Agnes picked the envelope up off the table. âDoes Jean give you an envelope full of money every month?â
âOh.â Bernadette visibly relaxed. âYes, she does.â
âSee!â Jean pointed at the receptionist then folded her arms in triumph.
âAnd what do you do with the envelope?â Agnes said.
âWell.â Bernadette looked up as she concentrated on her answer. âUsually, I buy makeup for my tutorial videos, but one month I bought new lighting for my studio. Well, my bedroom, but thatâs where I shoot my videos. The lights have made a huge difference to the quality of the recording. Everyone said they would, but I wasnât sure until I tried. Itâs so, so much better now.â
âYou spent the money?â Jean gaped.
âWell, yeah.â Bernadette looked around at everyone. âWasnât I supposed to spend it? Did you want me to save it? You never said, but I thought what I did with it was up to me.â
The women started to argue, but Agnes held up a hand for silence. âBernadette, why did you think Jean was giving you cash?â
âI thought it was a tip. Was I wrong?â She twisted her hands in front of her. âI mean, itâs okay if we get tips, isnât it? It isnât against the rules or anything. I donât thinkâ¦â
For a second, you could have heard a fly buzz.
âWhy on earth would I give you a tip?â Jean said. âIâm not a hotel guest.â
âI thought it was because you appreciated my service.â
âWhat service?â
âYou know, when you come in through the hotel lobby and Iâm friendly and stuff. And when I help you carry out new bedding and bring back laundry. That sort of thing.â
âWait. What?â Agnes turned back to Jean. âWeâre doing your laundry?â
âNo. Of course not. I just like the sheets here better than mine, so every week I borrow some and bring them back when I pick up new ones.â
Margaret groaned, Shona glared, and Heather reached out to smack Jean on the back of the head.
âDougal never agreed to us borrowing sheets,â Heather said.
âI didnât think heâd miss them.â Jean looked at Dougal. âHave I left you short?â
âThis is unbelievable,â Agnes muttered.
âIâm confused,â Bernadette said. âIt sounds like the money wasnât a tip.â
That prompted groans all round.
It was time to take control of the three-ring circus happening in her office. Agnes held up her hands and shouted, âRight, things are going to change, starting now. Hand over your keys.â She pointed at Jean. âAnyone else have keys that I donât know about?â There were shakes of heads. âNo more taking toiletries,â she told them. âThe arrangement you had with Dougal is over.â
âWell,â Heather said huffily, âI think thatâs up to Dougal, not you.â
Agnes turned to her boss and, for the first time since sheâd taken the job at his hotel, she let every bit of her irritation show on her face. She folded her arms, tapped her toe, and dared him to undermine her. Career at stake or not, sheâd walk out the damn door if he did. âDougal?â
He took a step back from her while tugging at the collar of his shirt. âIâm afraid I have to agree with my manager. This situation is making it difficult to keep track of stock.â
Agnes nodded her approval. That was the right answer.
âBut where will we get our wee shampoos?â Shona said.
; âAnd those mini soaps. I love the mini soaps,â Margaret added.
