Shit. Swallowing hard as I push through the doors into the cool breeze, I tuck my hand into my pocket and say, âYeah, he is.â
âDid you ask him to?â
âNo,â I say honestly. âBut when he asked, I told him when the game was.â
âSo you two are talking like that?â
Biting the inside of my cheek, I shrug, even though he canât see me. âI donât know, Jude. I donât know what to say here that isnât gonna have me watching my back from you and Jay.â
âWell, tell the truth, Jace. I donât get it. I mean, how can you want someone like that in your life?â
I shake my head. âHeâs our dad.â
; âHe was our dad,â he corrects quickly. âHe was stripped of that when he decided some whore was more important than us and his wife. When he raised a hand to our mother and then came at us. Did you forget that?â
Closing my eyes, I swallow hard. âNo.â
âThen, whatâs the problem? Are you really that spoiled that you canât care for yourself?â
âNo, I can. I am, but I feel shitty just cutting him off when he helped me out at the start of the year.â
âBut you donât feel shitty youâre hurting Mom?â
âNo, I do, Jude. Come on, man, you know I donât want to hurt anyone.â
âI do know that,â he says and then inhales. âI think thatâs what Iâm so mad about, because you donât want to hurt anyone. But the thing is, youâre gonna be the one hurt, and all of us are gonna have to watch it. I wonât tell you I told you so because there is no need, youâll know it. But, man, separate yourself now before itâs too late.â
âOkay,â I say softly, my heart pounding in my chest. âI hear you.â
âGood.â
âI should have called you and told you.â
âYou should have. But whatever, itâs fine,â he says offhandedly and shame drowns me. âJust be careful, Jace.â
âI hear you.â
âI told Jayden and he told me to handle it âcause he was worried heâd say something that really hurts you.â
âWell, thanks,â I say because I know that to be true. Jaydenâs temper is something scary, especially when it comes to my dad.
âOkay, I love you. See you tomorrow.â
âLove you, bye.â
Hanging up, I donât feel better. I know calling Jayden will probably only make me feel worse, but I dial his number anyway.
âHey,â he barks and my heart drops. Maybe I shouldnât have done this.
âListen, I know Jude told you, and I wanted to call and say Iâm sorry.â
âItâs fine, Jace. Weâll deal as a family. He doesnât matter. All that matters is watching you kick ass.â
I smile because itâs so unlike him to say that when it comes to our dad. He would rather cuss me out than say something like that. âDid Baylor tell you to say that?â
He laughs. âNo, Mom.â
