Izzard strolls up and taps his baton against the bars of my cell. Such a bad-guard cliché. Iâm offended by his lack of originality.
âHeard you had some hot piece-of-ass lawyer visit you today, North.â
I donât respond or react in any way. Not too long ago, I would have attempted to choke him through the bars for talking âbout my woman like that. But I like to think Iâve grown older and wiser over the years.
âFunny, I think I ran into her when she was leaving. Had some big, blond dude all over her. Swear it looked like one of the guys in your crew, but that canât be right. She signed him in as her assistant.â
He knows.
Fuck. The last thing Hope needs is to get in trouble. Because of our âgang associationâ Wrath probably wouldnât be allowed in to visit with me. To avoid that possibility, we decided he should come in with Hope as her assistant. They wouldnât dig as deep if he came in with a lawyer. Especially one who appeared as innocent as Hope. Weâve worked that angle with Glassman in the past. Now Iâm rethinking the whole thing as far as Hope is concerned. Except, I canât let her run around unprotected. And I know it will hurt her if I tell her not to come visit me.
âGuy looked more like her boyfriend the way he had his hands all over her.â
That finally gets my attention and I flick my gaze in Lizardâs direction. Not for the reasons heâs thinking though.
I trust Wrath with my life.
I trust Hope more than I trust anyone.
No fucking way is anything going on between them. Itâs not even a question in my mind.
The more likely scenario is that after seeing me in hereâin my spiffy orange jumpsuit, and isnât that just some sort of full-circle irony bullshitâand putting on such a brave face for my benefit, she fucking lost her shit the minute they stepped outside.
I fuckinâ hate that I did that to her.
âThey finally moved their make-out session to his truck. Tinted windowsâcouldnât see much.â
I contemplate the wisdom of asking Lizard if his son should grow up without a father. See, Iâve done my research on the asshole.
But Iâm really not in the mood to take a beating right now. My ribs are still sore from the âconversationâ I had with this asshole yesterday. Inside these walls, my options are limited. I fight back, Iâll get time added or worse.
And I have a wedding I plan to be at in a few short months.
CHAPTER ELEVEN
Another night and no sleep. Every time I close my eyes, shiny metal wrapped around Rockâs wrists is all I see.
Wrath told me the guys are taking shifts patrolling the property. Keeping an eye on things.
I donât plan to go far when I open our door and step into the hallway. My bare feet make no sound as I creep down the hallway. At the top of the stairs, I catch the glow from the war room. Worried, somethingâs wrong, I hurry down the stairs.
Wrathâs in the war room by himself. In his chair. Staring at a stack of photographs. Nursing what looks like the bottle of scotch I bought Rock for his birthday.
âYou can come in, Hope,â he says without turning around.
âHowâd you know it was me?â
âMy job.â
He still hasnât turned around, so I walk around the table until Iâm facing him. He points to Rockâs chair. âSit.â
âWhatâs wrong?â he asks after I settle in to the big, leather âthrone.â
âI canât sleep.â
âYeah. Rough day.â
âYou?â I ask.
âSame.â
I point to the bottle. âAre you drinking Rockâs scotch?â
âYeahhhp. Whiskey wasnât cuttinâ it.â He half-smiles and taps the bottle, making a muted clinking sound. âLast time we drank this together was the night he told me he was gonna marry you.â
âReally?â
âMmmhhmmm.â
I nod at the photos. âWhatâs that?â
He picks up the one on top of the stack and tosses in my direction. âAncient history.â
âOh my gosh, is thatââ
âYup.â
The photoâs of a much-younger Rock, Wrath, Z and a guy I donât recognize.
âYouâre all so baby-faced and un-inked.â
He snorts at my observation.
âWhoâs the fourth guy?â
âLucky.â
âWhoââ
âUnluckiest bastard ever. Thatâs how he got his road name.â He tips his head down and meets my eyes. âRockâs never mentioned him?â
âNo,â I whisper. The air pulses around me heavy with whateverâs on Wrathâs mind tonight.
