âThink of all the humans that work with us. With technology and social media, any one of them could have revealed our kind, yet none has done so. And the few that tried were taken care of. Anyway, who in their right mind will believe Gaby without solid evidence?â
âEven so, Kiara is still a threat.â He had agreed to the bond, however, it was Kiaraâs right to fight and likely kill Gaby. âNot to mention my brother will fight to dismantle Team Greywolf.â
Rylee snorted. âKing Conan and your father threatened to do away with my team for ages. Yet, here we are. Still standing strong.â
âMy official resignation from Team Greywolf might soften his resolve.â
âNo offense, but like your father, King Conan hates humans with a savage passion. He will never agree to allow us to continue. Not if it means helping them.â
It pained Steele to think he once felt the same way about humans. Hell, even low status lycans annoyed him. Because heâd been a jerk, it was his karma to fall in love with a human. Then lose her. âIâll reiterate to him how important human lives are to our survival.â
âIâll put you on temporary leave, Commander Steele. After a couple months, if you still want to step down, Iâll accept your resignation.â
âIf you insist, maâam, but only for a month. Kiara says the bonding ritual will happen in a month or less.â
âTalk about a shotgun wedding.â
âAre you at headquarters, maâam?â
âIâll be back in a few days. Donât worry. Nothing will happen to Gaby.â
âGood. All that matters is her safety.â
; Chapter 21
Gaby flew to another hiding place. Cricket and Slade accompanied her to Rachelâs fatherâs cabin in Oregon. Secluded in the woods, but not completely isolated with homes half a mile away. She pulled her small suitcase into the home and glanced around the living room meant for humans, not lycans. Normal. âNice.â
Cricket opened the entertainment console and frowned. âNo games.â
âThatâs okay, I have my laptop.â
Slade furrowed his brow at his mate. âHon, you donât have time to play.â
âI know, but sheâll die of boredom.â
Gaby frowned. âLeaving so soon?â
âWeâll be gone for two weeks,â said Cricket.
âR and R?â Gaby asked.
Cricket snorted. âI wish. Undercover job.â
âDonât say anything more or weâll have to eat her,â said Slade, his tone deadpan.
âI donât want to know,â blurted Gaby.
âHa, ha. Hon, donât freak her out.â
âIâm kidding.â Slade winked at Gaby. âEven if you work for Rylee, itâs still on a need to know basis.â
Slade had such a serious persona, sometimes it was hard to tell when he joked. âRoger that.â
âCome on, Iâll give you a tour of the rest of the cabin,â said Cricket.
âYouâve been here before?â
