âIâm ignoring everything else because itâs bullshit.â
She tugs on her bottom lip with her teeth.
âYou ever think maybe Iâm worried about getting involved with you, because Iâm no good for you, Charlotte? Not for the bullshit reasons youâre thinking, but because Iâm a fuck up who fails everyone I care about. So maybe Iâm scared too.â
The defiant way she juts out her chin tells me I struck a nerve. âI didnât say I was scared.â
âPlease, youâre so fucking scared youâre trying to shove me out the door as fast as you can.â
âYou just said you didnât want to stay.â
âDo you have a hearing problem?â I snarl out the words and push her up against the kitchen counter. âThatâs not what I said at all.â
She places her palms against my chest but doesnât push me back.
I place my hands against his chest. At first to push him back, but I donât have it in me. My right hand rests over his heart, the thrumming under my palm indicating how serious he is. Whateverâs going on in his head isnât easy to share.
âWhat did you mean then?â
He runs his hands through his hair and takes a step back. âNothing. Forget it.â
âMarcel, please. I want to trust you. I already like you so much.â
His palm slides down over his leg, something I donât even think heâs conscious of and it triggers a question from me.
âTell me about your accident.â
He slides his gazeânow waryâmy way. âWhat about it?â
âWhat happened?â
His jaw tightens.
âWas anyone with you?â
He swallows hard and turns away, leaning over and gripping the back of one of my kitchen chairs. âI canât. Not right now.â
My lips part, but I stop myself. Heâs not a witness I need to finesse and pry information from. âI shouldnâtââ
He waves off my attempt at an apology and strides into the living room. When he returns, heâs wearing his boots.
Waves of disappointment and frustration wash over me, but I canât open my mouth.
âI have to go, Charlotte.â He takes my hand and pulls me close. I donât even have a chance to let it sink in that heâs leaving before his lips are on mine. Hard and insistent. Driven by all the words he canât seem to express. Itâs one short, incinerating kiss that leaves me breathless when he drags his mouth from mine. âWe both need time to cool off. But,â he squeezes my hand, forcing me to meet his troubled gaze, âIâm not walking away from you. This isnât over.â
He turns on his heel and walks away without another word. He doesnât slam my front door, but he might as well have the way I jump at the sound.
My heart aches. From hurting him for no reason. For all the hurt I could cause him if we keep seeing each other.
He told you he wasnât walking away. Weâre involved.
I shouldnât have let him leave. Not like that.
Iâm not sure how long I stand there in my kitchen. Darkness falls and Iâm still leaning against the counter, wondering what the fuck happened.
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
As if thereâs some cosmic joke the universe wants to play on me, the first person I run into at court the next morning is attorney Hope Kendall.
The wife of the president of the Lost Kings MC.
I bet she knows something about Tellerâs accident.
Last night, I decided that was the key and I was determined to figure it out. An internet search gave me next to nothing. There have been hundreds of accidents in the Capital Region over the last year.
Itâs just the two of us in the attorney waiting room.
âHow are you, Charlotte?â She flashes a bright smile as she throws her briefcase on the table.
âGood.â Realizing I have the perfect segue to ask about Marcel, I lean forward. âThanks for sending Heidi and her fiancé my way. You donât do adoption work?â
She seems startled for a second but shakes it off quick. âNo. And given my personal relationship to both of them, I didnât think it was appropriate.â
Personal relationship? Thatâs one way of putting it, I guess.
âYou know,â I say, sitting up and flipping open a notebook like Iâm just the nerdiest little attorney ever. âI canât seem to find her motherâs name in my file. Do you happen to know it?â
She narrows her eyes. âIf Iâve heard it, I canât remember.â
âWas itâ¦Mariella?â
Her face pales and she sits back. âNo. Whereâd youâ¦No. Definitely not.â
Hmmâ¦sheâs going to be a tougher nut to crack than I expected.
