Ben shrugged. âAfter this afternoon, we werenât quite sure which side your loyalties were on.â
âLoyaltiesââ I glanced at the woman now standing beside me before looking at Ben. Ripping his damn head off while his hands were wrapped in gauze seemed ill-advised. Not with this girl trembling beside me. âNow is not the time for this. Can you just take us to Jake?â
âI can take Kayla. Iâll see if he wants to see you.â
; I fisted my hands.
âNo, she can come.â Kaylaâs voice was shaky, but her face was sure. âI know heâd want her there.â
I swallowed down the angry tears. âThank you.â
âSuit yourself.â Ben held out his arm. âWe have to head upstairs.â
Kayla tucked her hair behind her ear. âI didnât recognize you or Iâd have come over to sit with you.â
I gave her a tight smile. âSame. You were a lot smaller last time I saw you.â
âBraces and crooked pigtails.â
I laughed. âYes. That I remember.â
She gripped my forearm as we followed Ben down the hall to the bank of elevators. âI know Jake wants you in the room. The guys are just⦠Well, the guys. Protective to a fault. Why I donât live in town.â
âYou donât?â
She shook her head. âI work in Syracuseâwell, worked. I just got fired.â
âFired?â
She shrugged. âWhen I got the call that Jake was in the hospital, my boss didnât take too kindly to me wanting to leave.â
âJerk. Itâs family. Iâm sure we can talk to him or her.â
Kayla shrugged. âIt was a shit job. I took it because I thought I was going to be training to be a sous chef. In reality, I was just learning how not to get my ass groped.â
âJesus.â
Ben shot a dark glance over his shoulder.
âAll part of working in the restaurant field. Waitressing gets it far worse.â
âNot in my bar.â
âYeah?â She finger-combed her hair. âJake told me you took over Sharkeyâs. Or at least inherited.â
âItâs mine.â It was the first time Iâd really said it out loud. âIt needs work, but itâs going to be amazing when Iâm done with it.â I gave Ben a little side-eye. âWhen weâre done with it.â
Ben held the door to the elevator open, but he didnât say anything as we crossed the threshold.
âSo, are you a chef?â
She shrugged. âTrying to be. School didnât take, but Iâm self-taught. Iâve been cooking and working in restaurants since I was sixteen.â
The elevator opened and Ben strode off. Kaylaâs gaze followed him then returned to mine, her cheeks flushed.
Ben was attractive, if a littleâ¦intense. âMaybe we can talk about that when we get Jake situated?â
