âBecause you canât,â Ashleigh said.
âI assure you I can.â Gina leaned down and grabbed her white pumps from the bottom of the closet. Especially since she didnât have much choice.
âEw!â Ashleigh exclaimed.
âNot those shoes,â Amberleigh agreed.
Gina turned them over. They were a little scuffed on the heels, but otherwise they seemed fine to her.
âWhite pumps are for weddings,â Ashleigh whispered as if it were a secret.
âOnly?â Gina asked.
âMaybe christenings.â She glanced at Amberleigh.
The other girl shrugged and murmured, âConfirmations?â
âBar Mitzvahs!â Ashleigh announced.
âI think thatâs Bat Mitzvahs,â Gina corrected.
âBats donât have mitzvahs.â Ashleigh laughed. âYouâre silly.â
âThatâs me,â Gina agreed, heading for her room with her white dress and white shoes. âSilly, silly, silly.â
âHold on.â Amberleigh stepped in front of her and peered into Ginaâs eyes. âYou really gonna wear that?â
Gina nearly walked past without answering. But there seemed to be someone home behind Amberleighâs usually vacant blue gaze for a change. âI have a business meeting tomorrow.â
She didnât, not really. She hadnât bothered to call Mr. Morris and set up a meeting. That would only give him a chance to refuse.
âWith a man?â
âWhat difference does that make?â
Amberleigh lifted a brow and waited. Gina sighed, thinking of the short, squat, strange little man who had bought her ranch from the bank. She hated the guy. But he was a guy. And the last time sheâd visited him, asking for an extension on their loan, heâd taken one look at her dusty boots, faded jeans, and flannel shirt, lifted his lip, and said, Next time, wear a dress.
âYeah,â she said. âItâs a man. So?â
âImportant?â
âVery,â Gina agreed.
; âIn that case, sugar.â Amberleigh took the white garment from Ginaâs hands; Ashleigh took the white shoes, then together they tossed them into the closet and slammed the door. âYouâre gonna need a better dress.â
CHAPTER 9
âWhy are there dresses?â Gina asked, voice muffled as she pulled on a third, or maybe a fourth. Her head popped out the top. âFor that matter why would there even be dress?â
âYou never know when you might need a hot outfit.â Amberleighâs forehead creased as she studied Gina.
âI know,â Gina muttered. âThree days past never.â
âThis one works.â Amberleigh smiled. âDonât you think so, Ash?â
Gina was shocked that she fit into Amberleighâs clothes. The blonde appeared smaller in some ways and larger in two others. But with a little tugging and pinningâwhy Amberleigh had pins in her suitcase was as much of a mystery as why she had dressesâGina had to admit the dress worked.
