âI think Iâll use the dildo I bought after all. And to hell with saving myself for anyone. And Iâ¦â Her eyes fill with tears. âI donât know whatâs wrong with me. Why I canât be normal.â
âYouâre normal.â I rush to my feet and draw her into my arms before she runs away. She looks like she wants to. âYouâre great. Please donât go.â
âBut Iâ¦â She beats her small fists on my back. âIâm not good to you. Or Ryan. Whatever it is he wants. I was always so sure of what I should do. How I should do it. Nothing works! Itâs like baking. No matter what I do, nothing ever comes out the way itâs supposed to. And Iâm not supposed to want two men. Me! I plan everything in my life. This wasnât in the plan.â
âYou changed the plan. Like Ryan changed his schedule,â I say, my mind trying to absorb all this.
âYes!â she wails on my shoulder. âEverythingâs changing.â
âMaybe thatâs not such a bad thing.â
She sniffles quietly. âYou think?â
âWhen youâre unhappy, change can be good.â I turn my face to kiss her hair. âAnd as you decide what you need in your life, you change your goals. Your plans. Thatâs not a bad thing at all.â
; âAre you changing? Your plans?â
âI donât have any plans,â I mutter. Apart from making it through the year sane. I donât have many choices. I feel as if my life depends on the decisions of others.
But I donât say that.
âI want you to be happy,â she whispers, and my heart clenches with something like pain. âIâd change my plans to make you happy.â
âYou should only change your plans to make yourself happy,â I tell her, certain thatâs the truth, and not sure why my eyes burn like that. âYou should choose a guy who will give you what you need.â
She pulls back, studying my face. âAnd what do I need?â
Love.
I shake my head. âThatâs for you to decide.â
âI should go.â
I donât want her to go. Why canât I promise Iâm the one who can make her happy?
Why canât I acknowledge Iâm not?
âHey.â I catch her hand before she walks away from me. âHereâs a little secret: I like you, too, Bry. You know that, right?â
She smiles. Itâs faint but bright. So real. âDoes that mean youâre going to the hospital event with me?â
Thereâs always a catch, isnât there? âSure thing.â

Leaning against a store front not far from home, I stand smoking and staring out at the snow-covered street and the passing cars.
Iâve just searched everywhere I could think ofâagainâfor my brother. Called everyone I could think of, talked to people on the street, in the parks, even in hospitals and homeless centers. The cold is biting, numbing my face and hands.
I throw the stub of my cigarette to the melting snow, and light up another.
Dead end. End of the road. Impasse.
My chest is too tight. Iâm not sure itâs wise to hold out hope for Xavier. No, I donât think heâs dead, I sure as hell hope not, but heâs probably so far gone by now, so deep in addiction, I have no clue how to reach him. How to bring him back.
I donât have any hope that heâll come back and that things will return to how they were before.
