âOkay. Was it Viper?â
âRight now theyâre saying it was some hang-a-round.â
She seems to think that over. âThat makes more sense. Probably thought taking me would help him get his prospect rocker.â
âYeah, well the fucker better have come up with that on his own.â
My legâs aching like a bitch on our way downstairs, but I gotta push the pain down and focus.
Rock, Z and I ride together.
Murphy, Bull, and Ravage stay right behind us the entire way. We left our cuts at home. Fuckinâ hate entering Ironworks. âWas that Trinityâs last class?â Z asks from the backseat.
âYeah.â
âGood timing.â
No shit. No fuckinâ way is she coming near Ironworks again. She needs more art classes, Iâll send her anywhere else she wants to go.
The Viperâs clubhouse looks like a fuckinâ crack den. Itâs right on Second Avenue in whatâs known as South Ironworks. South of Satanâs toilet is more accurate.
If the eight-foot chain link fence doesnât scream gangster hideout, the four pit bulls who attack the fence when we get out of our vehicles certainly do. The two houses on either side have blacked-out windows and some strange ventilation choices.
Z catches my eye and subtly tilts his head at the four different video cameras facing the street.
The stench of cat piss permeates the entire area.
We wait on the sidewalk for someone to come get us. Itâs a respect thing. Walking up and ringing their doorbell would not be respectful.
âGuess theyâve moved their cooking in-house,â I mutter to Rock.
He nods once.
How they feel comfortable having their operation in plain sight smack in the middle of Ironworks, is beyond me. Ironworks PD must be shadier or lazier than I thought.
Murphy, Bull and Ravage stand behind us but move farther back when Ransom himself comes out to meet us.
He shakes Rockâs hand. âI ainât even gonna check you for weapons. This is how much I want to make it clear weâre not tryinâ to start trouble.â
âAppreciate it,â Rock answers.
Ransom motions for us to follow. I slip on a pair of leather gloves as I walk behind Rock. Now the inside is surprisingly nice and clean, considering what outside looks like. The usual half-naked chicks are running around. Whatâs unusual is how many of them look underage.
I know thatâs not why weâre here, but it pisses me off anyway.
Ransom gets right down to business and takes us downstairs into their basement. âMurder roomâ is a better description. Itâs been outfitted with epoxy-coated cement and large drainage holes for easy wash downs. Hooks and eye-bolts to house multiple âguests.â The current guest is tied to a chair thatâs bolted to the floor.
âEduardo, say hello to our friends,â Ransom prods the barely breathing prisoner.
âYou got a âbeforeâ picture, we can send to our girl to I.D. him?â Rock asks. âDonât know if sheâll recognize him in this condition.â
Ransom grins and pulls something out of his pocket. Next to me, Z tenses up, but otherwise doesnât move. âRecognize this?â Ransom asks, holding out a bloody knife.
Rock motions for me to take it. I recognize it right away. âYeah, thatâs hers.â
âWe took it out of his leg,â Ransom says, pointing to the guyâs bloody pants. Heâs got a hole in the upper thigh that fits what Trinity described.
I nod at Rock.
Ransom kicks the chair. âSit up,â he barks as he pushes the guy forward. âNo ink. He ainât Viper.â
Well, heâs got ink. But not the back piece every patched-in Viper sports. Ransom texts a âbeforeâ photo to me and I send it to Trin.
Walking up to the guy, I kick his leg. âYou touch my girl?â
âDidnât knowâ¦â he trails off.
âEduardo, right?â Ransom nods at me. âI know thatâs not true. You told her you recognized her from the fight a couple months back.â
Heâs got no answer. He does piss himself. Geez. Here Iâve been so calm and mild-mannered.
Trin replies to me.
Iâm pretty sure thatâs him.
âSheâs not one hundred percent,â I tell Rock. My gaze shifts to Ransom. âShe didnât stop to get a good look, with her being attacked and all.â
He holds up his hands. âI understand. Iâll wait outside if you want to question him.â
Ransom steps out. I donât think for a second weâre not being monitored.
