âWas it?â She had on sunglasses, too, but hers were darker than Tamiâs, so I couldnât see her eyes. But her voice sounded so hopeful that I couldnât do anything but smile.
âShe was your mother. Iâm sure that having you there was a big helpâÂâ
âAnd am I a help to you?â she asked, grabbing onto my forearm, almost making me spill my drink. âEven a little?â
I looked at her in surprise. âOf course. The kidsâÂâ
âBut thatâs notâÂthatâs a help to the court, yes. But an acolyteâs job is to help the Pythia, and I canâtâÂâ She broke off again, and even though I could see only half her face, it suddenly looked chagrined. âAnd here I am, laying my problems on your shoulders as well. Iâm making things worse!â
âYouâre not making things worse,â I told her. âYou neverâÂâ
And then somebody started yelling.
âIâm not looking! Iâm not looking! Donât freaking hex me, all right? Iâm blindâÂIâm totally, completely blind!â
âThat better not be that flimsy-Âass scarf you were trying to cheat with last night,â Tami saidâÂto Fred, since that was his voice. Like it was his curses after a bump, which sounded like somebody running headfirst into a bedpost.
I couldnât see him, since Rhea and I had ended up behind a potted palm. But when I looked around, there he was, blindfolded and clutching his forehead. âDamn it, are you convinced now?â he demanded.
âTwenty bucks,â Tami said, and Fredâs scowl grew worse.
âDonât give me that! Thereâs no kids in here!â
âBut some of us have delicate sensibilities,â Vi said, prompting him to laugh even while still wincing.
âYouâre about as sensitive as Marco,â he told her, or rather the bed, because he was still facing the wrong way. He course-Âcorrected, hands out in front of him this time, although there was nothing to run into. âSpeaking of which, I need to talk to Cassie.â
âSheâs not here,â Saffy said, licking salt off the rim of her glass and grinning at me. âShe took the afternoon off.â
âWell, shit,â Fred said. âThatâs great. Thatâs just perfect!â
âLooks like youâre gonna have to deal with whatever it is yourself,â Tami agreed, putting a hand on my arm when I started forward.
âI canât deal with it myself, and heâs already packing! The only person who can maybe do anything is Cassie, and if heâs gone by the time she gets backâÂâ
âPacking?â I said. âWhoâs packing?â
âCassie?â Fredâs head came up. âThat you?â
âCanât you tell?â Tami asked. âI thought you guys were like bloodhounds.â
; âThatâs only some of us, and it was never my gift. All I can smell is coconut oil and booze andâÂhey, are those margaritas?â
âConcentrate,â I said, throwing the nudists a couple of towels and going to take the blindfold off Fred.
âThanks,â he said, blinking. âThe call just came through. I said he was packing, but itâs more like trashing his room. The guys are downstairs with him, but I came up here becauseâÂlook, I know things arenât great between you and Mircea right now, but youâre still Pythia, so I thought maybeâÂâ
âFred, what are you saying?â
âSorry. Iâm just kinda emotional. Itâs weird, you know? None of us were exactly thrilled to get this assignment, but now weâre almost like a family. And to just lose somebodyâÂâ
âFred! Lose who?â
He took a breath. âMarco. Heâs been recalled, like Paulie and the others. We were told that Mircea needs him for the war and weâre not getting him back.â
âWhat?â
