âIt feels good,â I said with a giggle.
âI wanted to call you with the news I had.â
âOh? Whatâs going on?â
âThe Italian police caught Gianni.â
âOh my gosh, they did? Where was he?â
âIn one of his Tuscan villas out where all of the vineyards are. It was under a previous wifeâs name, but they found him and arrested him, and heâll be locked away for a long time.â
âYou have no idea how relieved I am to hear that.â
âOh, I think maybe I do,â he said with a chuckle.
I felt a warmth spread through my chest as I relaxed back into my chair at my small desk.
âHow have you been since we got back?â Kevin asked.
âItâs been a process. Iâve got a bit of work Iâm pounding out, but nothing special.â
âHowâs that book coming along?â
âItâs about seventy-five percent there,â I said.
âThatâs good. Thatâs a good chunk.â
âYep. Then thereâs the editing and the re-editing and the never being fully satisfied with the outcome.â
âYouâre a wonderful writer. Iâm sure itâll be great,â he said.
âThanks.â
The silence was awkward, and I wasnât sure if it was my place to ask. I had overheard the phone conversation on the plane heâd with the childrenâs mother. I wanted to ask him how things were going on that front; if they were patching things up and trying to be a family again.
But part of me didnât want to know the answer.
âThe kids miss you,â Kevin said.
âThey do? Well, I miss them, too. Tell them for me, okay?â
; âI will. Orââ
âOr, what?â I asked.
âYou could tell them yourself, if you wanted. Over dinner.â
âDinner,â I repeated.
âYeah. You know, that thing you eat while the sun goes down, like after your day is finished.â
âBut my days never get fully finished,â I said with a grin.
âThen that thing you eat at two in the morning when youâve been up working way too late and have neglected to nourish yourself.â
âAh, that meal. Got it. I vaguely remember it.â