Crouching down, I poke at Eduardo until he meets my eyes. âSomeone put you up to it?â
He shakes his head then jerks it toward the door. âMary.â
âWhat?â
âMary-ella.â
I glance at Rock. âWho the fuck is that?â
âHow would I know?â
âMy girlâs name is Trinity. The blonde. Whyâd you go after her?â
He shakes and drools.
âHeâs fuckinâ useless, Rock,â Z mutters.
Rock settles his hand on my shoulder. âYou good?â
âNo. But thereâs not much more to be done here. Thereâs no justice in killing a half-dead fucker who canât defend himself.â Iâm still not entirely sure this pathetic fuck had anything to do with Trinityâs attack. I may be a thug, but even I wonât cross certain lines.
He shakes his head. Before we make another move, Ransom and his sergeant-at-arms, Killa, pop back in the room.
Ransom raises his eyebrows at us.
âWeâre good.â Good as weâre going to be considering these assholes robbed me of the payback Iâd been looking for.
He smiles as if this isnât a fucking disgusting, shitty situation and nods at Rock. âCan we talk business before you go?â
âSure.â Rock sounds neutral, but I know him well enough to know heâd rather do anything but.
He leads us upstairs. Rock steps into the living room and a girl whoâs eighteen if sheâs a fuckinâ day takes one look at us, lets out a short scream, and runs into the kitchen.
âFinish it,â Ransom says behind us. Few seconds later, thereâs a muffled shot from the basement.
At least thatâs one less body on my conscience. Iâm still not convinced this wasnât some sort of initiation suggested by Ransom or one of his officers. Iâll happily wipe each one of them off the face of the planet. Eduardo got the idea that shit was okay from somewhere.
âYou can call your other guys in, Rock,â Ransom suggests. Yeah, just what we need.
Ransom and Rock sit down together at the kitchen table. I take up the space behind Rockâs back and keep my eye on the room. Killa stands behind Ransom and keeps his eyes on our crew.
Iâm not insulted. Iâm doing the same.
âI got customers who want some green, but I canât touch any in this area,â Ransom starts off. He doesnât fuck around with small talk, something I know Rock appreciates.
âGSC wonât sell to you?â
Ransom snorts. âNot without a hefty mark-up.â
Rock glances over at Z, who took up the seat to Rockâs left, before answering. âIâll be honest, weâre tapped out right now. How much are you looking for and how often?â
Ransom names an absurd amount and Rock immediately shakes his head. âWe can do maybe a quarter of that, but not for three to four months.â Rock holds up his hand. âAnd that wouldnât change our agreement. No fuckinâ meth in Empire.â
Ransom shrugs. âThere ainât much of a market for it anymore, anyway.â
Normally Iâd say thatâs good news. Except Ransomâs lying through his teeth. The two meth labs heâs got set up on either side of this building suggest business is booming.
âThereâs no decent clubs left in the area, you know,â Ransom says. I guess weâve moved on to his other topic of conversation. âI got two girls whoâd like to work a Crystal Ballââ
âOpen a club out here.â Rock says, cutting that idea off.
âYou know everyone crosses the bridge for that shit.â
Rock shrugs. âOpen one closer to Vermont.â
âGot no juice for zoning.â
âWhat do you want me to say? Last time your girls worked there, they were turning tricks. That shit doesnât go on in our club.â
Ransomâs face doesnât change much, but heâs clearly pissed. âFirst, that was under our old leadership. Second, you know damn well that shit goes on all the time.â
âAny of our girls get caught, they get canned. I donât need Vice sticking their nose in our business. Same for drugs.â
Ransom cocks his head like he thinks Rockâs full of shit.
Z pipes up. âWe just did extensive drug-testing and fired a bunch of people.â
âMy girls are clean. Iâll send them for whatever tests you want.â
Rock turns to Z. âWe need any new girls?â
Z shrugs. âWe can always use fresh talent.â
âYour girls dancinâ âcause they want to or you forcing them to?â Rockâs tone borders on disrespectful and Killa raises an eyebrow.
