After six months, I donât think I can deal with not having her in my life. Fuck. Can I?
âThereâs been a lot going on in Lawryâs life lately. Sheâs busy doing stuff. You wonât run into her.â
âWhat kind of stuff?â And whatâs going on in her life?
âThe biggest change would be her selling Law of Attraction.â
âWhy? She loves her boho shop.â A million different possibilities are running through my head. But none can possibly have anything to do with me.
âShe no longer feels safe after what happened.â
Iâd wondered if their birth mother had continued to cause problems for Wren. Guess so. âCanât say I blame her. Christie is mentally unstable. Iâm afraid sheâs capable of more than Lawrence believes.â
âI donât mean the incident with Christie. Iâm talking about Lawry being assaulted and robbed at gunpoint in the alley behind the shop.â
Iâve not heard a word about this. âWhat the fuck, Stout? Is she all right?â
âYeah. She was a little banged up, and scared shitless, but sheâs okay now.â
Banged up? Okay now? âWhen did this happen?â
âAbout a month ago.â
Wren was attacked a month ago and not a single word was mentioned? âWhy is this the first time Iâm hearing about this?â
âDude, you ended your relationship with her. I took that as a clear indication you were no longer interested in what happened in my sisterâs life.â Both of those statements couldnât be further from the truth.
âWren ended things with me. But to hell with who ended what. She was attacked. Of course I would want to know.â Heâs very well aware of that. He chose to not say anything because heâs still pissed off at me. This is my punishment for hurting her.
Stout shrugs. âOkay. Now you know.â
Based on his tone, I hear a variety of silent comments attached to the end of that statement.
Okay. Now you know. So what are you going to do about it?
Okay. Now you know. So why do you care? You broke my sisterâs heart.
Okay. Now you know. And it doesnât change a motherfucking thing.
âLawry handed over the deposit bag. Fucker didnât have to knock her down and kick the hell out of her. The worst part is our piece-of-shit birth mother was the one who set up the whole thing. But her ass is sitting in jail now so thatâs a win.â
My sweet Wren was beaten. She shouldnât have been in that alley at night by herself. She should have been in Birmingham with me.
This is my fucking fault.
âI have to check on her.â Wren probably thinks Iâve known about this but chose to not call. She needs to know I care.
âIâm not sure thatâs a good idea.â
What the fuck does that mean? âWhy not?â
âLawryâs life is coming together again. She doesnât need the added confusion of you thrown into the mix.â
âAll I want to do is check on her and let her know Iâm concerned.â And hear her sweet voice.
âItâs been a rough few months but sheâs finally getting her life back together. Sheâs dating again. Iâm afraid hearing from you will turn her world upside down again.â
What.
The.
Fuck.
âSheâs already dating? Who?â That fucking hippie restaurant owner again?
âI donât understand why you act so surprised. Itâs been months since you told her youâd never marry her. You had to know sheâd start dating again at some point.â
âDoesnât mean I have to accept it.â Or like it. Because I donât. I fucking hate it.
All I can see is red as I imagine some fucker touching her. Tasting whatâs mine. I donât know if I can wait until Friday to see her.
âIâm done talking about shit that ended six months ago. Can you go to Savannah to talk to Savan Cider on Friday, or not?â
âYeah.â Wouldnât miss it for the fucking world. âWhat time?â
âTrain pulls out at eight.â
No worries. Iâll be on that motherfucking choo-choo. âAre we spending the weekend in Savannah?â
âWasnât planning on it. But I guess we can if you want. I sure as hell donât have anything going on here.â
Me either. âI need to see her, man.â He shakes his head at me, and saunters out of the room. I have to see her and put a damn stop to this dating shit.
Sheâs mine. Has been since the first time I saw her. Always will be.

âBooks appear well kept and legit. The numbers are there to support their evaluation. I predict itâll take two years to become profitable at the rate theyâre going. With our help, I think we can push that to nine months. Twelve at most.â
âDoes that mean youâre in favor of buying in?â
âIâm in if you and Porter are.â Most of the work would fall on them so itâs win-win for me.
âWould you be up for Lovibond buying two-thirds of Savan Cider if they sold the other third to a different investor? Or maybe even fifty-fifty depending on the purchase price?â
Stout didnât mention a second investor. Iâm not up for that. âYou said you wanted to buy a third and become partners with the founders. Whatâs this shit youâre dumping on me last minute about a totally new investor?â
âSavan Cider has a great basis for the brewery but not the heart for it. Theyâre willing to sell cheap. I think we can get them well below asking price; they want out that badly. And Lawry wants in. She has the money for her part, and sheâs ready to invest if you say itâs a go.â
Wren wants to go into business with us?
With me?
; âItâs a no-brainer. The numbers are there to support the purchase but what does going into business together mean for Lawrence and me?â
âIt means nothing. Youâre in Birmingham. Sheâs in Savannah. Youâll be partners from afar.â Stoutâs wrong. This doesnât mean nothing. Iâd be in charge of the numbers. Iâd have to talk to her. See her.
âLawrence wants this?â To be my business partner?
âShe does if you believe itâs profitable.â Sheâs putting her future in my hands. This is huge. And a very good sign for where our future could be going.
âIs this why you encouraged me to not call her?â
âI needed to hear your honest opinion before you knew she was the interested investor. I didnât want you jumping at the opportunity because you thought it was a way to bring her back into your life.â He knows I want Wren. And . . . heâs not stopping me here.
âSo sheâs not dating?â
âThat part is true. I think sheâs back with that guy she was going out with before you got together. The one with the restaurant.â Fuck. Not what I wanted to hear. But something can be done about that.
Thereâs no reason to not push forward with this merger but I want to see Wren first. âWill you drive me to her apartment?â
âSure thatâs the best idea tonight?â
âI have to find out if thereâs potential for a successful business partnership.â With any luck, much more will work out for us. I hope I havenât fucked up beyond repair.
I opt to not call Wren but I suspect Stout may have texted to give her a heads-up. Itâs his brotherly duty. But if he didnât, she was aware we were looking at books today. She knows Iâm in Savannah. Surely, she expects me to come to her.
âWant me to go up with you?â Fuck, no. Stoutâs presence would completely ruin our reunion.
âNah, Iâd rather see her alone first.â
âOkay. I can go to Mom and Dadâs. Call me when youâre finished and Iâll run by to get you.â I hope thatâs not the case. I plan on staying with her tonight.
âWish me luck, bro,â I tell Stout as he lets me out in front of Wrenâs building.