âHer brother, Marcel, came to the appointment with them to watch Alexa.â I paste on a fake smile. âWasnât that sweet?â
âHe did?â
âHeidi mentioned an accident and I noticed he was using a cane, but thought it would be rude to ask. Do you know what happened?â
She swallows and her gaze darts away. âA car ran into him when he was on his bike.â
âOh, thatâs horrible. Was he alone?â
âI think so.â
For such a good lawyer, sheâs a terrible liar.
My gaze strays to her ring finger. The massive wedding set sheâs wearing nearly blinds me. âDid you get married?â
For the first time since I started badgering her with questions, she relaxes and smiles. âYes.â
âCongratulations.â
âThanks.â
I have so many other questions I want to ask, but sheâs already suspicious. The option is taken away from me when another attorney joins us. Hope puts her head down, pretending to study her file, but from time to time I catch her watching me with an enigmatic expression.
After the shitty way I left things with Charlotte, Iâm in an even more foul mood than usual.
Something Murphy comments on almost as soon as he sees me.
âYou look like shit. Where you been all weekend?â
âI just saw you Saturday, dick.â
âYeah, and then you took off.â
âWhat are you, my keeper, now?â
He rolls his eyes and opens the door wider so I can enter Rockâs house. âThanks for doing this.â
âWhat? Watch my niece? Anytime.â
Alexaâs on the floor in front of the couch, busy playing with a pile of large plastic blocks in different shapes and sizes. Thereâs a bigger box to put the blocks in according to size. She alternates between banging them together and trying to place them in the correct holes.
âDonât you have some dolls for her?â I ask.
The corner of his mouth quirks. âDonât let your sister hear that. Sheâs down on gender stereotyping toys,â he nods at the blocks, âaccording to her, those are supposed teach spatial awareness and physical confidence.â
Yup, that sounds like Heidi, and damn do I love her for always trying so hard to do whatâs best for Alexa. Lord, knows our own parents never bothered.
âWhat the hell is on her head?â I ask, staring at the stretchy-headband-with-giant-bow thing holding Alexaâs minuscule amount of hair back.
Murphy snorts. âHope bought it for her. Itâs a whole outfit.â
âJesus,â I mutter, taking in the rest of the pink, green, blue, and yellow pants and shirt. The pants are all ruffles from the knees down. âShe looks like something out of the Easter Bunnyâs basket.â
âYour sisterâs all about the ruffles lately, so keep that to yourself.â
âSo, no girl toys, but girly outfits?â I ask to be a jerk.
âExactly. Just go with it.â
I bend over to pick Alexa up, lightly tossing her in the air. She squeals and slobbers all over my cheek. âWhatâd your mommy and aunt do to you, Alexa?â
She chortles and makes a bunch of ba, ba, ba noises.
âDoes she want something?â
âI think sheâs trying to say badass.â
I canât help laughing, whic
h makes Alexa giggle some more.
This is exactly what I needed.
Murphy picks up a small stack of square picture books. âAlexa loves these, so if you need her to sit still and chill for a few minutes try âem. She likes turning the pages.â
âOkay.â
âYou good?â Murphy asks.
âIâll be fine.â
âI shouldnât be gone more than a couple hours.â
After he leaves, I flick on the television and sit on the floor with Alexa. The blocks keep her busy for a while, but then she starts yawning and touching her face. âTired?â
She shakes her head no but lets me pick her up and cuddle her. A few seconds later, sheâs snoozing against me. âYou seem awfully comfortable sleeping upright. I bet your dad lets you do this all the time,â I whisper, stroking my hand over her back.
The front door opens and Hope rushes in. âHey, Teller.â She doesnât even seem surprised to find me in her living room.
âMurphy had to run out,â I explain.
âI know. He called me.â
âYouâre home early.â
âRockâs supposed to be here soon.â
âOh, God, were you two planning to have a quickie? Should I take Alexa and run?â
She blushes and laughs. âNo.â
I manage to pull myself and Alexa off the floor without waking her and settle into the couch.
