Page 41 of More Than Miles (Lost Kings MC 6)
She picks her head up, staring at me in the dark. âWhen? How?â
âDiving in front of that bullet. Donât ever do that again.â
Her hand settles on my chest as she pushes herself up. âIt was instinct, Blake. I didnât think about it.â
I donât know what to say.
âBesides, I really hope weâre not going to be shot at again,â she says, settling back down in my arms.
âMe, too.â
We get nowhere on the shooting.
A few afternoons later, Jake and I are down at Furious helping Wrath replace the front windows with bulletproof glass and tinting.
It never got reported, so thereâs no impact on business, but weâre still a little jumpy.
âThat should do it,â Jake says. Wrath informed Jake and Whisper of the shooting, otherwise no one outside of the club knows.
Jake tilts his head at me and quirks an eyebrow, silently asking Wrath what I have no idea.
âWhatâs up?â I ask after Jake leaves.
âYouâve been busting your ass here for over a year now.â
âYeah?â
âThis is probably a shitty time to ask since the place just got shot up and all, but I swear I was planning to ask before.â
âWhat? Are you proposing? Because Iâm really planning to marry Heidi.â
The corners of his mouth lift. âVery funny, little brother. No. I still want to go through with the expansion and want you to buy in as a partner.â
I donât have any words at first. âReally?â
âFuck yeah.â
We spend some time going over business stuffâhonestly, Iâm still too shocked to process the whole thingâbefore heading to the clubhouse for church.
We drove down together in his truck since he had a cargo bed full of material for the gym repairs. âYou ever planning to patch Heidi?â he asks me.
âChrist, we just figured shit out. I was giving her brother some time to adjust.â
His loud, rumbling laughter fills the cab. âFuck him. Heâs had enough time to adjust.â He glances over. âBesides, he might surprise you.â
âI was thinking of throwing it out there today.â
He nods. âAbout time.â
Feeling encouraged from Wrathâs words, I canât wipe the grin off my face as we sit at the table. Rock knows Iâm up to something and keeps an eye on me. As soon as regular business finishes, I raise my hand.
âIâm claiming Heidi.â I turn and look at my best friend. âAnyone who has an issue with that should say so now.â
He stares at me, a slow smirk forming at the corner of his mouth. Like an absolute asshole, he grumbles, âAbout fucking time.â
âDick.â I reach over and slap him and he grins at me.
âSince it looks like big brother isnât going to have a meltdown, should we take a vote?â Rock asks.
Usually a vote on an olâ lady is just the officers. Rock doesnât ask the rest of the guys to leave this time.
âShe knows better than anyone to keep her mouth shut,â Z says. âSheâs a little badass. Knows how to shoot. Never asks questions. Young, but good olâ lady material.â
Thatâs a lot of stuff in Heidiâs favor, and I canât help feelinâ proud that Z feels that way about my girl.
Wrath grins. âShe was ready to take a bullet for you, Murphy. I donât think youâll do any better than that.â
Teller adds, âShe loves the club as much as any of us.â Which I guess is his way of saying yes.
Rock stares at me thoughtfully for a few minutes before giving his okay. âShe understands the life. Sheâll be an asset to the club as an olâ lady.â
His endorsement leaves a lump in my throat. âFeelinâ old, prez?â I ask to shake it off.
âYes.â He shakes his head, but heâs smiling. âLove both of you. You certainly took the longest route possible to get here.â
âThanks a lot.â I canât stop grinning though, so he knows Iâm not too pissed.
Z stands and leans over the back of his chair. âWhen do you want to do it?â he asks with a sly smile.
âDonât know. Havenât talked to her about it recently. Soon.â
âPlease tell me you didnât knock my sister up?â Teller asks.
âNo, you dick.â Then, because I feel like being an asshole after that question, I add, âNot that I havenât been trying.â
Yeah, it was a dick thing to say, but he had it coming. Everyone laughs.
Except Teller.
