Page 8 of More Than Miles (Lost Kings MC 6)
My shoulder still burns from the Tiger Balm, and I replay the few brief seconds with my shirt off while Blake tended to me, our kiss, our second kiss after he tenderly wiped my face clean. Iâm not sharing any of those moments with my brother, though.
âHeidi, you know youâre the most important person in the world to me, right? Everything Iâve done. Everything I do. Itâs to make sure you end up okay. You know that, right?â
His words drive splinters of guilt through my chest. âYes.â
He sighs and reaches over to squeeze my hand. âHow much do you remember about living with mom?â
âI donât know. Not much. I remember hanging out at the club with you guys more.â
âShe left us alone a lot.â
âI know.â Iâm tempted to tell him to get to the point, but Iâm also curious about where heâs going with this.
âYou remember any of the guys she used to bring home?â
If I think really hard, I do. Sort of. âI remember you sleeping in my room when she had guys over. You used to sleep in front of the door.â
Iâm watching him closely, so I notice the way his mouth twists down right away. âYeah.â His hands squeeze the steering wheel. âYou were so little. And trusting. And sweet.â
âAre you trying to say Iâm a big, suspicious, bitter teenager now?â
He huffs out a laugh and glances over at me. âAnd so fucking smart.â
âSmart ass you mean.â
âSometimes.â
âNot that I donât enjoy strolling down crappy childhood memory lane, but do you have a point?â
âWhat did we always say when we were younger? Whatever Mom didââ
âWeâd do the opposite when we were adults.â
âYou still happy with Axel?â
Confused and suspicious of the change in conversation, I take a second to answer. âYes, why?â A shiver of excitement races over me. âWhy? You think the clubâs going to vote him in soon?â
âHeidi, you know I canât talk to you about that stuff.â
âYeah, yeah,â I grumble and cross my arms over my chest.
He chuckles then turns serious again. âIf youâre with Axel, be with him. But stop messing with Blake.â
The familiar tingle of my blood boiling starts up. âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âExactly what I said. Heâs too old for you.â
âIâm not messing with him.â If anything, Blake keeps messing with my head. My heart. But I wonât rat him out to my brother and cause problems between them. I love both of them too much.
Heâs silent for the next few miles and his words replay in my head. âAre you trying to say Iâm like Mom?â
âNo. Fuck no. Youâre nothing like her. I just donât want you making her mistakes.â
âWhat would those be?â
âHeidiââ
âAxelâs my only boyfriend.â
âGood. I know you and Blake are friends, too. Just, be careful.â
âWhy? He wouldnât hurt me.â
âYouâre not a two-guy type of girl, Heidi.â
âHow do you know?â
He takes his eyes off the road for a second to glare at me. âI know you.â
âYouâre saying that because Iâm your sister.â
âHow would you feel if you knew Axel had girls on the side?â
An uneasy prickle slides through my stomach at the thought. Axel spends a lot of hours at the club. Marcel knows my boyfriend in a whole different way than I do. âYou havenât seen himâ¦he doesnât mess around with other girls, does he?â
He chuckles because I fell for the bait. âHave I ever kicked his ass?â
I snort and shake my head.
âI wonât tolerate anyone disrespecting my sister. Club or not.â
A tight smile forms at the corners of my mouth, but I donât say anything right away.
âMarcel?â
âYeah?â
âHave you ever considered those girls you mess with? Club girls. Maybe theyâre someoneâs little sister?â
âNo.â
âMaybe theyâve got big brothers warning them away from guys like you?â
His jaw tightens. âYouâre too smart for your own good.â
My phone buzzes, interrupting our fun conversation. I pull it out and find a text from Axel.
Where you at?
With my brother.
âWho is it?â
âAxel.â
âTell him youâre having family night.â
I chuckle as I tap out the message.