Hope takes the chair next to me and crosses her legs. The skirt suit sheâs wearing reminds me of Charlotte. Who am I kidding. I havenât stopped thinking about Charlotte. âWere you in court this morning?â
âYes.â She taps her finger against her lips for a second as if sheâs considering something. âI ran into Heidiâs attorney, Charlotte.â
âYou did, huh. Thatâs nice,â I answer in what I hope is a disinterested tone.
Suddenly she leans over and pushes up the sleeve of my shirt, staring at the tattoo with Mariellaâs name on my arm. âThis is pretty. Whenâd you get it?â she asks gently.
âAfter I got out of rehab.â
She nods and takes her hand away. âI guess you guys are always getting so much ink, I didnât notice.â
I flash a cocky grin, even though Iâm feeling anything but right now. âRock probably doesnât want you noticing.â
A soft snort of laughter comes out of her. âI think Rock knows he has nothing to worry about.â
âOuch. Thatâs harsh.â
âStop. You know what I mean.â Hopeâs expression turns more serious. âHow are you? Seeing anyone?â
Iâve known Hope for a couple years now and canât ever remember her asking me about my dating habits. I think she prefers not to know what we do and who we do it with. Especially since sheâs befriended most of the bunnies associated with the club.
Iâm also uneasy since the first thing she did was mention Charlotte. âNot all of us need to settle down.â
âTrue,â she agrees.
Rock opens the door, and I swear I breathe a sigh of relief. Having Hopeâs penetrating gaze trained on me almost has me ready to confess my weekend with Charlotte and ask her what the hell to do next.
Hope hurries to meet him by the door and the two of them engage in an intimate greeting that has me averting my gaze.
âHey, Teller,â Rock calls out. He takes Hopeâs hand and they join me in the living room. âHowâs our girl?â
âSleepy.â The headbandâs sitting cockeyed on Alexaâs head now and I slip it off, setting it on the end table. âWhatâs with the getup?â I ask Hope.
She chuckles. âIt was so cute.â
âI can take her over to the clubhouse if you guys want to be alone.â
âYouâre fine. Let her sleep,â Hope says. Rock gives her a look like he had a completely different answer in mind.
Thatâs Alexaâs cue to wake up. She blinks a few times and looks around as if sheâs surprised sheâs not on the floor anymore.
âHey, baby. Have a good nap?â Rock says, holding out his hand.
She grasps his fingers and squeals, kicking her feet. A lump forms in my throat. âThanks for taking such good care of them, Prez.â
I donât know where the hell Heidi and Alexa wouldâve ended up if Rock and Hope hadnât welcomed them into their home after Axel died.
Well, thatâs not true. I wouldâve found them a place, but it wouldnât have been at the clubhouse and I really love having them close by.
Rock takes her from me so I can pull myself off the couch. âIâm going to change her, then take her over to visit Sparky. You know he says sheâs good energy for the plants.â
He snorts and hands her back to me. âKeep her upstairs. She doesnât need the contact high.â
âI will.â
âAny other plans?â Hope asks. I swear sheâs still suspicious.
âPhysical therapy later.â
âDo you need someone to go with you?â Rock asks.
âNah, I got it.â In the beginning, I needed someone to go with me because Iâd be so drained I couldnât drive home. Now, I can handle it.
If I can just figure out how to handle my feelings for Charlotte, life would be perfect.
CHAPTER NINETEEN
Prying information out of Hope didnât go my way. But a couple days later Iâm in my office when Iâm handed another opportunity.
Or rather another opportunity barges into my office uninvited and unexpected. I hurry to the reception area and almost fall out of my heels when I find my uncle snooping around.
