âWell, I must say, I thought there was something weird about that; it was very unlike Vance. What did Arrington say to you?â
âI was in the shower; the hotel operator got the calling number from caller ID.â
âWell, this is very mysterious, isnât it?â
âIt certainly is.â Stone looked around the restaurant at the other diners. âWait a minute,â he said, half to himself.
âWhat?â
âYou notice anything about the other customers?â
Betty looked slowly around the restaurant. âI guess a lot of them look Italian. That speaks well of the restaurant, I suppose.â
âItâs a wiseguy joint,â Stone said, keeping his voice low.
âYou mean Mafia?â
âNot so loud. Thatâs exactly what I mean. Itâs just like a New York wiseguy joint; just look at these people.â
âWell, the women are a little flashy.â
âYes, they are.â
âAnd I donât think Iâve ever seen so many Italian suits outside of Rome.â
âRight.â
âDoes this make me a racist pig or something?â
âNo, it just makes you observant. Iâll bet half the faces in this place are in the mug books down at the LAPD.â
âBut what could Arrington possibly have to do with the Mafia?â
âI donât know, but thereâs got to be some kind of connection.â As he spoke, Stone looked up and saw four men coming down the stairs into the dining room. âLook whoâs here,â he whispered.
She followed his gaze. âYou know those guys?â
âOne of them,â Stone said. âI met him at Vanceâs.â

Stone pretended to consult the wine list, covering his face. âDonât look at him,â he said. âI donât want him to see me.â
âLook at who?â Betty asked. âI canât see a thing.â She leaned back and looked behind him. âOne of those backs looks familiar,â she said.
âHis name is Ippolito.â
âI remember his name on the invitation list, but he was the only one I didnât know.â
âStop craning your neck.â
; âItâs okay, heâs sitting at the round corner table with his back to us.â
Stone peeked over the wine list. âDo you know any of the other three?â
âNope; they donât even look familiar. A lot of beef on the hoof, though.â
