âWhat are you two doing today?â Claire asked as she began to eat.
Allen looked at Marcus and grinned. âIâm going to see Ainsley. Sheâs going to show me the sights.â
Marcus snorted. âThat what theyâre calling it these days?â
Allen flushed scarlet. âShove it,â he growled good-naturedly. He looked at Marcus. âWhat are your plans?â
He smirked. âIâm going to join you and Ainsley.â
âIf you must,â Allen growled.
âIâm only joking. Iâm going to call on Cecelia.â His groin tightened at the thought of calling on Cecelia. âAnd then weâre going to do whatever she had planned for herself today.â He grinned at the thought. He didnât even care what it was. He just wanted to be with her. They could darn socks all day and he would be happy.
He tossed his napkin onto his plate and stood. âSpeaking of which, could you make my excuses to Mother and Father? I donât want to wait for them to come down.â
Claire stabbed a fork toward him. âYou may want to send a calling card, first, Marcus, to be sure sheâs receiving callers today.â
Heâd never sent a calling card in his life. She would receive him. Any alternative was laughable. âWhy would I do that? Sheâs not angry at me anymore.â
âStraightened all that out, did you?â Claire asked.
He grinned. Theyâd more than straightened it out.
Claire raised a brow at him and said to Lord Phineas, âDarling, why donât you tell Marcus where we went last night?â
Lord Phineas shot her a look hot enough to scorch paper. âIâm certain he doesnât want to hear about that.â
Yet Claire continued. âI took Finn to see the cabin. You remember Grandfatherâs old hunting lodge, donât you?â She tilted her head at Marcus, but the wry tilt to her mouth told him she knew already.
âI remember it.â He hadnât been able to stop thinking about it all night, truth be told. âYou say you took Lord Phineas?â
Damn it all. The maid was supposed to go this morning to change the rumpled sheets and do the housekeeping.
âMmm-hmm,â Claire hummed.
âDamn it, Claire,â he began.
Lord Phineas sat up taller and said, âWatch it, Marcus.â
âApologies,â he murmured. âStop acting like the cat that ate the cream.â
; âI will as soon as you admit whatâs going on,â she shot back.
âI admit nothing,â he batted out.
âIâm guessing it was Cecelia, wasnât it?â Claire asked, not the least bit sly about her probing.
âLeave it alone, Claire,â Lord Phineas warned.
âListen to your husband, Claire,â Marcus warned as well.
âOh, posh. I have your best interests at heart, Marcus.â She suddenly sobered. âHow is Cecelia?â
He shrugged. âSheâs well.â Probably sore, but that wasnât anything Claire needed to know about.
âI have heard some things, Marcus,â she started.
