Ethan never talks about Polly. Itâs only by chance, when Ethan got drunk one night and droned on and on about what a terrible woman she was, that I even knew his exâs name. I open my mouth, not sure what to say, when a hand suddenly lands on Ethanâs shoulder.
âGrant, Ethan,â Alex Howard greets, looking pleased. âGood to see you both.â
I canât help but grin. Itâs been some time since I last saw Alex. Heâs been extremely busy lately, though heâs been cagey every time someone asks what heâs up to.
âAlex!â Ethan exclaims. âSit down, man! How have you been?â
âNot too bad,â Alex says, pushing his glasses up his nose. âI donât want to interrupt; the two of you look like you were having a serious conversation.â
Ethan and I glance at each other.
âDo you remember Jessica?â I ask Alex.
Something odd crosses Alexâs face at the mention of my ex. I donât really recognize the expression, and itâs gone before I can look too closely.
âYes,â he says shortly.
âSheâs back,â Ethan tells him. âNot only that, butâ¦â
He glances at me, and I grimace. Iâm not going to keep it a secret, but I wasnât sure if I was ready to tell anyone else yet. Too late now, unfortunately.
âShe had a kid,â I tell Alex. âTurns out, it was my kid. Heâs three, now. I only found out yesterday.â
âWait⦠What?â Alex asks. He sits heavily in the spare chair, looking taken aback by the information. âAre you serious?â
âAs serious as can be,â I say grimly.
âItâs fucking shit, thatâs what it is,â Ethan adds.
âBut thatâsâ¦â Alex shakes. âI canât believe it.â
I look up, caught by the sudden anger in his voice. Iâm grateful that heâs angry on my behalf, but it feels like thereâs something more to his fury. His lips are white with how hard heâs pressing them together, and I see him lower his hands, which heâs clenched into white-knuckled fists, beneath the table.
âYeah,â I say, wondering whatâs going on.
Suddenly, Alex looks at me. The look in his eyes are intent, and that expression flits across his face, still too fast to catch.
âIâm sorry,â he says.
He could easily be saying that heâs sorry I have to go through something like this. But the way he says it, his voice low and intense, makes it feel like thereâs something more to it.
But what?
âI better go,â he says, standing before I can question him.
Heâs gone as swiftly as he arrived, disappearing into the ground. Ethan snorts as I stare at his retreating back.
âHe really hates injustice,â he says.
Is that all it is? Somehow, Iâm not sure. Something doesnât feel right.
âYeah,â I say quietly. âHe does.â