âThey were friends when I met Rock. Hell, Luckyâs probably the one who brought Rock to one of my fights.â
I keep quiet because, except for bits and pieces this is the most Iâve heard about their shared past in a long time.
âWhen Rock found out I had nowhere to live, he invited me to stay with him. Granted, he wanted me to teach him how to fight. Didnât mean he had to give me a place to stay.â
âWere he and Lucky roommates?â
âNah. Rock doesnât share space well.â He snorts. âFound that out after I moved in.â He snickers at some private memory and I try to picture what they must have been like back then.
His face darkens and he takes another sip of scotch. âRock got blamed for Luckyâs death too,â he says after a few minutes.
âLandon Michaels,â I whisper.
Wrath sits up straighter. âHowââ
âI had Rockâs rap sheet when I represented him. Manslaughter. I always thought he must have been a rival, or it was an accidentâ¦I never asked for detailsâ¦â
âIt was no accident. And he was no rival. Our greedy fuck ex-president was responsible. Rock and Grinder went to prison for it.â
âWhoâs Grinder?â
âRockâs mentor. He was the SAA.â
âWhereâs he?â
âPrison.â
âOh. Rock never mentions him.â
âItâsâ¦awkward. He went to see him not long ago.â He waves his hand in the air. âWhen you two were on a break.â
âOh.â Iâve got so many more questions. But Wrath seems to be getting agitated, so I wait to see if heâll speak again.
âClubâs supposed to be a brotherhood. All seen each other at our worst. Doing our worst. Need to know they can keep their mouths shut. Have to be able to trust your brothers with your life. Literally.â
âAnd you couldnât do that before?â
âNo. This brotherhoodâs supposed to be about giving your brother half of what you have if he needs it. Rugerâthat was the old prezâcared way more about lining his own fucking pockets.â
Wow. The way he explains it makes me understand the guysâ attitudesâthe way theyâre always eager to help each other out, no matter whatâso much better.
âGrinder wanted to change that. Thatâs what attracted guys like him to this in the first place.â
âRock too, obviously.â
âYup. Brothers should always have each otherâs backs. Doesnât matter why. Doesnât matter if heâs wrong, you defend him anyway.â
âIâm surprised Ruger let Rock back in the club when he got out?â
âHe didnât have a choice. Rock never lost his place here. Itâs the risk we all take. Club members suck it up and do their time. No bitching. No snitching. Thatâs how it is. Everyone knew he didnât have shit to do with Luckyâs death.â
âWhat did you and Z do while he was away?â
âBided our time and gathered information. Well, Teller and Murphy gathered information. Ruger just assumed they were dumb kids and he could mold them the way he wanted. But those two have never been stupid. They knew what their futures looked like if Ruger stayed in.â
He glances down and flips through a bunch of photos, then flings one to me.
âOh my. Oh my God! Is that Murphy?â
âYup. Chubby little bastard
, wasnât he?â
âAw, heâs so cute. Heâs so baby-faced.â Dear God, Murphyâs been part of the club in one way or another since he was a kid.
The next one he tosses to me has to be of Murphy and Teller.
âWhere were these?â
âIn Rockâs cabinet.â Wrath pulls out a set of keys from his pocket and dangles them in front of me. Rockâs keys. I raise an eyebrow at him.
He lifts his shoulder. âHe can kick my ass when he gets out if he wants.â
The sound of the front door opening has me jumping out of my chair, but Wrath motions at me to sit back down. As I do, we hear someone punching the alarm code into the keypad.
Z pokes his head in the door and lifts his chin at me. âEverything okay?â
Correction, shirtless Z is in the doorway. He saunters in, rounds the table, patting me on the shoulder as he passes and drops into his seat.
âChrist, brother, put your fuckinâ shirt on,â Wrath mutters.
âFucking hot out, dick.â
âEverything okay?â I ask.
âYup. Didnât see a single bear.â
âWhat are you talking about? Thereâs no bears up here.â
âUh, yeah there are, Hope.â
âJeez.â
The two of them laugh at me. Jerks.
