Page 4 of More Than Miles (Lost Kings MC 6)
Last night did not go the way Iâd planned. Not even a little bit. Nope. Heidi stayed glued to Axelâs side all night, then I caught her sneaking him upstairs. I had no right to stop them. Her brother wasnât around for me to tattle on her. For a second, I thought Wrath would intervene. But he was no help either.
Confused by my inattention, Serena left the party early. Honestly, it was a relief. If I canât have the girl I want, then Iâd rather be by myself at this point. Maybe itâs too little too late as far as Heidiâs concerned. I donât know.
I do know if I gave up every time life threw a challenge at me, Iâd be dead in a ditch by now. So first thing the next morning, I ride over to Tellerâs apartment. Wrath casually mentioned how Axel left early last night and Marcel had taken Heidi home a while later. Words that gave me some hope. Maybe she ended things with him?
I know Tellerâs got club business to take care of, so he wonât be home. Iâm praying like fuck Axelâs not using the opportunity to reconcile with Heidi or sneak in some alone time.
No other bikes in the parking lotâs a good sign.
Heidi taking for-fucking-ever to open the door is not.
âHey. What are you doing here so early?â she asks in a low morning-rough voice that has me thinking about what it would be like to wake up next to her every day.
I aim for cheerful, instead of the pervy bastard who threatens to make an appearance. âItâs almost noon.â
âIn case you forgot, my birthday party was last night. I got in late.â
At least I know the âgot in lateâ applies to her brother giving her a ride home and not her boyfriend. I ignore her sarcasm. âWe still need to talk.â
She yawns and opens the door wider. âYou could have at least brought me breakfast.â
Jesus Christ. A braless Heidi in tiny flannel shorts, tank top, and not much else is not what I need in front of me right now.
âIâll take you out for breakfast later. First, we need to talk.â
âAbout whaaat?â she whines as she walks back into her bedroom.
Iâm trying not to drool over her long bare legs walking away from me or notice the swish of her ass in the tight flannel.
I expected her to shut her bedroom door, change, and come back out. But the door stays open. Cautiously, I stick my head inside and find her under the covers.
âHeidi?â
âWhat?â
âCan we talk?â
One of her hands flails out from underneath her comforter. âSpeak.â
Is she deliberately trying to tick me off?
After yesterday, I think itâs best I stay away from her bed. But Iâm irritated that she wonât look at me.
âIt would be easier if youâd look at me.â
âBlake, Iâm tired. Spit it out or let me go back to sleep.â
âNever mind.â I donât fuckinâ need this shit. She made it clear last night, and she sure as fuck is making it clear right now, she doesnât give a fuck.
The slam of the front door behind me isnât as satisfying as I expected.
Iâm halfway to my bike when I hear the light thud, thud, thud of Heidi running down the stairs behind me. âBlake, wait!â
Everything in me stops moving. I turn around in time to catch her as she throws herself at me. âIâm sorry. Please donât be mad. I canât stand when youâre mad at me.â
Ah, shit.
I wrap my arms tight around her and squeeze. âI canât ever stay mad at you.â
After a second, I realize sheâs still wearing the tank top, sorry excuse for a pair of shorts, and no shoes. âYou shouldnât be out here like this.â
By this I mean the barely-there clothes, but also the bare feet. âYouâre gonna get a splinter or something in your foot.â
âI think I already did.â Her mouth turns down. She picks her foot up and wraps her hand around it, inspecting for damage. The movement means sheâs hopping around on one foot. Braless.
Jesus. Eighteen or not, sheâs fucking clueless.
âCome on.â I crouch down and she wraps herself around me for a piggyback ride, the same way sheâs done since she was little.
The pleasure of her body plastered against my back barely registers before the rumble of another bike enters the parking lot.
Fucking Axel.
âShit,â Heidi mumbles and tries to scramble off me. But Iâve got an iron grip on her legs.