âYou need to drive me to school tomorrow. I left my car there.â
âOkay.â
I sit back and watch the highway rush by. Not for the first time, it occurs to me what a long drive this is for my brother. A huge inconvenience when I know heâd rather be hanging out at the clubhouse. Yet, he did itârented an apartment near my grandmotherâs houseâso he could share custody with her. So he could see me and not interrupt my last year of high school.
âMarcel, you can get rid of this apartment now. Grams is gone. Iâm done with high school. Thereâs no reason to still live out here.â
âWe can rent a place closer to Hudson Valley if you want.â
Actually, Axel and I have been talking about getting our own apartment. But Iâm not ready to tell my brother this yet.
âI can get my own place.â
He glances over at me. âHow you planninâ to afford that?â
âI donât know. Iâll get a job.â
âYou worry about finishing school. Doing your internship. Iâll worry about the rent.â
âYouâre going to have to let me be an adult sometime.â
âI will. When Iâm ready.â
I huff out a laugh.
My big brother will never be ready for me to grow up.
As promised, Marcel drops me off at school the next morning.
Axelâs leaning up against my car with a bunch of flowers in one hand.
âCanât he go one night without seeing you?â Marcel snorts.
It takes a second to force any words past the lump of guilt in my throat. âStop. Donât tease him.â
âIâm not.â My handâs on the door about to open it when Marcel stops me. âJust slow down a little. Youâre so young to be tied down.â
âArenât you the one who told me to pick a lane last night? Now, youâre what? Telling me to take the back country roads?â
He laughs and stares out the windshield. âSomething like that.â
âYou know I wonât be a virgin forever, right?â
He claps his hands over his ears. âIâm gonna pretend I didnât hear that.â
Leaning over, I place a quick kiss on his cheek. âDenialâs an ugly place to live, big brother.â
âGet out of here.â He shoos me out the door. âCall me later.â
Axel holds out the flowers as I approach. âWhatâs this?â
He shrugs as I take the bouquet. âYou sounded kind of down last night.â
âThanks,â I murmur as I stick my nose in the middle of the blossoms. They donât have a lot of scent, but itâs the best way to avoid looking Axel in the eye. I barely slept last night. My mind kept returning to Blake. The things he confessed to me at the park. The things he said in his bedroom. Our kiss. The sweet way he took care of me. My brother interrupting everything and then lecturing me on the way home. All of those things replayed on a constant loop. The thing I should have been the most worked up overâalmost falling over the cliff, barely made an appearance in my recap of the day.
âDonât be mad, but I have to work again tonight.â
âOh. Thatâs okay. I have some work I need to catch up on.â I certainly didnât get anything done last night.
âWe can meet up later. Maybe grab dinner?â
âSounds good.â Does it though? When I canât get my mind off of Blake?
Axel threads his fingers through my hair, holdin
g me still while he leans down and presses a kiss against my lips. Itâs quick and sweet.
Then itâs over.
He pulls away a slight frown darkening his face. âSee you later?â
âSure.â
Leaving the clubhouse without saying goodbye to Blake last night still bothers me. After classes, I point my car toward Furious Fitness.
Iâll just drive-by. If I happen to see his bike, maybe Iâll stop in and say hello. Or so I tell myself.
The subtle shimmer of blackened green paint catches my attention. Iâd spot Murphyâs bike anywhere. It has a four-leaf clover with the clubâs skull and crown logo painted in a subtle way thatâs visible in certain light. Heâs had some version of that image on his bike for as long as I can remember. My mind strays to the up-close view of his chest where he has the symbol inked into his skin.
Bad Heidi.
As I reach out and wrap my hand around the door, I have second thoughts. Wrath will razz me to death if he catches me here visiting Murphy.
Itâs not enough to stop me, though.
Then I enter the gym and want to walk right back out.
Murphyâs watching over a slim blonde girl on a treadmill, arms crossed over his chest. He says a few words to her and makes an adjustment on the machine. The flirty smile she gives him makes my stomach twist, but then he glances up. When his gaze lands on me, a big smile spreads over his face. He says a few words to the girl and walks toward me without his eyes ever leaving mine.
