âNo trust.â She sighed. âOkay, this will sound a little nutty.â
He cocked an eyebrow at her. âRemember who youâre talking to, Angel. Iâve been holed up here for over two years, bouncing off the walls.â
âFine. You know I read a lot.â He nodded. âI tend to read kidsâ and teensâ books, and I like fantasyâLord of the Rings, Harry Potterâthat sort of thing. The characters become real to me when I read, and sometimes they pop out of the books and talk to me.â
âLike Dobby?â
She beamed at him. âYes, exactly like Dobby.â
Duncan looked around. âWas he here just now?â
âNo, it was other characters.â She tugged on the box. âCan I have dessert now?â
He held it tight. âIn a minute. How often do these characters pop up?â
She shrugged. âI donât know.â
âAnd you know they arenât real, right?â
She hoped her look was scathing. âYes, Duncan. I know that when I talk to Gandalf that he is only in my head and the pages of a Tolkien book.â
âOkay, then, have at it.â He pushed the tiramisu towards her and sat back in his seat.
âThatâs it? You arenât worried that you hired a lunatic?â
âNope. Everybody talks to themselves. You just prefer it when your inner voice has a fictional face.â His smile was pure sexual invitation, and the temperature in the room suddenly seemed to shoot up. âWant to tell me what they were saying about me?â
She felt herself flush. âWhat makes you think they were talking about you?â
âSo thatâs how weâre playing it. Iâll make you a deal, you tell me what they were saying, and Iâll...â He searched around for something to offer.
Donna jumped in when he hesitated. âYouâll give the lecture at Glasgow School of Art, just this once.â
He frowned at her, and she thought heâd tell her to stop interfering. âOkay, Iâll do it. Just this once. But you have to come with me so that I can show you around.â
A surge of pure longing made her knees go weak, and she was glad she was already sitting down. âI canât. Itâs Mairiâs birthday that weekend,â she lied, hating herself for it at the same time. She looked up at him through her lashes. âDoes that mean the dealâs off?â She tried to sound hopeful so that he would think she wanted to back out.
; âNo, the dealâs on. Iâll take you another time.â
âSo, youâre really going to lecture, just to hear what my imaginary friends told me about you?â
âAye.â His jaw firmed with determination.
âIâll be mad if I embarrass myself and you back out.â
âYou have my word that I wonât.â
Donna almost pumped the air in victory. âFine. Then Iâll tell you. Hermione says I should make my apologies, go to my room and forget all about tonight.â
âI donât know who she is, but I donât like her,â Duncan rumbled. âWhat about the rest?â
She swallowed hard and reached for her wine. âMolly Weasley told me to use protection if we sleep together.â
âDid she now?â He leaned forwards and rested his arms on the table. âWhat did you tell her?â
âThat I didnât think the spell she gave me would work.â Her voice had become a husky croak.
