Page 10 of One Empire Night (Lost Kings MC 9.5)
Marcel doubles over, shaking with laughter. âShe definitely takes after Heidi.â
Scooting forward, I hook my finger in his waistband. âI believe you said something about a Christmas orgasm.â
All teasing disappears and he focuses on me. âYes, I did.â
After Charlotte and I exchange Christmas orgasms in the showerânot an easy feat when Iâm pretty sure Blake was downstairs running all the hot water taps to hurry us alongâwe head downstairs.
âMorning!â Heidi shouts. Sheâs blur of plaid flannel pajamas and wild hair as she barrels into me for a hug. âSorry if we woke you up.â
I squeeze her tight and muss her hair. âSleep okay, bed head?â
She smacks my hand away with a smile. âYouâve got your own bed head going on, smart guy,â she says, jumping up to rub her hand over my head.
âBreakfast or presents?â Murphy yells from the kitchen.
âBetter do breakfast first. Alexa wonât let you in another year or so,â Charlotte says.
âThatâs what I thought too.â Heidi grabs Charlotteâs hand and then mine, dragging us into the kitchen. âThatâs why I already started pre-heating the oven. I hope thatâs okay?â
âThatâs fine,â Charlotte says. âThank you.â
Murphy has coffee poured for everyone, and after picking Alexa up and settling into one of the kitchen chairs, I heckle him for being so domesticated.
Charlotte narrows her eyes at me. âAre you trying to pretend you donât have dinner ready almost every night when I get home from work?â
âListen, ginger wonder-twins,â I say, pointing at the two of them. âNo more of this conspiring nonsense.â I shift my gaze to Charlotte. âAnd you. What happens in our kitchen, stays in our kitchen.â
âEee!â Alexa squeals.
âSee, even Alexa agrees with me.â
Murphy grunt-laughs and slaps me on the back before setting a carton of creamer on the table.
Heidi hugs me from behind, wrapping her arms around my neck and practically choking me. âAww, I knew my big brother would be good husband material for some lucky lady one day.â She kisses my cheek before racing back to the stove.
âLucky lady with the patience of a saint,â Murphy adds.
âDa!â Alexa reaches for Murphy and he rubs a hand over her head. Then rubs his knuckles over my head.
âKnock it off,â I mutter, slapping him away.
The loud chatter of my favorite girls and warm scents of Christmas breakfast fill the kitchen. Murphy takes the chair to my left and together we watch Charlotte and Heidi.
âIs Carter coming over?â he asks.
âI think so.â
Charlotte turns around. âBianca needed him to pick her up again last night.â She rolls her eyes. âSo she might be joining us too.â
âYou trust her?â Murphy asks me.
I shrug. Iâve only met the girl a couple times in passing. She seems nice enough.
âAt our house, yes,â Charlotte answers. âWith my brotherâs heart, not so much.â
Murphy snorts. âIs he interested in getting into her heart or her pants?â
âEwww,â Charlotte groans. âBoth probably.â
âAww,â Heidi sighs. âHeâs so sweet. I hope sheâs not using him.â
Murphy shakes his head.
Breakfast is loud and delicious. Heidi makes this breakfast-bread-pudding thing that Iâm sorry I teased her about last night when she prepped it.
âI can admit when Iâm wrong, little sis. This was worth all the work you did last night.â
âThank you.â She grins and pushes the glass dish my way again.
âOh my God. You two need to stay over more often,â Charlotte says. âI could get used to this.â
Heidi laughs. âThen it wouldnât be as special.â
After breakfast, Murphy and I clean up while Heidi takes care of Alexa and Charlotte brings presents downstairs. We meet up in the living room to exchange gifts.
âMarcel first,â Heidi yells, dropping a sparkling green package in my lap. âBecause youâre the oldest.â
âActually, Charlotte is,â I point out.
âThatâs okay.â Charlotte waves her hand at me. âYou go first.â
âCareful,â Heidi says, watching me intently.
