I snort out a laugh. âThatâs probably inevitable.â
âDo you still blame yourself for Mariellaâs death?â she asks quietly.
âDonât. I canât go there.â
âI know you, Marcel. You think Iâm still a kid, but you can always talk to me too.â
Unlikely. Iâm about to brush off her offer, but instead I ask, âYou really think Charlotte and I make sense?â
âMore sense than any bunny youâve ever been with.â
I shake my head, realizing Iâm embarrassed to have this talk with my little sister. âItâs not the same.â
âDuh. Sheâs not afraid to tell you to fuck off. Thatâs what youâve been missing.â
After all the tension I caused this morning, her observation makes me laugh until my gut aches.
âSheâs not impressed by this.â Heidi pokes her finger into my cut. âShe likes whatâs underneath.â
I raise an eyebrow and she shoves me away. âThatâs not the way I meant it.â
âI know what you meant, Heidi.â
âEverything okay?â Murphy calls out as he walks toward us. He stops next to Heidi, setting his hand on her shoulder. She leans into him and for the first time, I appreciate how good they are for each other instead of thinking about myself.
She stares up at him with the adoring look sheâs always reserved for Murphy, but sheâs right, itâs different now. Theyâre together. In sync with each other. A couple.
Theyâre bonded together by time and friendship.
And other stuff I donât want to think about.
An apology burns in the back of my throat, but I owe it to him. âIâm sorry, Blake.â
âYou donât need to apologize to me, brother.â He tilts his head toward Heidi, making it clear what he expects.
âAlready done.â
The fucker actually looks to Heidi to confirm and it makes me laugh. âI see how itâs gonna be. Two against one now, huh?â
Heidi pushes my shoulder, then nods toward the front door.
I turn and find Charlotte coming down the stairs toward us. âCan I join you?â she calls out before walking closer.
âYeah,â Murphy waves her over. âCome here.â He holds out his fist and she taps her knuckles against his. âGinger power.â They both crack up and I groan. God only knows what they talked about while they were alone.
Standing, I wrap my arm around Charlotteâs waist and tug her against me. âNope. Two against one is bad enough. Iâm not having three against me.â
Charlotte tips her head back, smiling up at me. Pure sunshine. âIâm always team Teller.â
âEven when Iâm a jerk?â
âDefinitely. Thatâs when you need me most.â
Heidi taps her foot against my leg and mouths, âRide or die.â
CHAPTER THIRTY
The guys are called into church a few hours later, leaving me alone with Hope and Trinity.
Part of me wishes Iâd gone with Heidi when she left the clubhouse.
âIs it usually Saturday morning?â I ask Hope more out of nerves than actual interest in when the club sits down to discuss business.
Trinity sort of frowns at my question and I realize my mistake.
âI just meant, the last couple Saturdays heâs had to leave, but it works out because thatâs when I do brunch with my bestie.â Jesus, someone duct tape my mouth shut.
While Hopeâs been friendly and welcoming, Trinityâs harder. Since sheâs Wrathâs wife, that doesnât surprise me. I should probably be relieved she hasnât hung me up by my toes and tried to pry information out of me with a nail file. She and Hope are clearly besties. Maybe Hopeâs acceptance of me will influence Trinityâs opinion, which will influence her husbandâs.
Hey, a girl can dream.
âHave you been to physical therapy with him yet?â Trinity asks.
âNo. I think he goes during the week when Iâm working.â
She chuckles. âHe probably doesnât want Violet roping you in to keeping track of his exercises.â
The familiar way she talks about such a mundane aspect of Tellerâs life hits me in an awkward way. Tellerâs whole âdonât pull at this threadâ comment returns with startling clarity.
âYou seem to know an awful lot about it.â
Trinity narrows her eyes at my tone. âWe all spent a lot of time there when he was re-learning how to walk.â
âYour husband didnât mind?â
Trinity turns her head, giving Hope a who is this bitch? look.