âBlake, let me down.â
âNo.â
âBlake, come on. Heâs gonna get pissed.â
Something about her tone stops me. I donât know how to express the rage welling up in me, though. I find out Axelâs ever laid a hand on her, Iâll fucking murder himâslowly and painfully. I allow her to slide down, but wrap my hand around her arm. âWhat do you mean?â
âWhat do you think? We had a fight last night.â
âAbout what?â
âWhat we always fight about. You.â
Iâm too distressed that she spends a second being unhappy to take any pleasure in finding out they fight about me. âDid he hurt you?â
âNo! Knock it off.â She shakes out of my grasp about the same time Axel pulls into a spot next to my bike.
I have to give Axel credit. Heâs a brave little bastard, because he strolls right up to us and nods at me as if nothingâs wrong. âMorning.â
I fold my arms over my chest and acknowledge the greeting with a nod.
âYou okay?â he asks Heidi.
âSheâs fine. We were in the middle of something.â
Heidi smacks my arm, but it might as well be a tap from a butterfly.
Axelâs done being polite. He ignores me and focuses on Heidi. âAre we going to Pennyâs or not?â
âYeah, later. Just let meâ¦ââ her head swivels between the two of usââtake care of this. Iâll call you.â
Axel narrows his eyes at Heidi. âFine,â he says. Iâm really not liking the disrespect in his tone. No one, donât give a fuck who, should talk to Heidi like that. But since Iâm hoping soon it wonât be an issue, I let it go.
He takes off without another word. Youâd think a real man would stay and fight for his girl. âSee, even he knows itâs pointless to fight this.â
âGod, youâre a caveman. Whatâd you want to do, fight to the death for me?â
Yeah, kinda. If thatâs what it takes.
By the look on her face, she knows what Iâm thinking and it isnât appreciated.
She groans and turns to head back upstairs. I have to run to catch up with her. âStill want your piggy back ride?â
âNo.â
We donât say anything else until weâre inside. I make the mistake of trying to kiss her and she wriggles away from me.
Confused, I reach for her again. âWhatâs going on?â
âI explained last night. I canât do this.â
âHeidiââ
âNo. I made a mistake. Iâm not that girl. I donât want to be. I donât cheat on my boyfriend.â
âThen break up with him.â There. Seems pretty simple to me.
She stares at me for a secondâprobably to see if Iâm joking, which Iâm not.
Her face screws into what at first seems like anger. âDoes Serena know youâre here?â By the soft tone she uses, I know sheâs hurt.
âShe has nothing to do with us.â
âSo you invite her to family weddings and birthday parties, but sheâs not your girlfriend?â
âNo,â I answer evenly.
âWhy the hell did you invite her to my birthday party? After you said⦠After weâ¦?â She chokes on the last word and points at her open bedroom door. Iâm furious at Axel for pulling that prank, but I donât offer him up as an excuse. Even though Iâm one hundred percent positive heâs the reason Serena ended up there last night, throwing the blame on him seems like a pussy thing to do.
I give her a simpler truth. âI didnât know she would be there. Sheâs just a friend.â
&n
bsp; âRight. Your downstate girl.â
Fuck. âWho told you that?â
This angry, frustrated groan works out of her throat. It reminds me of the noises she made yesterday when we were alone in her bedroom and I thought we could finally be together.
âYou make me crazy and turn me into something I donât want to be,â she snaps.
âWhatâs that even mean?â
Frustrated, she waves her hands in the air. âYouâre not good for me.â
âHeidiââ
âDonât âHeidiâ me. Did you tell your girlfriend about us?â
âFuck no. Sheâs not my girlfriend.â
âRight. Just a girl you fuck from time to time. Well, sorry, I donât feel like being added into your rotation.â
âMy what? Why are you giving me a hard time, when youâre with Axel?â I swear to fuck Iâm tired of hearing that kidâs name.
