up taking care of Heidi more often than not, which meant Murphy did too.â
Murphy nods. âYeah, she was like the size of a loaf of bread the first time I ever saw her.â Dumbass uses his hands to demonstrate something between the size of a football and bale of hay.
âAwww,â Hope coos and I roll my eyes. Sheâs such a softy.
âChrist, if Iâd known she was gonna be such a holy terror, I would have insisted she give her back,â Teller says affectionately.
I snort. âPlease, you love that little brat.â
âOf course I do.â
âYouâve had a lot of responsibility since you were little.â Hope looks at each of us. âYou all have.â
âThatâs how I started doing jobs for the club. Rock would pay me to run stupid errands and stuff. I needed money for shit for Heidi or whatever, and heâd always have something for me to do.â
âAnd you were always trying to talk him into letting you take hisââ
Teller cuts Z off with an excited head shake. âHope, he had this classic kickstart â76 Super Glide. Rockâs rule wasââ
Murphy groans, but the two of them say it together. âIf you canât kickstart your bike, youâre not allowed to ride it.â
I doubt Hope knows what to make of any of it, but sheâs smiling as she listens to the two of them reminisce. âWhat happened to it?â she finally asks.
Teller flicks his gaze at me, unsure of how to answer. âCarla sold it behind his back when he went inside,â I end up explaining.
âOh. He told me she sold it. I didnât realize it had been a classicââ
âWasnât worth shit,â Z interrupts. âMid-AMF years. It was more sentimental value
. Rebuilt that Shovelhead himself and worked on every inch of that ride.â
Teller groans. âI spent a lot of afternoons fetching him all the shit for that rebuild.â
Z snorts. âTeller wouldnât take charity, even when he actually needed it. Preferred to earn every penny.â
âNothing wrong with that,â I add.
âItâs an attractive quality in a man,â Hope says and we all turn our heads her way. âWhat? It is.â
Trinity yawns and pushes herself upright. âNot if they work so much they have no time for you.â
âTrying to tell me something, Angel Face?â
She settles back down, laying her cheek against my shoulder and squeezes her arms around me. âNope.â
Z shrugs. âNone of us are slouches. Fuck, I was working for my dadâs landscaping company when I was shorter than the fucking mowers he had me pushing.â
âJeez, really?â Hope asks with wide eyes. I know Rockâs told me she had it tough growing up too, but sometimes she really does give off a pampered princess vibe.
âFuck, yeah,â Z answers. He opens his mouth to say something else, then shakes his head.
Hope hums an affirmative sound and by the way her eyelids keep drooping, it seems all the wrench talk is about to put her to sleep.
âWanna go upstairs, Hope?â I ask.
âNo, I like listening to you guys. Keep talking.â
Across the table, Zâs watching her doze off with a smile on his face. In my lap, Trinityâs half-asleep herself.
When it looks like the girls are out, I lift my chin at Murphy. âEverything okay on your rounds?â
âYeah. All good. Z changed the code for the front gate too, so we gotta let the others know.â
âOkay.â
Teller glances at Hope, then me. âHowâd it go today?â
âIt fucking sucked. Why do you think Iâm down here at three a.m. downing a bottle of scotch and sheâs high as a fuckinâ kite?â
âSorry,â Teller mutters.
Jesus, I actually feel bad for snapping at Teller. âNo. Itâs justâhe said everythingâs fine. But I know Rock. He wouldnât say if there was a problem in front of Hope. I hate him being unprotected in there. He can handle himself. But guards fuck with him, there ainât a lot he can do but take it right now.â
Hope sort of moans in her sleep, and Z puts his finger to his lips. âWatch what you say, brother,â he warns me.
Normally, Iâd flip him off, but heâs right. Like the girl doesnât have enough awful shit in her head right now.
Teller stands and stretches. âI fuckinâ hate this. I want to do something for him, but I donât know what.â
âYou are, just by helping out,â Z says. He tips his head toward Hope. âWe all know keeping her safeâs his biggest concern, so when she starts giving us shit for escorting her everywhere, use your Teller charm on her, okay?â
Teller grins. âThat only works on chicks I wanna fuck. Sheâs like a big sister.â He fake-shivers âGross.â
Z shakes his head at him. âYouâre an ass.â
âIâm gonna start my rounds, unless you guys need me here?â
âNah, go ahead,â I say.
Murphy lifts his chin. âI wonât be able to sleep for a while, Iâll go with you, T.â
âYeah, okay.â
âWake Ravage when you get back. His lazy ass needs to do a few rounds too,â I remind them on their way to the front door.
âYou got it,â Murphy calls out.
Glancing down, I brush a few strands of hair off Trinâs face. Sheâs so still, I almost want to shake her. Only her soft warm breath drifting over my skin stops me.
âShe okay?â Z asks.
âYeah. She wanted to see Rock too, but I didnât know how to pull it off, ya know?â
âMaybe Hope can take her down one day. One of us will wait outside.â
âYeah, maybe.â Honestly, Iâm not sure itâs a good idea. Donât want Trinity visiting Rock in jail to stir up bad memories about her dadâs time inside. Last thing my girl needs.