âCharlotte,â Hope warns, but Iâm too stubborn to stop and listen.
Trinity places a hand on her hip. âYou have something you want to say to me, Charlotte?â
Hope places her hand on Trinityâs arm. âTrin, maybe we shouldââ
Focusing on Trinity and ignoring Hope, I ask, âWere you involved with Teller?â
âInvolved?â Trinityâs bitter laugh frazzles my last thread of common sense. âArenât you precious.â
âDid you fuck him?â I ask in a low voice. âIs that better?â
Her nostrils flare and her non-answer is all the answer I need.
âHow the fuck does that even work?â I snarl. âHow do you fuck one brother and marry another one?â
Trinity steps closer, making me wish Iâd listened to Hopeâs warning. âWho the fuck do you think you are questioning me? Iâve been here ten years. Youâve been here, what, ten minutes? And you think you have the right to throw attitude at me over something you know nothing about?â
âIââ
âIâm married. I donât know what Teller was thinking sharing that with you, but itâs way the fuck in the past.â
âIt better be.â Wow. I really wish I hadnât said that.
Trinity takes another step closer. Her voice drops into a deadlier tone that honestly scares me a little. âYou remember the Vipers?â
I nod, remembering Tellerâs story.
âThatâs the kind of club I grew up around. What do you think my childhood was like, princess? Maybe you should set aside all the stories your mommy told you about club girls and think before you open your mouth.â
My throat works, but no words come out. Iâd had a small taste of that treatment from my own club and it wrecked me. If Trinity went through years of thatâ¦
When I donât respond, she storms down the hall. I turn to Hope, looking for someone to explain myself to, but she shakes her head.
âThat was uncalled for, Charlotte.â
Hopeâs someone I admire a lot. Somehow she makes the attorney/outlaw lifestyle work.
Her disapproval shames the hell out of me.
Itâs not unusual to find Trinity waiting outside the war room after church.
What is unusual is to find her without Hope, pissed off, and apparently waiting for me, not Wrath.
My heart doesnât give the familiar painful kick it used to at the sight of her. Iâm too busy wondering where Charlotte is and if she kept herself out of trouble.
By the look on Trinityâs face, I have a feeling the answer is no, Charlotte did not keep herself out of trouble.
âYou need to get ahold of your woman, Teller.â Sheâs not quite shouting, but sheâs loud and her cheeks are pink with anger.
âWhatââ
She leans in closer and lowers her voice. âWhat the fuck were you thinking sharing ancient fucking history with her?â
âI didnât.â Although I might as well have.
âWhatâs going on?â Wrath asks from behind me. Great. Perfect.
What the fuck did Charlotte do?
Wrath sidesteps me and wraps an arm around Trinity. âWhatâs wrong?â
âWhatâs wrong is,â Trinity says without taking her eyes off me. âTellerâs girl needs to learn some respect. If she ever comes at me again the way she just did, I will kick the ever-loving shit out of her. You feeling me, Teller?â
âWhat the fuck happened?â Wrath demands.
âTr
inââ I start, but Wrath snarls at me and I snap my mouth shut.
Rock, Z, and Murphy emerge from the war room. âWhatâs the matter?â Rock asks.
Trinityâs cheeks turn even redder and I swear her eyes fill with tears, which upsets me more than maybe it should. Trinityâs not a crier. Maybe Iâm not in love with her anymore, but I sure as fuck donât want to be responsible for her tears.
Without answering, she spins around and storms out of the clubhouse, slamming the door behind her.
Wrath steps into my space. âWhatever the fuck happened, you better fix it so it doesnât happen again. No one disrespects my wife and they sure as fuck donât do it in my clubhouse, brother.â
âI got it.â
âHandle your girl,â he warns before taking off after Trinity.
Murphyâs hand settles on my shoulder, squeezing gently. He doesnât say anything, just quietly offers support. Fuck me. Wrathâs already not cool with Charlotte being here. This doesnât help her cause.