Pushing layers of tissue paper aside, I uncover a heavy ten-inch blade. I grip it by the clearly custom-made blue and dark gray handle, turning it over. âIs it a Battle Mistress?â
âYup.â
Overwhelmed, I meet her eager eyes. âHeidi, it must have been really expensive.â
Her cheeks flush. âI wanted to get you something nice. And I have a job now, you know.â
Charlotte touches my side. âHoly shit, Heidi. I donât know if he can handle something so big.â
Still a little choked up, I ignore Charlotteâs teasing, even though I know itâs her way of telling me to say thank you instead of questioning my sister.
âBlake said you lost your good hunting knife this year.â She gingerly takes it from me, testing its weight. âThe guy I ordered it from said itâs sturdy enough to behead a moose with.â
I laugh and take it back from her. âWe donât have moose around here.â
She shrugs. âYou never know.â
I pull Heidi in and kiss her forehead. âThank you. I really love it. I always wanted one. I didnât know they came in different colors.â
Eyes sparkling and happy smile in place, she moves on to passing out other gifts.
Murphy and I donât usually exchange gifts. He and Heidi left their gifts for each other at Rock and Hopeâs, so soon weâre on to spoiling the shit out of Alexa. Overwhelmed from the sheer number of toys and clothes we heap on her, she ends up passing out in a pile of wrapping paper. Heidi scoops her up, settling her daughter in her arms to watch her snooze.
This is the kind of Christmas I wanted Heidi to have when she was a kid. I always tried, but it never seemed good enough.
âYou all right, bro?â Murphy says, sitting next to me.
âIâm glad you guys are here. Thanks.â
âThatâs my gift to you,â he jokes.
I tap the box with my knife in it. âYou shouldnât have let her spend that much money.â
âShouldnât have let her? Youâve met your sister, right?â He takes the lid off the box. âI think Rock helped her order it. Did you notice the blade?â
I pull it out and examine it closer. Our clubâs skull and crown are engraved near the handle with my initials underneath.
âWow.â
âYeah, so, you know, donât go gutting anyone with it.â
I choke on a laugh and Heidi glances up. âWhat?â
âNothing. Your boyfriend pointed out the engraving.â
She rolls her eyes. âFiancé. Weâre close to setting a date, you know.â
âYour old man pointed out the engraving.â
âWow,â Murphy says. âThat might be the first time youâve said it without turning green.â
âShut up.â I shove him into the pile of pillows at the end of the couch and he jabs his foot into my leg. âGet your smelly feet off me.â
He kicks me harder.
âBoys, please,â Charlotte warns, breaking us up and sitting in between us.
Carter knocks on the side door and Charlotte gets up to let him in. I take the opportunity to tackle Murphy and wrestle him down to the floor.
We bump into Heidi, jostling Alexa awake and she lets out a scream, stopping both of us.
Heidi glares and holds out my niece. âYou woke her, you can have her.â
âDid I wake you, baby?â I ask in the mushy voice I only use with Alexa. She stops fussing and settles into my hold, reaching for one of her new toys.
Murphy pulls Heidi into his lap and she fusses over him like he just returned from battle.
âWhoa,â Carter says, joining us. âLooks like Christmas exploded in here.â
âMerry Christmas, Ca
rter,â Heidi says. Her gaze drops to Carter and Biancaâs entwined hands and she grins. âYou must be Bianca. Hi.â
âThanks for letting me join your family, Mr. Whelan,â Bianca says. I canât tell if the breathy tone she uses is supposed to be sexy or the result of a hangover.
Iâm not sure how I feel about being called Mr. Whelan or having this chick in my house, but itâs Christmas, so I try not to be a grouch about it.
âYour sisterâs been waiting for you.â I nod to a small stack of presents by the tree.
For a second itâs awkward because I donât think anyone has anything for Bianca, but then Charlotte appears with a package. âI wasnât sure if Iâd see you today or not,â she says, handing it to Bianca.
âThank you, Char.â
A couple hours later, itâs time to clean up and get moving. âI told Rock weâd be over by noon.â
Heidi stands and wipes bits of paper off her legs. âI doubt theyâre up yet.â
âI need to go to my parentsâ,â Bianca says, turning to Carter. âYou can join me.â
âUh,â he glances at me. âIâm supposed to goââ
âYou can show up whenever you want, Carter. No big deal.â
I canât tell if heâs relieved or he wanted me to give him an excuse for why he canât go.
