âHeidi, I forgot my sign. Are you all right out here?â Aubrey asks. âIâll be right back.â
âSure,â I answer, without taking my eyes off the door.
Someone bumps my shoulder. No big deal. The place is crowded. Iâve been getting jostled all night.
âWhat are you doing here?â a gruff voice demands.
Slowly, I turn and find Bryce, red-faced and sweaty, glaring at me. âNone of your business.â I scan him from head to toe. âWhy are you here?â
He steps closer, his angry eyes practically shooting off sparks. âYouâre the reason I failed.â
âNo, youâre the reason you failed.â I take a step back but square my shoulders and lift my chin. âI did my work.â
He glances around us, but everyoneâs attention is on the fight in the ring.
âMy parents wonât pay my rent or car payments now. And I canât come up with the money I oweââ
âAnd I care about this, why?â
He lifts his hand in the air, curling his fingers.
âI wouldnât if I were you.â I stare him down. âMy manâs working security here. Heâs friends with the owners. You lay a finger on me, and youâre in for the ass-kicking of your life.â
That seems to stop him. Maybe heâs not the moron he pretends to be.
âDo you understand what you did to me?â I swear he sounds more like a whiny kid who had his toys taken away than a man in college. âI have to move home. I have to take another semesterââ
I hold up my hand, cutting him off. âIâm not interested in the problems of half-grown boys. Grow up and do the work, Bryce. Youâll graduate next year. Itâs not a big deal.â
Lord knows it took me long enough to finally graduate. Iâll be damned if this lazy jerk is going to make me feel bad about his predicament.
He leans down, and I instinctively jerk my body away. âIâll send those photos out. The hospital will take back that job offer.â
I try not to show any emotion. How did he even hear about my job? âGo ahead. I really donât give a fuck.â
His lips curve into a sinister smile. âDoes your husband know about the photos?â
I freeze.
His eyes widen, sparkling with evil glee. âHe doesnât, does he?â
I fake a casual pose. âI already told you, I want to give him one of the photos as a surprise wedding present.â
The muscle in his jaw twitches.
âYou should thank me for not telling my husband.â I glance at the door. âHeâll chew you up and shit you on the floor without blinking.â Maybe that was a vulgar, unladylike thing to say, but Iâve never claimed to be ladylike and I donât care about Bryceâs opinion.
âI hate you, bitch.â
âHate me all you want. But if youâre smart, you should fear me, too.â
âBack the fuck away.â Murphyâs deep, rumbling warning tone has me breathing a sigh of relief.
Bryce blinks a few times and backs up a step or ten at the sight of the glowering biker now invading his space.
I try not to take too much joy in Bryceâs obvious fear. âBryce was just congratulating me on graduating.â
Bryce continues to glare at me while Murphy wraps an arm around my shoulders.
âDo I know you?â Murphy asks.
Bryce shakes his head.
âThis doesnât seem like your scene.â Any smart person would take Murphyâs statement as a cue to get the fuck out.
âI have business here.â Bryce puffs out his chest, but his squeaky voice betrays him.
âThen take your business away from my wife.â Murphy glares at him until Bryce slinks off into the crowd.
âWho was that?â Murphy demands.
âA guy from school.â
He tugs me into the back room where a few fighters, waiting to go in the cage, are busy talking.
âA guy from school?â Murphy repeats slowly. âThen why did you look so scared when he was talking to you?â
âMe? Scared?â The phony laugh that comes out of my mouth makes me cringe.
âI know you, Heidi. Even from outside, I could see how uncomfortable he made you. Why? Whatâd he say to you?â
Nothing but some threats and blackmail.
I blow out a breath. This so isnât the time or place to have this conversation. âHeâs the one Dawn and I were working with on our group project.â
âYeah, and?â
âItâs nothing.â I glance around. âWe can talk about this at home. Youâre supposed to be working.â
âTalk about what at home?â He arches a brow. âHe ask you out? Say shit to you like that other kid?â
If only thatâs what Bryce did.
When I donât answer, Murphy tugs me deeper into the room, closing a door behind us and flipping on the light switch.
âDid he touch you?â
âBlake,â I plead. âYou have enough going on right now.â
âMeaning what?â
âYouâre up for VP. Trying to put together the support club. Building our house. Trying to get out of wearing a tux for our wedding.â
He doesnât laugh at my attempted joke. Just stands there waiting for an answer.
âNo, he never touched me.â I figure I better answer that question before Blake goes completely nuclear. âI didnât want to bug you with silly stuff.â
âIâll decide whatâs silly.â His face hardens. âTell me. Now.â
I shake my head. âI handled it.â
âHandled what?â
I blow out a breath and consider how to tell him in a way that wonât sign Bryceâs death warrant. I may hate the kid, but I donât want Blake to go to prison for Murder. And heâs already pissed-off enough to kill.
âDawn had to go to our professor and tell her Bryce wasnât doing his share of the project.â
âWhat does that have to do with you?â
; âHe thought I could convince Dawn to take it back? I donât know.â
âAnd?â
âHe wanted me to do his part of the project and tell the professor he did it.â
âHeidi, Iâm getting tired of pulling this out of you bit by bit,â Blake places his hands on his hips and stares me down. âSpit it all out. Now.â
âWhen I said no, he tried paying me to do his work, and I still said no.â
âAnd?â
Iâm tempted to say âthatâs it,â but Iâve already lied and hid this from him long enough. Besides, I know my man. Heâs stubborn. Relentless. Now that heâs on this path, he wonât back off until heâs uncovered every last slight against me.
âHe tried blackmailing me. I told him to get stuffed. Now heâs pissed because he didnât graduate on time.â I shrug. âSee, I told you. Stupid.â
His eyes narrow. âBlackmail you? With what?â
Fuck.
I bite my lip and canât meet his eyes. âSome stupid photos he took.â
âOf what?â
âYou and me.â
He reels back. âYou and me? When? Where?â
This is so much worse than I thought. âOne mustâve been a night I came to visit you at Furious,â I answer slowly. âThe others were the night we went to Zips.â
He stands there and absorbs the information. âThis fuckerâs been stalking you, and you didnât think I should know?â
âI didnât want toââ
âDonât you fucking dare spew any bullshit at me, Heidi.â He jabs his finger toward the door. âYou flipped the fuck out about me fighting. But you lied to me about someone trying to blackmail you?â
âI didnât lieââ
âBullshit!â He explodes. âAre you fucking kidding me?â
I blink. âItâs not the same. This is dangerous. I wasnât scared of him.â
âNo one threatens my girl.â I swear the windows rattle from the power of his voice alone.
âIt was school stuff. My school life. Not club business.â
âDoesnât matter.â He grabs the edges of his cut and jerks the leather. âYou think this is some magical cloak? That I stop protecting you if Iâm not wearing it?â
