âI am focused,â I assured him.
âOkay, give me your top three picks. Instinctively,â David challenged.
âSoho Lingerie, Robotron, and DesignPen.â I didnât even hesitate. All three pitches were stuck in my brainâSoho Lingerieâs more than the others, for reasons I didnât understand.
David tilted his head. âYou werenât sold on Soho Lingerie when I first suggested them. What changed?â
âThe pitch was convincing. I think they can become huge if they move fast.â
A smile was playing on Beccaâs lips. âThereâs something youâre not telling us. You were acting weird when they came in.â
They both looked at me expectantly. If I said nothing, theyâd only become more suspicious.
âFine, I accidentally walked in on Tess Winchester while she was changing her bra or whatever.â
âOh shit, that must have been awkward. Poor woman,â Becca said.
âIs she hot?â David asked instantly.
I cocked a brow at him.
âForget that. âCourse sheâs hot. I could tell that even though she had her clothes on. How much of an eyeful did you get?â he continued.
âEnough to make it awkward.â And for me to lose control of my mind and body, apparently.
âAnd wait, that was enough to throw you off your game? How long has it been since youâve been with a woman?â David asked with a shit-eating grin.
âI date enough,â I replied without going into more detail. I didnât like discussing my private life. Not that there was much to it besides dates and no-strings-attached sex.
âWill you two stop?â Becca chastised.
âNo,â David answered at the same time I said, âYes.â
âCome on, man, give me a visual,â David pleaded. âJust something to make my day better. Andâ"
; I cut him off with a glare. âLetâs just get back to our topic. Anyway, that has nothing to do with the fact that theyâre one of my top picks.â
âThose are my top three too,â Becca said. âBut eventually we still have to narrow it down to one.â
âWell, weâre not choosing the finalists yet. We can invite at least twelve from the twenty teams to dinner and take it from there,â David said. I could tell he still wanted to talk about what I saw.
âLetâs think about this until tomorrow,â I said. âI donât like spur-of-the-moment decisions.â
Becca smiled devilishly again. âYes, we all know that.â
âYou keep giving me shit, but you like all the processes Iâve set in place too.â It had been my idea to have standardized procedures for nearly everything.
âI know. I just like to make fun of you. Oh, and now I see frown lines. Time to get your stress ball back.â She tossed it back to me. âWell, since weâre not deciding today, Iâm going back down to bust my internsâ balls some more.â
âIâm coming too,â David said.
The three of us were an unlikely group. At first glance, we didnât have much in common.
David wasnât much for following rules. He came to work wearing sneakers and jeans and would have been just as happy coaching a high school baseball team as he was running a million-dollar fund.
Becca shared his view on rules, but she liked to give him shit, not me...usually. She liked to indulge in the finer things in life and always showed up dressed to the nines.
