“What’s important for Crystal, essential for her, is that you’re okay. So cut yourself some slack, and do as Paulette said. Get your rest and you can try again. But you can’t take care of Crystal if you’re run down,” he said.

“I know,” I said, hating to admit it. Hating that we had to have any of this conversation at all.

“Good.

“And you get out,” I said.

“I have my assignment,” he answered, giving me a smile.

“So see you in a little while?” I asked.

He gave me another soft kiss then smiled.

“Yeah,” he responded.