âAnyway, Murphyâs finishing up his round. What are you two up to?â
I hand over one of the photos Wrath gave me earlier. Z cracks up. âJesus. Where did you find these?â
âRockâs locker,â Wrath answers.
Z nods as if that doesnât surprise him.
âSo, Wrath must be in the mellow reminiscing stage of drunkenness. Donât let him drink much more, heâs a nasty drunk, Hope.â
âFuck you.â
âSee?â Z snickers. He pushes out of the chair and jogs out into the common area.
Wrath holds the scotch out to me. âWant?â
âNo, thanks.â
He leans back in his chair, stretching his impossibly long body, to reach for a small refrigerator against the wall, and pulls out a bottle of water to hand me.
âThanks,â I say as I uncap it.
Z returnsâcompletely dressedâcarrying a small box.
âWrath says youâre a pro at this,â Z teases as he rolls a joint and lights it.
âAt rolling it or smoking it? Both are lies.â
Wrath and Z both laugh at that.
Z rolls a second joint and hands it over. âI think youâve earned your own.â
âNo kidding,â I say through a mouthful of giggles.
Weâre quiet until I choke on a lungful of smoke.
Once I can breathe again, Z leans forward. âCan I ask you something, Hope?â
âOf course.â
âThat video you were sent. How come you were so positive it was old? It wasnât even a question in your mind.â
A glance at Wrath shows heâs interested in the answer too and my cheeks heat up under their scrutiny.
âI know him. Even before we were together I understood fidelity meant something to him.â I inhale longer than necessary so I can think over how to explain it in a way that might make sense. When my lungs are screaming, I blow the smoke out and answer his question. âHe told me what he did after my husband passed away. I donât know what the point of that would have been if he planned to cheat on me.â
Wrath nods, but Z bursts with laughter. âHe told you about his year of monkhood? Holy shit. We all thought he lost his fuckinâ mind.â
âHe was gone over you from the day you met,â Wrath says.
âI know,â I answer quietly.
âDo you understand how rare that is in our world, Hope?â Z asks.
âWhat? A year without sex?â
He snorts. âYeah, that too. No, committing to one woman. Thatâs sort of the appeal of all of this.â He throws his arms up in the air, indicating the whole clubhouse. âThe free and easy sex.â
âSo Iâve gathered,â I answer while rolling my eyes.
Wrathâs watching Z closely and Iâm not sure if he knows where his brotherâs going with this conversation. If he figures it out, I hope he clues me in.
âA lot of guys in the life will have a citizen wife, outside the MC. Never has anything to do with the club. Then heâll have an old lady or whatever muffler bunnies at the club.â
Yuck. âSo? Lots of men have mistresses on the side.â
Z shakes his head. âItâs different.â
âWhatâs your point?â
âDo I need to have one?â
âI think the deviantâs point is that Rock really loves you,â Trinity says from the doorway.
Z picks his head up and grins. âExactly. Thank you, Trinity.â
She steps in the room, shaking her head. âWhat are you guys all doing up so late?â
Wrath holds his hand out to her. As she comes closer, she takes it and he yanks her into his lap. âWhy you up, angel?â
âI woke up, and you werenât there,â she says softly.
He skims the back of his hand over her cheek. âSorry.â
Theyâre so sweet together, my chest aches.
âAnyway, our old prez was one of the wife and mistress types. I think it always disgusted Rock,â Z says.
âHe doesnât really seem like he would interfere if thatâs what the guys want to do,â I say.
Wrath shakes his head. âNo. He wouldnât. Itâs not his place.â
âYou said you grew up in a club, Trinity. Was it like that?â I ask.
âWorse,â is all she says.
Wrath tightens his hold on her.
âCarla cut him deep when she split while he was doing time,â Z says.
âI know. When I met her down at Swayâs place, she told me it was because she was scared.â
Z and Wrath share a look. âClub was in a different place back then. As much as I hate to defend that skank, the club wouldnât have protected her,â Wrath elaborates.