Donât even think about it, cocksucker.
Ransom doesnât seem to care one way or another. âGabbyâs got a kid to support. Her olâ manâs locked up.â Club should be supportinâ her and the kid if heâs locked up over something he did for them, but whatever. No one asked for my opinion.
âMariella just wants to save up for a BMW,â Ransom says with a chuckle.
Mariella. None of us show it, but I know each one of us reacted to hearing the name.
âYou sure youâre okay with that, Rock?â Z asks when weâre back on the road.
âNo, Iâm not fuckinâ all right with it. Iâm trying to keep the fuckinâ peace, though. We keep callinâ him a liar ainât helpful.â Rock stops his rant long enough to glance at Z in the rear view. âYou okay with it? Youâre the one whoâs gonna have to keep an eye on them.â This is Rockâs not-so-subtle way of telling Z heâs not spending any more time at CB than he needs to.
âYeah. Only giving them one or two afternoon shifts. I ainât bumping our regular girls to make room for these two.â
Rock inclines his head my way. âYou satisfied with how this went down?â
âNo. Not at all. Somethingâs off about the whole thing. The way he already had the guy beat half to death. The way he was all prepared to talk business after.â I shake my head. âFeel like we got lured down here and bent over. Sure as fuck not happy about letting their girls in our club. You know if Loco gets wind of us selling our weed to Vipers, heâll go ballistic.â
Rock sighs and grips the steering wheel tighter. âYouâre right on all counts. We need more bodies. Bull and Steer said theyâd both stick around for the week and help out at CB, but I canât see Sway lettinâ two of his officers hang here indefinitely.â
âCall some nomads in. Iron Jimâs had interest for a while now,â I suggest. Heâs a scary fuck. Perfect to station down at CB.
âYeah, okay.â
Zâs phone buzzes and he taps me on the shoulder. âTrinâs patch wonât be ready for two weeks.â
I turn and face him. âAre you fuckinâ kidding me?â Havenât I waited long enough?
âNo. Patty had a heart attack. Her daughter came up to take over the shop, but sheâs backed up.â
âYeah, well why donât you take your pretty-boy face down there and charm her into moving your favorite brother to the top of her list?â
He screws his face into mock-disgust. âHave you seen Pattyâs daughter?â
âNo.â
âFor you and Trin, Iâll take the hit,â he says, shaking his head.
âThanks.â
He gets another text and chuckles. âHey, Bronze is renting a chair at Dirtyâs place for a bit.â
Rock raises an eyebrow. âOh yeah?â
âThat who tatted Hopeâs name on you?â I ask.
Rock lifts the corner of his mouth in a smirk. âZ just canât keep his mouth shut, can he?â
From the back, Z snickers.
âI think his feelings are just hurt, prez. He always thought youâd ink his name on you first.â
Not at all insulted, Z laughs even harder.
âWhenâs he gettinâ into town?â I ask Z.
âSays heâs already here. Looking to set up appointments this week if we know of anyone.â
Perfect timing.
At least I heard from Wrath once, so I know heâs okay.
Of course it was to identify my attacker. Iâm still upset that I couldnât be one hundred percent sure.
âAre you okay?â Hope asks for the tenth time.
âYeah,â I answer because I know sheâs scared out of her mind. She checks her phone, probably upset she hasnât heard from Rock.
âHe wonât text you while theyâre handling this, Hope. Heâs probably got a burner on him.â
She seems confused. Isnât she a lawyer? âIf they ever got arrested, he wouldnât want the cops to make the connection to you so easily,â I explain.
âOh.â
She looks like sheâs going to be sick.
I hold up the little flip phone in my hand. âBurner to burner,â I explain.
âOh,â she says again.
A little later I get another text.
On our way home.
Thank God.
The guys are either weary or fired-up when they return. No oneâs covered in blood, so I take that as a positive sign. Rock squeezes my shoulder and nods at me before taking Hope upstairs.
