Normally, Monty would have explained that there were all different methods of persuasion. But in this case, it wasnât necessary.
âKarly, when you spoke to your sonâs adoptive parents, did they give you their names?â
âNina and Ed Vaughnâwhy?â
âBecause I know your son. His nameâs Jonah. Heâs a great kid. The more ironic part is that Arthur knows him, too. And he likes him.â
âAre you serious?â Karly gasped.
âSerious as a heart attack.â
âHow? Through whom? Since when?â
âThatâs a long, complicated story. Iâll get into it later, when I see youâwhich I will.â A smug spark lit Montyâs eyes. âGive me those few hours to organize things. Then head over to my office, say around five oâclock. The address is on my card. Not only are we going to spring this on Arthur Shore tonight, but weâre going to get exactly what we want from him.â
THIRTY-ONE
Montyâs adrenaline was pumping when he arrived at Laneâs.
Morgan answered the door when he knocked. She waited for him to identify himself, then double-checked that fact by peeking through the peephole, just to be on the safe side. Clearly convinced, she unlocked and opened the door.
âNice precautions,â Monty praised, striding in and shrugging out of his parka. âIâm proud of you.â
; âThanks.â Morgan eyed him speculatively and frowned. It was the first time sheâd seen Monty since his run-in with the falling brick. âLane said you were fine. But some of those facial cuts look pretty deep. Are you sure youâre all right?â
âJust pissed. And even more determined to nail our perpâs ass to the wall.â He tossed his jacket on a chair.
âYouâre certainly fired up,â Morgan observed. âDid Barbara provide any answers?â
âIt was a very productive meeting.â He paused, studied her expression, then frowned. âYou look lousy. Did something happen?â
âJonahâs latest CBC wasnât great, which means heâs losing blood. His vitals are holding, so thereâs no immediate rush for surgery, but the doctors want to do a transfusion, see how it goes. Unfortunately, the only compatible donor is Lenny, and heâs not their prime choice. Heâs got a heart condition and heâs on a blood-thinning drug.â
âSo Lenny has the same blood type as Jonah. Interesting. Well, I might have an alternative. Weâll know tonight. Keep your fingers crossed.â
âWhatâs going on?â Lane stepped out of the photo lab.
âI could ask you the same thing.â
âMorganâs been rummaging through her parentsâ memorabilia,â Lane replied. âShe just found the negatives from the photos taken at the Kellermansâ party. Fortunately, Elyse left them in the packet of photos she had developed after the initial trauma of the murders was over. In the meantime, Iâve been enhancing more of the crime-scene shots. I did find one interesting thing. Thereâs a round circular spot on the floor where something was definitely removed. Itâs about a foot in diameter and itâs near the door. Probably a Spackle container or trash receptacle of some kind. The basementâs a pitâfilthy, dusty, loaded with stones and debris. Yet that one space is clean as a whistle.â
âSomeone got rid of the container at the murder scene.â Monty was already heading in the direction of the lab. âYeah,â he confirmed, having bent over to study that section of the enhanced photo. âThe killer must have tossed something in there that would have given him away, so he got rid of the whole thing.â
âMonty,â Morgan interrupted, hovering in the doorway. âYou never answered my question. What did Barbara tell you?â
Monty cleared his throat. âFor now, all I can tell you is that I know who sent you that Tyvek. It wasnât BS; it was meant to protect youâa way to reciprocate the kindness your mother showed her.â
Frustration flashed across Morganâs face. âMonty, Iâm your client. Iâm the one youâre supposed to be open with.â
âIâm being as open as I can, under the circumstances. This situation is complicated. Once again, Iâm going to have to ask you to trust me.â
Clearly, she was fighting back tears. âGive me something. Anything.â
A long pause. âRemember what you told me about your motherâs final journal entries? The ones she made during the last few months of her life?â
âOf course.â