He punches me in the arm. âFuck you,â he grumbles.
Z walks over to our side of the table and drapes a leather vest in front of me.
All the officersâ patches are already sewn on the side. My four-leaf cloverâs right up front on the left.
My jaw drops. âHoly shit.â I glance up, looking over each of my brothers. âWhen did you do this?â
Zâs gaze slides away. âWhen she moved back. Figured one way or another, youâd finally claim her ass. Didnât want you to have to wait.â
Wrath points to Rock and then himself. âWe had to wait forever for ours. Be thankful we broke him in for you.â
âThat sounded really gay,â Z snarks back.
âYou wish.â
I canât wait another second.
âAll right, fucksticks. Iâm out.â
Z holds his hand out, but I pull him in for a hug. âThanks for doing this, brother. I really appreciate it.â
âBonfire later,â Wrath says, slapping my open palm. âTrin bought this little tent thing, so you can bring the baby.â
âThanks.â
Everyone else congratulates me on the way out. I stuff her vest back into the plain brown package and head to Rockâs house.
Heidiâs playing on the floor with Alexa but jumps up when she sees me. âHow was church?â
âGood. Feel like going for a walk with me?â
âSure.â
We havenât built a driveway out here yet, but Z and I have been working on smoothing out some of the paths, so itâs easier to use Alexaâs stroller. Turns out strollers are like fucking cars, and I ended up finding a Sport Utility Stroller with three sixteen-inch wheels, a hand brake, and a footbrake. Itâs badass, and Alexa loves being in it. Which is good, because today sheâs in for a long ride.
Heidi glances at the package in my hands but doesnât say anything. Part of me thinks she already suspects whatâs about to happen.
Doesnât dim my enthusiasm one bit.
We take the loop that passes Wrath and Trinityâs houseâwhich is finally finished and keep going. Heidi gives Alexa a running commentary of everything we pass, and I never get tired of listening to her.
We finally stop at the place weâre planning to build our house. Heidiâs giddy and rattles off a long list of stuff she wants the house to include.
I canât wait to give her anything and everything she wants.
When she winds down, I motion her over. âYou know youâre already my olâ lady, right?â
âI guess,â she teases.
âBrat.â
She grins even bigger.
âYou know whatâs in here, donât you?â
She points to the address on the front of the package. âPattyâs Patches.â
âFuckinâ Z,â I grumble.
Until Hope, there hadnât been any olâ ladies in the club since I was a kid. Even so, I remember how much I wanted one of those vests when I grew up.
No, not one of those. Murphyâs.
To finally, officially, belong to him.
I canât stop the fluttering in my belly or the blood racing through my veins. Iâm well aware of what people outside the club would think about a patch declaring me âproperty ofâ and donât care one bit.
I know without a doubt I own Blakeâs heart as much as he owns mine.
He shakes the vest out, setting the empty package in one of the stroller compartments. Alexa squees and claps her little hands, as if she knows
what a big occasion this is.
Iâd spied the officersâ patches on Hopeâs vest and Trinityâs vest but wasnât sure theyâd end up on mine.
âMy brother really voted me in?â I ask running my fingers over the familiar dollar sign patch.
âHell yeah, he did.â He helps me put it on and zips it up, adjusting the buckles on the side. âThe assholes must have done it a while ago, too, because Z had it ready and waiting for me.â
âReally?â
âYup. Z called you a little badass.â
Knowing the men Iâve looked up to since I was little, and consider my uncles, think Iâm worthy of being part of the club in this way steals my breath.
When heâs finished, I throw myself against him, and he holds me for a long time. Neither of us saying a word.
Blake moves first, kissing my cheek. âLove you so much, beautiful.â
âMe, too.â
Before I get weepy or something, he turns me to face the woods. âSo, is this the spot? Youâre sure?â
âYes. I love it.â
âGood.â
We take the long way back to Rock and Hopeâs house. âBonfire tonight to celebrate,â he says as we get closer.