âUncle Chuck?â
âChar-char!â He embraces me longer than seems necessary, considering this is the first time heâs ever visited me at my office. âHow you been, girlie?â
âFine. What brings you here?â I have a pretty good guess, but Iâm curious about his answer.
âWell, princess, I heard something kind of disturbing and wanted to talk to you about it.â
I cross my arms over my chest and sit my butt on the edge of the reception desk. âDo tell.â
He ignores my sarcasm. âDid you go home with that kid I introduced you to at my birthday party?â
Tellerâs all man, not a kid in any way, but I donât think thatâs the right answer. âWhat kid?â
âDonât fuck with me, Charlotte. Iâm serious.â
âIâm not a mind-reader, Uncle Chuck.â
âThe Lost King. Teller. You fuck him? That direct enough, girlie?â
My jaw clenches. âI donât think my personal life is your business.â
âYou kiddinâ me?â He attempts a softer, more fatherly approach. âYouâre my only brotherâs daughter. Of course everything you do is my business.â
âThat would be a lot more believable if you actually gave a shit about what happened to me.â
We stare at each other for a long time. Neither of us speaking. Both of us knowing exactly what Iâm talking about.
âThatâs ancient history.â
âFor you maybe.â
âI didnât come here to argue about things I canât fix.â
âThen tell me why youâre here.â
âYou seeing this guy?â
âWho?â
âTeller,â he spits out.
Iâm not ashamed to admit Iâm enjoying his exasperation.
âI think we already covered how I feel about you prying into my personal life.â
He steps closer, trying to intimidate me. My heart thumps, but outside I remain calm and hold my ground, even when he leans closer, running his nose over my hair, breathing in my scent in the creepiest way possible. âYou want to know how I know?â he says in a low voice against my ear.
âKnow what?â I answer in as steady of a tone as Iâm capable of.
âYou smelled like him the other night.â
I donât have time to contemplate how disturbing that is because he has more to say.
âSo either you fucked him in my clubhouse, which would really piss me off. Or you got real cozy with him.??
?
Finally, he stands back, crossing his arms over his chest. âYou think youâre special? You have any idea how many sluts he fucks around with? You think what was going on in my clubhouse the other night doesnât happen in his?â
I meet his challenging gaze. âI donât know why you think I care.â
âDonât think for a second I donât know every move you make, girlie.â
âWhy would you bother?â
âYouâre my niece. Thatâs why. I donât want some arrogant prick treating you like a whore.â
âIâve dated a lot of arrogant pricks. Why are you worried about this one in particular?â
âChrist, youâre a difficult little bitch.â
âYes, I know how much women with opinions and thoughts bother you.â
He throws his arms in the air. âDonât start spouting your femifascist-college bullshit at me. This is serious. What would your dad say if he knew you were fucking the enemy?â
Bringing up my dad is a low blow, but not unexpected. Still, it hurts. âIf heâs the enemy whyâd you let him into your clubhouse?â
âKeep your enemies closer and all that shit.â
A predictable answer.
âWhat have they done thatâs so awful? Isnât Uncle Whisper in business with one of them?â
He sneers. âYeah, âcause Ulfric was soft and couldnât rein in his crew. That shit ends soon.â
I struggle to hide my surprise that heâd share so much information with me and thankfully heâs too worked up to notice.
âYou want to keep seeing him, then do your uncle a favor and find out what theyâre doing in Ironworks.â
âIsnât that Vipers MC territory?â
âNot anymore. Ask your boyfriend why. He had a hand in it. Paid dearly too.â
âIâm not asking him anything because I donât care.â
âYou better fucking care. Heâs dangerous, Charlotte. You donât understand what youâre dealing with.â
I uncross my arms, and push away from the desk, sidestepping him. The desk gives me enough distance to face my uncle. âIâm a grown woman, Uncle Chuck. Iâm not going to be told who I can and canât spend time with. And Iâm not going to be dragged into your club nonsense. Now, if you donât mind, I have to be in court in a few minutes.â
