She broke away and gasped for air. âYouâre still my boss.â
âI donât care about that. It wonât change anything.â His palms came up to frame her cheeks, and when his face dipped to hers, she realized he was shaking. They both were. âJust let me love you.â
; He didnât mean it the way it sounded. That wasnât possible. But her body already missed his. So what if the word âloveâ from Desâs mouth for any reason made her long foolishly for more? She was a pragmatist, and she didnât expect miracles.
Her rundown apartment and her job suddenly didnât factor in the decision. This wasnât about any of that. He didnât feel sorry for her. It also wasnât about Cole or quick office fucks with thick ripple icicles from the tree, as amazing as that had been.
There was a world of secrets in his eyes and she wanted to learn them all.
âCome with me,â she murmured.
Chapter Seven
Her bedroom matched the rest of the house. It was sparsely decorated and the overhead light left the corners in shadows. Not counting her desk. That was bathed in a purple and yellow shimmering glow.
He grinned. âYou have a lava lamp. You didnât even live through the sixties.â
âNo, but I loved them just the same. You shouldâve seen my room back in Tennessee. I had a black light and fuzzy posters.â Biting her lip, she walked to the full bed. âSorry, itâs kind of small.â
âThatâs okay. Weâll just stack up double-decker.â
She laughed and flipped one of her ponytails over her shoulder. âDo you want a drink first? I have soda and eggnog. Coffee too.â
âIâm fine, thanks.â He came up behind her and snagged her full hips in his hands. She was rounded in all the right ways, and his cock wasnât the least bit bashful about showing its appreciation. âI just want you.â
She slipped away and opened the nightstand drawer. âI donât think I have any condoms. I havenât bought any sinceââ She sighed.
âSince when?â
âSince I came here. I thought I mightâve had some stashed from home, but theyâd probably be duds anyway.â She sat down heavily on the bed. âIâve never had a guy in this room.â
âAm I supposed to be disappointed about any of these things? Because Iâm not.â He sat down beside her and rubbed her thigh. âI have some.â
âOf course you do. You and Cole are always prepared.â
He didnât miss the note of dejection in her voice. He turned toward her, waiting until she did the same. âIâd like to not use them tonight. Iâve neverâ¦â He exhaled. âIâve never gone raw with a woman.â
âWhat about with a man?â
âNo. Thereâs only been Cole and some dude in college. I just tried it with him to see if I was really bi.â He glanced down at his hands. âThe experience sucked, so I decided it was just about Cole for me. And only when weâre with a woman.â
âYouâve known Cole a long time.â
âYeah. We met in high school in Maine. We came to New York for college and stayed.â
âWas he born in England or something?â
âYou mean because he uses the word âloveâ as an endearment?â At her nod, he chuckled. âHe was an exchange student in London for one semester. I think he tries to sound British to get women going.â
âIt works for Van. She swoons every time he starts that âloveâ stuff.â Wendy picked at a loose thread on her comforter. âWhen did you and he, you know? Start doing it?â
Considering everything sheâd done with them, he found it incredibly charming that she could still be shy. âWe didnât have sex until we shared a girl at our prom senior year. Weâve been together sporadically since then. If youâre wondering about my sexual history, Iâve been tested recently. Iâm clean.â
Wordlessly, she crawled into his lap and wrapped her arms around his neck. Her tongue parted his lips, tasting. Exploring. Giving him back something he hadnât felt for way too long.
Hope.