âBecause she was already running around on him, or because of something else?â I ask.
âBecause our old prez wouldnât have given two shits about someoneâs bitch. She would have had to earn her keep some other way,â Wrath clarifies.
âHuh.â
âIâm glad I met you guys after,â Trinity says softly.
Wrath scowls at the table but doesnât answer.
Trinity turns to me. âThe three of them were something else. I must have met you guys right after you got voted in.â
Z and Wrath stare at each other briefly. âYeah, right after,â Z says slowly.
âFirst thing I did was tease them about how clean their patches were.â
âYes, she did,â Z agrees affectionately.
âThen she blew me off,â Wrath says with a smile.
âNo, I didnât.â
âOh, thatâs right. She tricked me into giving her a ride,â Wrath says with the first genuine smile Iâve seen all night.
Trinity laughs. âI hadnât been on a bike since I left home. I just wanted a ride.â She glances at Wrath. âI got one.â
Wrath squeezes her hip and kisses her cheek. âYeah you did,â he whispers in her ear.
Iâm curious because itâs not until recently that they seem to have made up. âRock said it was partially his fault you guys didnât stay togetherâ¦â I prod.
âOh, thatâs not fair,â Trinity says.
Wrath rolls his eyes. âHe should have told me,â he murmurs just loud enough for me to hear.
âThatâs not fair,â Trinity protests again. âI begged him not to. Especially you.â
Wrath growls and finishes his scotch. âAncient history, babe. Forward not backward, right?â
She presses a kiss to his cheek. âRight.â
Z glances over at me with a mixture of guilt and curiosity. âThey both should have said something to someone,â he says. Trinity and Wrath both stare at him and I decide itâs a good time to keep my mouth shut.
&n
bsp; âAnyway,â Trinity says. âRock was nice. Didnât talk to me like I was a T-bone steak.â
Z throws his hand over his heart. âI was nice to you.â
âTrue.â She turns my way. âThen, I had some trouble and Wrath was out of town, so I called Rockââ
âStill wish youâd called me,â Wrath growls.
Trinityâs hand brushes his cheek. âI know. But you were gone. Anyway. I called Rock. I donât know what he was doingââ
âProbably getting head,â Z interrupts.
All three of us scowl at him.
âSorry,â he says to me.
âAnyway, he didnât hesitate. He brought Dex and Teller and they got me the hell out of there. He gave me protection and shelter. Not many guys in this world, if any, would do that for some chick they barely knew. He could have... you know, said, sure weâll protect you if you blow me, but he never did. Instead, he told me to stay here. He didnât know me fromââ
âRockâs always been able to read people well,â Z says.
âWhy you smoking up without me, bro?â Murphy calls out, then enters the war room. âOh, hey. Youâre all up.â
He takes the seat next to Z and grabs the joint from him. I hand Z mine. âIâm done.â
Z flips one of the photographs to Murphy, who snorts. âJesus Christ, whyâd you show her this?â
âSo she could see what a chubby little fuck you were until we got our hands on you,â Wrath says.
âDude, that sounds so gay,â Murphy snaps back. âI was husky,â Murphy says with false-indignation. âNot chubby.â Murphy looks me in the eye. âI had to be resourceful. My mom was a fuckinâ crackwhore, so I used to get all the neighborhood ladies to feed me.â
âObviously you made out well,â Z says with a snicker.
âFuck yeah, I did. Even Tellerâs grandmother would have me over for dinner, until we got in deeper with the club.â
âWhat were you, bro, like twelve when you started cominâ around the old clubhouse?â Wrath asks.
âI dunno. Probably.â
âHe used to follow Teller down on his little huffy,â Z explains, while miming riding a bike.
Instead of being insulted, Murphy seems to enjoy when the guys pick on him.
âRock saw his potential right away.â Wrath points at Murphy. âLittle fuckerâs always been talented with a wrench. He could fix anything you put in front of him.â