Charlotte frets over it after they leave, until I pull her aside. âHeâs a big boy.â
âI know, I just donât want him getting hurt.â
âHe looked happy,â Murphy says.
âHe looked confused,â Heidi corrects.
I nudge the girls toward the stairs. âGo start getting ready or weâre going to be late.â
Murphy shakes his head after they disappear. âPoor bastard. Howâs he supposed to get laid with his sister right next door and in his business?â
âMaybe I should introduce him to some bunnies later.â
âNo bunnies at the clubhouse tonight, bro.â He shakes his head. âNo available ones anyway.â
âCome on. Letâs get ready. Rockâs gonna be annoyed if weâre late.â
âLast present!â Hope calls out. She makes a big show of reading the tag, even though we wrapped it ourselves last night. âItâs for you, Heidi!â
âMe?â she asks, accepting the small box Hope hands her.
Teller glances at me and raises an eyebrow. I shrug as if I have no idea. While Heidi, Murphy, and Alexa spent the night at Teller and Charlotteâs place, leaving Hope and I to a Christmas Eve aloneâwhich we took full advantage ofâthey all showed up at the house before noon for Christmas brunch and gift unwrapping.
Intrigued by the box in Heidiâs hands, Alexa crawls out of my lap and over to Heidi, plopping down in front her. âYou want to help?â Heidi asks.
Alexa squees and rips at the paper, but Murphy scoops her up before she starts stuffing the bow in her mouth.
âOh my God!â Heidi yelps. âTickets to Country Fest?â
âWell, Murphy said youâve never been to a concert,â Hope says. âAnd I know you like Dawson Roads a lot.â
âBut these must have cost a fortune, Hope. They always sell out right away.â
Hope just smiles. Sheâd gone to a lot of trouble and was pretty damn excited to score the tickets to the big country music festival that happens every year about an hour north of us.
âThatâs really cool. Thanks, Hope,â Murphy says.
âOh, wait.â Heidiâs eyes widen. âThereâre four tickets here.â
Hope glances at Teller and Charlotte. âI figured youâd want to go with another couple or something.â
âYou donât want to come with us?â Heidi asks.
Well aware of my aversion to large, obnoxious crowds of drunk wanna-be cowboys, Hope waves the suggestion away. âYou donât want the old couple tagging along.â
âHey.â I poke her in the side.
Ignoring me, she continues, âBesides, weâll watch Alexa for you.â
Heidi reaches over, hugging Hope. âAre you sure? Youâll have enough of your own stuff going on this summer.â
âIâm sure.â
âIf we canât, for some reason,â I say, glancing at Hope. âYou know Wrath and Trin will always watch her.â
âI know. I just hateââ
Heidiâs protest is cut off by the couple in question knocking, then coming in without waiting for an answer.
âMerry Christmas!â Trinity yells.
I stand and pull Hope up off the floor with me, so she can hug Trinity.
They have a bag of gifts for Alexa. She half-crawls, half-walks over to show off her bright red dress.
âLook at you in the fancy dress!â Trinity says, picking Alexa up and giving as many kisses as she receives. âDid Santa bring you lots of goodies?â
Alexa nods vigorously.
âDid you leave cookies out for Santa?â Wrath asks.
âCoo-coos!â Alexa giggles and points to our dining room table.
Trinity sets her down and Wrath hands over the bag. Alexaâs thrilled to have more wrapping paper to shred and toss in the air.
âI think the unwrapping is her favorite part,â Charlotte says.
Zâs next to pop in and Alexa squeals in delight at the big red and white Santa cap heâs wearing.
âThat hat makes you look like a male stripper,â Wrath says.
âDonât be jealous that I thought of it and you didnât,â Z quips, bending down to pick up Alexa and swing her around. âAre you having a good Christmas?â
âYaya!â
âOh my God,â Heidi laughs. âI swore ânoâ was going to be her answer to every question for the rest of her life. Thank you, Z.â
Teller and Murphy help pick up the stray bits of paper and arrange all the opened presents under the tree.
