âWhat time is it?â Holly asked, her mouth half full.
Stone consulted his watch. âA little after eight. Man, this is good cheese.â
âBread, too,â she said. âNight or morning?â
âI donât know. Night, would be my guess. More wine?â
âPlease.â
He poured it for her, then gulped. âI just had a thought,â he said.
âShare it.â
âLast meal?â
âStop sharing.â
They heard a noise coming from outside the door, steel clanking against concrete. It went on for some time, then it changed to the sound of a pick and shovel in dirt.
âI donât like the sound of that,â Stone said.
âMaybe itâs construction work.â
âSomehow, I donât think so.â
âI told you to stop sharing.â
Stone walked over to the door and listened. The sounds were clearer and even less encouraging. He could hear two men grunting at their labor. âWhy would they feed us, then kill us?â he asked.
The answer came back from the other side of the door. âBecause Iâm a romantic.â
âYouâve been listening to us, ah . . .â
âScrewing? Yeah. How could I help it?â
âWell, thanks for the food and wine.â
âDonât mention it. Nice Chianti, huh?â
âVery nice,â Stone replied. He went and sat by Holly.
âI think that answers your question,â he whispered.
âMore wine,â she said.
Stone poured for both of them.
âYouâre taking this a lot better than I am,â Holly said.
; âNo, Iâm not. Iâm just . . .â Stone stopped and listened. âThe digging stopped,â he said.
âOh, shit. More wine.â
Before he could pour, the door opened and a man stepped inside holding a shotgun.
âOkay, letâs go,â he said.
