âPlanning to have Malik wait for him upstairs instead?â
He grins. âMaybe.â
âWill it make you feel better to know I have something in mind to make sure he wonât be bothering any of your girls again?â
âI canât have someone that high-profile get roughed up in my house, Z.â
âI promise it wonât come back to you.â
He tilts his head, studying me while he considers my request. âHow unfriendly we talking?â
âBrutal.â
âHe hurt someone in the club? I didnât think he had anything to do with the local crime syndicate. Too good for us lowlifes and all.â He rolls his eyes.
âHe hurt someone close to me. Like you, I found out about it later than I wouldâve preferred.â
âAhhhh. Shit, Iâm sorry, Z. If weâd known, maybe one of us couldâveââ
âI donât think so, but I appreciate that.â I run my hand over my chin while I consider whether I want to ask my next question. âThe girl still work for you?â
âNah, she went back to school. The Green Street Crew scholarship fund is alive and well.â
It probably sounds like a self-serving fine line, but to my knowledge, Loco only runs girls who are there voluntarily. Itâs the only reason our clubâs looked the other way and allowed his âescort businessâ to operate in our territory. He treats them well and they bring in top dollar. The same philosophy we use running our strip club so his scholarship joke actually makes me laugh.
âGood to know.â
âYou know how we do here. I like to be a blip on their radar. The benevolent, kind-hearted gangster who gives âem a helping hand when they expect to be slapped down.â
âUh, okay. Thatâs not arrogant at all, Loco.â
He grins even wider. âLove makes the world go round, brother.â
âIâm surprised you and Sparky donât hang out more.â
âThat high-as-fuck ghost boy is welcome here anytime. You make sure he knows any girl he wants is on the house.â
âIâll be sure to tell him.â Jesus Christ, a chat with Loco is like visiting the Cheshire cat. âBack to the former Senator. Whatâs his type?â
âHeâs an interesting one. Tall, curvaceous brunettes are his thing. Usually they want big-titted blondes, but heâs very specific in his tastes.â
A sick feeling rolls through my stomach. I donât want to press for more details even though I need to.
âWhat else?â
âChrist, Z. You want gory details? He likes choking âem til they pass out. Figure he must not want âem laughing at his tiny dick or something.â
My throatâs so tight, I can barely speak. It hurts to crack a smile and make a joke right now. âGet your psychology degree in your spare time?â
âDonât need no degree to know how some of these sick fuckers work.â His gaze strays to the wall behind me where Iâm guessing that loud ticking is coming from. âYou want me to call you if I hear from him? Set up a date?â
âHave him come here.â
âOh, trust me, I ainât never sending another one of my girls to his place.â
âBut heâs been here before?â
âYeah, after he messed up Vanessa. I still didnât know and I let him in.â He pounds his fist against the desk. âFucker.â
âHe hurt the girl he saw here?â
âNot as bad, but if Iâd known thatâs what heâs into, I wouldâve provided him with a different girl. It was a little more than Nikki signed up for.â
âShe okay?â
âSheâs still here. I wonât set him up with her again though.â His eyes shine with murderous intent. âMaybe I will and Iâll be waiting for him instead.â
âI need him occupied for at least half an hour.â
âIâll keep him occupied.â He cocks his head. âAnd if he doesnât call?â
âThen Iâll have to figure out another way in.â
With Loco on board, I want to sit down with my brothers and discuss how things will go down.
Smokeâs bitching all those weeks ago about how we should return to the old ways has stuck with me.
Wrath, Rock, Murphy, and Teller meet me at the war room table.
They donât need a lot of information. I wouldnât be coming to them, asking to murder someone in Kellyâs league unless it was bad.
âThatâs why she left?â Wrath asks.
âPretty much. The government wanted her to cooperate but she couldnât stand seeing him day after day. Or risk it.â
âFuck.â Teller shakes his head and stares down at his hands.
âShe didnât want you taking care of it, because of how close he was being watched,â Murphy says.
âRight.â
âExplains California,â Wrath says. Heâs taken this much more calmly and with a lot less skepticism than I expected.
When I question him, he shrugs. âWhy the fuck would she lie about that? She gains nothing by telling you now. Assuming youâre telling the truth and you two were finally going stop fucking around, she blew up her entire life to get away from him. I believe her.â
His answer makes me laugh for a solid minute. Itâs really not what I expected out of Wrath. âSpeaking of blowing up shit, how about a nice, old-fashioned car bomb?â I suggest.
Rock raises his eyebrows. âYou donât want to gut this fucker personally?â
âI do, but with him under so much scrutiny, I canât take the risk.â
âAnd a car bomb will be under the radar?â Murphy shakes his head. âThatâll attract a lot of attention.â
âWe can wait until heâs insideâ¦â Teller suggests.
âNo,â Rock answers. âTony says even if heâs convicted, he wonât do much time. Even if he does, itâll be in a federal facility.â
âYou fucking kidding me?â Murphy shakes his head. âFucking governmentâs more criminal than we are.â
âHell, give the guy a few years. Heâll probably get re-elected and do it all over again,â Wrath says. âTheyâre all fuckinâ crooks.â
âLetâs save the political discussion for later.â Rock taps the table. âCar bombing, huh? LOKI havenât gone that route in a long time.â
Meaning no one currently in our club has any bomb-making skills.
âRooster can do it.â
âYou want to involve him?â Murphy asks.
âI trusted him enough to make him VP,â I remind everyone. âHeâs had our backs down there. Heâs cautious too. Didnât bring the Shadow issue up until he had solid proof even though he knew I wasnât happy with Shadow.â
âI donât know him as well as you do, Z, but I trust your judgment,â Wrath says. âBesides, itâs your ass, ultimately.â
âThanks for the reminder.â
Wrath runs his fingers over his beard a few times and flashes a sinister smile. âCar bombâs nice. Should scare the piss out of all those corrupt fucks. Theyâll assume itâs related to the trial.â He nods at Rock. âOr the lack of justice.â
âRight. That was my other thought. Heâs got so many people gunning for him, thereâs no reason to look my way. And like you said, itâs a method we havenât used in decades.â
âYou canât do it anywhere someone else is gonna get hurt. Thatâs what got that club in Idaho in so much shit,â Teller reminds me.
âIâm aware. Trust me, brother, I donât want any collateral damage. Just this guy.â I nudge Rock with my elbow. âLoco had some good insight for me. I think planting the bomb at his place and setting it off at the Senatorâs home will be the way to go.â
âSounds good.â Rock shakes his head. âEven if Loco puts the pieces together once itâs done, heâs sure as fuck not going to snitch on anyone.â
âLocoâs crazy, but heâs not dumb,â Wrath says. âHeâll put the pieces together fast.â
âTrust me, heâs got no love lost for this guy. Heâll probably congratulate me.â
Chapter Forty
; Lilly
The guys have âclub businessâ to attend to so I end up at Hopeâs house, helping Heidi sort through wedding stuff while the kids play together. Well, really, they play near each other. Alexa showed Chance which toys of hers he was allowed to touch when we got here.
âI like her spunk,â I say to Heidi.
âNotice it was the âboy toysâ she gave him. Iâve been giving her all the gender-neutral toys and clothes andââ
âSheâs a girly-girl?â
Heidi laughs. âYup. But at least she picked it out for herself. I didnât force it on her.â