âAre you kidding me? First, thatâs none of your business. Second, my one boyfriendâwho I happen to love, by the wayâhardly compares to the volume of women whoâve been in and out of your bed.â
âVolume of women? What the fuck are you even talking about?â
âDo you think Iâm stupid? You think Iâm dumb enough to think that horror show I walked in on a couple years ago was a one-time event?â
âThatâsââ
âNo,â she says, cutting me off. âYou never even asked me why I showed up that day.â
Iâd been too fucking embarrassed to dwell on it. âHeidi, the whole thing was embarrassing for everyone. I wanted to forget it happened. Iâm so sorry.â
âIâm sure you are. Do you think I donât know you two were up to that shit for years? And kept it up even afterââ
âYou were thirteen! What was I supposed to do?â
She glances at the floor, then meets my eyes again. âDonât act like youâve been pining away for me all this time. Iâve overheard plenty of stuff over the years.â
âFrom who? Your brother?â
âNo. I only have to be up at the clubhouse for five minutes to hear the kind of dirty shit youâre into.â
What the actual fuck? âWhat are you talking about?â
She doesnât hesitate with her comeback. âPlease, everyone talks about how you have a different girl at every LOKI charter in the Northeast.â
âWho? Axel? Of course heâd say that.â That may have been true a couple years ago, but Iâve settled down a lot, so it pisses me off that she still thinks Iâm like that.
âNo. And leave him out of this. Iâve been hearing those stories since I was a kid. I never really believed it untilââ
âYouâve got to let that stuff go. It has nothing to do with us.â Even as I try to convince her, a bad feeling forms in the pit of my stomach.
âI donât have to do anything. How could I ever trust you?â
âI wasnât in a relationship with any of them!â
That was probably the worst possible thing I could have said.
She nods as if I proved her point, which I probably did. âI couldnât stand wondering who you were with all the time. It would break my heart,â she whispers, glancing down at her intertwined hands.
All I want to do is comfort her. My fists ball up in frustration as I try to find the right words to explain sheâs all Iâve ever wanted. Iâd rather lose a limb than ever hurt her. âYouâre all I want. When have I given you a reason not to trust me?â I hate how desperate my voice comes out.
She canât come up with anything. But she shakes off the question. âWe wonât work. I want to finish schoolââ
Now that pisses me off. âI want you to finish school. For fuckâs sake, I offered to send you anywhere you wanted to go.â
âI donât want your money. Iâm not some whore.â
âWhat?â Is every woman this frustrating? âWhy do you even go there? Youâre my girl. I want to take care of you. Whatâs wrong with that?â
âIâm not your girl.â
âForget the fucking money. Youâre right, Iâm an asshole for wanting to make sure you go to college.â
âI didnât say that. I canât take your money. It wouldnât be right. Iâm with Axel.â
She crosses her arms over her chest and glares at me. Shit, even thatâs fucking hot.
I ignore the Iâm-with-Axel bit. âHeidi, Iâm sorry if Iâve ever made you feel bad, but Iâve always cared about you. In one way or another, Iâve loved you since the day I met you.â
âThen whyâd you have to be so mean and push me away?â Her words are weighted with years of hurt that I unknowingly caused and it almost crushes me.
How do I explain it to her in a way that makes a lick of sense? âI didnât know how to deal with my feelings. I didnât want to end up doing something Iâd regret later. I only ever wanted what was best for you.â
Silent tears roll down her cheeks, and I have to stop myself from kissing them away. âWhy couldnât you just say that?â
Her words punch me in the gut, because there were so many times I did want to tell her to wait and be patient. âHow could I ever tell you that? You would have made things ten times harder on me.â
âYouââ
âIt hurt waiting for you, Heidi. There were days when Iâd see you and think Iâd lose my fuckinâ mind. Thatâs why I had to stay away sometimes.â
âBut you kissed meââ
âI know, baby girl. And I shouldnât have.â
âPlease donât say that.â Her voice, raspy from tears, slices right through me.