Taking another look at Hope, she looks awfully uncomfortable with her head thrown back against the chair at a weird angle. âMaybe we should lay her out on the couch?â
Z shrugs. âIâll take her upstairs.â
âOkay,â I answer.
Now, if Rock were here, heâd whap Z upside the head with his caveman club. But he ainât here and weâre all just trying to take care of each other best we can.
Iâm surprised to be in my own bed the next morning. It takes me a few minutes to orient myself since I donât remember coming upstairs last night. For the first time in a couple days, a small smile tugs at the corners of my mouth. Listening to the guysâ stories last night somehow made me feel closer to Rock. Even if today Iâm forced to wake up alone. I enjoyed hearing all the good things heâs done for the people he considers his family.
Once we figured out which jail Rock was being held atâand oh my God, I still can not believe Rockâs in jailâI memorized the visitorâs schedule. Even attorneys are only allowed to go in at certain times. I know if I go too often the guards will be suspicious. And of course, Glassman does actually need to meet with Rock. So today, Iâm not allowed to go.
And I hate it.
I canât stand not being able to send him texts to see what heâs up to. Every time I try to picture him or wonder what heâs doing, all I see is that horrid orange jumpsuit and handcuffs. All I think about is how much he hates being caged up and how awful it must be for him to have no say over anything.
Good grief. If I donât get up and get dressed, Iâll end up crawling under the covers and crying myself into a coma. Nope. I need to be strong. I told Glassman Iâd do some research on bail hearings and research whether we need to appeal the decision to a higher court. I plan to head to Adamâs office after breakfast and wonder which lucky brother will tag along.
As Iâm leaving our room, I bump into Z. âHow you feeling today, sugar?â he asks as he walks down the hall with me.
âOkay. Are you responsible for putting me to bed?â
I swear Z seems flustered by my question. âYeah. I didnât want to leave you downstairs.â
âThanks. Iâm sorry, I conked out like that.â
âYou had a rough day.â
âItâs been a rough week.â
âI hear that.â
At the top of the stairs Z stops me with a hand on my arm. âDo you remember our conversation last night?â
âWhich one? We had a lot of them.â
âAbout club life and stuff.â
I thought all we discussed was club life, but Z must see it a little different. âYeah,â I answer slowly.
He glances away but still manages to maintain his signature cockiness. âDonât laugh. Do you think Lilly would accept this stuff the way you have?â
My hand flies to my chest and I stop the âawwwwâ coming out of my mouth just in time. I sense Z asking me this took some courage and I donât want to squelch it. âI donât know, honestly. If youâd asked her if I could accept this life a few years ago, Iâm sure she would have told you hell no.â
The corners of his mouth curl into a smirk. âGood point.â
âWait a second. Are you talking about the whole having a wife and still banging other chicks thing?â
Z laughs so hard, he clutches his stomach. When he finally settles down he shakes his head. âNo. I think I could commit to just her, if sheâd take me seriously.â
Okay, this time I canât stop the awwww. âZ, thatâs so sweet that youâd stop sticking your dick in every chick you meet for my friend.â
He chuckles again. âThat sounds like something Rock would say.â
âHe has been a good influence on me.â
âSeriously, youâve known her a long time, right?â
âYes. Iâm, or I was, closer to Sophie, but Iâve spent a lot of time with Lilly.â
âWell, what does she want?â
r /> âHonestly? Iâve only ever seen her seriously date older men with money. Which is weird because she always makes a big fuss to her family about supporting herself.â
âYeah, Iâve gotten that impression,â he says dryly.
âYou know she comes from a strict Russian-Italian family, right?â
âYeah, Iâm familiar with the type.â
This is news to me. Except for the tiny bit he revealed last night, I donât know a whole heck of a lot about Zâs background. I donât know why I feel guilty about that, since none of the guys are really forthcoming about their pasts. Unless theyâre drunk or high. âDonât take this the wrong way, but her parents might not be happy about her bringing a tattooed, badass biker home for Sunday dinners.â
Not at all insulted, Z grins. âYeah, I met her brother once. He wasnât a fan.â
Alex has never been anything but nice to me. Then again, I donât want to bang his sister.
We finally make it downstairs and itâs killing me, so I have to ask. âWhat is it about Lilly? You donât seem like youâd have a lot in common.â
Once again, thankfully, heâs not insulted. âBesides the obvious?â
âHer boobs, yeah I know,â I mutter, glancing down at my own rack.
âDonât worry, yours are two thumbs up too, Hope.â
âGee, thanks.â
He stops me with a hand on my shoulder before we enter the dining room. âI just like her. Sheâs smart and fun to talk to. We come from similar families. Although, I donât think sheâd ever be a traditional wife.â
âIs that what you want?â
âKind of.â
Iâm so confused, because Z could have his pick of any club girl here who would probably be thrilled to stay home and tend to his every whimâwhich is what he seems to be implying. Why on earth he thinks a career driven woman like Lilly is a good match, I have no idea.
âIâd let her keep working if thatâs what she wanted,â he adds.
âHow nice of you,â I mutter.
Instead of smirking, he frowns. âI can actually have a conversation with her.â
Murphy chooses that moment join our conversation. âSince when do you talk to chicks?â
