âSeriously?â Alana kicked a half-eaten apple across the ground. âAt least you guys have gifts! So stop complaining!â
Everyone got awkwardly quiet. Louie offered her a piece of chocolate. But Alana stormed off without another word.
âIâll go talk to her,â Ren said.
âNo, Iâll do it.â Adrik shook his head. âIâm her brother.â
After he left, Ren faced Marco. âOkay, son of war. How do we anticipate Zotz and Blood Moonâs next move?â
âWhat if theyâre out of moves?â Louie said. âWhat if this is it?â
âJerks like that?â Marco raised his eyebrows. âThey like power, but they like gloating over it even more. This is a game, and winning is no fun unless itâs public.â
âWhoa,â Louie said. âYou got all that because youâre the god of warâs kid?â
Marco cringed. âNo,â he said. âI play sports. But itâs the same idea.â
The hairs on my arms stood at attention. Marco was right. Zotz loved an audience. But not Ixkikâ. She liked to slink around in the shadows like a thieving rat that only comes out at night. And until we knew for certain which one of them was in charge, there was no way we could guess their next play.
âAs fascinating as all this is,â Brooks said, âshouldnât we be asking how to find that cave?â
Silence fell over us like a thick cloud.
Marco rubbed his thumb over his scar. âIf you can find Kâiin, and it shows you where the gods are, and if you survive, you need to figure out how to wake them up.â
âAnd rescue them without getting eaten,â Louie said.
âFirst things first,â I said, feeling overwhelmed.
Ren nodded. âWe need to go to the Cave of Crystals.â
; âYou mean you need to go,â Marco said. âIâll stay here andâ¦â He didnât finish, but his eyes said it all. They were a mix of anger and defiance, and I understood. He didnât want to sit around doing nothing, helplessly waiting to go down.
âOkay. You get ready to defend SHIHOM and the World Tree,â I said, âif it comes to that.â
Louie covered his face with his hands and moaned.
âWeâll take the twins with us,â I said.
Brooks ran a hand through her hair. I could tell she was frustrated and not used to so many voices brewing in the quest pot. âZaneâ¦â she said in a warning tone.
âWhat? We canât do this alone,â I told her. âWeâll need the godbornsâ help.â
Ren kicked a lump of melting snow with the toe of her boot, fixing her eyes on Marco. âFind out all the godbornsâ gifts. Make a list of which will be the most useful.â
âBut donât tell them anything,â Brooks put in. âNot yet.â
âFine,â Marco said. âBut about this questâ¦Whereâs the element of surprise? Zotz and Ixkikâ know youâre going to try a rescue mission. Theyâll be waiting.â
Ren twisted her watch anxiously.
Ah-Puchâs words echoed through my head: Ren is the oneâ¦
And then, finally, the revelation hit me like a two-ton wrecking ball. The idea was bold and brilliant and unexpected. Even old Zotz and faceless Ixkikâ wouldnât anticipate this move, not in a million years. My mouth spread into a full-on grin as hope filled my chest. âYouâre right,â I said to Marco. âTheyâre expecting us to storm the castle.â
Brooks followed my gaze to Renâs watch and caught on. âBecause thatâs what weâve done before,â she said slowly. She went over to Ren. âBut for this quest, we have a secret weapon.â
