Lilly nodded.
âBut, Lillyâ¦why didnât you just run, then?â
Thatâs when something totally unexpected happened. Lillyâs eyes, behind the lenses of her glasses, totally filled up with tears. Next thing I knew, she was having a crying jag of her very own.
âBecause thereâs no way I could ever win,â she said, with a sob. âDonât you remember how I got crushed in last yearâs election? Nobody likes me. Not the way they like you, Mia. I mean, you may be a baby-licker and all, but people seem to be able to relate to you, even with the whole princess thing. NOBODY can relate to meâ¦maybe because Iâm a genius, and thatâs intimidating to people, or something. I donât know why, really. I mean, you would think people would want the smartest leader they could find, but instead, they seem perfectly content to elect total MORONS.â
I tried not to take Lillyâs calling me a moron to heart. After all, she was in the middle of a full-blown personal crisis.
âLilly,â I said, astonishedly. âI didnât know you thought of yourself that way. You know. As not popular.â
Lilly looked up from the detention slips she was weeping into.
âWh-Why w-would I ever consider myself popular?â she stammered, sorrowfully. âY-Youâre the only real friend Iâve got.â
âThatâs not true,â I said. âYou have lots of friends. Shameeka and Ling Su and Tinaââ
; Lilly started to cry harder at the mention of Tinaâs name. Too late, I remembered Boris, and his new hotness.
âOh,â I said, patting Lilly on the shoulder. âSorry. What I meant wasâ¦Well, whatever. People DO like you, Lilly. Itâs just that sometimesâ¦â
Lilly lifted her tear-stained face.
âWh-What?â she asked.
âWell,â I said. âSometimes youâre kind of mean to people. Like me. With the whole baby-licker thing.â
âBut you ARE a baby-licker,â Lilly pointed out.
âYes,â I said. âBut, you know, you donât need to SAY it all the time.â
Lilly rested her chin on her knees.
âI guess not,â she said with a sigh. âYouâre right. Iâm sorry.â
While I had her in a conciliatory mood, I added, âAnd I donât like it when you call me POG or PIT, either.â
Lilly looked at me blankly.
âThen what am I supposed to call you?â
âHow about just plain Mia?â
Lilly seemed to think about this.
âButâ¦thatâs so boring,â she said.
âBut itâs my name,â I pointed out.
Lilly sighed again.
âFine,â she said. âWhatever. You have no idea how good you have it, POG. I mean, Mia.â
âGood? ME? Please!â I practically burst out laughing. âMy life is TERRIBLE right now. Did you SEE what Ms. Martinez gave me on my paper?â
Lilly wiped her eyes.