None of us explained the situation to Heidi, so sheâs not sure what to make of all the guys storming in. We havenât had a semi-lockdown situation like this since she was a kid and I doubt she remembers much of it. Sheâs in Axelâs lap, talking, when Murphy comes in. She glances up and waves hello.
My attention is drawn to Wrath and I immediately get up and run to him.
He catches me, and lifts me into his arms. âYou okay, angel?â
âBetter now.â
He presses a kiss to my lips. Quick, but full of affection. âRock go upstairs?â
âYup.â
âWeâre gonna have church later when the CB guys return.â
âOkay. Need me to do anything?â
âNo, baby.â His gaze strays to somewhere behind me and I turn to see Muphy talking quietly with Heidi and Axel. He seems to be behaving himself and I wonder if this is part of the working things out he mentioned the night of the bonfire.
âYou got plans this week?â Wrath asks as we walk down to our room.
âNothing special. Some things I need to do around hereâ¦why?â
He leans against the wall while I open the door, and follows me inside. âJust want to take you somewhere.â
âOkay.â
Wrathâs on some sort of mission. He keeps talking, but heâs stripping me out of my clothes at the same time. Then heâs stripping off his own clothes and leading us into the shower.
He leans down and nips my ear. âMiss me?â
Shivers ripple over my skin. Both from desire and all the fear I felt earlier. âYes.â
âWorried?â
âVery.â
He straightens up, finishes washing me and hands me the shower gel. âI think things are okay for now. I still donât want you running around alone or unarmed. Prospects know theyâre supposed to keep an eye on you and Hope. Think you can talk to her, so sheâs not giving them a hard time?â
âYeah, of course.â
He turns and I take my time washing his back, digging my fingers into his tight muscles, admiring every inch of him.
âYour ass is a perfect blank canvas, if you ever want to get my name tatted on it,â I tease, giving him a soft smack.
He laughs and turns, snapping off the water. Yanking me against him, he stares down into my face. âFunny you should mention that.â
Clean Ink is exactly as the name implies. Sterile. Itâs funny because the owner has been called
Dirty for longer than Iâve known him. This is where I take Trinity Tuesday afternoon as a surprise.
She glances at the parlor and smirks. âWho are we here for, you or me?â
âBoth.â
âOh, really?â
âYup.â
âDo I get a say in this?â
That stops me. âYou said you wanted to get my star on you.â
âOh.â Her face softens. âYou really meant that?â
âOf course I did.â Reaching out, I tickle her side. âExcept now Iâm thinking instead of your hip, maybe on your forehead.â
She slaps my hand away. âI love you, but thatâs definitely not happening.â
Fuck. I grab her around the waist and haul her against me. âSay it again.â
âWhat?â Her eyes search my face for a second, then her fingers trace my cheek. âI love you, Wyatt.â
Weâre standing on the sidewalk in the middle of downtown Empire in broad daylight. I still need to kiss her long and hard.
Bells jingle and something bangs into my leg, breaking our kiss. âOw.â
âShit, sorry.â The guy looks up. âWrath? The fuck, man? You coming in or not?â
âHey, Bronze.â Trinity slides out of my grasp and takes my hand. We follow Bronze inside. The place is empty except for us.
âWhereâs Dirty?â
âVegas.â
We take a minute to catch up before I pull out the drawings I brought.
Trinity frowns at the two pieces of paper. âI only agreed to one,â she says with a teasing smile.
âThe otherâs mine.â
She raises an eyebrow. âI was only joking. I donât want you to get my name on your ass.â
Bronze breaks out laughing. âThank God. I donât need to see his pasty white ass.â
I hand her the drawing.
Her breath catches as she stares at it. âA Triquetra?â
âYeah. A Trinity Knot. For our past, present, and future.â
âOh, wow.â She looks around and finally drops into a chair.
âTrin, you okay?â
âYeah. I justâyou sure?â
âFuck, yeah.â
Bronze is staring at us a little too intently.
âGive us a minute.â Crouching down in front of Trinity, I take her hands in mine. âYou okay?â