âClubhouse is packed,â Z says. âSwanâs got everything started in the kitchen, but I think sheâs waiting for you two.â He nods to Trinity and Heidi.
âWe were all about to head over,â I say.
Charlotte groans. âI donât know if I can eat any more food today.â
âLet me go put the tickets in my room,â Heidi says. âSo Alexa doesnât end up making confetti out of them.â
âGood plan,â Teller says.
Wrath, Trinity, and Z head over to the clubhouse first.
Hope runs upstairs to change and I follow.
âYouâre okay going over there for the afternoon, right?â I ask.
She stares at my reflection in the mirror while brushing her hair. âOf course I am. Iâve been looking forward to dinner with everyone.â
I wrap my arms around her middle and pull her against me. âYou look pretty, Mrs. North.â
âThank you.â
Digging in my pocket, I take out one last present. âI have something else for you.â
âI donât think we have time for you to show me your pole again, Mr. North.â
Laughing so hard I almost drop the box, I shake my head. âNo, youâll get my pole again later.â
She opens the box and her eyes light up. âThe North Star.â She pulls out the heavy silver pendant with a solitary diamond in the middle. âAww, itâs beautiful.â
âIt matches your bracelet.â
She lifts her arm to show me sheâs wearing the bracelet today. âI love it.â She presses a kiss to my cheek. âIt reminds me of you, lighting up our journey together.â
âA constant reminder how much I love you,â I add.
She turns and lifts her hair so I can slip the necklace around her neck and fix the clasp. âThank you.â
Downstairs, everyoneâs bundled up and ready to trudge through the snow to the clubhouse.
âZ cleared a trail earlier, but itâs already getting covered over,â Teller says.
âWell, we can always stay at the clubhouse if it keeps coming down this hard,â Hope answers.
Murphy snorts at the look on my face. âI think Rock will shovel you a path home before he stays there.â
&nbs
p; âAmen to that,â I mutter.
âThnow! Tees!â Alexa yells twisting and turning in Murphyâs arms. She yanks her hat off and tosses it at Teller. Her mittens go flying next and Heidi stops to pick them up.
âI donât know why I bother,â she mutters.
âYou did the same thing when you were her age,â Teller says. âKarma never forgets.â
âShut up.â A sneaky smile flashes across her face and she stuffs Alexaâs mittens in her pocket, then scoops up a handful of snow, balling it up and flinging it at Tellerâs back.
âOh no you didnât, little sister!â he yells.
âChrist, keep walking, Charlotte, or youâre going to end up covered in snow,â Murphy advises, picking up his pace.
Keeping Hope out of snowball range isnât easy. âKnock it off, you two, before someone gets hurt,â I growl as one goes flying past my face.
âUh oh, who did Dad have to yell at now?â Wrath asks, popping up at the end of the trail.
âShut up,â Teller snaps, flinging the snowball heâd been preparing for Heidi at Wrath instead.
The ball of snow explodes against Wrathâs chest and he calmly glances down and brushes the remnants off his coat. âFeeling suicidal today, little brother?â he asks in a grave tone.
Heidi runs ahead to catch up with Murphy. âGood luck with that, Marcel!â she shouts.
Charlotte rolls her eyes and stops to pat Wrath on the arm. âDo what you gotta do, big guy. I brought an extra change of clothes for him.â
âWhat am I, five?â Tellers says.
âYou did just lob a snowball at your big brother,â Charlotte teases, sticking her tongue out at him.
âDo that again, woman. I have a better place for you to stick that tongue.â
When we reach Wrath, Hope shakes her head. âGet him later when he least expects it.â
An evil smile spreads across Wrathâs face.
I groan and roll my eyes. âWhy are you encouraging him, Baby Doll?â
Zâs dogs are romping through the snow in front of the clubhouse. He throws a few snowballs and they race after them.
Inside the clubhouse isnât any less chaotic. The whole familyâs here. Even Charlotteâs brother, Carter decided to join us.
Alexaâs excited to see Bricksâ and Winterâs kids. Murphy sets her down to play, but keeps a close eye on her.