âI never regretted it for a second. Thatâs not what Iâm saying. I shouldnât have messed with your feelings. Thatâs what Iâm sorry about.â
âBut, why couldnâtââ She breaks off, sobbing, and I have to gather her in my arms.
Leaning down to kiss the top of her head, I close my eyes and give her the truth she needs to hear. âIâm so sorry I ever hurt you. I love you so fuckinâ much. Youâre the last person in the world Iâd ever want to hurt.â
She sniffles and wraps her hands in my T-shirt to get closer.
âBlake?â
âYes, Bug?â
As if that wordâs some magical, pissed-off switch for her, she flattens her palms against my chest and pushes me away. âWhy do you have to ruin everything by calling me that?â Sheâs not quite screaming, but a few more decibels and my eardrums might bleed.
âWe all call you that.â
âI hate when you call me that!â
âI donâtââ
Sheâs too mad to hear reason. âIt makes me feel small and insignificant. It reminds me of every time you called me that to put me in my place. You say Iâm your girl, but you never listen to me. Iâve told you a million times how much I hate it.â
Sheâs so wrong. When she was little, it was a sweet nickname that became a habit and later, I called her that to remind myself that she was off-limits. Never to hurt her. âOkay, okay. Iâm sorry. I thought we were just joking around. I didnât know it bothered you so much.â
âWell, now you know.â
âSo youâre not going to give us a chance because I called you Bug?â
âThere is no us.â
âThere will always be an us.â
âIâm with Axel,â she whispers.
âHeidi, do you love him or are you trying to get even with me?â
Her jaw drops. Itâs probably the most honest question Iâve ever asked her and I want a real answer.
âGod, youâre so full of yourself! Yes, every time we make love, Iâm thinking âThisâll show Blake!â Howâd you know?â
Fuck, fuck, fuck. That answer might have been a little too real. My vision swims red and the buzzing in my ears reaches an all-time high. Thinking about the two of them together has me about ready to lose my shit. I asked the question, though, so I deserve every bit of pain gathering in my chest.
âWe can talk about this later.â I try one last thing. âHey, remember how I promised t
o take you apple picking for your birthday? Letâs goââ
She shakes her head sadly. âI canât. Axel and I have plans.â
I blow out a frustrated breath. âWhen can we get together and talk?â
âThereâs nothing to talk about.â
âBullshit,â I growl.
I love her.
She can deny it all she wants, but Heidiâs mine. Every stubborn, bratty little inch of her.
The bond of true family isnât always one of blood
Fourteen years earlierâ¦
The ride to the Lost Kings MCâs clubhouse seemed longer on my own. Usually, Iâd peddle as hard as I could to keep up with Marcel.
Rock was out behind Crystal Ball, the strip club located right next door to the MCâs clubhouse. The guys could always be found there or in the garages behind the clubhouse. Iâd gotten to stick my head in Crystal Ball once or twice. Never got to see any of the good stuff, though. Just poor lighting, ugly decorations, and throbbing music.
Rock lifted his head when he saw me coming.
ââSup, kid? Whereâs your buddy?â
âDonât know.â
He cocked his head and gave me a more serious appraisal. âEverything okay?â
I lifted my shoulders and prayed like fuck any tears were wiped clean on the ride down.
âNeeded to get away for a bit?â Rock asked.
âYeah.â
He nodded and tossed his cigarette, grinding it out under his boot. âCome on. Letâs teach you how to change some spark plugs.â
Cool. I followed him next door to the garages. I tried not to act too eager, but inside I was bouncing with excitement. Usually Marcel was the one learning stuff, and I just got to watch.
Rock was patient and when I froze up because I was afraid Iâd wreck his bike, he assured me I wouldnât. I was finishing up when screaming and shouting echoed across the parking lot. Ruger, the president of the Lost Kings, was tossing one of the Crystal Ball dancers out the back door. Rockâs hand tightened around the wrench he was holding, but he didnât move.
Ruger slammed the back door shut and the girl focused on us. Rock called her over.
