âDonât you have a meeting with your publisher?â
; âNot until lunchtime. I was going to catch up on some jobs, pick up a gift, but that can all wait. If I move fast, I should still make my appointment later. But I need to take Brutus.â
âOkay. But as youâre going to be spending one-on-one time with him, thereâs something else you should probably know.â Harriet glanced at Fliss, who rolled her eyes dramatically.
Molly braced herself for more revelations. âWhat?â
âHis name isnât actually Brutus. Itâs Ruffles.â
Nine
âDaniel, thereâs a woman in reception to see you. She says itâs urgent.â
Snowed under with the complexities of the case he was handling, Daniel didnât even look up. âShe needs to make an appointment.â
âItâs more complicated than that.â
âIf itâs complicated, then she definitely needs to make an appointment.â
âThis isnât business. Itâs, er, personal.â
Daniel looked up. He never, ever, allowed his personal life to intrude on his work. It was one of the reasons heâd never hooked up with anyone from the office. âWhatâs her name?â
âShe didnât give her name, but she has a dog with her. And this is the weird partâshe says itâs your dog.â
âA dog?â Danielâs internal radar sounded several loud alarm bells. âWhat sort of dog?â
âA boisterous German shepherd who is creating havoc in reception.â Marsha smiled. âWhen you were asking all those questions the other day, I wondered what was going on. Were you worried it would make you seem more human? Because honestly, that would be a good thing. You should have told me.â
âTold you what?â
âThat you have a dog.â
Tension spread across his shoulders and down his spine. âAre you telling me one of my sisters is in reception?â
âYour sisters? No. I know Fliss and Harry. This woman has dark hair. Very pretty.â Marsha looked intrigued. âI assumed you knew her.â
He knew her. The description sounded like Molly, and if she was standing in reception with a German shepherd it meant he was in more trouble than he could possibly have imagined.
Sheâd found out the dog wasnât his.
He pushed away from his desk and stood up just as his cell phone started to ring and Harrietâs name popped up.
He ignored the phone. If it was a warning, then she was too late, and right now his priority was handling Molly, not finding out how sheâd discovered the truth.
The annoying thing was that heâd been intending to tell her that morning, but she hadnât shown up. Heâd assumed that whatever had made her run from him the day before was still bothering her. Heâd dropped Brutus back with his sisters and told himself heâd try one more time tomorrow.
Marshaâs voice stopped him at the door. âShe said to give you a message. Said she hoped she wasnât âruffling your feathersâ by showing up here. Does that mean anything to you?â
Yes. It meant she not only knew the dog didnât belong to him, she also knew his name wasnât Brutus.
Ruffles.
âHow angry is she on a scale of one to ten?â
âWhy would she be angry?â