âHey, what are you doinâ here?â Thereâs no hug or touch of any kind, which feels weird, even though itâs probably for the best.
âI was driving by and saw your bike in the parking lot, so I thought Iâd stop in and say hello. Is that okay?â
âYeah. Absolutely.â He jerks his thumb over his shoulder at the blonde whoâs now glaring at me. âLet me finish up.â
âYeah, sure. Sorry I interrupted. I can go.â
âDonât you dare. Iâll be right back.â
I watch as he talks to the girl. Dejected, she takes off for the locker room. Iâm not sure what to think about all the jealousy that seized my heart. I have no right. But I still canât help it. I just donât have to act on it. Right?
âSo, whatâs up?â he asks as he approaches, swinging his arms to burn off the restless energy heâs had for as long as Iâve known him.
âIâ¦I felt bad about not saying goodbye yesterday. My brother saidââ
âYeah. Iâm sorry, too.â
I think he means about the way the night ended, but then he continues. âI shouldnât haveâ¦well, I get that youâre with Axel.â He almost sounds like heâs choking on every word and I can guess why he felt the need to say all thatâmy meddling brother.
âWhat did Marcel threaten to do to you?â
Surprised, he stares at me with wide eyes. Iâm too pissed to get lost in their emerald depths, though.
âNothing.â
âWell, he lectured me all the way home.â
The corner of his mouth lifts into a smirk, but he still wonât confirm my suspicion. An unusual awkwardness settles over us. He finally breaks it by throwing a few fake punches. âSo, did you want me to show you some moves?â
That seems appropriate. âDo you remember when you told me what to do if a guy everââ
âHow could I forget? You punched me in the balls to make sure the advice was sound.â
I cringe at the memory. Completely mortified at how obnoxious I was as a kid. âSorry,â I mutter without looking at him.
He laughs. âI think you cried more than I did.â
âI felt bad I hurt you,â I whisper.
Instead of responding, Blakeâs gaze strays to something behind me. âHey, Twitch.â
I turn and find a lanky kid hovering by the door. Thereâs plenty of room to move past me, but I inch farther out of his way because he keeps staring at me. The movement pushes me into Murphy who wraps his arm around my shoulders.
âThis your girlfriend?â Twitch asks.
It takes Blake a second to answer. âNo. My friend Heidi. Tellerâs sister.â Iâm usually referred to as Tellerâs little sister. It may seem like nothing, but it means a lot to me that Blake introduces me as his friend first.
Twitch runs his gaze over me and Blakeâs hold drops to my waist, his hand resting on my hip.
âYeah. I see the resemblance. Youâre way prettier than Teller, though.â
âThanks.â With my brotherâs fair coloring and my dark hair, all my life people have questioned whether weâre really related. So hearing that we look alike is honestly more flattering than the pretty comment.
âMove along. Wrathâs waitinâ for you,â Murphy growls at the kid. Twitch hurries away and I step out of Murphyâs hold.
âReally?â I canât stop the laughter popping out of my mouth.
He shrugs. âI donât know him that well yet.â He turns and grabs my hand. âCome on, letâs go out back.â He ducks behind the counter and grabs two bottles of water out of the mini-fridge and takes my hand again.
âSorry, I didnât come dressed to work out.â
He glances at me over his shoulder as he pulls me through the gym. âThatâs okay. Itâs break time for me anyway.â
âMurphy, where you going?â
I recognize Wrathâs voice right away then spot him taking up the entire doorway to his office. He grins when he sees me. âWhatâre you doing here, Heidi-girl?â
Iâve known Wrath my whole life, and he still scares me a little. I also respect him and his opinion means a lot to me. I donât want him thinking I stopped by his place of business to flirt with Murphy, although in the back of my head, I have to admit, thatâs exactly what I did.
