âSo amazing.â He wiped his eyes, but it didnât seem to do any good. There were so many reasons he wanted to cry. He was so proud of Liv he couldnât contain his emotions.
âYou must think Iâmâ¦â
âI donât think youâre anything, except in love with my mom.â Renie put her hand on Benâs. âI donât know what happened, but this change in her is because of you.â
He shook his head, still unable to speak.
âIâve never seen my mom so determined about anything. Or passionate. I never knew she had it in her, is that terrible for me to say?â
âYour mom is one of the most passionate people Iâve ever known. And I donât mean that in the way youâre assuming I do.â
Renie laughed out loud. âIâm not assuming anything, Ben.â The smile it brought to her face stayed there.
âI better get going.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âAre you saying your mom knows Iâm here?â
âNo. She doesnât.â
âThis is her night. Not mine. I donât know what your mom told you, but we made a promise to each other. Unless she asked me to be here, Iâm not supposed to be.â
âThatâs silly, sheâdââ
Ben held up his hand. âRenie, your mom and I have an agreement, and if I donât honor it, how do you think sheâll feel?â
âShe doesnât know Paige and Mark are here, either.â
âItâs different, and you know it.â
Ben squeezed Paigeâs hand and winked. There werenât tears in her eyes until their eyes met. âThank you,â he mouthed before he stood, shook Markâs hand and left the stands, hands in his pockets.
He only hoped he could get out of there and into his truck without completely breaking down. He was so damn proud of her. When they talked last night, she hadnât said a word about competing this weekend, and that was why he didnât understand Paigeâs text. If she had wanted him to be here, she wouldâve said so.
Something by the barn caught his eye. Liv. He watched her run into the arms of a cowboy who picked her up and spun her around in a circle. The look on her face was pure joy. The cowboyâs too. Joy.
He forgot about trying not to cry?now he worried he wouldnât make it to the truck before his chest cracked open with the pain burning in it. He had his answer. The reason Liv hadnât invited him to be here was because she was with someone else.
âOlivia Fairchild, am I ever proud of you!â Billy Patterson hooted at her before he swept her off her feet and spun her in a circle.
âCan you believe it? I got a sixteen point eight? I thought there was something wrong with the clock and I would be disqualified. Shit, Billy, sixteen point eight!â
; âMy mom and dad said you worked hard for it, girl. Theyâre damn proud of you. And I hope you donât mind me sayinâ I am too.â
âThanks, Billy. That means a lot to me.â
âWhaddaya say we go do a little celebratinâ tonight, just you and me?â
âBillyââ
âIâm just messinâ around, but it was worth a try. Thought maybe youâre so delirious with happiness that you forgot I donât do it for ya. God, Livvie, Iâve loved you most of my life.â
âThere are plenty of girls you do it for, Billy Patterson. Plenty. And you never loved me. Iâm somebody safe you flirted with.â
âCome out with us later. Iâm meeting up with your folks and some friends.â She winked at him.