Z shoots a glare at me. âYou swore sheâd behave herself.â
Right, I took responsibility for Charlotte, so I definitely have some sort of punishment coming my way.
Hope joins us in the living room âWhat the hell happened?â Rock asks.
Her gaze lands on me and she shakes her head. âCharlotteâ¦said some things she didnât mean to Trinity.â A very diplomatic answer from our presidentâs wife. I appreciate her not painting Charlotte as a complete villain.
I still feel like a jerk though.
Why didnât I man up and answer her honestly? Instead, I left Charlotte conflicted and turned her loose. Burying the past seemed like the best approach. But it backfired and I ended up hurting people I care about.
Again.
âWhereâs Trin?â Hope asks.
Z points at the door. âShe left with Wrath.â
She and Rock huddle together, speaking in low tones, so I turn to Murphy. âWhat the fuck? Are all women crazy?â
âYes,â he answers with a straight face. âThatâs why we love âem.â He drops his voice a little lower. âBut, brother, Trinity doesnât deserve that shit. Neither does Wrath.â
âYeah, I know,â I growl.
âYou better fix it.â
âWhere is she, Hope?â I ask, interrupting her conversation with Rock. He glares at me and I wager Iâm about five seconds away from having a size thirteen boot on my neck.
âSheâs still in the dining room,â Hope answers. No judgment in her tone. At least someone isnât pissed with me.
As I pass her, she reaches out and squeezes my arm.
Charlotteâs misery surrounds her when I find her huddled up at one of the dining room tables.
She lifts her gaze. âI fucked up,â she says almost immediately.
I pull out the chair next to her and drop into it. âThatâs one way to put it. What the fuck happened?â
She sits back. âI donât know. I couldnât stop thinking about how evasive you were. Then this morning with your sisterâ¦â
âI shouldâve been honest. Iâm sorry. I thought it was better to bury it for everyoneâs sake. It really is ancient history.â
âShe mentioned how sheâs been to physical therapy with you and it sounded so familiar. I snapped.â
âYou wanna go to PT with me that bad?â I tease.
Sheâs not in a joking mood. âYou obviously had real feelings for her.â
âA long, long time ago. I was a dumb-ass kid though. Too stupid to do anything about it.â
Her mouth turns down. âDo you wish you had?â
âNo. Not anymore. Sheâs where she should be. We werenât right for each other.â
She shakes her head. âClub girls donât usually become olâ ladies.â
âThatâs not your business.â
She stares at me for a few seconds before sitting up straight. âYouâre right. Iâm always bitching about misogyny in the legal profession. For fuckâs sake, I wrote my college thesis on slut-shaming in the media. And I behaved in a way Iâve always despised.â She drops her head, staring at her hands in her lap, hair covering her face. âIâm sorry.â
That was a lot of information to take in and part of me wonders what the fuck Iâm even doing with a woman like Charlotte. âItâs not me you need to apologize to.â
She picks her head up, staring me straight in the eye. âYes I do. I probably made things hella awkward between you and one of your brothers.â
âWellââ Wrathâs probably busy warming up his fists for my face.
âWhereâd she go? Iâll apologize right now.â
Now this is not what I expected. I figured sheâd dig her heels in. Maybe trash talk Trinity. Try to make me feel even shittier while she was at it.
I figured we were over.
Thatâs not Charlotteâs style. She fucked up and sheâs owning it. Already trying to make it right.
Thereâs not a lot of room for fuck-ups in our world. But thereâs absolutely no room for people who donât own up to their mistakes.
Slapping her palm on the table, Charlotte stands. âIs she out there?â she asks, gesturing toward the living room.
âNo. I think she and Wrath headed home.â
âWill you walk me over to their house?â She gives me a sheepish smile thatâs sweet as hell. âTrinity seems like the type of chick who might shoot me on sight.â
Her eagerness to get this done right nowâ¦well, once again Iâm impressed with Charlotte.