âHi, Uncle Wrath.â Blake drops my hand and I walk over for a quick hug from Wrath. âMurphy said you crack the whip on him pretty hard, so I had to drop in and see if it was true.â
He throws his head back and laughs, and Iâm pleased with myself for coming up with something my gravely serious uncle finds amusing.
âNah, Murphyâs a hard worker. No whip-crackinâ required.â
Wrath has never handed out compliments to anyone freely, so I know it must be true. âThat doesnât surprise me.â
âTwitch come find you?â Murphy asks, changing the subject. I glance over, surprised heâd be embarrassed by the compliment.
âYeah, heâs cleaning out the break room.â
âOkay. Weâll be out back if you need me.â
âTake your time. Kids wonât be here for another half hour.â He nods at me and then walks out onto the main floor to talk to customers.
âYou guys seem to be popular with the ladies,â I say, nodding at the crowd of females flocking to Wrathâs side for âfitness advice.â
Blakeâs mouth quirks up. âYeah. Thereâs one of those McMansion developments not far from here. I think he runs an ad in Bored Housewife Weekly or something.â
âHow does Trinity feel about that?â
His shoulders lift. âI think she finds it funny.â He tips his head at the open office door. âShe comes down and works in his office a few days a week. She knows what goes on. Besides, itâs money. Helps pay for the after-school programs he likes to run.â
âOh.â I mull that over while I follow him out the back door.
When I told Heidi I was working at Wrathâs gym, I just wanted her to know I was doing something else with my time other than babysitting strippers. Especially after I realized how deeply my involvement with the club girls and dancers bothered her. I never expected her to show up for a visit.
Iâm crazy-happy to see her though. Can barely keep the grin off my face. Twitch eyeing her like a safe he wanted to crack pissed me the fuck off. Need to keep an eye on that kid. I donât trust him as much as Wrath does.
One of Trinityâs additions to the gym was a couple of picnic benches out back, so on days like today, we could spend time outside. Weâre the only ones out here and it
âs nice to be alone togetherâsomeplace safe where I donât have to worry about her falling over ledges and stuff.
âHow are your arms today?â she asks.
I roll up my long sleeves. âGot taken care of by a professional. Bandages are still good.â
The corners of her mouth quiver. She reaches out and runs her fingers over the gauze. âYou should probably change these tonight.â
âWanna come supervise?â
âIf you need me to.â
She flicks her gaze up and catches me staring at her. Somethingâs been bothering me since she stopped in. âYou okay? You look tired. Hittinâ the books hard?â
Her lips curve into a slight smirk. âThanks a lot. Nothing better than hearing I look like shit.â
âYouâre fucking gorgeous. I just worry about you.â
Her face softens. âYes. Iâve been studying late.â
âIâm glad you stopped by.â
âReally? I wasnât sureââ
âYes, really.â
âYour bike stands out. It caught my eye.â
âYeah?â
âYup. Are you upset itâs almost time to garage it for the winter?â
âHell, yeah. But itâs been pretty warm. You never know. Might be able to ride right up until Christmas.â
âAlways hopeful. Thatâs good, Blake.â She stares at where our fingers are sort of rubbing up against each other.
âI was thinking of going on a run. Havenât taken my bike for a long ride in way too long.â
She peeks up at me. âBy yourself?â
âYeah. Unless you want to come with me. You used to beg me to take you all the time when you were little.â
Her cheeks turn pink. âYeah. Sorry.â
âNo. It was cute.â
âYou promised me a cross-country trip when I was old enough, remember?â
âI did, didnât I?â
âYes.â She looks away, sadness turning her mouth down.
âHey, whatâs wrong?â
âNothing. I just used toânever mind.â
âYou still want to be my co-pilot?â
Her surprised eyes meet mine. âMe?â
âYeah you. Never had anyone go with me before. On the back of my bike, I mean.â I wait to see if what Iâm trying to explain to her sinks in.