âAlexaââ Iâm worried about mosquitos and bonfire smoke in her eyes, which he apparently realizes.
âWrath said Trinity has it covered.â
âOh my gosh!â Hope yells from the porch, rushing down the stairs to meet us. âRock told me you voted today.â She grins at Murphy and pulls me in for a hug.
And just like that, Iâm officially an olâ lady of the Lost Kings MC.
Nothing beats being surrounded by family and having your girl in your arms. My girl wearing my patch.
She turns, feeding me a sticky, messy sâmore. I end up licking most of it off her fingers, which makes her squeal and laugh. âThat tickles.â
She turns and pushes me until Iâm flat on my back in the cool, wet grass. My hand cups the back of her head, holding her still for a long, lingering kiss.
âFor fuckâs sake!â
Something hard thumps my leg, and I break away from Heidiâs sweet mouth. âOw.â
Marcelâs towering over us, waving his cane in my face. âHave some respect, would ya? Just because I voted her in doesnât mean I want to watch you violate my sister all night long,â he grouches, dropping into the grass next to us.
âThen donât look,â Heidi sasses back.
He pokes her in the side and she slaps his hand away. I sit up, pulling her with me. âWhatâs up?â
âRock wants to see you.â
I look out over the field bathed in the orange glow from the fire and clouds of smoke. âWhere is he?â
Teller points to the left of the fire, where I just make out the silhouettes of what can only be Wrath, Z, and Rock.
âYou know what itâs about?â
âSounds like youâre headed to Swayâs tomorrow.â
âFuck that.â No way am I leaving Heidi alone for a single night. Not this soon.
She seems to sense my resistance. âGo on. See what Rock needs.â
âYou sure youâre okay, babe?â I ask, kissing her cheek and she nods.
âSheâs fine,â Teller snaps.
âYouâre begging for an ass kicking, you know that?â I warn.
He lets me pull him up off the ground with minimal complaining.
âYou know, if sheâs gonna be an olâ lady, she has to get used to you being away sometimes,â he advises on our way over.
âMaybe itâs me who doesnât want to be away from her. Ever consider that?â
His hand clamps down over my arm, stopping me. I face him, bracing myself for the youâre such a pussy insults heâs probably planning. His jaw works for a secondâand holy shit, is my best friend actually speechless? Finally, he loosens his grip and continues walking as if nothing happened.
As I watch Blake and my brother walk away, Alexa lets out a flurry of fussy noises. Sitting up, I poke my head in the little tent Trinity set up for us and do a quick diaper change.
âHow is she?â
âOh, shit!â Startled and feeling foolish, I back out of the tent to find Trinity smiling down at me.
âSorry, didnât mean to scare you.â
Brushing grass off my pants, I stand. âThank you so much for doing that.â I gesture lamely at the tent.
âNo problem. I didnât want you to feelâ¦left out when we do stuff like this.â
Before I can thank her, she nods at my vest. âCongratulations.â
My cheeks warm and I glance away. âI think Iâm still in shock.â
Her lips slide into a sympathetic smile. âLong time coming.â
âTrue.â A bunch of things Iâve wanted to say for a while come to mind. âTrinity, Iâm sorry I was so meanââ
âDonât. Weâre fine. I understand.â She lowers her gaze to the grass for a few seconds before continuing. âI would haveâ¦I would have felt the same way.â She stares in the direction of the guys, who appear to be having a heated conversation. âHe loves you.â
âI know.â
âWeâre only friends.â
Embarrassment for starting this whole uncomfortable conversation warms my cheeks but I smile anyway. âPlease. I only have to be around you and Uncle Wrath for five seconds to know thereâs no one else for you.â
She snorts and bumps me with her shoulder. We both sit down on the blanket Blake brought with us.
Iâm not sure why, but I still feel like thereâs more to say. âMurphy told meâ¦he told me you were there for him when his mom died.â
She blinks a few times before answering. âThat was a rough time.â
âI know I met her once or twice, when I was little, but I barely remember her.â
âHey, Trin,â my brother says, interrupting the supremely awkward talk Trinity and are weaving through.