âYeah, come on.â I take her hand and lead her out through the kitchen to the side door. Iâd rather avoid anyone whoâs still lingering in the living room. She doesnât question me.
Once weâre on the path out to Wrathâs house, she opens up. âTrinity said she grew up in a club like the Vipers.â
âI donât know anything about that.â
âHow is that possible?â
âI told you, I was a dumb kid.â Too selfish to ask questions.
Wrathâs outside when we walk up to the house. He shoots a glare at Charlotte before speaking to me. âWhy you here, welterweight?â
Welterweight. Better than fuckhead. So heâs probably not going to kill me.
Charlotte drops my hand and takes a few steps forward, which considering the arctic expression Wrathâs wearing, is pretty damn brave. âI came to apologize to Trinity.â
He cocks his head. âTell me something. You go after my wife because I gave you a hard time last night?â
Charlotte blinks, like that never occurred to her. Her body leans into me the smallest amount. âNo,â she finally answers.
Wrath watches her for a few minutes. His gaze slides my way and back to Charlotte before he finally nods.
Their front door opens and Trinity stands on the porch, arms over her chest. She takes the steps slowly and moves to Wrathâs side where he places his arm around her shoulders.
âWhat?â she asks Charlotte.
My girl isnât prepared to do this in front of both of us. Wrath seems to sense that and leans over to kiss Trinityâs temple before turning my way.
âCome here. Letâs find some firewood for you to chop.â
And here comes my punishment.
Trinity and I watch as Wrath leads Teller away from us with a hand at the back of his neck.
âIs that his punishment?â I ask.
Slowly, Trinity turns and faces me. âWhat?â
âChopping wood.â
She snorts and finally grins. âProbably.â The smile slides off her face. âWhy are you here, Charlotte?â
âTo apologize. I never should haveââ
She jerks her head toward the steps and I follow her over. From our spot, sitting at the top of the stairs, we can see Wrath and Teller at the wood pile.
âWyattâs everything to me,â she says softly. âAnd we wasted a lot of years that we could have been together, doing stupid shit to hurt each other.â She turns her big, amber eyes my way and theyâre filled with pa
in. Pain, I contributed to with my thoughtless words and I feel even worse. âYou bringing that up this morning, reminded me of things Iâd really rather forget.â
Another âIâm sorryâ seems inadequate, but itâs fine because Trinity isnât finished.
âBesides, Iâm sure itâs not a real comfortable topic for Teller either.â
Those words trigger an avalanche of questions.
âDid you love him?â
Her eyes turn hard. âChrist, youâre a persistent bitch. No. I care about him. I consider him a friend. But thatâs it.â
Unrequited love. Does that make her his one that got away?
âHe didnât love me either,â she adds.
âAre you sure?â
âYes. I was an older woman whoââ
âWhoâs,â I wave my hand in front of her, âfucking perfect.â
âIâm not perfect,â she answers in a low voice. âNot even close. And back then I was a mess.â She shifts, tucking her leg under her like sheâs settling in for a long conversation. âI think for a relationship to work you need three things.â
I wait for her to list them.
âLoyalty. Respect. Communication. And you need to have all three at the same time.â She stops and stares at me to make sure Iâm following along. âIâd die for this club. For Wyatt, Iâd do anything. No question. Theyâve had my loyalty since day one.â She forces a bittersweet smile.
âThe club or Wrath?â
She thinks on that for a second or two. âSame thing, Charlotte. The club comes with the man.â
âWrath said something similar.â
âIâm not surprised.â She stops and takes a few breaths. âThe things we did to each other were pretty disrespectful and shitty for a while. Tellerâs kind of a casualty there, because he didnât know about Wyatt and me and I feel bad about that. Which brings us to communication. Wyatt and I fucked up all over the place on that one.â
Her gaze strays back to Wrath and I follow her line of sight, watching her husband chop wood. Shirtless.
âMy God, how can you get anything done around here?â
She glances at me a slight frown wrinkling her brow until she realizes Iâm joking. âItâs not easy.â
