‘Yeah.’ Owen nodded carefully, as if his head still hurt.

‘Are you going straight to Aldershot now?’

‘Yeah. I’ll stop off at the shops in town for Mum’s gift.’

‘I’m finishing my shopping in the West End. Why don’t you join me?’

‘Thanks, but no. I’ve already ordered Mum’s present. I only have to collect it.’

‘What have you bought her?’

‘A book–Cross Stitch.’

‘About sewing?’

‘No, not at all.’

George frowned at Owen’s enigmatic smile. Sometimes, his friend was just way too deep.

They parted on the station concourse to go their separate ways, George to the buses and Owen to the underground.