âWhereâs Blake?â I ask.
âChrist, you can be apart for five seconds, right?â
âNo. Not really.â I stick my tongue out at him, because well, heâs my big brother.
Next to me, Trinity shakes with laughter. âYoung love.â
A flash of pain freezes my brotherâs face for a second. Whether itâs physical pain from the accident or something else, Iâm not sure. âHey.â I lean forward and tap his hand. âI never got to tell you about running into Mom.â
His blond eyebrows shoot up and his jaw drops. Heâd look less surprised if Iâd smacked him upside the head with a branch. âWhat? When?â
For the next few minutes, I recount my two recent encounters with our long lost mother.
âWhat a bitch,â he mutters.
âPretty much,â I agree.
Trinity nods at Blake and Wrath, who are making their way over to us. âJeez, the four of us could form a âshitty mothers club.ââ
Itâs an awful thing to laugh about, but that doesnât stop us.
My brother grabs my hand, giving it a quick squeeze to get my attention. âI want you to stay away from her.â
âNo problem there.â
âIâm serious, Heidi. Sheâs bad news. If she calls you again, let me know.â
Marcelâs gradually eased up on the overprotective big brother antics over the last few months, so I take his warning seriously. âOkay. I will.â
âWhatâs going on?â Wrath asks as he sits next to Trinity and pulls her into his lap.
âYou tell us.â I glance up at Blake. âAre you taking off?â
He runs his hand over his beard before settling down next to me. âNot tonight. Tomorrow.â
I wait for more information, but instead he asks about Alexa.
âSheâs fine.â
Rock and Hope wander over. Hope waits patiently while Rock smooths out a blanket next to ours.
After theyâre sitting, Rock lifts his chin in Blakeâs direction. âOlâ ladies were invited down, too. If that makes it easier.â
âFuck that,â my brother sn
aps.
Blake ignores Marcelâs outburst. âI know Tawny said it would be family friendly, but I donât want Alexa down there.â
Part of me is a little annoyed Blakeâs making this decision without asking me. In some ways, Iâd very much like to go to the downstate club and have Blake introduce me to everyone as his olâ lady. But the responsible mother part of me knows heâs right.
âUm.â Hope waves her hand in the air. âIâd rather stay here and help Heidi with the baby.â
My heart skips. I was worried Iâd be the only one staying behind.
Trinity turns to Wrath. âAre you running down, too?â
Wrath shoots a glare at Rock. âApparently.â
âI volunteer for baby duty, too,â Trinity says, making Wrath chuckle.
I lean over and whisper, âThank you.â
She flashes a quick smile and mouths, âNo problem.â
My brother falls back in the grass. âIâm out. Still canât ride.â
âYou can always sit in the van, ya fuck,â Blake says, leaning over and smacking my brotherâs arm. He turns to Rock. âSway gonna be pissed if no olâ ladies come down?â
Rock lifts his shoulders. âFuck him if he is.â
Later, when everyone has drifted off toâ¦do their own thing, Blake turns to me with uncertainty brewing in his eyes. âAre you mad about not going?â
âNo.â Iâve been working hard on being truthful with Blake no matter what. The way he asked me to. âIâd really like to have youââI feel childish admitting thisââyou know, tell everyone Iâm yours. That youâre with me. But youâre right, itâs not a good idea to bring Alexa down there, and I canât ask Hope to watch my daughter all the time. So, no. Iâm not mad.â
His mouth slides into a hint of a smile, but his eyes still seem troubled. His words are strong, though. âBelieve me, Heidi, Iâm yours. Iâm not going down there to⦠I meant it when I said there was no one else for me.â
âIâm not worried about that. I trust you.â
He covers my hand with his. As always, his touch is gentle as he picks my hand up, dipping his head to kiss my open palm. âThank you.â
