âWhen I worked on The Hill for Senator Healey. We both attended a party at the Russian embassy.â
âMy uncle throws excellent parties,â Nadia said.
âHe does. I thought you were in Boston this week, Gray?â Sara gave him the same glare his Aunt Elizabeth had used on him when heâd spent the night at Cliff House and had done something he shouldnât have. If Sara had children someday and used that glare on them, they were in serious trouble.
âSudden change in plans.â
âI can see that,â Sara said, one eyebrow raised.
âIâve been working on a new hotel project in Moscow. Nadiaâs family owns the land that we want to build on.â
Sara considered his words, and he held his breath. The way Nadia sat pressed against him looked bad. Judging by Saraâs comments and they way she glared at him, sheâd seen pictures of him and Kiera online today. Normally, Sara was great at keeping secrets, but in this case she might feel it was her responsibility to tell Kiera what sheâd seen tonight. Well, thought sheâd seen because there wasnât anything going on between Nadia and him. If not for his damn mission, he would still be with Kiera.
âI thought you handled projects in Europe mostly. Didnât you take over Trentâs position?â Sara asked.
âNormally, but since I already know Nadia, this project got passed to me.â
âFamiliarity does make working together easier sometimes. In can also complicate situations,â Sara said.
âHow long are you staying in California?â Christopher asked.
âNot long.â
âIf you have time, stop up and see us. Sara, letâs go get those drinks.â
âI need one, too. Iâll join you.â Gray moved from behind the table. âCan I get you one, Nadia?â
Nadia picked up her cocktail glass and finished the blue liquid inside. âSure. Surprise me.â
âBe right back.â
Gray walked alongside his cousin and waited until they placed their orders at the bar to speak.
âOut with it, Sara. I know what youâre thinking, but this is really only business.â
Sara leaned an elbow on the bar. âGray, why do you care what Iâm thinking? Iâm not your mother or your girlfriend. You can sleep with whoever you want.â The bartender handed Sara her drink. âKiera might care, though. She strikes me as the type who would. Maybe you should stop seeing her before you sleep with Nadia.â
âNadia and I are not sleeping together.â
âSure, youâre not. Like I said Gray, itâs not my problem.â
Gray glanced at Christopher, hoping for some help, but Christopher gave him a youâre-on-your-own look and took a sip of his drink.
âWeâre here to discuss business, Sara. I plan to leave alone.â
; âBusiness at a party like this? Wearing a dress like that? I donât think so.â Sara sipped her drink. âDonât worry, cuz. Iâll keep your secret, but consider ending things with Kiera. Sheâs not like the women you normally date. Sheâs more like me. She wonât be willing to share you with the Nadias or Nikki Reeses of the world.â
Gray didnât argue. He could stand there all day and tell Sara he wasnât messing around with Nadia and sheâd not accept it. At least sheâd promised not to say anything to Kiera. She would keep her word.
Now, if he could conclude this business meeting, heâd be on his way back to his hotel room alone. Gray picked up the two drinks heâd ordered and carried them back to the table and Nadia.
âWhat took you so long? I was getting ready to come look for you.â
That was the last thing he needed. âThe bar was busy.â He tried to keep space between them when he sat, but Nadia slid closer.
âSo your signal said there were new developments?â
