âPeter and I had the conversation about sex, you know. I told you about it.â
âWell, I hope you didnât tell him anything he didnât already know.â
âI donât think I did. In fact, about the only thing I could have told him was the only thing Iâve ever really learned about women.â
; âWhich is?â
âThat they like sex just as much as men.â
âGood God! I hope you didnât tell him that!â
âHeâll find out for himself in due course.â
âDue course is why he needs watching.â
âWhat would you do, if you were here?â
âI told you: sit between them.â
âI donât think thatâs a possibility,â Stone said. âAnything else?â
âWho is this girl?â
âHattie something. She lives at Park and Sixty-third.â
âAt least sheâs from a good address. That makes me sound like a snob, doesnât it?â
â Everybody at Knickerbocker is from a good address.â
âYou know, I think this is Peterâs first real date,â she said.
âUnless something happened at Herald that you donât know about.â
âPerish the thought! Anyway, they were watched like hawks by the faculty anytime there were girls on campus.â
âOh, I forgot to tell you: the woman from the Post called again.â
âPrunie?â
âNo, the younger one. Joan told her you were doing a book and that you would have nothing further to say until itâs published. Joan thinks that put her off.â
âIâm so glad. That sort of thing was a constant threat when Vance was alive. We had to book at Beverly Hills restaurants under false names to avoid the paparazzi.â
âNew York is better about that, I think.â
âThen why are they so interested in us?â
âMaybe we should hire a publicist,â Stone suggested.
âBut we donât want any publicity.â
âI mean hire a publicist to keep our names out of the columns.â
âHow does that work? It sounds unnatural.â
âThe publicist puts out a press release saying that heâs representing us, so all the calls go to him, if thereâs a question, and he gives them something innocuous, or just brushes them off.â
